She’s a kid of both countries . She doesn’t need to take any kind of political stance . She’s 19 and skiing . She’s intelligent and positive . Staying out of politics and off touchy subjects is wise . Someone will always find a way to twist words against a person .
Eileen is following in the footsteps of President Xi's daughter (and millions of others) in pursuing higher learning in the US.
Eileen Gu embodies the rare combination of talent, character, beauty and brains, but would she have become such a huge star if she hadn't chosen to compete for China? My guess is NO. We treat our Olympic stars like disposable toys in this country. No one cares or knows who they were the day before the Olympics, and no one cares/remembers them the day after. The only sports icons we care about in this country are NFL and NBA stars, no matter how badly they behave. AFAIK, no US Olympic star, no matter how good looking or successful they are, have ever been associated with brands like Estee Lauder, Louis Vuitton, Tiffany's or Victoria's Secret(yikes), not even Lindsay Vonn. These opportunities are only available to Eileen because she is a rare bilingual, bicultural sports star with a large appeal in China.
The only time I can recall seeing Olympic stars in commercials is during the Olympics, and only for those who have won across multiple Olympics like Michael Phelps or Shaun White. But even then, athletes are only marketable while they're still competing. How many ads have you seen featuring Michael Jordan lately? Olympic stars have an even shorter shelf life, since they can only compete once every 4 years, and extreme sports like freestyle skiing are sports that eat their young -- by 25 they are too old. So all those who chide her for being "ungrateful" should realize that America didn't make her a huge star, she did, through lots of hard work, and with some help from China. We could've never given her the kind of exposure she gained in China, because we don't care about our Olympic athletes except for 2 wks every 4 years. What about all the training facility and coaching you ask? Her mom paid top $ for them, and they are available to all other US athletes as well, why aren't they as good as her? What about all the competitions she got to participate in to hone her skills like X Games, World Cup, Youth Olympics etc.? Sure, but EPSN, FIS and IOC didn't stage those games out of the goodness of their hearts. They did it to make money, lots of it, off of these kids, at the cost of their broken bones and concussions since a young age. So please, spare me the "America made her into a Star" whining. We didn't. She is successful because she did all the hard work, took all the risks, and deserves every bit of success and accolade that comes her way.
OP must've forgotten how Jeremy Lin became famous...cuz' he's Chinese!!!

Never thought that I'd ever read something so long on the internet and not be repulsed by it.
God the amount of BS in this comment is astonishing. I am not going to respond to all of it but saying that "she did all the hard work" when all she had to do was have good genetics and look pretty is crazy. I mean sure, freestyle skiing is amazing but I am not talking about the sport in itself, I am talking about being a marketing tool and betraying the country you were born into Funny thing is that she is still going back to American universities. So much for cutting ties.
So true. Similar goes for Mondo Duplantis and his decision to compete for Sweden. The US track team and Olympic team in general is so big and vast, that his accomplishments would be celebrate but almost considered a given. In Sweden, he is the biggest sport star imaginable whose face is literally printed on red bull cans in the supermarket. I don't see how that could happen to him in the US, even with his unmatched level of dominance in his sport.
Her American father left her and her mother when she's 2. She was entirely raised by Chinese mom and grandma. Why would people expect her to compete for USA?

Lol the thumbnail of this video made me chuckle. In real life Eileen Gu is a girl smiling almost ALL the time in front of the cameras, and WSJ managed to find the one photo that made her look like she was the villain in a James Bond movie. Bravo WSJ. I salute your unbiased reporting with absolutely no agenda.
You gotta understand, WSJ is no longer a true journalism media. It now part of the US weapon, to paint a picture of China what is a hostile country, to the world and to its own people. We all grew up to learn to read and be happy that we live in a nation that rule by democratic value but it just it not always a painted picture they want us to see.

mainstream media won't let her stay out of politics. if you notice, they're the ones dragging in the politics.
The best thing WSJ can do is to report the news without bias and not to interpret them to their own political narratives.

That’s what skiing taught her all her life, balance!
People, especially many people in China, are angry at her privilege that she doesn't have to abide by the Chinese nationality law which prohibits dual-nationality in all circumstances, not the fact that she's earning money and enjoying life on both sides. And she has never, I do mean NEVER, publicly renounced her American citizenship after obtaining her Chinese citizenship, till this very day. This video mentioned none of it.

@kai tew
"this is funny as many Chinese in china use Instagram and Facebook too"
There's a specific sign in Beijing's Olympic town that tells foreigners where they can use 6 international social-media platforms: Facebook, Google, UA-cam, Instagram, Twitter, and Telegram. You know why that sign exists? Because they're all banned inside the communist regime's "great firewall", and regular Chinese people, excluding the communist party officials, will be prosecuted if they get caught using the aforementioned platforms, even under a VPN service. This has long been known as a fact.
The US government, unlike all other countries doesn't provide any assistance for olympiyans, even after winning medals for the country. All training and equipment costs have to be borne by the athlete, and winners of sports that doesn't have a big fan base barely make any money from endorsements. On the other hand China runs Olympic training like an industry.
She deserves every penny she’s making. She worked harder than anyone else. Why does she need to answer questions she doesn’t know anything about.
Because sports is a propaganda tool used by the CPC? She has been clearly afforded a privilege (dual citizenship) not afforded to regular Chinese.
You choose to wear the flag of a genocidal and downright evil regime, yet want to study and live in a democratic setup(enjoying the fruits of its citizenship) , you clearly have questions to answer.

I agree with you and I believe that the secret to financial stability is having the right investment ideas to enable you earn more money, I don't know who agrees with me but either way I recommend either real estate or crypto and stocks.
Amazing!!!... I also started trading with Mr Grey Smith, He's the best at what he does with an initial investment of $1400 Canadian I made up to $5230 profit in just a week of trading with him, his strategies are mind blowing
I think trading is easier with proper guidance, especially from a proffessional it really helps reduce the chances of running into losses. All thanks to Mr Grey Smith He changed my life, I was able to pay my mortgage ❤
@@abigailsebastian5050 I had a bad experience investing on my own until I met Mr Grey Smith, I have made over $200,000 trading Cryptocurrency, I even made a whooping $28000 on my last trade with him no fears!!

She is making good money from both parts of the world, USA & China. Congraluations.
She strong and smart. I like her
She is very well-grounded and deserves all the credit for what she is doing.
very well-grounded... LOL
Making money and paying as little taxes as possible is the American way. Wonder why some people are so upset at this.
Not like integrity and loyalty is worth much in the US today with politicians looking out and working for themselves instead of the people. I would have done exactly the same thing if I were her. Barely 18yo and already the wealthiest self made teenager. Definitely gonna be wealthiest skiier ever.
If you look at Chloe Kim (Asian American as well) who actually has TWO gold medals, can she even make 10% of Eileen? I highly doubt it (10% of Eileen's endorsement contract is about $3.1 million).
@@BSPBuilder No Olympic gold medallists from other countries would be able to match Eileen Gu's earning power for sure. Her lifetime earnings are at least $300m and that's a conservative estimate. Those slamming her are just hypocrites. They would have done the same thing.
Some people could upset and I can understand why (regardless of I personally agree or not).
.
Imagine if top-notch US-born multi-culture athlete representing US's most friendly countries, that person wouldn't be put into such controversy as Eileen's level. (there still be a debate though)
@@aero.l she didn’t compete for china so not as famous
@@BSPBuilder she’s also Korean
People should leave Eileen Gu alone, it’s her business as she has goals to do.
Michael Phelps achieved his goal he grabbed 7 gold medals from Beijing Olympic Summer 2008.
People should to find their own goal to achieve.
This saga has to do with the sovereignty of China, they are staining it further
Hater gon hate. Get that money gurl!
would you ask American athletes questions about the Afghanistan withdraw
hahaha ha 😆 LoL! Must be very embarrassing !
I consider the Kabul retreat was a marathon for the Americans and I enjoy watching it!
just as she said, she is just a 18 years old girl, she enjoy her wonderful life!
Chinese American moms expect pre med major , won’t be surprised if that is her Stanford goal
Mark Dreyer has a nice painting!
Do what you gotta do for the $
Congratulations Aileen Gu, please continue your mission of bringing unity between the two peoples of China and US. It is only some politicians and govt of the day in US that is difficult to bring on board. If you succeed your mission is accomplished. Many Americans, Chinese scholars, academics, businesses prefer to live in harmony.
lead by example, and show great respect to parties that support her, may Eileen Gu inspire politicians here
She divided the community further when she evaded the questions about her nationality. This is another shady chapter in China.
@@SuccessforLifester It is politicians and main street media here chose to divide people of two countries, not by Miss Gu ... Remember when USA needed China to help end Vietnam War, did Nixon went to China... When politicians here feel no need, they just bash and demonized China.
@@zhuangdavid5037 those are valid questions about her qualifications to be a Chinese. The reputation of China in the last Olympics was still much better. Except for the fake cute girl pretending to sing on behalf of another cute girl deemed not so pleasant
@@SuccessforLifester What are you saying? Trying your best derail the main discussion.
Haters will hate.
What is her nationality?
So jealous, so mean. That is American media
he new cosmetics company will make her a billionaire soon.
She will have 70 bodyguards like Eminem
Why don't you question American athletes on their stance about ongoing police violence against blacks and the history of massacres and violence toward minorities since the founding of the US, and drone strikes killing millions of Muslims in the middle east?
She is beautiful and smart. She is the best example of when the US and China come together. Please put politics aside and enjoy a little bit of sports.
There are rules and laws to follow in a sport. If China breaks its own rules to allow her to represent China and still keeps her US citizenship, then it is quite a dirty sport.
And traitors from the Root, too.
@@terryhuynh9511 learn grammar properly before comment.
She's a model, an athlete soon to be a university student, why is it that she's being asked political stuff? good thing she keeps quiet.
Do not forget, traitors from the Root too.
@@terryhuynh9511 keep crying
@@terryhuynh9511 traitor your @ss.
When she was 15, she was yelled at “go back to China” while shopping with her grandma. (according to Economists)
So she did 🖕
@@terryhuynh9511 cry about it
Didn't know her
Her mother came to the US to make more money. She moved back China to make even more money. Citizenship is not a big deal when you can make millions. She is now a super star and being loved by everyone in China. There’s really no point in going back to the US.
For us she represents not only personal success and talents in academic, sports, language… basically everything she does. But also a combination of good values of both sides(including family values). Do some research you will be astonished.
We've done some research, and found out she never publicly denounced her American citizenship, which is already a violation of the Chinese nationality law. But the rich and the powerful (especially if they're affiliated with the CCP) should be free from obeying any law under the communist regime according to you people, right?
She is in cahoots with the Chinese government to play the game. It would have been better if China is honest and plays the game with integrity.
@@SuccessforLifester See how Americans treat Chloe Kim.
@@jowen9422 I didn't follow her case.
@@SuccessforLifester so, it's not to late to follow, if you realy interested asian american.
Understandable that people are jealous. Haters gonna hate and be jealous... I mean who wouldn't be... She is smart, intelligent, athletic, outspoken, a trained pianist, a stanford student, an Olympic gold medallist, models for LV and she is just 18 .... The list goes on... Like definition of an overachiever.
Don’t forget a beauty
Lead by example, and show great respect to parties that support her, may Eileen Gu inspire politicians here .. BTW, to the main street media, China has bought so mucb US T bills, show some respect, would u, dude!
funny all the COMMENTATORS says Eileen Gu is walking a tight rope, worry not, if she weren't able to make the right decision, she wouldn't be talked about here, for being richer than you, prettier than you, and smarter than you.
go eileen! love from texas!
What people fails to understand is that Gu is not the symbol of China VS US. She is the very symbol of rich vs poor. No average China or US family could raise a kid like this. The wealthy family of this world takes advantage of both sides to serve their best interest.
And it's fine when American sport superstar get endorsements?
Good for her. Most athletes fissle out by their mid 20s. 18 is the peak for most Olympians.
Jealous much?
@@XJLCA Sadly it's truth. Most athletes, especially Olympic ones, tend to peak by their mid 20s and are unable to transition to a career outside. Unless you get sponsorship or develop some kind of brand, in a few years someone younger will take over your legacy.
She certainly peaked at just the right time, dominating the whole year leading up to these games. Time will tell if she can continue with this dominance into the next Olympics. Chloe Kim took a couple of years off then came back and was just as dominant at 21 as she was at 17. Freestyle skiing is extremely risky, injuries are common and by 25, 26, most athletes have passed their peak. But then again, look at Lindsay Jacobellis, finally a gold at 36!
A lot of sour grapes in here, LOL
Seriously tho. It's so funny reading all these comments 😂
I love how Gu responsed to those haters: Cry ab it! Lol this is super!
Yes it is sad adding one more stain to China's history
Eileen looks good in red.
I don’t think it’s accurate to say she’s not political…she’s obviously picking a side.
To obviously, she and her mom picked Chinese, that, what she is representing, Now
