This has to be Eric’s best line-up of musicians - Steve Gadd is without peer as a Rock/Blues drummer, so too Nathan East on bass, David Sanchez is a master Hammond organ player as well as being outstanding on other keyboards, Billy Preston has a proven background in the music industry which of course includes work with Beatles ( I swam him live on tour with Tina Turner back in the 1980’s, Andy Fairweather-Lowe has also played with some of the best and clearly relishes his role as rhythm guitarist for Eric…and then there’s the redoubtable Clapton at the peak of his powers on this track. Both solos he performs flawlessly continually increasing the intensity of the music until the composition reaches an emotionally-charged climax of apocalyptic proportions. This track is quite simply mesmerising!
Steve Gadd, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Nathan East, Andy Fairweather Low and David Sanchez. What a band! My God we will never see the likes of music like this ever again. They poured out their hearts and souls for all of us to enjoy! 48 dislikes and yes you are all disliked here. If you don't think this is the best music ever than go take your thumbs down to your grave.
Just saw him in Nationwide Arena on the 8th. It was magical. I've seen Eric 3 times. Each concert is unique I've seen lots of bands and lots of shows. Erics are different than anyone else I've ever seen. He played this song at that concert. IMHO it was the pinnacle of the show. As a working musician (guitarist) he stands alone. I'm at heart, a blues guitarist and he to me, is the greatest of all time.
Was introduced to Eric by my uncle... I lived it ever since!!! 30 years.. I will always listen to him... I wanna die listening to this song!!! Will be no pain what so ever!!!! It's the greatest musician of this style ever!!!!
I've seen Eric about 12 times and loved every one of them . Seen Eric last September and it was fantastic. The whole band was great. He plays with nothing but the best.
Please pray for all the mothers, Sisters and daughters in Ukrania that cry rivers of tears for the life of their fathers, brothers and sons. God Blessur them all
When Eric was a young lad, he played with a fury matched by none, Yardbirds, Cream, Blind Faith, Derek and the Dominos. Now he can play just a few soulful notes that can bring tears to your eyes. And then you bring back that fury when you were a young lad to show that you still have that spark compared to none. Thank you Eric for all the great years of your music.
Eric to me is the man , but every one of those musicians on that stage are talented dudes man, and all the bands he's ever played with or had they've all been excellent musicians it makes a difference they bring it all together he plays the lead guitar and sings and that he is the man
This is my FAVORITE Clapton song & possibly his best performance of it.❤ I just feel the music of his blues guitar. Billy Preston is phenomenal - all of them are just awesome. I'm blown away how great a performance, listening repeatedly.
I was lucky enough in 2001 to see them on this tour, Last car, Last rider. I had never heard this song before. I saw him again a few years later. I like EC's songs that weren't top 40 hits. Like this one. This is perfect in every way. It's been my favorite song by him since then.
Every fiber of my being feels every beat of the drum, stroke of keys on the hammond, notes on the strings and the vocals. Thank you gentlemen for the food for the soul.
Yes, amen to that! Eric pulled together a super group here. Would’ve loved to have seen it in person. Steve Gadd on drums, Billy Preston on keys. Everyone on that stage are top tier soulful musicians.
This song on this album is for me the best work that Clapton has ever giving us. At the end of the song watch Clapton smile a Steve Gadd. It's as if he is saying that was the most fucking incredible drum playing I have ever heard. After hopefully watching it you feel as Ido. Blues doesn't get any better than this.
My absolute favorite Clapton songs. The mournful bluesy sound, incredibly poetic lyrics, some of his best most soulful singing, the amazing llyrical guitar intro, and phenomenal guitar solo. Bravo. I true masterpiece that doesn't get played enough
He wrote a song of tears in heaven. Apparently it doesn't bother him that many little children were murdered, burned, abused, thrown into the fire, burned alive, so all the songs he wrote are worthless. Neither he nor Hamsnikim's guitar
EC phrasing, touch and feel is unequaled. One bend of a string has more soul and feel than all these so called shredders an ever dream of. EC is the greatest of his generation, who set the bar so high that few will ever reach.
Yep I play electric guitar and I've always tried to put my soul into every note clapton is the bench mark from my first E5 chord to everything today ,brilliant musician
It’s a performance but you’d have to be mostly dead not to be moved hearing this. Every musician is right there, and we’ve all had our losses. Perfection in the musical expression of pure emotion. Masterful, intense and wonderful.
Eric Clapton is the best there is no one who even comes close! The whole band is perfect I love you and listen to you every day Thank You for all that you give keeps me wanting more 🙂💛
The maestro......there will never, never, never be one who puts so much soul and emotion into his performing.... the guitar is an appendage, the Maestro

Over the last twenty years or so, this particular recording has gotten me through so much trauma in my life. It may, in fact, be his best performance ever. The song and performance are so powerful!
Over the years, and Im talking years here I was 8 years old and already a fan when he was in Cream. Then I became a huge fan starting in the Layla years. I have remained a huge fan, but I did have a hard time warming up to some of his newer albums like this album Pilgrim. However I now love this a whole bunch. This performance is outstanding. The people out there that berate him as a guitarist just will never get that its not about playing a million notes a second. Its about soul, its about melody. This song has it all. Love Eric.
I agree, but Steve Winwood is only a baby step away. They both exhibit a mutual respect, love, and admiration of each other. Their duets are untouchable !

Absolutely love this song, absolutely love Clapton. Such a great songwriter, such a great guitarist. Clapton is a man who has such a great feel for melancholy. That sadness born from personal anguish that personifies the empathetic soul. Every note brings to bare the emotions of the song and while we hear him, it is through the filter of our own life that the meaning takes root in the most perfectly personal way.
