- I set out for the day with the aim of catching a Ling, maybe some conger eel. I still cannot get over the success of this trip. I was fishing in around 230ft water out of Falmouth in Cornwall. I came away with a huge new PB that I don't think I will be beating anytime soon!! I hope you enjoy this and please like and subscribe!

Last time I caught a Ling that big was 1989 out of Brighton Marina on a Boat called " Riptide " the skipper Derrick was an absolutely fella always put you over the best wrecks
TheAudiostud - BIG ling used to be quite a regular occurrence out on the deep wrecks but sadly like a lot of fish they’re few and far between now. We get a few into the mid 20’s every year but not many. Scotland/Shetland is the place I think you need to go now for the real big ones. 👍🏻🎣😉🐟
Been out with him got me in the conger club 71 lbs my PB
Ding-a-bloody-ling! Can't believe I'm watching fishing and enjoying it - I'm hooked!
- Haha. Its addictive mate. We'll make a fisherman of you yet. :P
Hello Mr Fish Locker, that is the first time I have heard you say. I Think I Need a Sit Down.
Fantastic. Thank you for sharing.
Haha. It was more the surprise than the exertion I think.lol.
The look on your face! Even when it's in the boat...Isn't joy or excitement.... Its disbelief! That's when you know it's a monster fish. That gob smacked look!
- Haha. There's no faking that face is there. Total WTF face!!! :D
Cracking Ling John. Ive only ever had baby ones. Something special about a PB out in your own boat and its all your own work. No charter skipper putting you on them.
Barry C - Yes mate I am especially happy with it. I made the rigs for them, picked the wreck and fished it on my own boat and landed it solo. I’m very proud of this PB. It was a cracking fish aswell, really well proportioned. My wife’s going to make a catch and cook vid from it later. 👍🏻🎣🐟
That was a cracking Ling well done. I haven't caught a ling for years
Trojs Fishing - They aren’t really a fish that I often target as they don’t go back very well. Most times their swim bladders blow and you cannot release them. Still very nice to eat - we’ll be eating it for a while. Haha.👍🏻🎣🐟
Sat with the boss watching on sofa didn't realise I was laughing so much, she said what are you laughing at hes just fishing , I said I feel his pain you were huffing and puffing on the conger after that huge ling ...awesome
- Haha. I missed the start of the ling which was insane. It nearly had the rod out of my hand and I couldnt turns he camera on!! Glad you got a laugh out of it anyway. 😊
Excellent film, cheers John and tight lines, from Weebarra.
SteadyingBoat - Cheers bud. Got one you might like going up tomoro night at 19:00. 😉🎣
WOW best ling i have seen so far this year. you done right moving wrecks. cant wait for the next one....
leonard whelehan - Not sure how I’m meant to follow a fish like that though mate.lol
your the man to watch...
Proper stoked for you having that Ling john 👍 nice to see them that size still
- Aye mate I was buzzing too. You don't see them that size often. Its the biggest I've ever seen in the UK.
Wow!.....what a huge ling . Well done and thanks for sharing.
mart2mart - Thankyou very much, it’s no problem at all - I hope the video was both helpful and good viewing. 👍🏻🎣
Ling a Ding Ding!
Nice one John mate.
Michael Scott - Thanks Michael, she was a brute. Definitely a PB that will take some beating!! 😉🎣
Another amazing vid,and I don't even fish the sea ! How can anyone give you a thumbs down .....keep em coming!!
Phil Thorpe - Beats me Phil. But then again, some folks are never happy. 🤷🏻♂️🎣 Glad you enjoyed it mate. This is a PB I don’t think I’ll be beating any time soon. 😉👍🏻🎣
Excellent! - that Ling was awesome; I thought it’s gotta go nearly forty ; not a bad guess 😉 Tight lines 👍
- She was an absolute monster wasn't she. I don't think I'll be beating that PM any time soon. :P
What an absolute monster ling that was. Cracking session John, thanks for sharing and congrats on your PB.
Sussex Seagull - Thanks mate. I was in total shock when it hit the surface.haha. Im glad you enjoyed it. I think that PB is going to last for some time.haha. 👍🏻🎣😁
Well done again John lad. That ling was a belter. 39lb ling and the shore bass record honestly well done mate 👍👍👍
- Thank you very much mate.
Old video I know..but what a ling John ..
I keep on looking at your older stuff..some real fish and real species ..keep them coming!!
- I like to watch one of the older vids from time to time. Both to see the fish and also to see how far we have come as a channel. Tight lines mate. ;)
You are professional i like that you explain everything in youre videos
This is simply my passion. 👍🏻😊
Fascinating watching this vid John and congratulations - a fantastic Ling. Phil Manchester.
phil brooke - Haha. This is one of those mental fishing moments that really took me by surprise. I think the look on my face said it all. Definitely a PB I don’t think I’ll be beating any time soon. 😉👍🏻🎣🐟
John,
It would be nice to see some of the wreck images on the fish-finder ,I remember fishing the Jersey Queen, Spital and Eskdale to name a few many years ago ,Good stuff.
- Have you seen the How to use a GPS and fish finder video?
I love watching the fishing shows only when they catch something. But I like your show even when you catch a few or even if you catch a dogfish. If I go out I'll come back and rewind to see what I missed even when I doze off. I'll wake up and watch some more. You are a good host.
- Haha. Thank you Rosemary I really am so pleased that you are enjoying our content so much. Hopefully we an get out soon to make some more. :D
Top show John on my tv,the definition n sound are first class, and,I’m learning still no Orkney spinner sir,ha.
Just keep looking mate. Send me a PM to the fishlocker fb page so I defo have your details and if I see one I'll send you a message. 😉👍🏻
Watched a lot of these vids last night , got up early today to watch more before work , great filming , great tips, top channel .
bryn mitchell - I’m glad you found this video. It’s one of my favourites - for obvious reasons. 😉 Like I said, my wrecking rig is great for ling. 😊🎣😁
@@TheFishLocker I shall be looking at more of your vids after work tonight, if I can find more ! Cant wait for tomorrow , off to the Llyn peninsula with the inflatable, probably too shallow for ling but pollock and maybe Conger, hope the mackeys are in as I have no bait , only lures, your vids have fired me up to be on the water !3 days of camping, fishing ,and maybe a drop of the good stuff.Keep em coming John lovin the vids ! great tip for the Bass strikes too .
bryn mitchell - No problem Bryan, good luck and let me know how you get on. 👍🏻🎣
That was a great day. I have caught two ling cod from a pier on Bremerton Island, Washington State. They were huge! One broke my pole, snapped it. So nice to see you catch that big giant.
You're a great advert for for South West England.
- They may get confused by my accent though.lol
"Why cant ya find anything when ya need it!" ... that ling is FAT... enjoyed the buzz on that one too mate, is a banger
- Haha. No matter how prepared you are you can never find something when you really need it can you. Cheers mate, I was buzzing from that one!!!
What an outstanding day you had. As a recent subscriber, I find your fishing style and delivery quite entertaining and educational.
You don’t piss around John, when it comes to fishing do ya my mate 👌😆👍
Haha. No I don't mate. When I'm on the boat I mean business. 🤣
Another great video fish locker! great content I love the variation covering everything from catching to cooking and everything in between you’re clearly very knowledgable and enjoying life with your family I’m a chef so I enjoy the cooking parts also our new boat will be ready to fish in a few days so all of your videos have given inspiration ideas and a eagerness to get out and do some fishing the boat will be ready soon maybe I’ll post a video or 2! Thanks again I look forward to any new content 5*
- Thank you very much Adam. I think it is our varied content and actual knowledge that sets us apart from others who try to do what we do. I hope you enjoy the rest of our videos. Good luck with your boat and tight lines. 👍
That was some Ling, well done mate. Loving the channel sir.
dougsmcv - Thanks for the positive feedback mate. Aye, she was a belter!! Hope to get out after some more big fish soon!!!👍🏻🎣
Amazing video..i am from Portugal..living and fishing in uk for 4 years
.good tips ..I watch all your videos I wish o e day fishing with you
Ruben Epifanio - If you are even in Falmouth, there is a charter boat called Anglo Dawn. I will be working with them so we may just get chance. 👍🏻🎣😉
@@TheFishLocker Is that still valid? I'm from London and sometimes I'm fishing off the rocks down the lizard - but a day out on a boat would be great. Is that a possibility?
UR Capoeira London - Send us a PM on the Fishlocker fb page.
Holy Crap,,,,Didn't think that was coming up,,,lol. Well done John
- Haha. She shocked me when she hit the surface. Not a PB I think ill be beating any time soon. :P
Great watching and a cracking ling 👍
johnathan preece - Thanks Johnathan. Aye she was a bruiser! 😊👍🏻🎣
really enjoyed watching that mate and wow what a cracking ling that was! keep up the good work mate and tight lines
Masterfisherman - Thankyou. You to mate. 👍🏻🎣
Bloody hell, that's a belter of a Ling. last time I caught one of those must be about 35 years ago out of Bridlington. Only found your videos since you joined our FB group a couple of weeks ago ( Sea Angling Mad ), all the ones I've watched are top notch, well done, and thanks for taking the time and effort to post 👍👍👍
Anthony Harrison - Thankyou very much. Aye she was a proper bruiser.haha. A PB I don’t think I’ll be beating any time soon. There used to be some cracking wreck fishing out of Brid and Scarborough but sadly now it’s not what it was. I’m glad you are enjoying the vids - I’ll share a couple more to the group over the next few days. Hopefully if this crap weather sorts itself out I’ll be able to get a few new ones done. 😉 All the best mate. 👍🏻🎣
Good Stuff!!!!
Wicked man🤘🏼 , some people watch sitcoms, others watch the fish👍🏻
Yes they do
Wowsers John what a great ling catch 39lbs good darts sir 👍🏻🇬🇧
- Cheers Mark, she was some brute wasn't she. :P
I'm 64 and from Yorkshire (we get some good Ling up there) and I've never seen one that big, I think about 25lb is the biggest I've seen and my best is about 20lb, that's in 56 years of fishing
David Storton - Hi David, where abouts in Yorkshire are you from? She was a big old lump.haha. A PB I doubt I’ll be beating - at least not any time soon. 😉👍🏻🎣
Nice catch! You live the life I wish I had. Love yor channel, keep em coming !:D
- Im just sharing what I love doing mate. All the best. ;)
Absolute Brute of a Ling well done and thanks for sharing the video.
- My pleasure Adam. Tight lines.
what a fish, almost looks like a pale catfish! Ling you say? Outstanding!!! Love your videos mate, very calming and relaxing.
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it. 😊👍🏻🎣
I only ever caught 3 sea fish in my lifetime...the one and only time I went boat fishing with huge chrome perks on wrecks off Whitby in 1979, an 11 pound ling, 8 pound cod and 3 pound pouting. The rest of the trip was largely spent leaning over the side....
- Haha. Whitby back in the day was the place to be. Sadly now the fishing has been hammered for so long that its poor most of the time. :(
That is a giant, another great video. Thanks. Think you're going to need a bigger oven!
Matt Hooper - Haha. Cheers mate. Yes the freezer is well stocked now. My wife is planning on doing a catch and cook with some of it so stay tuned. ;)
@@TheFishLocker When I was a boy me and my dad went on our first boat trip with Frank Vinnicombe. The boat took 1200lb of fish but we failed to catch. Our leads were huge (5lb) an d we hit bites and reeled up empty hooks that felt like huge fish. We were used to canal fishing so we didn't let bites develop. Anyway, the lads did give us a ling so we barbequed giant ling steaks on Falmouth beach that night. One of my all-time best meals. Ps That day the sea was the colour and viscosity of tomato soup for miles and miles, we fished twenty miles out and it hadn't stopped. Frank said he'd never seen it like that before. Have you?
Michael Naylor-Hodgkinson - What a wonderful story. I have never known the sea to be the consistency of tomatoe soup. That is interesting
Plenty of ling of the holderness coast but nothing that big fantastic fish well done getting it out of the wreck fish of a lifetime
Graham Precious - Thanks Graham. There always used to be a decent summer run of them off the north east coast. Like you say though average between 8-18lb.
Bloody hell - AWESOME !!!
Giles Killinger - Haha. That’s what I thought when it hit the surface. All the way up I though, has to be a big eel. Then as soon as I saw it about 12ft down I couldn’t believe it. What a bruiser!!! Shows the rig works. 😉👍🏻🎣
Monster Ling indeed John. Congrats!
Zeke Fishy - Cheers Zeke. The rig I used is good for congers and cod to. 😉👍🏻🎣 there’s a link in the vid I think.
@@TheFishLocker aye! i watched it already John, thanks.
FECKING HELL!!!!
YOU'VE DONE IT AGAIN! HAHA! AMAZING.
- Haha. Just lucky mate. ;)
You need to get yerself up to The North Wales Cost Line or better still the Lyn Peninsula, Steaming out of Rhyl for a cheeky 5 hour on Thursday, Great Video's Very Well Presented
- Haha. Why would I want to travel all that way when I can catch fish like this at home? :P
what a beautiful Ling...you lucky guy to be fishing our fantastic British Waters
- She was an absolute beast wasn't she. Thats a PB I don't expect to be beating any time soon.
5 Foot!? ,well Done John! Grats 👍
Cracking ling what a day
👍👍👍😜🏴✌️
chopperhehehe - Haha. Yeah that was a very special day. 😊 We don’t get ling like that very often round here. A few 20-25’s a year. Most around 12-20. She’s a PB I don’t think I’ll be breaking any time soon.haha. 😉👍🏻🎣🐟
Mine is only 16 and that was fun 😜👍👍👍🏴✌️
chopperhehehe - Still a nice fish mate. 👍🏻🎣 Have you seen the catch and cook video we have done with Ling making them into fish cakes? They are delicious!!! 😛👍🏻🎣🍽
I shall be looking at them lol 👍👍👍🏴✌️😜
Very interesting, relaxing. And wholesome video. Thanks for sharing.
- It is our pleasure. 😊
Ur right there that lings a monster haha
- haha. Told ya. ;)
Great video & cracking ling
The Vaping Detectorist - Cheers bud.👍🏻
It’s been a great day for you m8 well done cracking fish’s 👍
kanchour16 - Thankyou. Yes, some days are just perfect. Thankyou for watching. 👍🏻🎣
What a beast! Great job....
- Thanks Chris, she sure was a PB I don't think I'll be eating any time soon.lol
Cracking fish. Well done
Colin Philpott - Cheers bud. 👍🏻🎣
Watched this video about 5 times now so thought I'd comment 😂 absolute beast of a ling 👌 and probably the best eating whitefish in my opinion and I'm sure people will disagree which is fair enough as everyone to there own. Keep these videos coming mate there spot on 👍
Alex Goodman - Thankyou very much for the comment. I’ve watched this one a fair few times myself - She was an absolute monster. Definitely don’t expect to see one like that again any time soon. All the best mate. 👍🏻🎣
@@TheFishLocker and you my mate 👌 tight lines 🐟
Tight lines mate👌🏼
- Thank you very much mate. Tight lines. :)
Great vid fella. Love wrecking but ill health has held me back in recent years. Going start back now though!
- Thats a shame to hear Tony. I hope you are well on the mend and good luck. :)
i do love wreck fishing ,, i make my own perks out of scrap lead and chrome tube , split rings and lures
I used to do that back when I was a lad. 😊
QUITE A VENTURE ON YOUR OWN PAL, BIG UP TO YA M8, { wish i had a boat...lol }
- Thank you Ian. You should see some of our other videos. The sharks, overnight eel trips and the Tuna. 👍
omg! monster ling m8! awesome
686bim - Haha yeah, this one is one of those video moments where I think my face says it all. Really wasn’t expecting that to be a ling, was so big I was sure it had to be an eel. 😆 Insane fishing and a monster PB 👍🏻🐟🎣
What a beast of a ling ,an absolute monster of a fish good stuff
Still my PB to this day!!!
Holy shit dude! Wasn't expecting that lol
Lex Linux - Haha. I don’t mess about. I love my wreck fishing but I have to admit when that brute hit the surface it surprised me to. Biggest ling I’ve ever caught. 👍🏻🎣😉🐟
@@TheFishLocker haha! You could really tell from the reaction you gave lol, what a fish! Easily the biggest ling I've ever seen someone catch here on UA-cam! Tightlines! :D
Hope so mate, thank u for the reply, u have inspired me, just got a new helix 9 humming bird latest edition installed and its fecking awsum, almost cheating if u like but can't wait to see what's out there on the eastury 🙋♂️
Best of luck to you mate. 👍🏻
Nice ling, my best was 43lb out with Geordie Dickson back in the day.
He to was from the North East plying his trade in the English Channel.
Nice!!!
that eel was huge... the head alone... fish whisperer
- That is another PB I don't think I shall be beating any time soon. haha 😊
That ling is a giant! hopefully when we're allowed back out my mom will book me a fishing trip out in North Shields for another session of deep sea fishing cos i've heard there are big cod and ling out on the wrecks
my first ever boat fishing trip over in Bridlington was a great one and i landed my personal best of a 3lb cod, hopefully i can get bigger when i go on my next trip, good video man!
- Best of luck to you William. 😊
3pound cod?? we use that as bait..:)
Great vid and nice ling. It's a shame. but there's not many that can go back from that depth of water.
william dodd - Thankyou William. Yes sadly there isn’t, I managed to get one to go back, it just all depends on how quickly you bring it up to the surface. If I had known it was a long and not and eel I would have been a bit more gentle with it. 😉👍🏻🎣
Congratulations on your pb ling mate, absolute cracking fish 👍
frosty 1971 - Thanks Frosty 😉 Aye she was a proper bruiser. Definitely a PB I don’t think I’ll be beating. That wrecking rig really is great for finding the ling. 👍🏻🎣
@@TheFishLocker I'm off out on a wrecking trip this weekend, would be good to hit into something that size, but tbh, I'll just be as happy to get a bend in the rod🎣👍
frosty 1971 - Where are you off? Pollacking on the lures? Big tides aren’t they?
@@TheFishLocker going out from Weymouth in Dorset. Will be fishing shads and eels I expect. No so sure on the state of tides tho🤔
frosty 1971 - They’re pretty decent sized tides. I have a couple of friends who fish down there a lot. Fins up is one who comes highly recommended. 👍🏻🎣
I love watching your videos with 'captioning' switched on: entertaining at the best of times, the captioning system cannot cope with your accent and frequently gets it wrong in a most entertaining fashion!!!!
- Haha. The subtitles are hilarious aren't they. :D
That is a massive ling
But from an inshore mark its its incredible 😳😳😳👌👏👏👏
- Its the biggest I've seen or heard from in a long time round here. They do get bigger off the Scottish wrecks but not round here. ;)
@@TheFishLocker yes I have not seen a ling like that since I worked on a netter in the 80s ..... a true monster
Great fishing mate I’ve started uploading some videos of our fishing from a small boat in South Wales
Gowersghost - Cool. I’ll sit down and have a look tonight. 👍🏻🎣
Your videos are brill keep up the good work
Lee Needham - Thankyou very much Lee, I’m glad you’re enjoying them. Any particular type you like most? 😉👍🏻🎣🐟

Love your stuff mate, I'm itching to get out, got a nice warrior 175 sitting on loch lomond but really want to get out onto the salt and get some proper big ling and pollock and seabass
Fingers crossed it won't be too long for you mate. 😊
Nice one . . .
- Thanks bud, they don't often come that big!!
Hi John thanks for another great adventure, what a massive Ling, you stated Ling dont go back too well from deep water,
but do they eat well?what do they taste like Eel or cod maybe. thanks for any feedback.
- My wife has done a fantastic catch and cook video turning ling into fishcakes. Check it out in the Catch and cook playlist
That was a nice fish
Lawrence Thompson - She absolutely was mate. I don’t think I’ll be seeing one like that again for a while. 😉👍🏻🎣
Some people spend a fortune over years in the hope of a fish like that and there lies the addiction in the hope (one day)@@TheFishLocker
Lawrence Thompson - You are absolutely right mate. 👍🏻🎣
WoW 😃👍
- Thank you very much.
His evening you hit 160k subscribers, I’ll be happier when you hit 250k , you deserve more.👍

@@TheFishLocker I always do, as soon as I spot fishing rods when visiting people’s houses in my job, I ask them if they watch you for tips, I’ve actually met a a gentleman in Falmouth who said he knows you very well.
@@stephenroberts7104 - Haha. Really? What’s his name?
@@TheFishLocker I’m not allowed to say, as it’s work related, forgive me, Im not being rude John, I can say he lives in a bungalow on a steep hill and I sold him a boiler. as I’m going through a divorce and moving , I would like to make new friends, any chance for a chat? I will buy a boat, probably from Falmouth yacht brokers, as I’ve spoken to them, I have a work colleague who’s into fishing big time, kayaks, 16.5 ft boat , he uses them, i don’t know how UA-cam messages work is this broadcast or sent just to you?
Hi Mate, it's Cloughy from KAF. Really enjoying watching your videos. Great stuff. Best of luck pal.
Michael Clough - Haha. How you doing shippers. You still in the MOB? How did you find the vids? I spoke with Chewitt a couple of weeks back. He’s civvy side aswell. You stay safe mate. 😉👍🏻
Hi mate. I left the Navy in 2015 but just rejoined again in September last year. Only got 6 years left until pension so just grit my teeth and get it done. Bloody great thing you've got going on here. I wish you every success with it. Keep up with the great content and you'll be reeling in the subscribers. I looked for you on facebook because something popped up on my news feed from Afghan so wondered what you were up to. Take care mate.
Michael Clough - Aye mate, head down and it’ll be up in no time. Longhurst is a PO at a Raleigh. I think Chewitt is working in the prison service. Not sure about Leaver. He’ll probably have his 22 by now. I’m sure he served with Nelson.haha. 😛 This started off as just a bit of fun to help folks out but who knows where it may lead.
Jees, 5 feet and over 30. Tis bigger than me. Some nice beasts there John.
HUBBY - TUB - I couldn’t get over the size and breadth of its head. What a monster!!! 🐟🐟🐟
Going for a Fal bash this weekend on the yak. Hopefully a monster Huss will come my way. Keep the vids coming John.
HUBBY - TUB - I’ve had a few up towards KHF and I know a lad who’s had a few nice ones in the Roads. Good luck and let me know how you get on. 👍🏻🎣
Snotty estuary today and suffered it for 4 hours. Managed to hook a huge lobster but he let go at the front of the yak. Hey ho. gutted. other than that, 1 doggy.
- Well at least you got out there and gave it a crack. There have been quite a few mackerel showing the past few days out in the bay, some boats even landing small Bonito in amongst them. Maybe worth a shout?
Huge eel
Not bad was it. 😉
39# is the limit here. 38# must go back. Don't have congers. Heard all good things
- Congers are good fun and you can find some real whoppers in the wrecks around here. ;)
Hi great videos as usual, i've learned lots watching them. I have a question on life jackets I wondered what make/brand you use. Cheers
There is a video on the Fishlocker workshop channel all about my Lifejacket.
You Lime =ees R So Funny... I Go out of my back yard, " Dingy launch " & catch Lings from 40 to 70 pounds in less then one hour, All times of the year ! Kodiak Alaska, Yep'' UM" Some folks consider Lings Trash Fish in my Parts,, Not me, But Halibut & Salmon R the fish of choice in these Parts, But 4 me Ling & flat fish r what I like to eat, I do like some of the 5 types of salmon & sea water trout that abounds in our waters, i.e. Dolly Varden ... kodi
- Haha. You are fortunate enough to live in an area that is still close to being a wilderness. Here a ling of 40lb is unheard of. In fact that year this fish was recorded as being the largest one caught in my whole area. Your lingcod are slightly different as well. You sometimes get blue ones don't you. :)
Hi John,I'm having a go at making some slow jig rigs, have you any idea what the line is that the hooks are tied with?
Looks like cord with shrink tube.
- Yes it is. Just chord with shrink tube. I have made some assist hooks myself in the past. :)
@@TheFishLocker Thanks pal
I hope you released the ling. After surviving so long he deserved to be set free.
- Ling do not survive well after being caught. So it came home with me and fed my family for many days. :D
What a way to spend the day , lovely video very good commentary, Better than some other videos from across the Pond. Short but sweet commentary. Does your Partner welcome you home with open arms ? Thanks for sharing this video. Tight Lines in Future. 👌👌
- Haha. On days when I've been fishing she welcomes me home, but won't touch me until I've changed my clothes and washed the smell off. ;)
