One of the best disco songs ever, it's impossible not to dance. ABBA's disco is the best disco, no one does it like them. I love the video too, I like the colors and it looks like they're having fun! I read they actually went to a real club and got drunk and danced and they just filmed it! I think the song is called Summer Night City because here in Sweden during the summer the sun never really goes down, or it does but only for a short time then it gets bright again. By the way, it's Agnetha's 72nd birthday today!
This video is probably one of my favorite ABBA videos ever, no I think it is my favorite video ever by them, and it's also my favorite hair on Frida.. it just looks so awesome wild, untamed and red!
The song is a tribute to the bands hometown of Stockholm, Sweden. Where the sun never sets for like 2 months during summer time. They look genuinely happy in this video cause i think they are filmed a little bit Tipsy here, they really are dancing in the club not single rehearsed choreo here hehe. This is their last number one song in their home country of Sweden, they will never get to the top spot of the Swedish national chart until last years don't shut me down shoot to the summit. Also notice how sweet the 2 couples are in this video.. Frida and Benny, Aggy and Bjorn.
7:15 _"Seems so genuinely happy"_ Sure, they were partying and dancing for real that summer night in 1978. Director Lasse Hallström had this idea to make a promotion film (video) this way. Showing Stockholm as a "Summer night city", when days are almost 24 hours long.
In my top 5 abba Songs. There are some instrumental overlays they perfectioned on Lay All Your Love On Me… „feeling in the air, my kind of people everywhere“ in the background it’s that hypnotic hymnic synths riff… I think it’s their most sensual sexy track. Hot and best video…. There is a full length version with the slow intro released some 16 years later on a compilation. The 1979 live is wicked and so is the 1981 dick cavett live performance. Highly recommended: all abba tracks left 😉
everyone is in love with Agnetha hehe. I feel sorry for Frida, she’s under-appreciated & had so much tragedy in her life but she’s finally found happiness. She suffered from depression so I can relate. ABBA are the greatest.
The director, Lase Hallström, has said that it was shot on a real night out, and that everybody got a bit pissed and had loads of fun. It seems genuine because it more or less was. I really love the clips with Frida and Benny walking, the look really pissed and a lot of fun.
I had bought their More Abba gold on video the first time I saw this. Fell in love with the video and the song, even though I had heard it many times before (from their GHv2 album. Also, can't quite figure out how Rock Me made it onto that album. It was their only pre-Arrival song on the album. It was a fairly unknown Abba song--hitting only in Australia and should have been on vol. 1). Anyway, back to SNC: I also love those scenes on the boat, Marissa, with the girls hair cascading in the wind and looking care-free and fancy free. This was their very last #1 in Sweden. They evidently weren't as popular in their home cpuntry as one might think. Btw, Tyler, I have that very same Old Navy shirt. Keep em coming guys. By that, I mean the Abba. I'm sure you got some other good reaction videos, but I only watch the Abba--Second To NONE!!
Fun review, thanks. This is a really interesting song of ABBA's The clip was as usual directed by Lasse Hallström and was reportedly filmed during a night out of ABBA's in Stockholm - so to catch the party vibe of Stockholm in Summer. Probably why they look so genuinely happy and are just having a good time. The song itself was a long and difficult process with B and B never completely happy with it Agnetha also felt it just didn't sound like ABBA. It had mixed success: top ten in many countries, number 1 in a few (like Sweden), a non- performer elsewhere (like US). Have you guys reviewed As Good As New ( number 1 in Mexico and other Latin American countries - and a hit in Japan)? Also If It Wasn't For the Nights ... was to be a single before other songs took precedence on that album. Still think it would have done well in North American market.
Hi guys... Thanks again for another ABBA video review 💥🤗 Oh Marissa you think that Benny is shy and doesn't want to be there 🤔😂😂😂he is the genius of the keyboard and the main Contributor to the great musicality of Abba while Bjorn is the Lyricists. I know that in their promo videos Benny looks very chilled and relaxed but believe me when I say that he has a very different persona when appearing live on stage, I got to see ABBA live in 1979 in London at Wembley Arena and he was like some kid on a sugar high and so was Bjorn. 😍😆 You have to watch their live performances from the London /Australian concerts on you tube then you will understand what I'm talking about.💥😛 You guys take care stay safe, look forward to your next video reactions💕 💖🇬🇧😷
Maybe the best disco song ever made...only Begees can possibly really compete in disco tunes with this song..its soooo good...its happy, great vocals, great melody...loooooooooooove it..Its for sure their best music video....its just pours out greatness of all kind, and alot of happiness..love it.
My favourite Abba single - with The Name of the Game a close second - they have stood the test of time - brilliantly composed and great blending of voices - I can see the disco connection , but when done live Summer night city takes on a heavier, rockier feeling. Should have been a much bigger hit.
I was lucky enough to be at one of the live shows at Wembley. This song opened the second half of the show and as many comment below it started with a really slowed down intro. The audience at first didnt recognise the song and then about 30 seconds or more in there was a collective 'light bulb' moment throughout the audience and we started clapping. When the main beat kicks in on the live performance it goes nuts. Slightly quicker than this and all four rock it, especially the girls
There is a longer version of this song with an extra intro. The intro was dropped to have the song start with a 'bang'. The full version was eventually released on a compilation album.
This song had almost 50 takes in the studio during the recording sessions. They were never absolutetly happy with it no matter how much hours/days of hard work it took them. The original version had a magical slow intro that led to the bursting opening part that was released. The fabulous unedited version was finally out in the '90s and you gotta check it.
Really love that slow intro the first time I heard it years later. Was a bit puzzled by it at first though, until the big "burst". That moment is like a rush of adrenaline!
Yeah that version with the slower intro is available on the "Thank You For The Music" box set that came out in 1994.. I saved for months to get it I was so excited when I finally did and I wore those four CDs out, and also the track and the fourth CD 'ABBA Undeleted"when's the first time we heard the original clip of "Just A Notion "as well and that instantly became one of my favorite ABBA songs ever and I was over the moon when I knew it was going to be on "Voyage"!
Symphonic metal band Therion did a cover to this. The real bomb though is the original unedited version with the beautiful slow intro both music and the etherial girls' singing part.A fan made video is available in the net with this extended version. They shouldn't have "butchered" it's epic opening. The ultimate live performance though does justice to it.
A little trivia about this song, upon its release in the last quarter of 1978, it is the first and last time both couples were married during ABBAs career! Frida and Benny only tied the knot before the release of summer night city after 8 years of living together, on the other hand Agnetha and Bjorn will announce their separation shortly before 1978 ends after 7 years of marriage. It's quite sad cause we can bjorn and aggy walking hand in hand by the Stockholm sea and so in love in this clip
This song is so good, and I was very surprised when I learned that the guys were never happy how it turned out. You should check the live version from Dick Cavett show 1981 with the slow intro, or from Wembley arena with intro and the huge ending. It is so beautiful and adds so much to the song. Totally worth another reaction.
Swedish summers are amazing. It feels like the sun will never set, and way up north it actually doesn't. Still even in the southern parts of Sweden the sun sets really late, and rises super early, with lots of twilight in between and a very short time of "real" darkness.
Actually I don't think you guys have watched and listened to Voulez-Vous by ABBA yet. You'll definitely love the energetic vibe of that one if you loved this one and Gimme Gimme Gimme so much! Soz for the third comment, it just had to be said!
Despite my having a soft spot for Agnetha from my childhood i admit that here it's Frida whose beauty and sexyness is mind-blowing.This lady is a seductive little bomb.I also lover her fashionable American-styled 1978 perm hair and her whole attitude.
@Lex Well Frida has also a very loyal and eclectic following audience.Besides can't imaging any other female singer that could tie in such a magical way with Agnetha both vocally and visually.Their chemistry was out of this word.
@Lex Agree. And Anni-Frid loved touring and was very confident and versatile on stage and also very supportive to her "little sister".They were such foxies!lol.
GOTC btw is a very difficult song to perform live!Demands a lot of energy and concetration so to click perfectly both voices in unison with so many quick changes in "highs and lows" while performing it.But they both "smashed" it!
@LexHi Lex Last but not least, their live performance from "The Movie" on this rather "demanding" rock track(Get on the carousel) also looked quite effortless and sounded flawless!
You guys are so musical, I really thought you would've noticed this: The Visitors song uses The melody of Summer Night City, Benny and Bjorn whew not happy with it and tried many different arrangements for the song, and the record company were banging on the door saying they have to release something soon. So I think The Visitors is Benny & Bjorn fixing that. In Summer Night City it's the line "walking in the moonlight, lovemaking in the dark," To The Visitors: "Now I hear them moving, muffled noises..." Agnetha found Summer Night City a bit repetitive, and critics thought it was just a calculated pastiche of the Bee Gees. The live version from Wembley really lets the song breathe.
Some random thoughts from me. a) I don't know if it's deliberate or not, but you two are always colour co-ordinated. b) Marissa is getting better and better at the one liners and the sideways glances. c) I agree with Marissa about Benny. He just doesn't want to be there, doesn't want to perform and just can't be bothered with it t all. d) Summer Night City sounds upbeat but as always there's a sting in the tail. "It's elusive call it glitter; Somehow something turns me on; Some folks only see the litter; We don't miss them when they're gone." A swipe at the critics perhaps? e) Apocryphally, he BBC refused to play SNS because they thought the word 'walking' was actually the present participle of the F word. Good vid as always M and T.
I reccomend going for one of their more soul filled ones with moving lyrics and sound next. Try "Move On" or "I let the music speak" Or "thank you for the music" by ABBA. They are all different styles from those you have heard so far, less bop and more soul.
Oh god ! Please 🙏🏻 not TFTM. So saccharine, such a non-performer chart-wise. Just bizarre that this lazy and naff song has become a cult favourite amongst the minority hard-core ABBA fans.
@@MarkJohnson-dr4ws ahaha plenty of people feel it's soulful and meaningful and love the melody. But fair enough that it's not to your taste being a paired back song and similar to a musical number.
@@MarkJohnson-dr4ws "Thank you for the music" (1977) is the first ABBA hymn British fans voted it in #4 between all ABBA songs (behind The winner takes it all, Dancing Queen & The day before you came) Benny said that is an underrated hit Agnetha did a fantastic performance as lead singer, with joy and emotion "Thank you for the music" is in my Top 5 of Agnetha as lead voice in ABBA, and in my Top 10 of all ABBA songs
@@MarkJohnson-dr4ws Yes, and neither did many of their best songs: Eagle (yeah, it charted in a few counties, but not nearly what it deserved), On and On and On, and The Visitors (which is grossly underrated in terms of the chart position). I'm not a big fan of TFTM either, but there are far many that are. It was Stig Anderson's favorite at the time. Saccharine, I agree, and it does have that "elevator music" vibe to it. But Agnetha's vocals are undeniably sweet and passionate (once again). Plus, like many Abba songs before and after, the chorus will get stuck on replay in your head-for better or for worse. I appreciate both of your perspectives. For me, I don't care care for "The King has lost His Crown", but many will request it on these sites. Yet I just don't see it, considering all the other brilliant, masterpieces I'd opt for instead.
If you're in the mood for another ABBA City-Vibe song, you should go for 'I Am The City', and you will go all out.. I promise! Keep up the good work; you both are so cute in discussing all of this together, a little light in these dark times, thank you! 😘
Allegedly the final line caused some problems because they thought Bjorn said FXCKXNG in the moonlight. If you listen to it really loud at the very end.. you might hear it.
It's actually "valking" that he's singing, with a shift of the "w" sound to a "v". I think they did it for a laugh, thinking that no-one would notice, but it seems some radio stations did, and so faded out the ending very quickly!
In my opinion I think Summer Night City is one of those amazing bops that not many Abba fans have heard about. I absolutely love this track and glad to see people reacting to this.
The live version of this song is 🔥 it’s a must see! Extended, disco rock vibes. Awesomeness. They themselves were never satisfied with the album version
There is a long version with a slower lead in and then 'boom' it start into the regular version! It sort of has more impact I feel, a bit like Kisses of Fire, almost makes you jump when it kicks off! Agree, a happy, sexy and sultry number very different for Abba.Didnt like it when it came out but love it now!
If you want 18 minutes of this song, you should _definitely_ check out the live version! SNC and NoTG are my two top Abba loves. I'll never tire of either of them. Those Swedish/Nordic nights where it hardly gets dark at all are really special. 🇸🇪🇳🇴
This song is soo good. Björn said in an interview, that they were never happy how the song turned out. The video was made while they were actually in club in Stockholm having fun. I highly recommend for you to react to live performance from their Wembley concert in 1979. So full of energy and both the intro and how they ended the song are just fantastic.
You guys! Love your review as always. I look forward every week to seeing what you will review next. A great follow-up review for this would be 'I am the city'.. Keep up the awesome work and laughs 😃
A music critic, I forget who, once said that ”ABBA is to disco what Ace Of Base is to reggae”. Which, apart from being gleefully harsh could not be more wrong. Not that ABBA was all about disco - it was but a brief period in their career, one album - but I’d like to know who did the genre better. If anything, it’s the other way around: Disco is to ABBA what Ace Of Base is to reggae. And as exhibit A, I’d refer to this song.
Hi can you both elaborate on for example chorus drops.. or drop 2 a lower register.. etc I’m guessing your musical training helps you hear things .. so if you discuss what you hear a bit more when you pause the song that would be awesome! 💕
😐 Agnetha did not like this song, because in her words, she said "it is not ABBA"........but Benny and Björn released it anyway. It only made it to Nº 5 in the U.K.....at at a time that was considered to be the height of their popularity, and that the Top 3 was more familiar territory for their formidable string of consecutive hit singles. I agree with Agnetha, and when I bought the single (imported), I actually played the "B side" more than "Summernight City". 😆 ♫♫♫♪♪♪♪♪
@German Morawski 🙂Oh......I did not know that. I must say that I do like "Summer Night City", when ABBA was at Wembley in November of 1979, and they did a version with a slow "intro", and I thought that was quite creative and interesting.
@@jamiew6438 Yes of course. It's Bjorn but kinda "sigh-ing out" while singing "walking" instead of the F word that is kinda "blury" heard in that part lol!Bjorn was a family man and arleady a father of 2 since Agnetha had given birth to his son at the time(S.Peter Christian) some months back.Besides ABBA would never write/sing such words cause they were always concsiously aware that also young lil fans were massively buying their recordsThey had an all family audience and a clean cut image.Let's not forget it was 1978 instead of today that's so much swearing in music.

The scenes from the boat in this video are everything! That and the club scenes, both of them are ABBA having genuine fun on a night out!
This is probably their most quintessential "disco" song. I always got a Bee Gees vibe from it. Great to dance to!
🤔 Hmmm I'd have thought Gimme Gimme Gimme.
It’s clearly inspired by the Bee Gees’ ‘Night Fever’, especially the music video

A swipe at the critics perhaps? e) Apocryphally, he BBC refused to play SNS because they thought the word 'walking' was actually the present participle of the F word. Good vid as always M and T.
if I remember, they weren’t entirely happy with this song even though it’s flipping brilliant!
@@MarkJohnson-dr4ws
"Thank you for the music" (1977)
is the first ABBA hymn
British fans voted it in #4 between all ABBA songs
(behind The winner takes it all, Dancing Queen &
The day before you came)
Benny said that is an underrated hit
Agnetha did a fantastic performance as lead singer, with joy and emotion
"Thank you for the music"
is in my Top 5 of Agnetha as lead voice in ABBA, and in my Top 10 of all ABBA songs
@@eduardooscar309 that's great ... but it still went absolutely nowhere when it was released as a single.
Try "If It Wasn't For the Nights." Very happy and upbeat song!
even more interesting with the extending cut
Still think you should react to „As Good As New“. One of my favourite ABBA songs.
Yes, ABBAs members ARE genuine in their expressions!
Thanks for share🙏🏻
Beautiful record ♥
Happiness is Abba. Just beautiful and different to anything else
Live version is awful! Too fast, too rock!
@@MarioDruet each to his own. To me it was majestic.
If you want to see more of their happy stuff, please react to the official video of Bang-A-Boomerang. 😃
Yes, that is also a very good song by ABBA! Thank you!
Benny sings lead on one of ABBA's more obscure songs: "Suzy Hang Around." True to form, the more upbeat music hides a darker lyric.
Wonderful song! SO good to dance to!
1 of these comments are so true, check them out on LIVE from Wembley 1979 !
Thanks, Marissa! Thanks, Tyler! 🌃 #TylerCreatesContent #TCCReacts #SummerNightCity #ABBA
Live version of this song is amazing
I agree, that transition in the verse is remarkable.
I could watch you react to Abba all day long ! Lol
The live version has a great synth intro.
If you liked this you will also like "TIGER " ...really cool video as well
my fave ABBA song! ♥
Please react to Agneta Fältskog/ solo career,and the song " to love",,it s AMAZING ! from 1983.
OMG I don’t even know what to recommend next! There’s so much! Try Lay All Your Love on Me!
They did that one recently :))
If you want 18 minutes of this song, you should _definitely_ check out the live version! SNC and NoTG are my two top Abba loves. I'll never tire of either of them. Those Swedish/Nordic nights where it hardly gets dark at all are really special. 🇸🇪🇳🇴
What a chorus!..so catchy Tyler your getting camper by every abba song 😓👌🤠
It reminds me of a summer night in the city.
This is rare Abba-song, where all sings equally. 👌 About their experimental suggested reactions The Piper or Soldiers.
Great track! Maybe try Hey Hey Helen? Old stuff and should have been a single.
You guys! Love your review as always. I look forward every week to seeing what you will review next.
A great follow-up review for this would be 'I am the city'..
Keep up the awesome work and laughs 😃
Summer night city ✨😎💙🤪💕abbasolutly ⭐
A music critic, I forget who, once said that ”ABBA is to disco what Ace Of Base is to reggae”. Which, apart from being gleefully harsh could not be more wrong. Not that ABBA was all about disco - it was but a brief period in their career, one album - but I’d like to know who did the genre better. If anything, it’s the other way around: Disco is to ABBA what Ace Of Base is to reggae. And as exhibit A, I’d refer to this song.
‘It’s like your going out on a summer night’.. 😉 😏 🚜 🧠
Love the choice of words
A good abba song that has Björn sing lead vocals to react to is “does your mother know”
They have already reacted to Does Your Mother Know. So I suggest "Rock Me". 😃
There is a long version with a slow start ÷ build up to the explosion of disco ✨🙌
Hi can you both elaborate on for example chorus drops.. or drop 2 a lower register.. etc I’m guessing your musical training helps you hear things .. so if you discuss what you hear a bit more when you pause the song that would be awesome! 💕
of course and dropping to a lower register basically means like when you can sing notes higher and lower (in this case, they chose to sing it lower)
I miss the 70s. ❤️🙏👍🌼🕺🌺
👍❤️
LOVE your ABBA reactions but can you raise the volume of the music > THANKS
Abbas first attempt at disco..before the voulez vous album.. and gimme....and.. lay all your love on me...🥳
Swear they sing 'Fucking in the moonlight ' on the fade out .
Many had misheard that part even then.
@@alexioverdo5225 It's Bjorn's voice.
@@alexioverdo5225 Thanks for explaining your opinion and reasoning behind it . It is a distinctive word and easy to decipher .
@@jamiew6438 Oh thanks for your kind reply too,Jamie.

Now is it " walking in the moon 🌙light or f-ing in the moonlight...?. A debate in uk for years ! ? Bjorn says walking. Buy frida always smirks 😏❤
