Love that you covered this. Schumacher was an incredible interesting filmmaker, I really hope Warner Bros throws down some cash to release this cut.
Bring on the Schumacher cut! 👍🏻😎 Batman Forever is my favourite batman film. I don't understand all the hate it gets. It has a good storyline, characters, and soundtrack. I'd love to see the Schumacher cut!
This takes me to my warm place. Thank You Heath & Brian!!
I would love to give this movie another watch with the work print.
An extended cut of Batman Forever is something I’d have to have on day one.
Same if WB ever releases a television cut of Superman II.
Thank you guys, very much enjoyed the talk!
Great discussion!
I could listen to you both talk about comic heroes all day every day
Good one. Loved Batman Forever a lot.
Love the Batman movie talk. I hope I get a chance to watch this cut someday. I would love to hear you guys talk about Dark Knight Rises based on Brian’s little tease there.
Fingers crossed this gets a proper release. It sounds like a much stronger film all round.
I personally want to see a Batman comic that stops relying on Frank Miller's Batman Year 1 and starts Batman like his Golden Age roots as a vigilante who kills bad guys but something like he learns he created Joker or the failure to get his revenge on Joe Chill due to him running into traffic in fear is the catalyst to him stop killing, but the villains of his Rogue's Gallery are living reminders of who he was, trying to push him back to his dark roots. Joker could be the biggest reminder, hence his obsession with Batman. Also the Batman Forever novelization I would highly recommend. Apparently it opens with Chase being saved from muggers by Richard Grayson before he's Robin.
Man! I hope the director’s cut of Batman Forever comes to 4k..heck! I’d take Max. I wanna see it as bad as I wanted to see ZSJL
That ‘VAL’ documentary was so good!
The track that is played during the giant bat scene is Adagio from Alien 3
I am not finding this cut (probably not great at internet research), but want to sometime.
It's going to be very hard to find, but I've seen some accounts pop up from time to time who share links, then they immediately disappear--probably because WB lawyers pounce on them.
Where would you advise to keep an eye for. Where this would be shares?
I've only ever seen the theatrical/DVD release of the Schumacher Bat films. Honestly, I love the campiness and fun. I think the modern DCU would do well to be fun for a while before returning to that ever popular/over popular grim and gritty Batman. Although I grew up on Adam West reruns so that primed me to want Batman to be fun.
The song during Robin's joyride is Carole Popes you can't go back
Only just learned of the cut from this. Really wish more workprints survived over the years, a lot of great ideas get washed away. I was bothered by how Two Face was just sidelined in the strangest way. I really liked the soundtrack (I don't remember the score, but the album of the pop songs was nice to have), that's sort of the slot I put this movie in, and I liked Kilmer all right, though I felt '89s Bruce was my favorite of that era because he seemed to inhabit both worlds with a bit of edge or discomfort. Made it interesting for me
Edit: On Gotham being big in the earlier series, I did have a bit of a vision of what my ideal Gotham might be like, and it's a bit mysterious and bigger than Batman can encompass. Like I see him as just acting until he's exhausted and then recovering and going at it again, like he doesn't have full control of everything, and that him standing out on a ledge looking down, he's still surrounded by towering moonlit structures trying to make sense of the chaos. That's me, though, I haven't read much of the comics so I don't know if that strays too far. At least as far as filmic adaptations, having Gotham feel a *bit* strange, even if that isn't as overt as the older films, makes it more fun to explore for me somehow
yes i like all four movies too
I really like Jim Carrey’s interpretation of the Riddler-I see the heavy influence of Frank Gorshin’s version of The Riddler from Batman’66.
I want to watch the work print so badly
Count me in as someone who would shell out for a release of the Schumacher cut of ‘Batman Forever,’ even if I apparently won’t like it because I’m older than you or Brian. I didn’t hate the theatrical version, but just felt there may be a better version in there.
And as Brian stated, I think releasing the Schumacher cut is the least WB can do for Joel. He made some good movies-and money-for them. (Some that continue to make money for them.) The least they could do is release the movie he originally envisioned! I think he’s owed that much.
BTW, a nice special feature would be a good retrospective of his life and career. And maybe somebody involved who could explain what happened between the time of his cut and what WB released. (If it’s not obvious, I was a Schumacher fan.)
I wonder if the novelization has some of the other stuff included. I bought a small lot of Batman novels from ebay once and Batman Forever was one of them. I haven't read it yet though.
Great chat fellas! I'm thinking of covering the Schumacher Cut on my channel but havnt seen the workprint, if you know where this can be viewed feel free to message me!
re: Val Kilmer - there is a documentary about the making of the Frankenheimer iteration of DR MOREAU, entitled 'Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley's Island of Dr. Moreau'; if you have not already seen it, it is definitely worth a look. It does go into Mr Kilmer and his problems with Mt Frankenheimer and other members of the cast. (Things become especially wild when Mr Brando arrives ... the doc would be worth it even if just this part was the focus.)
Bruce does say the movie title in the theatrical cut when he is in Chase’s office and he describes falling in the cave he says “I fell forever.”
Or as David Letterman called it, Batman Fever.
do you have the workprint?
BTW, if you want to see Val Kilmer at his best, watch Tombstone. But he's my favorite Bruce Wayne. It wouldve been phenomenal if we could see Val playing Bruce Wayne and Batman in a more serious light
I appreciate the last two as tribute to 60's Batman. Batman Returns is far the best. Nicholson wasn't Joker, he was just himself. BTW, Clooney is a better Bruce Wayne. Uma as Ivy was genius being Jayne Mansfield.
Cool how can we see it?
mind you
true Batman greatness can only be found
in comics animation and audio form
for me anyway
Brian loves the sound of his own voice.
i will
because Batman and Robin is great
I have seen the Val Kilmer Batman in the theater when it was released-I didn’t think this or Batman & Robin are super terrible. I take them for what they are.
I totally disagree on his points about Jack playing The Joker.
Yeah Jack was my first Joker and always will be the Joker in my mind
I almost got confused with the one with Ben Affleck
Whatever. I've never considered Batman Forever to be a bad movie. Yes, it's campy fun. But there's nothing definitively bad about campy. And I cant wait to see the Schumacher cut.
I love Jack Nicholson as The Joker. He was and is a superstar. You can recognize him a mile away. How is The Joker supposed to act? He's just as lethal, unpredictable and dangerous to me as Heath Ledger. Jack's Joker is just a lot more colorful.
And Jim Carrey is wonderful as The Riddler. I really believe that Carrey could've been phenomenal if Batman Forever was a darker and more serious film.
Joel made a big mistake by throwing Two Face in there as Two Face. He shouldve established Tommy Lee Jones as Harvey in this film and end the movie with him after the acid attack, becoming Two Face... for another movie
No, I have yet to see the film.
ohhhh lucky you
Putting down Jack in his years long after he retired. Stay classy!
People have been putting down Jack's performance in Batman for 35 years.
I've always enjoyed all the Batman movies. Loved the 60s Tv show in reruns as a kid and the animated series. Be very interested in this cut as well 🤙
I was 4 years old when Batman 1989 came out. It was my first exposure to Jack Nicholson and the Joker. So for me he will always be the Joker so your take just seems wrong to me
Opinions are never wrong-including yours.
nalan
snyder
and reeves DC movies
are good movies boring but good
Great conversation guys. I loved Batman Forever, it was the Batman movie I connected with the most. Joel was a great man and a great director. He was truly sorry that so many people didn't like Batman And Robin. He said to me that people blamed him for "ruining Batman". It was not good but my god, as you guys pointed out, look at all the great films he made! Now I'm jonesing to see the work print. 😁
Thanks guys!
