Placing this phenomenon in its historical context is the key to understanding what’s really going on. Superb work.

This was so difficult to watch, but I watched it because I want to be part of the conversation. Can't talk about this if we don't do the hard part. I'm so grateful to you for your work, Mia, and thank you for coming to such a widely regarded institution for your presentation.

One of the most enlightening presentations on the subject I’ve heard. I appreciate learning about the historical patterns in social contagions. I would be curious to see the data on kids who are radically limited to social media and trans presenting rates. Although I imagine there are other characteristics for kids like that which would influence their perceptions of self. It’s no surprise that at the intersection of mental health crisis spikes, social media saturation and woke culture of affirmation in education and the medical industry, we’d see an epidemic like this

The $ for the industry, $ for the men in sports and advertising etc, the employment opportunities for women govs and companies is helping to prolong this. All of this done without any scrutiny.

TLDR:This video is interesting and i like the presentation. It is insightful and applies to the present context of the current societies mental health environment, especially in the west.
Personal notes: It is fascinating watching a lecture and seeing the correlations between the past into the present and realizing that we are not so different from that era.
[American] Social media in the past and present (its inception towards today) has repeated a trend in which people, mostly children-teens, shared a certain mental illness which would bond them into small communities based around their niche traits. These
I recall seeing depression become a frequent trend whenever a character in entertainment exhibited those emotions, Characters such as Bojack horsemen or tony soprano. A sentiment was shared which created a prominent group of "lonely men". There were such cases in women as well, identifying with characters with characters like jinx, using these examples as "notes" to copy into their own "persona".
Occasionally, these cases would result in a cycle where participants stopped identifying with their specific character "hyper fixation" and moved on to their next idol, but there is also the rare cases where they remain obsessed for a very long time. Examples of this include internet personalities such as "chris chan," an "internet lol cow" who identified and fantasized about a fictional video game series, Sonic the hedge hog, for most of his life. This led to many outburst online and result in chris chan "transitioning" into a women and s.a his demented mother. This is the most extreme case document willingly (online youtube channel created by chris chan himself and many public documents concerning his arrest) but it is something to consider when we regard this issue.
It is concerning how popular this becomes and should heed as a warning for parents that neglect their children's social health, because isolation is a root cause of this problem.

Excellent talk, but the audio and the interruptions of much louder microphones is a problem.

Inarguable on Brain MRI: past childhood abuse & dissociation

Dissociation is inarguable on brain MRI?

    • @psyskeptic9979

That is very arguable. Dissociation is vague and unscientific concept. Indeed in this very video, CHarcot and Freud's pseudoscience is discussed (related to Janet's concept of dissociation). A correlation between an fMRI scan and a measure of dissociation is precisely that--a correlation, and a messy and very interpretable one as well. (interpretable by confirmation bias because there are so many correlates to choose from)
