  • Jessica Saccone has been a healthy, happy teenager until she becomes unusually tired and sleeps for 10 straight days. She is taken to many doctors to find out the cause, including therapists, but they find nothing wrong with her. Eventually, though, a TV episode leads Jessica's parents to a doctor who finds out that she has Kleine-Levin syndrome (KLS). Edward Leigh has been a healthy, confident young man until he starts experiencing abdominal pain and diarrhoea. He also becomes nauseous, but his doctor thinks he simply has irritable bowel syndrome. To make matters worse, Edward soon experiences hemorrhaging from his rectum and even passes out. After being dismissed so much, he finally learns that he has stage 3 of colon cancer.
Every year, millions of Americans fall prey to real-life medical mysteries ailments that go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years. Their lives are thrown into turmoil as medical professionals struggle to understand their baffling conditions. Mystery diagnosis tells their stories. Through interviews and dramatic recreations, each medical mystery is recounted in vivid detail. Symptoms emerge, specialists are called in, but still the daily struggle continues. And then one day, because of a patients relentless pursuit of an accurate diagnosis, or a forward thinking doctor, the problem is solved and a true diagnosis given.

So incredibly frustrating and insulting when doctors, after not finding a cause, state that it must be psychological. This happens far more often than most people realize.

yes, ever since i was diagnosed with anxiety my doctors dont take me seriously, they just say its my anxiety. i was getting so angry at myself because i thought i was imagining this pain i had because thats what the doctors said but after further testing they found something but then basically said ‘yeah this is probably whats causing your pain but you are still imagining it because of your anxiety’ 🤨

This may sound wrong to say, but it's a piety not a lot more people suffer from this disease. If there were more sufferers pharmaceutical industry would see it as an opportunity to make money and be all over finding a cure. I know it's sickening but they aren't putting in any real money in to research because they don't see a profit in it.

Yeah, I have anxiety and apparently that’s just the cause of everything yet after going to so many different doctors we found out that I have coeliac disease and other undiagnosed things. I’m not crazy and I’m not imagining my pain because I have anxiety. This happens way too often, my case isn’t the most serious but it can lead to someone with a more serious illness losing their life

The second case in which Eddie had colon cancer was ridiculous. I have had no medical training and my first thought was, have they tested for bowel or colon cancer. His first doctor did not give him enough information about the tests and should not have kept sending him away so hastily, especially after the amount of blood loss he experienced. It would be like someone severing the radial artery and a doctor just saying, "you should be fine in a couple of days, just stay home and rest"

Not really. Most patients who are young present with IBS or Crohns. Often they do colonoscopy and take a biopsy to confirm diagnosis. He had all of that done. Colon cancer at young age is rare

@@gosiakulicka4156 I understand where you are coming from but there is a difference between rare and impossible. @@gosiakulicka4156 He didn't get a colonoscopy the first time, they literally say that in the documentary. I guarantee you that had he gotten a colonoscopy that first time, he would've had his diagnosis years before and probably wouldn't have needed chemotherapy, because he wasn't in stage 4 yet.
I honestly wondered why they didn't start with testing for Coeliac disease (or any blood test tbh). that could've shown elevated CRP or something. Not very specific, but very clear on the: here is something amiss scale. I hope blood tests for colon cancer will appear quickly (they were actually developing specific ones about 6 years ago, maybe they exist now, no clue, but I'm curious to know).

The first doctor should be sued! Telling a patient that hemorrhoids can cause significant bleeding is such a cop-out. The patient would definitely NOT pass out and wake up covered in blood. Checking to see whether he had hemorrhoids is so easy and would have been picked up with the sigmoidoscopy in any case. Eddie's cancer could have and SHOULD have been picked up much sooner. They even say that colon cancer is very common in the USA, so why did the first doctor not even think of checking for that???

I love mystery Diagnosis. The second case was unnecessarily mysterious. The first doctor should have been more thorough with examination. Especially after all that blood loss and the combination of symptoms. And colon cancer is not as rare as other conditions. Although it may be costly, sometimes we need a second and even third opinion.

    • @blondecat666
      @blondecat666 5 років тому +15

Most of the people are under-qualified in the US. My son was an exchange-student there for 6 months at the age of 16, he didn't have to study anything but a little American history and had the best results (English is not his native language and still...), meanwhile the 'brightest student' came to live with us and literally had to study about 5-6 hours after school (with my help) just to keep up with the lowest levels of math, science etc. Shocking.

    • @chris-hu7tm

Under qualified as not knowing every single diagnosis, then yes. They're GP's what can they do? They treat whatever is common and let the specialists do the rest. Have you ever seen a GP coming forward with the right diagnosis on this show? It's always given by an obscure doctor in a university setting who has specialized in a certain area for years.

So the mystery diagnosis was one of the most common cancers? 🤔 Two minutes into the story of the colon cancer guy, I thought ”sounds like colon cancer” but then I brushed it off thinking the show is about mystery diagnosis. 🤣 Glad he’s ok, but it is really strange that it took so long to diagnose him. He had the classic symptoms. My mom had colon cancer (she’s ok now) and was also told the bleeding was probably just hemorroids, so it took a few extra months to get the correct diagnosis, but two years?? That could have killed him.

E C my grandfather passed away from colon cancer unfortunately, also due to a late diagnosis. At his funeral we asked for donations to go towards a Colon Cancer Research and Support Charity.
His treatment was going well and my nan had the house set up for him to come home and everything (guide rails on the stairs, shower chair etc). However he took a sudden turn for the worse out of nowhere, and then ended up in the ICU. He most likely would have passed away regardless, however he died very quickly due to a mistake (it was a teaching hospital). His lung got pierced when they tried to help with his breathing. His body was already weak, so he went into shock and had a heart attack. He thankfully passed very quickly, and I’m hoping he wasn’t in any pain.
The odds of his survival at that stage was low, but we would never have found out if he could have recovered, thanks to that horrible mistake.
I was young when it happened, but I remember my mother and nanna going in to have a hearing about the mistake. I’m not sure if my family took legal action or not.

Poor Jessica, physicians could easily believe this "oversleeping" symptom disease, was obviously something to do with a nervous breakdown or psychiatric issues instead of neuropediatric matter. Psychiatrical remedies are very harmful and inappropriate/inefficient, to cure her. I know, in Edward's situation, some people would feel so bad and embarrassed to complain about their very painful and alarming symptoms, that they'd keep on suffering in silence. But as usual with illness, like cancer, it's like a kind of taboo, when it concerns the intimate anatomy...The sooner it is treated, the better the prognostic is generally.

  • @catherinespark

So…we know that during teenage years, teenagers sleep longer, later, and are harder to rouse than either young children or adults, and we know this is hormonal.
If hormones were the issue in Klein-Levin that would likely show up in blood tests. It’s more likely that there are some receptors, or signalling cascades, that are activated in a certain way unique to the teenage/puberty growth spurt to trigger this circadian change. I expect that either as an inherited mutation or as a de novo one, people with Klein-Levin have a defective receptor and/or cascade in this highly specific way. Thus the symptoms begin as that part of puberty sets in, and fade away as it ends.
I also think mainstream society disrespects the unique and genuine physiology, and the mental/emotional characteristics, of the teenage years a lot. Adults place a huge strain on teenagers in a type of ‘tough love’ cultural tradition, in terms of school, homework, conduct expectations, and above all, ability to understand the importance of, comply with,
work towards, and get, grades and placements that affect lifelong learning and work trajectories.
Teens are NOT adults. They are post-childhood but pre-adulthood. They shouldn’t be treated like adults in terms of expectations, when it comes to things like expected independence and maturity of conduct, or when it comes to work/concentration/stress management/mental health expectations. If they are inappropriately equated with adults in these ways, it’s inevitable that underlying conditions will be especially aggravated in some at that life stage, due to the physiological insult such inappropriate frameworks of treatment and expectation constitute on the teenage body and brain.

The unfortunate thing in the medical world when the doctors have no explanation why you are feel ill. They use the all too common "psychological and mental illness ' this route is extremely dangerous because they can be harbouring a potential illness left undiagnosed due to a misdiagnosed of mental illness. I have been there and now unable have children I am paying for the mistakes the doctors made.

That's why I told her make sure not feeling so sad and try to calm yourself all the time.

What a shame! here in the Philippines, if you‘ll sum up all the symptoms that eddie had , or even just for a recurrent diarrhea, the GPs would probably suggest for a colonoscopy! Lol! I thought GPs in the US are way better than here..i’ve been lied to my whole life.. in fact, colon cancer is not a rare d’se tbh

I guess the rare part is that the patient and his wife never heard of colonoscopy or how it´s done... like, everybody knows, especially if you´re having problems in the intestines, the least you can do is read about the symptoms and exams. So, it´s rare to have people so clueless... and so were the doctors!

As a patient for last 13 years and currently in the episode. I think researchers going on a wrong direction. They are treating patients for symtoms and not the cause. They treat for EDS . Cognitive. Mood swings. But none of them address the cause. Which is not wakefulness.. But waking up refreshed and rejuvenated.
It is the issue when we sleep and how the Nuerotramitter work in the brain and set your body and brain Perfect.. This is not happening in KLS. Please address this..
