    SUMMARY
    In this video, Laci Green talks about the nature of racism in 2015. She begins by challenging commonly held ideas about what racism is. She highlights how racist attitudes have created a racist system...which have created more racist attitudes. In order to stop the cycle, she illustrates 6 common ways that racism is institutionalized. Wealth disparities and housing, education, employment, mass incarceration, racial profiling, and police brutality are all touched upon. She ends by calling white America to stop making excuses that enable the past to continue and instead acknowledge the injustice right in front of us.

    Dear white people,
    Racism doesn't always look like white hoods and burning crosses, it looks like people trying to justify why a black person didn't deserve to live when killed by police. Racism doesn't always look like racial slurs and hate speech, it looks like stereotypes & broad generalizations used to refer to an entire race of people to absolve individuals accountability for their own prejudices. Racism doesn't always look like hatred, it often looks like indifference perpetuated by willful ignorance.
    If you're looking to discuss whether or not racism is over in America, the last person you should be looking to answer this question is another white person.
    “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read or write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.” -Alvin Toffler
    P.S. To all the people crying "reverse racism", if you're mad at what I've said here it's because you know what I've said applies to you. Don't be mad at me for holding up the mirror, be mad at your own reflection.
    P.P.S. Your white tears are delicious.
    But seriously, snark aside, I'm moderating these comments and will immediately delete anyone who swears, name calls or just outright denies without engaging, respectfully. I'm more than open to discussion with those who have questions and are able to take part in thoughtful discussion.

      Rebecca K. You said "white". That means that you referred to all whites, ever, across all the timelines and the perpendicular dimensions. (But not _parallel_ dimensions, because "parallels", by definitions, never meet each other).
      Or: some people want you to shut up and stop talking about racism because they don't wanna think about them, and believe it's not their (first-world) fault anyway.

    • @EversorFatalisCG
      @EversorFatalisCG 9 років тому +26

      MrKockNoker What I think Rebecca was trying to say is that you shouldn't be asking a white person whether we still experience racism because white people DO NOT EXPERIENCE RACISM. You can be prejudiced or discriminatory towards white people, but you cannot be racist towards them as they are not an oppressed race. I think she means, and sorry if I'm wrong, that if you want to know if racism still exists, talk to someone who is not part of the privileged majority. Laci Green is trying to help and spread awareness and encouraging us to look at activists and other people who do know what's going on an do still experience racism.

      Dario Carraresi This comment made me laugh so hard, thank you for this. I swear, people don't realize that if they feel attacked by comments like these it has nothing to do with me. Nothing to do with my phrasing. My comment serves as a mirror, and people want to yell at me about their reflection. Don't like your reflection? Well, that's your problem, not mine.
      Eversor Fatalis While I respect you trying to reason with the unreasonable, I didn't "try" to say anything... I said it pretty clearly. Trust me, people who push back aren't asking for further clarification, they're seeking out any and every opportunity to further their own cognitive dissonance and separate themselves from their skewed perspective of what racism is and isn't.

      ***** Sorry to say, but this video is just as biased as most of the "racism isn't as big of a problem in America as it's made out to be" videos you'll see. Both sides are pushing their agenda. The fact is, it's not such a black and white (no pun intended) issue. There are undeniably laws in place which help minorities. Things such as Affirmative Action, for example.
      Another example of Lacie's clear bias pushing is her "schools" point. (Mind you, this isn't her only point I could easily have disproven)
      In America, public schools have racial diversity quotas. Meaning a school in a very rich neighborhood will need to bus in lower-income people from the inner city, and from the country. These lower-income people (OF ALL RACES) will be attending the same school as the rich kids. And some rich kids will be sent to the schools in the ghetto. It's not as cut and dry as "Rich white kids live in this neighborhood, so we'll build a nice school, and only rich white kids can go to it". I grew up in a shithole part of Nashville, TN. Poor as fuck. My school was in one of the richest neighborhoods in the city. It had people like me, and people literally from the ghetto.
      Most things she pointed out weren't a means to keep black people in poverty. They were a means of keeping poor people in poverty. I like Lac and agree with a lot of what she says, but this video is nothing but "whites are privileged" tumblr bullshit. And quite frankly, as a half-middle eastern person who grew up in one of the most racist areas of the country, IN POST 9/11 AMERICA, I don't particularly appreciate some white girl trying to act like she understands the reality of people like me, or the other people she seems to think she's doing a service to by making this video, just because she can link to a few studies and shit. "SEE? I RECOGNIZE MY WHITE PRIVILEGE". It's fucking condescending.

    Laci, I like your argument for African American racism in the U.S., but you're unintentionally implying that only white on black racism exists and it's a problem that is only 400 years old. I think you've failed to see the bigger picture that racism and racial prejudice play in our society. I'm Arab-American, that comes with its own form of racism and racial prejudice. Just because I'm not black doesn't mean I don't experience racism. I don't believe it was your intention to exclude people of other races, but using racism as a term to specifically describe one form of negativity is harmful to many other groups out there. I'm very pale; when I tell people of my descent behavior towards me changes depending on whom I am talking to. I go to an all girls, mostly white, high school. Very often, and very easily, do issues like race get thrown out of hand or ignored. I think it's important to realize that not only one form of racism exists, people of all races can be racially prejudice and racist. I do see where you intended to make a good point, but implying racism is only 400 years old is dangerous and harmful for many people who do experience racism out there.

I was raised around them so unconsciously I acted like them and dressed like them.. I thought it was normal.. When I moved I went to a mostly all black and latino school and I was bullied because I "didn't act like my race" :/ the white kids would get bullied so most of them started dressing "black" and listening to rap music ... This is something that confused me so much as a kid.. Racism is REAL .. No matter what race Black, White, Latino, Asian.. All races face some type of racism :/ I see her point in the video tho ..

      Yes! I think the key to eliminating (or at least reducing) racism is to make people see individuals instead of instances or representatives of a racial group. This requires _less_ focus on groups and _more_ focus on how to treat individuals in a fair way.

    I am half African-American. I was born to a white mother and a black father, went into fostercare and had only white foster parents, and got adopted by a nice middle class white family. But based solely on the fact that I got the skin tone of my black father the world seems to think that I don't have any abilities of my own. White teachers try and "help" me more on my homework and class assignments, are surprised when I do well on tests and we're 100% shocked when I got into a university. I grew up in white families with white friends, but I've always been the black kid. I go to a small school that, for the first time in all 9 years of its existence, has more than 6 black kids now; there's 11 or 12 of us. No matter how hard we try we're always the "black friend." And the problem with being the "black friend" is that people only use the term when implying that I bring nothing else to the friend group other than a little diversity. And the white teachers aren't trying to better me, they're belittling me and behaving as if I can't possibly achieve anything on my own.

      Abra Cadabra stop being racist against non-black people. Stop accepting all the blacks-only benefits you're getting, all the money you're getting just because you're black. Stop refusing any job offered by a company practicing "affirmative action".
      THAT will show you're not racist and don't try to use race to your advantage.
      If whtes doubt whether a black has earned what he has, it's because a lot of them haven't. They got it solely because they're black.
      Not all of them, but enough that it gives all of them a bad rep.

I'm not proud of the fact that I was once one of those white people who was a closet racist. I bought into all the subtle racism, having absolutely no idea that I was actually being racist. • @junelawson5719

      Why don't you try statistical analysis of available data? Nobody's going to be convinced by your experience, or any number of experiences, because they are anecdotal, cherry-picked (As in, a black man who has never been discriminated against would not claim he is being oppressed), subject to your own personal bias, and have no control (As in, you've never been white, therefore you can't isolate the variable of race). Go take a statistics class, analyse the data, and provide a compelling argument for racial discrimination; You'll find that this is much more effective.

      I'm biracial, my partner is white. He didn't believe me that people treat me differently than him (most likely because he doesn't see my race and of course hadn't/couldn't have experienced it himself), he'd become dismayed when I was upset coming home after a long day of facing yet more racism, he didn't want to think it was because of that, just that I had bad luck with people. So I decided to try a little experiment. We were out shopping one day, I told him I would enter into a store alone and that he should follow shortly after but was to keep enough distance that he could overhear the clerk and myself. I was approached by an employee who said in a tone that was both rude and dismissive "what do you want?!" I told her I could sort myself out and then she left, she spotted my partner slapped a smile on her face and asked him nicely if there was something she could help him with. He was shocked but I could tell not entirely convinced so we repeated this process in other stores. 4 out of 5 times it happened and that was enough for him, he finally understood. I think it is possible to teach people on a more personal scale but reaching the masses is quite a task.

      Ath elas
      That's an amazing story. I've never had it happen to me on that scale, however, I have experienced white cashiers spark warm, gentle conversations with white consumers and then when I come up in the line, they don't say a word or even look at me. I never understood this as a kid, until I got older and realized that they were racist people. There is no other way to explain this behavior, because I have noticed this ALL of my life. There have also been accounts of white fast food workers skipping over me and serving the white folks behind me. What made me sad was the fact the fact that I didn't speak up. What made me sadder was the fact that those being served also did not speak up, rather they just saw it as an opportunity to be served first. It's disheartening when people try to tell me this is all in my head or it doesn't happen. Also, many try to deflect by saying "blacks are racist too", despite never said they weren't. Speaking on my experiences somehow makes me a racist, even though I don't judge all white people based on the actions of some. So backwards.

    Lacy is conflating race with culture. There are tons and tons of black people who don't follow the "street"culture. There's a growing black middle class in America right now. There's also white people who play into the "street" culture. Anybody can be a part of a culture and or switch to different ones. Saying that one culture has more negative outcomes than another is not racist. It's a critiscm of ideaology and values that anyone can be a part of.

      Guillermo Marcelo De Santa Garcia but that doesn’t account for the systemic targeting of black peoples by police. So culture has no bearing on a racist prick doing racist things. MLK wasn’t a representative of thug culture but he still got assassinated by a white racist.

    • @kevinm4157
      @kevinm4157 6 років тому

      MLK? That was 50 years ago! The "systemic targeting" is a myth and it's easily proven. 1) Did you know that there are large subsets of blacks that hardly _ever_ get in trouble with the police? Blasians are one subsection. Half black, half Asian, they appear much like regular blacks, yet they are LESS LIKELY than *whites* to be imprisoned. That's only one subset, there are a number of others. 2) Did you know that Asians are over 3x less likely than *whites* to get killed by the cops? It's true you know. Now do you actually think that this army of supposedly racist police that love to kill black folks, somehow favor Asians over whites? OR, is it that Asians hardly ever resist arrest and fight with the cops, while blacks do so much oftener. In case you were wondering, it's the latter answer, FBI statistics prove it, year after year after year.

    *It's not racism, it's a fault of the capitalist system. People/families in America who are poor, stay poor. People/families who are rich, stay rich. Because of historical events, all black people started off poor and that's why it's been very hard for them to recover. This theory is also backed up by the fact that Asians and Indians don't seem to have these troubles, but Mexicans do. Why? Because Asians and Indians come to America with money and a plan (and yes, perhaps cultures which are slightly more conducive to success) and Mexicans usually don't come with anything. In America the poor stay poor and the rich stay rich. It's an economic/class problem, it's not racism (though the poor initial conditions were the result of racism).*

      Ryan Couture I have 3 uncles who are brothers. They grew up fatherless, and very poor. One of them has moved from poor to middle class. One of them has moved from poor to borderline rich. He works now 4 days per week, has several properties, a very nice home, and will retire in his mid fifties. The third uncle retired at 40 as a multimillionaire after selling the business he started. He's almost 60 now.
      None of them grew up with a father, got a college education of any kind, no IT certificates, nothing. One works hard, and two started their own businesses and were successful. Because capitalism allowed them to move from very poor to the 1%.

      Ryan Couture Nope. The defects of capitalism and racism can't be separated as neatly as that. The "historical events" you refer to were the decisions of a white power structure to keep people of color down. Those decisions continue to be made today. One way of keeping people of color down is to keep them poor. And not all poor people are treated equally -- though certainly it's true that all poor people are treated like shit. One method used by the white power structure to maintain its power is to turn poor whites against poor blacks. That's not merely capitalism, it's racism. Racism is a real, systemic, structural thing. It hurts real people.

    I think that we can all agree that those videos you put up to support your stance are extremely offensive lol. My issue with this though is your enabling of the theory of "White Privilege". You are entitled to your opinion and your exercising your right under our Constitution to free speech, which is good and what makes this country great. Here is my question, or counter if you would. The theory of "White Privilege" is board in it self and is a generalization of people based on skin color. It is nonsense to assume that "Privilege" is exclusively for only white people. Affirmative action, Organizations such as NAACP, United Negro Schoolars, NCNW is geared towards minorities. There is nothing inherently wrong with these programs, and they do good things for the community. My question is acknowledging all those organizations ( BTW there are many more) that cater to individuals based off of skin color would it be ( In your opinion ) rational to suggest that maybe we all have certain privileges regardless of skin color?

Also, with the term "Racist" so leisurely being thrown around ( mainly on the left ) to re enforce a position that panders to a people based on skin color and think gives like minded folks the the notion that its justifiable to burn down towns and hurting people is nonsense. Are you saying I don't understand what racist is because I argued that White Privilege is a term used to try to intellectually control and judge an entire people based on race? By that logic, a majority of people that adopt this philosophy are racist by their own definition lol. Look man, thier right to protest, thats fine. You not agreeing with me, that fine. But to imply that I am a racist because I don't believe in White Privilege is just silly. This notion has gotten people hurt, it's has pushed a divide between people, and still has yet to evan be proven it even exist. If you're gonna make a extreme statement that implies all white people have privilege you better be able to back it up. I have yet to see any evidence that doesn't conclude that Blacks have different privilege than whites but just about equal all the same.

      One incident doesn't mean you're being targeted. Even if you go by just the shooting videos it shows a different story. Many of the police shooting videos were of people who were not complying or had a weapon. Even the ones that were mostly unjustified, it's clear the officers panicked rather than targeting them for their race. There are plenty of things wrong with Police that we need to address and reform, but "racism" is only a very small issue of many that is being blown out of proportion and being treated as the main issue.

It was amazing/depressing that this community did everything they were "supposed" to do to make it in America, i.e. assimilate, accumulate wealth through hard work and investment, invest in their community, etc., and still was destroyed simply because they were black and the "good, white, Christian" people of Oklahoma did not like these successful black people.

That's patronizing to blacks and does not help their plight. 80% of children have no dad in the black community. I would say that's a character flaw if I ever heard one. I believe that everyone is a little bit racist just like that old song goes. people often dislike change and also are suspicious of those who are different. also many things can affect how others view other races. when I was in middle school I was one of only a few white kids in a mainly black school. I was beat up nearly every day there so even to this day I am a bit wary of being near black people, half the time when I first see a black person I think to myself that they could be dangerous. i know that there are plenty of good people of color out there i know a few great people who are black and i enjoy being around, but due to bad experiences i have a bit of prejudice, and we must not forget that its not just blacks being discriminated against, whites, Hispanics, Asians and everything in between is too.

    • @KofiWilliams
      @KofiWilliams 9 років тому +1

      First off why were you beat up? Then consider how ignorant and naive kids (keyword is kids) can be. Not everyone is racist even if a little bit. The word you're looking for is stereotype. We all stereotype but that's typically based on the way you dress, behave, and speak. Judging someone based on color alone or at all is racist and that's an extreme of stereotyping. Just like you have super Christians or feminist that hate men. I'm glad at least you can look at yourself and see what society would consider a flaw in yourself. You have awareness and that's important but don't justify to any amount that racism is OK. Use that awareness and your past experiences to judge others individually or not at all but don't let the amount of melanin dictate anything.

    Laci I want to start by telling you that you are such an amazing young woman! I'm not going to say that my opinions have changed because of you, but I will agree that my view towards woman has definitely been cemented. As for race, I would be the first to tell you that I fell in to the pressure of stereotypes. White America has forced both me and my father to grow up in a "Murican" society. Even though I'm Japanese I'm not put on this earth to help you with your math homework! I have academic struggles like the rest of you. To this day my biggest regret is not understanding the diversity and culture around my life. But I was told since birth that "the white way is the right way". That's where racism is still present. I will never be able to let my kids understand the Japanese culture.

    When I was in grade 5, we were in health class. I don't know how, but we started talking about Nicki Minaj. I don't like her, and I didn't then either. What I said: "I don't like her, she just looks like a black Barbie!" I meant that because she looked fake, she looked like a Barbie, except black, because Barbies aren't really black. Their reaction was to gasp and yell "That's racist!" Is that racist? NO! I was not discrimination even a little bit! I don't like Nicki Minaj because I think her music is terrible and she looks so fake and is a terrible role model. NOT BECAUSE SHE'S BLACK.

      Did you look at the Asian community?
      They are better represented on average in college despite the need of scoring higher than white counterparts. However, they are still being sidelined in ways that are not explicitly/obviously seen.
      Like for example, the fable bamboo ceiling where Asian are almost non-existent in upper management positions in a company. Or in the media, you will see never see Asian male lead as main character whereas the female asian are seen as dragon lady but tame-able by white guys.
      The bottom line the white in influential positions currently and looks to be so, thus the future will not change. That's how sad it is for minorities in Western countries. If they can do it, they will. That's how little faith I have with the white people at the top.

    I think it's funny that five years ago when this was made, I was a new-atheist anti-SJW edgelord dipshit in middle school who hated feminism, and now I'm basically a social justice warrior myself. Every point from what I can tell in this video checks out empirically, but back then, I would have just reflexively dismissed it as bullshit. Crazy how people can change, for the worst or for the better, in such a short period of time.

      @@DAEDRICDUKE1 I'm glad you found your way out of that shit. It's to be congratulated. It is true that some on the online left seem to value the aesthetics of leftism rather than actually changing society for the better and improving people's lives. I agree they are a huge optics liability, and I do wish leftists would push them out. Fundamentally, the goal of leftism is giving people more economic and social freedom, regardless of race, class, gender or gender identity, or sexual orientation. Leftism shouldn't be treated as an "identity" itself though, it's just a set of policy prescriptions meant to improve everyone's lives, and I think some leftists, often teenage leftists, either have missed or aren't old enough to get the point. I'm still glad you found your way out though. I'd rather you be a moderate than a super-far right white supremacist, even if you and I aren't necessarily in agreement of everything.

      @@tosca9127 As long as you aren't a fascist, you're OK in my book. I'd rather you be moderate than fascist, even if maybe you've shifted a little further to the center. Rn, so many people are falling to the far right, which is arguably much more dangerous than the far left. I'd rather have communists fighting for social democracy, egalitarianism, and unions than fascists calling for ethnostates, bigotry, and genocide. And if you're even moderate, like if you care about everyone, regardless of race, gender identity, gender orientation, even if you support capitalism, you're fine imo, and I hope more leftists online recognize this tactical unity, because we're all at threat from fascism. As long as you aren't far right, you're OK in my book. Just keep this in mind: what matters is people. Not "nations", or "states", or "aesthetics". People suffer, governments don't. So keep that in mind. I could probably give a better response, but I'm very drunk rn, so I gave it my all. Hope you got something from it.

    I will have to say we could meet up in the middle. I’m a Latino male, grew up in the Bronx nyc and Miami. I worked for must of my life in night club as bartender. And it wasn’t until I came to California was that I experienced some for of discrimination for being Latino.
    I could’ve easily gone the route of selling drugs to support myself but I know better than that. The easy thing would be to play the victim card. But I know better than that.

    Great video! I feel it is very important to educate white America about the challenges, and racism in America. I believe many know, but choose to deny, and blame victimized individuals. It's a shame how many traps the government has put before the black race, and how cunning the people are who created them. I believe America will always be haunted with guilt, and enemies until it changes its wicked ways. Peace, and Tranquility.
    A black man.

    • @nickharley2344
      @nickharley2344 8 років тому

      AL eng Great comment but your denial is irrelevant. Its irrelevant because its coming from a person who isn't affected by racism, and systematic oppression. You've never walked in a African Americans shoe's. And because of that its hard for you to empathize, or see things from our perspective.
      "How can a person have guilt and did nothing wrong?" I said America will always be haunted with guilt because it refuses to acknowledge, and change the mistakes of the past that it benefits from. Not only that but it continues the oppression in a psychological, systematic way.
      "Do you have guilt for so many blacks committing so many crimes?" No, because I'm educated. I know and understand how we're disproportionately incarcerated. I'm aware of the stereotypes, targeting, planting, and illegal incarceration of many African Americans. The media's constant negative imagery of African Americans is not only fraudulently inaccurate but is actually being done to engender a shift of victimization that changes the root problem of racism in America to be due to Black’s behavior rather than White’s proclivity for racism. That lessens pressure for social change on their behalf and makes any serious criticism of White racism almost impossible today. It also creates a false justification for the legal system’s mistreatment of African Americans.

      +AL eng the reason why you can't see out frustration is because you haven't endured it, you haven't been stopped on the road purely because of the color of your skin, you haven't been denied opportunities, and that's what racism is, it's having a certain Power and using it to control others, whilst benefiting from this. And in this case all the racist acts WE all see is purely because they are not ready to give up their Power yet and they're not gonna stop at all costs

I trust my statement was received to those who actually possess awareness, or deal with racism. The fact that you think people are just making things up is incredibly ridiculous. Future generations will shame you and many like you, for being so oblivious to the significance of these issues. Good day.

      jreed136 There's no doubt they will be aware of perception. Not just the perception, but how it is was indoctrinated in America.
      Centuries of propaganda, biblical dominionism, racial science, imperialism, and literature, is imbedded into the culture and psyche of most white people in modern America. But this is where the problem begins.

      Kurtis Bailey That's because white-on-black racism is a _lot_ worse than black-on-white racial hatred, given:
      1) The sheer disparity of the two phenomenons;
      2) The fact that the whites are the dominant race and the one with the resources to oppress the other. I don't see police brutality disproportionately affecting whites rather than males. Or employment disparity.
