- Rishi Sunak has outlined plans to scrap A-levels in his keynote speech at the Conservative party conference in Manchester.
He unveiled the new Advanced British standard (ABS), which he said wound give A levels and technical T-levels “parity of esteem”.
Under the plans, every student would study some form of maths and English to 18.

Having been a teacher for many years, the last thing teachers want is short term politicians, short on ideas and short on sight, to be interfering and bringing in constant change when what is needed is long term stability. Education should be in the hands of an academic body independent of political interference, providing resources proven through research and classroom practise.
I agree so much that Education and Politics should become, and remain, separate. The "stability" is much needed, as I'm sure a "sudden change" is the last thing students need right now". In addition, Changing A-Levels seems like an unnecessary change (speaking as a 17y.o. A-Level student from the UK)
Just like the NHS. How on earth are these inept politicians just shuffled in to each sector and rule over them despite never being a teacher dr or nurse is beyond me. It's weird and I do believe done to actually further shove our lowly everyday peoples further down there hierarchy. Disgusting immoral and just total insanity. Its ok though as each amd everyone of them has blooming good handshakes to further there they don't caredom
Maths is a good subject to teach kids.
If they grasp that they'll be able to count the beans they get left with and maybe even have a stab at working out how much money gets stolen from them over their lifetime by crooked PMs

Modern education is not fit for purpose. It's time to bring down the old institutions and teach children to think and problem solve rather than teach to the subject.
Coming from the Government who don't want to pay teachers or school staff enough to not need a food bank, a Government that has cut School funding year after year, a Government that was fully aware of the building issues, where told they would need to renovate at least 200 a year to keep on top of the issue. Then came up with "We are championing the rebuilding/rehabilitating of 50 schools a year" and have so far done 4 over 3 years. A Government who take from the most needy in our society and give it as handouts to failing train companies, water companies, energy suppliers and the banks. They have socialised the failing and privatised the profits. All this is about is setting up some new board or committee to syphon more public funds into their pockets and leave us with nothing more than a fart in the wind.
Nonsense uk teachers wages London £57,000 per annum ..Outer London area £53,000 per annum and Fringe £48,000 a junior teaching assistant starts at £30,000 not bad for 9am to 3.45pm day plus an hour for lunch no weekends 6 weeks off in the summer 2 weeks easter 2 weeks Christmas plus 3 half terms of 1 week each name one other job like that ..Go in the schools car park and see how many teachers brand new cars are parked up 😂😂😂😂
@@nowgrownup No teacher only works 9am to 3:45. Most are in at 7am and work long after that for marking and planning. Also your wage guess is far off - England (excluding London) and Wales - £28,000 to £38,810
London - £29,344 to £40,083 (fringes), £32,407 to £43,193 (outer), £34,502 to £44,756 (inner) and that's only fully qualified teachers. maybe if you step outside of your bubble and look at the real world you'll see how fucked most of us actually are.

@@nowgrownupif your times only referred to teaching assistants 9 - 3.45 you’re still wrong. The school I’m in they work 8.30 - 3.15 and their starting salary is nowhere near £30,000. Yes they have 13 weeks off per year but are only paid for 5 of those weeks as holiday pay and have half hour UNPAID lunch break. They have no choice to take any other holiday time so are forced to pay peak week holiday prices. Half an hour lunch in a day is not much respite from the full on energy drain that is a room full of 30 six year olds. They get pro rata pay for their hours and pro rata pay for their holiday. That takes the annual salary advertised down rather a lot. Ave. TA £22,000 gross pay, pro rata for hours and holidays = actual gross pay of £16,035. Check your facts.

If kids haven't learnt to read, write and do maths to a reasonable level after 11 years of schooling then the whole system is flawed. Two more years will not make any difference!

This is genuinely foolish and forcing people to take maths and English a levels just seems absurd and unfair. If people don’t have the sufficient “literacy and numeracy skills” after 11 years of studying those, forcing everybody to do them for another 2 years will not make a single difference.
agree, but higher level mathematical thinking requires more time. we are woefully short in technical expertise in the UK, we need to bring our workforce into parity with central/eastern europe who are way ahead of us.

They will make the ABS into an 11-plus type with it available only for those deemed 'suitable' and the rest can go into technical schools to prepare them for whatever.
Decisions like this, should involve all political partys: after all, governments potentially change every five years, and building projects like this last longer.
How would that work? The parties constantly disagree over everything so no policies would actually get made. You do understand that right?

As a 17 year old living in the UK currently studying A-Levels, Could someone tell me what this guy thinks is wrong with A-Levels, because I can't see any flaws. You choose 3 (or more?) subjects you are most interested in, learn stuff for 2 years, then move on (for example to university), And I see absolutely no issue here. Maybe the point is "Too many kids are leaving Education under-educated/with not enough Maths/English skills" but that sounds like a problem with High School or Middle School, or more generally: the early stages of Education, and not College. Could someone be so kind as to explain why they suddenly want to change A-Levels? I am actually confused.🤔

My opinion. Not Brit. The subjects students are most interested might not be needed in the job market leading to a whole lot of unemployed local graduates while important STEM based jobs are imported. If the government must subsidise education, why can’t they choose what subjects are needed. Why fold to the weakness of teachers or the preference of students. The country needs people to understand maths and english, so be it. Same problem in my country, too many people studying useless subjects in Universities, and the government and hence the taxpayers is subsidising heavily to produce useless graduates.

@@user-bo3mp8un6c I agree. GCSE's in particular are just painful. If it were up to me and I had a blank check to overhaul education, I'd make GCSE's coursework based. I mean, as it stands now, you study for over a decade; roughly a seventh of your entire life but a single off day can make you entirely throw an exam. Even if you're the best at History for instance, back when I was at school, I had back to back exams on the same day and you just get burnt out. It’s draining from all the pressure, stress, frustration, feeling you’re fucked in life if you fail and everything else condensed into one damn day.
Coursework can be tedious yes but hey, it's spread out and actually teaches life skills like independence and time management unlike modern education which is regimented and like you're in the damn army. And hey, if you have a day of just absolute blankness, you don't potentially flunk an entire core subject and get screwed over like I was. If you fail at coursework which you were set three months ago, that’s on you instead of the misfortune of having an off day which everyone in history has had from time to time. Education needs to change, that's not up for debate. I just don't think people like this hedge fund managing snake should be the ones to do it. These people wouldn't know equality and human decency if it pissed in thier cornflakes.

Loved doing A-Levels and would have hated what he is proposing. We need a new Prime Minister before he manages to wreck the future as well as the present. People who want the sort of thing he is talking about can do something like the IB which already exists. I don't know who he thinks is going to support him because of this nonsense. So after watering A-Levels down the universities are going to need to water down their degrees because you won't know as much when you arrive ...

As someone who sat GCSEs a few years ago (me), I have a question: What were O-Levels, why were they better than the Current GCSEs and what good is "dumbing down of an education system"? I am not really into politics but what good can come to anyone if on average people are leaving education (High School) "dumber" for the lack of a more appropriate word?

Teachers are often terrible at preparing children for the real world. Conventional education and universities do not offer value for money and they do not teach the relevant skills that are necessary in today's workplace. So having a teacher's opinion is probably the last place that I would look in order to increase our output. I would much rather value Elon musk's opinion.

Tell me if something stands out in my grades, Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science grades of 8,9,8,8,8 and then 4,5 for English Language and English Literature. My brain cannot handle "English", it's not wired that way. I was so happy about leaving English in the past and this really allowed me to achieve good grades in A-Levels. Now imagine a student like me forced to take English further. They won't get any better at "English" and all you would do is divert their time and energy from their strong subjects towards subject that won't provide them any more value. I would personally be less happy and more stressed if this was to happen to me which would negatively impact my overall achievements. I say "English" because the "English" we are taught in school has nothing to do with the English we use day to day. If you want people to be more literate in Maths and English, provide them high value Maths and English in GCSEs. Then there are students who cannot handle "maths" the way way I cannot handle "English" the subject.
Now, I really agree with some of what you are saying. In my opinion, "English Literature" is utterly useless to "The English we use day to day", so It could be turned into an "Optional" subject since it clearly is not necessary unless someone wants to further study "Literature" and become a writer or something, However "English Language" At least has some important stuff, for example grammar, spelling and such (I know the thing I mentioned may be before High School). I hop Sunak doesn't hope to "force people to study Maths AND English until they're 18" because that sounds like a downright terrible idea (for example, with your grades, Which I can relate to: I got quite high grades in Maths/Triple Science/Computer Science/Geography and such, and I too scored much lower on English Language/Literature). Maybe the problem he's trying to solve is "Ensuring kids(/teenagers) are leaving education with enough English/Maths skills to get them through life, but I see absolutely no way that "Changing the A-Level system" or "Forcing them into Maths AND English until they turn 18" is a solution the the Lack of Literacy/Numeracy, as he put it, problem in the UK. It's good to see another person on this platform with similar views. I assume you're between 15 and 25 years old? Also, while Sunak was "complaining that students' education is too narrow", his method of "maths and english until they're 18" doesn't really seem like a solution to that, since people spending time of the "Basics"(English/Maths) takes away from them "specialising" (like they can with A-Levels, even though it is 3 subjects) and taking their education to a higher level. I don't know much about politics but I heard that some people in this comment section think that some people (maybe from the government) will benefit from making lots of young people "less educated" whichI know nothing about, so maybe you could give your view on that too? (Sorry for the gigantic wall of text but this topic has sparked my interest)
I was the exact opposite of you. I achieved 8s in both English Literature & English Language, but scored a 6 in Maths after months of private tutoring (I had been predicted 3s and 4s all year). As for Double-Award Science, I merely scraped a 4-4. I have always struggled with STEM subjects whilst excelling in humanities and essay writing. Every student is different. All have strengths in certain subjects and weaknesses in others. I feel like it's a waste of time, energy and resources forcing students to further study Maths or English after GCSE level if they don't wish to. I know I would have been miserable if I had been forced to further study Maths and definitely wouldn't have achieved the A level results I have gotten.

I heard some other commenters here say that "someone will gain something from the country becoming less literate" (or somehing like that), could you give your views on this?

No issue with an education revamp. We need less exams, more hands on work and teachers being trusted to grade their students.
You may be correct. Just a pity that NONE of the fantasy proposals address that.
Sadly, we're not as egalitarian as the nordic countries so there is no chance of getting rid of the exam factories that drown our youth in stress and worry.
kids should have a new subject at school called "adulting" where they're taught life skills like what to do when you move into a new property to switch on the gas and electricity or how to setup direct debits to pay your bills or how to get red wine stains and pizza sauce out of a carpet!
Like a Preparation for adulthood lessons? Because they do that in SEN schools and if you want that for mainstream kids then I would definitely agree

In Hong Kong, the A-level exams were scrapped in 2012, making the education system closer to that in China, and more convenient for the students from China to study 'abroad' in Hong Kong.

Correct me if I'm wrong (here in Scotland we use a different system) I thought that those studying T-levels had to document their learning journey and also spent time in class rooms rather than focusing solely on practical skills. After all it's not really possible to be an Electrician, a Plumber or a Builder without using a lot of practical Maths and English in your daily work, so this would already be covered in the courses. Sounds to me what he's really saying he's going to do is change the name. Nothing more. Though I don't necessarily think it would be a bad idea if those studying academic subjects were taught some practical skills too, somehow I can't see that happening.

I had a good career in music, at University and Conservatoire and on the stage. I could never have even had access to university if I had had to have maths GCSE!!! A science was good enough in my day. Making people do too many subjects at this level is ridiculous at the level when you are studying for what you are good at and want to do. denying me access to university would have kept me doing some sort of retailjob. Stop forcing people out of education.
I think people are being a bit cynical about the motivation. Yes, it's true that the Tory manifesto is to only implement policies that financially benefit themselves or their friends, but the thing people miss is the importance of distraction in politics. If you can't work out why something's happening out of the blue it's probably to distract you from something bad happening elsewhere.

This feels so apocolyptic im saddened that the goverment does not value creativity when creativity is the only thing distinguishing us from a machine. The goverment claims to leave no child behind yet what about those of us with ADHD who struggle to focus and often are so much more creative, those of us with Autism ? And although many of us will want to do maths and english many will have special interests in art, drama, design and be damn good at it too. What about those of us with dyslexia and dyscalcula ? The schools alreasy dont notice, and its not even their fault due to the underfunding, there are people like us who can only just pass but the thing is for people like us there are in fact things we can do. Things we are good at. And yet the goverment only values those who are academic essentially leaving us to get left behind, some of us wont even survive. Its targeted and its disgusting im so sorry if this comes to pass from the bottom of my heart im sorry we couldnt we stop this. This is the biggest joke of all time, A-levels are supposed to be a way for people to have a choice in what they want to study at university and persue a job, some/most people dont choose English and maths as an A-level because they stuggle or dislike the subjects, this is taking away the choice students have in something that dictates the rest of their life. Absolute joke.

I don't believe this to be the right decision, to a degree
I agree the courses needed work and more knowledge incorporated
But I think students spend enough time that is needed to do said courses
I think that A Levels and T Levels should stay separate since they're catered for different individuals goals
T is for Technical, some theory and more practical
A is for Academic which means that it's based on an exam and grade system with little to no practical work
Do both need improvement, probably. But there should be another alternative to simply just trying to combine both into one thing, and I don't think that would work well. So Rishi Sunak should try something else, but not this option
He may as well scrap A levels as few are educated enough to pass the Exam,
yes most skips doing GCES anyway and wait at home for 2 year after leaving school and claim dole
A levels are a bit weak, but i don't trust sunak or the Tories to replace them. I would keep A levels and add a more practical hands on core subject where students are imitating what is involved in high level jobs such as professors in battery tech researching and developing tech indepently, being marked on their progress over 2 or 3 years. Uk is far behind, it needs to upgrade its educational infrastructure urgently. Minimum a whole day a week in such a subject
Could you elaborate on how A-Levels are weak? I am currently studying A-Levels so I don't know the side of the argument which is slightly against them?
@@GreyJaguar725 the slight weakness is that they are heavily focused on theory and not enough on practical skills relevant to the work that people would be getting into, I believe that the experience gained early on alongside the theoretical aspects of education would pave the way for significantly more entrepreneurs and independent startups armed with ability and knowledge to propel this country forward with innovation and forward thinking.
For example somebody studying A level maths, electronics and chemistry should have to do a lab based day every week in their desired profession (infrastructure would need to be upgraded). E.g Tony wants to go into battery research and development, so he will do the practical in the lab where he experiments with different materials and methods in order to create the best battery, if Tony shows great ability at the end of 2 years and has created a product even if it's a slight improvement on current technology then he will get a level 10 pass (0-10) students not able to create an advancement but showed great ability will be around a 7 pass etc. Early practical steps are key and should be continued throughout university.
It's a shame because the people in charge of the education system are just going through the motions. The Human race is much more capable than this current system, everyone needs to be pushing the cutting edge in order to advance.

How is an employer to distinguish between manual, mental to or mixture of skills? What would sunak skills equate to compared to a lettuce leaf with a proven record of recovery?
This has all happened before. Back in 1984, I was all set to take Maths, Physics and Biology A'Levels in 6th form college, but our headmaster held a meeting with the top set on how A'Levels are dead, and how we should do a vocational course instead. So I ended up taking a BEC National in Business Studies course. How I regretted that decision, and not just because my daughter takes the mick out of me me for doing the equivalent of modern day BTEC!

I didn't grow up in the UK. What surprised me was that kids have to choose at the age of 11 what they will want yo do when they are adult.
I had no clue what I wanted to do when I was 11.
More subjects will give you more options when it comes to applying for university.

A better idea would be to insist on a B'Ed for teachers and bin the PGCE , which just encourages people with useless degrees to become teachers

About the only thing he's correct with is a neglect of practical training but that should be hands on and not done out of a book in a classroom, so again the underfunding will be a problem.

Am way behind school cus my teachers on Facebook and WhatsApp 24/7 none stop all the kids learning am in the far corner of the class room pulling my hair out I come back home with nail marks on my face where I've been pulling it I cry everyday at school this point I actually bring a little emotional support teddy to school every time he comes home soaking of wet salty tears. My school is a hellhole. Never judge anything or anyone until your in there shoes don't speak for athour people about things like this I know loads of school that police come bully's everything this is coming from a 5th grader my honest opinion about this is... NOT GONNA HAPPEN! I have no hope
