Just come across this chanel, well cool. This is me at 42! I've been skateboarding for 4 months now, Im loving every minute. I got bored of watching my 3 year old son at the skate park on his balance bike. I went to my local skate shop bought a deck and a suit of armer and started. For me I feel burnt out, and skating, running or kite surfing is like un zipping the zip on my head and letting the world out. I can be with my son, which I can't when I'm doing other hobbies. This helps with marriage!!! The progression has been really cool, every 3 or 4 sessions something else clicks. Gd luck, keep pumping the content
keep at it man 45 and just starting to get back at it after a 15yr hiatus it makes me appreciate the things i used to do and hopefully get back to once i get my acl sorted throw them shoulders and don't be hesitant to plant them feet you'll be poppin big spins before you know it
Good vid Rich, important things to say. Been watching these for a couple of months now with full solidarity having started skating properly earlier this year at the age of 39 (previously could push and kinda ollie stationary). Great to watch your progress. The highs and lows of fighting for a trick (manoeuvre is probably more appropriate at my level) and then landing it was one of the first things I noticed - its a great life tool for demonstrating perseverance and reward. Unfortunately (fortunately?) now I spend all my time thinking about getting back out skating when I should be persevering at other stuff 😂. Based in London too so might bump into you at one of the spots one day. Keep up the good work!
hitting the nail on the head there in a number of ways - total arrested development being an old skater - especially when you are mid work task and think "can i squeeze in a skate at lunch" becuase your brain is still processing push, flick, jump, bend knees. i struggled a lot with every trick so far, but have forgetten all struggles the moment i landed it. skating is mad. say hello if we cross paths!
I’m 42 and I’ve been skateboarding for about a month now. Really enjoy it and go down the multi-storey car park most nights and skatepark most weekends. My best trick is falling haha. You have to fall to learn. Great video. Keep up the good work
@@Ungracefulmovement I normally go on a Monday as Sunday is packed. Although half term is coming up next week so everyday could be busy. Yeh weather is a pain. That’s why I go to a car park. It’s undercover.
@@Ungracefulmovement I’m a returning skater, skated as a teen then took a 15ish year break… As a kid I learned regular shuvs first But this time round I did fakie ones first. I also found just to get rolling fakie I liked to ride slowly up a ramp and roll back down, rather than having to thing of body varial/reverts. It’s also just such a fun trick 🛹
@@alecfrancis2084 right now rolling out of the ramp feels too quick, so the BV helps me slow it down to a snail pace. Def want to get regular (and pop)
@@Ungracefulmovement yeah I get that! BS revert - fakie shuvs - BS kickturn is also a great fun lil trick to get down once you’re more comfy with them. Keep smashing it mate I’m loving your videos!
Dude, this hit home. I screwed up an important presentation at work and it freaking destroyed me mentally. I’m 40 and learning to skate, those few hours skating was a nice escape
Thank god for skateboarding, that's all I can say! It saves me on a regular basis! This imposter syndrome thing sucks for sure, your not alone. Skateboarding is my therapist and it works for me. I think the pain element of skateboarding (not just physical pain but the mental anguish that can be endured battling a trick) adds a reality which is hard to find elsewhere as it actually makes you feel something. Likewise, landing a trick you have worked and battled for gives you that happy high. Skating keeps me in check for sure. Great progress man
I know we all get that imposter thing - whenever i bring it up, people go "yeah, we all get that, it's not unique" - I don't know how people aren't crippled by it. You can see in your videos man, focus, escape, solitude, it's clearly a happy place.
@@Ungracefulmovement I think if you have support and people who believe in you it makes the imposter thing more bearable. Knowing that it’s common helps too so thanks for highlighting it
Thanks for talking about your mental health. I feel like talking about mental health is something that needs to become normal. A couple of my recent videos have been about my mental health. At first I thought it would be dumb to talk about it. But, as it turns out, it’s been super helpful. The older beginner skate community on YT has been amazingly supportive. Nice work on those fakie shuvs. 👊👍
Thanks for watching! i nearly deleted the whole thing for risk of putting too much out there, then thought f*** it (that's how i know i'm a skater). I'm having a look at your video now. that thing you say at the beginning "not wanting a pity party" sums up what goes through my head any time i talk about feeling low.
You’re so right - as someone who has struggled with MH recently, skateboarding has really helped - 2 hours focussing on something else gives you space to heal and gives your brain a break from worry and doubt. Not to mention the benefits of exercise too and the social side of it. We have a very likeminded group of beginner/not so beginner adults up in Herts & Bucks if you ever fancy a trip north just drop us a message.
Love a body Varial! T’s looking nice… champion 👌 mad how you went all deep and then went “skateboarding” and my mind went straight to skateboarding… it really does take our mind off things 😂
Haha that's funny... like shut up! SKATEBOARDING, whoop. btw the Champion tee was a sample (turned out only available from US and took 3 weeks to deliver)
Nice, that body varial is very good for balance and also the gate to learn some fakie tricks (fakie shuv, ollie) Well done 👍 I need to get back to these too ;)
Been watchin from Australia and getting back into it at 48yo. Enjoying your journey mate, keep it up. ps Throw those shoulders of yours a bit more and earlier.. Peace.
cheers dude! where in Aus? I bought my first skateboard somewhere around the gold coast (sorry if you're the same Australian i said that to before) and thanks for the shoulders note.
Quality as usual. I get the mental health point for me it’s a double edged thing. On the one hand I love skating because of the feeling and quiet time. On the other hand I suffer from social anxiety so going to an actual skatepark with real people is quite triggering. Quite a contradiction which is holding me back abit. Anyway, randomly, born and raised in Barking, sods law that I moved away and they get a great indoor skatepark!
I still get park anxiety but it’s getting better. It’s important to remind oneself that you have just as much right to be there as the dude pulling insane shit all over the place. Take your time, and take pride and enjoyment in learning your 180 kickturn or whatever; it’s valid and it’s skateboarding.❤
@@sparkybat9177 if you see the clip at the end of the video, that was a pre arranged old man night but I had no idea there’d be so many people. I was paralysed for the first half an hour not able to warm up or have confidence in taking up space. Luckily mostly everyone was super friendly, and being offered a beer helped, and eventually I got a really nice session out of it. Just getting through that limp at the beginning is tough
@@Ungracefulmovement Ah- I had no idea you were struggling a bit! Makes sense though, you don’t know most of those guys at all plus there’s some really great skaters and also some big personalities. Mix all that into a physically tight environment and anyone is gonna feel a bit daunted😃. Was a great session though and glad you warmed into it- there’ll be more!
One you get more used to riding switch/fakie you'll be doing the fakie shuv everytime. You already have them down now once you get going. To help with the switch riding I would just find a stand alone bank or quarter pipe and just ride up and back down fakie over and over again. If you can find a big ramp that would be better as you can start low and build your way up to increase the speed of the switch riding. If you want something a little more than just riding you can throw in some ollie fakies (if its a bank) or rock fakies (if its a quarter). This is how I learnt to ride switch, Ollie on a bank and I would fakie ollie on the flat when rolling away. I spent a full session doing this as a kid one boxing day in Manchester. I remember it clearly.
47 yr old skater here...is it too cold to just bust these in a parking lot? My advice is learn to ride the board and just pump and ride it hard, cruise the board....then the tricks will come easier when you have gotten to know the board more, keep it up! Enjoyed the content.
Love your content man, keep killing it! As an older beginner skater myself, you are one of the people that have inspired me to learn to vlog and create/edit my own content as well and I would love for you to check it out!! Just wanted to say thank you for that 💙and keep up the great work!!
Nice body varials 👌 - still afraid of those. With the shuvs for me the mental block is of course the jump here also. Hope it'll be evaporate soon... Skateboarding, altough it can get often frustrating - overall having a good effect on mental health - that's what they say. As I experienced so far, maybe not without a reason.
Underated beginner tricks - hippie jumps and body varials. You can do them on carpet, grass, stationary on concrete, then moving slightly. They feel dumb, but insane for your board feel. Thanks as ever for watching and I'm glad the mental bit is positive (i think it is for me overall too).
Skateboarding is the only thing I’ve done that can quiet my brain and skating on Fridays after work definitely stops a stressful work week affecting my weekend. Even though I’m still a beginner and knows like 2 tricks, I still enjoy all of it! It’s about putting focus on yourself (and like you say, not die). Would love a long sleeve if you are considering adding new products in the future. Great vids and nose stall fakie shuv 🤌
I love that the skill level is irrelevant. Beginners like us or veterans like (insert your favourite) all focused in the moment. I can always add a new product… long sleeves for the winter would be a good idea.
