I do want to humor the idea that every instance of him seemingly being contradictory is just him making shit up, trying something new, seems within his abilities
*Mr. Myxzptlk* never appeared in the *New 52* continuity. He appears in *Rebirth* complaining about this. He's the very reason the souls of the New 52 Superman & Lois fuse with their post-crisis counterparts.
I remember a Silver Age book where Superman goes to the Fifth Dimension, and harasses Myxy for awhile. He keeps messing up Myxy's attempts to make him say "Namrepus," until the end when Myxy succeeds and... nothing happens. At the end, Superman says he'll go back on his own and whispers something, dissappearing. Back in HIS world. He muses that Myxy never realized that his name ISN'T "Superman," but "Kal-El," so he had to say "Lelak!"
I just like the comic where Calendar Man gets Mxy's powers and starts seeing things fifth dimensionally and that all of reality is organized into little boxes.
Obviously the voice I think of for Mxy is Gilbert Gottfried and ya know what props to Timothy Banfield for a pretty stellar Gottfried/Mxy impression. Now I've gotta go find that McGurk!
I found funny how in World's Funniest every Superman Mxy and Bat-Mite met already knew who Mxy was but none of the Batman knew who Bat-Mite was except for the Silver Age version. Tells a lot about how different Batman is from Superman.
I like the idea that Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow is the definitive ending for Mxyzptlk since in that story, he references how he was a trickster for two thousand years and now he’s moving on to being pure evil, which to me makes sense only taking place after every other version of Mxy. Maybe the My Adventures with Superman version is one that’s nearing the end of the Mxy timeline as he’s starting to pivot from being a trickster to being evil

Although it's an interesting idea there's a story that contradicts this, DC Comics presents 97 "Superman and the Phantom Zone Criminals: The Final Chapter", it was the last canonical earth one story featuring Mxy ("whatever happened to the man of tomorrow" takes place in earth 423, which is similar to earth one but with differences), in said story Mxy shows his evil side by destroying Bizarro World and Argo City (he even makes fun of the fact that by that time supergirl was dead by saying that he remembers superman used to have relatives in Argo). The story ends with Mxy taking the freed phantom zone criminals as prisioners (absorbing them) and torturing them, before leaving he tells to the earth one superman that this is the last time he will see him, implying Mxy knows the effects of the Crisis will cause the earth one superman to cease to exist. My personal theory is that Mxy is simply bipolar.
I believe the fact that he dies (or seems to) in that particular story doesn't mean he dies in the 5th dimension, as confusing as this may sound. The reasoning being that the 5th dimension is made of ideas and those can't be killed

I like to think Mxy spent most of his time leading up to My Adventures watching anime and just decided to go on a demon lord run for a bit of a change of pace.

According to Young Justice (1998), he used to be a good-hearted college student before Superboy (Kon-el), Impulse (Bart Allen), and Robin (Tim Drake) all accidentally convinced him to become a supervillain in his future. Nice job breaking it, young heroes!
I mean, if I remember correctly, he would go down the supervillain path with or without YJ. They did, however, try to make him decide *not* to become a trickster, if only briefly, which ended the world, so they had to convince him of the wonders of comedy to fix their timeline. They didn’t accidentally convince him to be a supervillain, they did it on purpose, for the sake of the world.
The name issue has a simple solution: it's a translation thing. After all, it has been established that all 5th dimension beings have names that can't be represented in our world, so we get an automatic translation into something we can work with. This is the same deal as with transliteration of foreign alphabets, sometimes there are different competing systems. On that note, who is in charge of doing this translation? Is it the same being each time?

My theory is that Whatever Happened is the end of his timeline. He seems to get worse after being punished, doesn’t he? So, his worst self could be at the end of it all. After the My Adventures stuff, he’s already pretty bad. That leads into his genocide of his people. Then, he has supreme access. With supreme access, he goes on a temper tantrum. As an imp, he’s not accessing the multiverse as it is. He can access it from any point. Whatever Happened isn’t a version of a revived Earth-1 from later that the modern Mxy goes into, he’s a Mxy from the modern era that’s able to enter the Pre-Crisis Earth-1. Pre-Crisis Earth-1, being the center of the multiverse at the time, allows him to fundamentally alter the structure of the multiverse from the core. He’s Doomday Clocking this. So, he drives Superman to kill and retire. This becomes a fundamental core part of the multiverse now. He just wasn’t planning to drive Superman to kill *him* like that. Because of that, he never gets to reap the rewards. Problem with his entire plan is that he doesn’t realize it’s all a predestined action. The universes he’s been interacting with for centuries wouldn’t exist if his future, now present, self didn’t do this. They’d be different. He’s a predestination paradox of fate that only works because he’s from the fifth dimension.
@@Saiyanking72 Yeah, I've been thinking about the similarities between The Killing Joke and Whatever Happened a lot lately, and there's one thing people forget about TKJ. It was never supposed to be post-Crisis canon. It sold so well that it was made into post-Crisis canon, but Batman has a framed picture of the Silver Age Batwoman and Batgirl. They never existed post-Crisis. Which means The Killing Joke is the final Earth-1 Batman story. Which means that it is a twin of Whatever Happened, the final Earth-1 Superman story. And suddenly the villains of each come into view as each other's mirrors. Mxy explicitly calls Superman out on thinking of him as some mere clown, just some harmless thing, when he is a god by the standards of the third dimensions. A being who wears the face of a clown but is so much worse than that torturing and slaughtering the hero's friends and destroying his legacy to break him? There's no way Moore does that twice for the World's Finest within a couple years without seeing what he's done. But then, consider the difference in scale. And importantly: Mxy finds The Joker interesting. So interesting that later on in publishing timeline, Mxy empowered him. It was supposed to be 1% but instead Joker got 99% and it was a whole thing. But that means that out of every single villain Mxy has watched, one caught his eye more than any other. One is more entertaining than any other. The Joker. Future Mxy didn't just seek to Doomsday Clock Superman into being inherently doomed, he did it with a stolen plan. Because, like The Joker, he's no mere clown. He is a force of nature, a being of chaos and mirth and cruelty and whimsy and _fandom_ like no other. The Joker is Batman's biggest fan, not Bat-Mite. Bat-Mite might love him, but he doesn't understand him. Mxy is Clark's Joker, he just has been in the Silver Age for much, much, much longer. When Mxy breaks, when he finally falls and goes from a mere jester of japes and giggles who does somewhat malicious acts for the lulz to a true malevolent force, what do you expect to be left? Something not dissimilar to the Clown Prince of Crime. Something that doesn't just want to hurt Clark, he wants to ontologically refute Clark's existence. Mxy becomes Toxic Fandom embodied.
As interesting as this is it kind of falls apart with his stays away for 90 days bit. He can't jump to any universe at any point, otherwise he could come back to the point right after he is forced to leave. He is somehow incapable of entering certain universes at certain points in time.
@@Project_Worm maybe 5th dimension time works differently depending on which 3rd dimension one is interacting with. For example we all know how dog and cat years are shorter than to our human years, despite we are all on the same 365 day cycling, and take snakes and turtle, I would presume their years are longer than us humans, since they can live centuries longer. So it could be theorized that the reason he doesn't immediately reenter after a certain 90 day whatever, might have to do with that, and also he might also get bored and just decided to go to another dimension completely forgeting about the previous (more or less) because of this, for example if you had two vinyl records playing in different parts of the house one taking an hour and another taking a minute, you're going to forget to check the hour one because you're busy checking the minutes one and making sure it keeps playing, so you only remember the hour long one, once and a while.

But the thing is, if he is the same being across all appearances (which seems to be the case), then he does often go back to the same universe to try again. So if he can go back at any point, then it doesn't matter if he's forgotten about messing with Superman A) for a hundred relative years, once he remembers "oh yeah, let's go mess with him again", if he could go back to any point, why does he always choose at least 90 days after his last appearance? He seems to at least on some level make the decision to stay away from the last time he was around.
I had assumed that when Mxy prepared to enter the My Adventures universe, he looked at different anime and manga to figure out what would be the oddest look for him to use, went with Dragon Ball, then rolled with it. Because outside of a few things he's been in, he has always looked odd or crazy. So him looking the way he did in My Adventures just fits.
Mxyzptlk is quite possibly my favourite Superman villain, easily top 3, such a fun silly interesting concept of having Superman fighting a magic imp that ends up having such wild far reaching consequences, I LOVE how he works, and his characterization is always so fun to me!
Also interesting to note he's essentially Superman's Superman. A being from another planet with powers far beyond his comprehension, and unlike his traditional powerful enemies who he can still brawl with, Supes has only his wits to help him and will use his strength in tandem to trick Mxy.
I like to think the Mxyzptlk we see in every DC work is the same being but under different appearances, being the evil one that appears and dies in the "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" imaginary tale his last chronological appearance

Having grown up with Gilbert Gottfried, I'd have to pick him since his voice is just that iconic. It's a shame we couldn't see him play him in live action.
I do really enjoy Howie Mandel and his werid almost genie like performance, and Gilbert Godfrey is just absolutely iconic. But my favorite is Trent Ford from smallville purely because of my headcanon that this is Mr Mxyzptlk, taking the form of a character in a teen drama and not doing as much crazy stuff because he knows how low the budget is
A random bit of coincidental trivia I've discovered is that in 'Whatever Happened,' Mr. Mxyztplk's true form, which was like an electric pink fifth-dimensional energy creature, kinda resembles Johnny Thunder's Thunderbolt, which was also confirmed as a fifth-dimensional being.
Honestly Gilbert Gottfried is like THE voice for Mr. Mxyzptlk. The character himself perfectly captures the whole "wise-guy who knows all and sees all and like to mess around in the narrative and can yoink himself from it anytime he wishes, or some joe-shmoe gets him to say his name backwards." type guy. It's like how Joker is usually seen with Mark Hamil's voice, or Kevin Conroy's Batman. Their performances really defined the characters for us and nostalgia or not. Their voices just "sound" right.
A potential timeline based on Mr Mxy’s perspective (including lore not included in this video): -Mr Mxy finds the book of Mxyztplkology as a kid -He uses the book to mess with a young Clark Kent -Mr Mxy’s father had to deal with his son once, informs Superboy (Clark) that to send Mr Mxy back then Mr Mxy needs to say his name backwards (implying that the name backwards rule is made up but it’s origins come from a rule his parent(s) made Mr Mxy follow when he was younger) -Mr Mxy grows up whilst mastering his magic abilities, even landed himself a role close to the king and fell in love with princess Ms. Gsptlsnz -The king unfortunately dies when another imp that was jealous of how close Mr Mxy has gotten to the king tried to kill Mr Mxy -Mr Mxy then begins interacting with the Superman more often (wouldn’t be a surprise if he messed with multiple supermen at once so that he doesn’t have to wait three months or so to mess with any superman) -During his interactions he learns of the benefits of lying, learned of Superman’s secret identity, and has children with Ms. Gsptlsnz (if they hadn’t already have a child prior) -Eventually the 5th dimension tribunal punishes Mr Mxy for his crimes against the 3rd dimension, during said punishment he loses and then regains his magical hat -After that it is possible that Mr Mxy killed the tribunal, becoming the soul ruler of the 5th dimension -Some time after finishing his punishment, Mr Mxy pivots from prankster to full villain -His life ends when his body gets torn in two

@@RodrigoGarcia-ze5em I am no DC or Mr. Mxy expert so thank you for telling me about this story, the story could theoretically be placed around the time Mxy pivots from trickster to full on malicious villain if someone is trying to fit all Mr Mxy appearances into one timeline. As for Bipolar Mxy, anything is possible with his lore, he could have bipolar, he could be bipolar coded, it could be possible that what we view as bipolar is neurotypical behaviour for 5th dimension beings, or some other lore explanation that explains Mxy’s bipolar behaviour.
-lives in a world where his previous race or people were wiped out by some giant force that no longer exists. -starts off goofing around with time travel books. -gets caught but only put restrictions on him(the backwards name thing might be general rules) -they don't know he found a magical hat. -after messing with the third d he realizes it actually changes his slightly. -meets superman, but he is young and its an evil comic version. -superman shows the ability to enter their realm -thinks superman is the bad guy of legend -spends countless times "messing" with superman to provoke him in front of the council --backfires. the council tries him for crimes -an evil superman does show up and destroy things -he escapes due to the hat and now hates superman -only one of his kind left eventually we gotta make it so he's accidentally responsible for superman showing up/or reveal the council are actually the bad guys or both
One conclusion I make for this character is can there actually be anything that makes it not true? Even if mxy came out himself and said nope I was just kidding it’s not the same me in every appearance, then we could just say he was lying and keep the theory going. If there’s any inconsistencies we can just say oh that’s just mxy being mxy. He is literally immune to continuity errors of any kind. And I kinda love that
Very good, very thorough. I think there was a final issue of DC Comics Presents around the same time as Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow that also suggested Mr. Mxysptlk was a "cute disguise" for a more terrible monster. And another Byrne issue implying he was also The Beyonder, the alien interferer who triggered Secret Wars II.
My headcannon is that some (but not all) of the contradictions can be explained by were seeing things in a different order than how they happened to Mxy.
To explain away how Mxy can be super evil like in MAWS and then apologetic in the Arrowverse, maybe they're him at different points in time. In MAWS, for example, Mxy's appearance in that show could be when he's still in his prime of being a chaotic god of the multiverse, despite the show itself coming out way after Supergirl finished.
The concept of multiverse singularity characters is both fun and frustrating to me. I like it in instances like Marvel’s Celestials but not when Mojo says that he’s the only one. Mojo doesn’t have the same excuse that Mxyzptlk or the Celestials do

I have to agree with most of everyone else. When I hear Mytz’s voice in the comics it is ALWAYS Gillby’s voice that I hear in my head. His voice is just so perfect for him! ( although I would love to see Danny Devito’s interpretation 😂)
Honestly I really liked David Errigo Jr.'s voice for them in MAWS a lot. Gottfried's voice for him is goated obv but I love the energy Errigo's voice has.

I gotta say, you wove the Gonzo bit throughout the video masterfully. On the note of the question of the day, the only answer I could give is Gilbert. His voice perfectly incapsulates Mxy by itself. I also feel like the best route to take Mxy in live action is a Who Framed Roger Rabbit style mix of live action and animation. It just feels like the type of way he'd present himself.
Man all those references in the little armory scene with Mixy. Gut's sword, The skyhook from Bioshock Infinite, The scissors from Clocktower, The Wabbajack from Skyrim, Lament puzzle box from Hellraiser, Princess Monoke bow?, Nero's sword from Devil May Cry, The laser gun from Akira, The Noisy Cricket from Men in Black, Shuriken from Naruto, Cervante's Gunblade from Soul Caliber and the pepper grinder gun from American McGee's Alice. So much crammed into a little 3 second scene.

This is a fantastic video, and it’s also responsible for me realizing that I apparently pronounce Mxyzptlk the way I do specifically because of Superfriends episodes that I have no memory of watching
Gilbert without question. Hes got such a unique and distinct voice that sounds impish and playful but also can slide into the nefarious and maybe even a bit evil end of things without missing a beat. Gilbert was fantastic and brought a certain gravitas to the role and to many others he inhabited.

I just had a terrifying thought: Myxyzptlk meeting Deadpool. They’d either turn whatever poor unfortunate universe they’re in into a Looney Tunes cartoon, hate each other’s guts, or both.
*An important thing to remember about that "no killing" rule:* The 5th dimension is beyond time, so their perception of "kill" would be very different from ours. You have to think of things happening all-at-once. A temporary death doesn't count because even as it's happening, 5th dimensional beings are already aware it'll be reversed.
I have to believe the “hat is the source of my power” is some sort of curse the lawmakers put on him. Like, if there were a timeline, after the hat rule is undone is when Mxy takes over the 5th Dimension circa Super Friends. I also have to assume for Mxy time isn’t linear, like Doctor Manhattan’s version of time.
Well the original Young Justice comic issue 3 confirmed that Mxy's timeline does not flow the same as the 3rd dimension as it has a very young version of himself that they have to convince to become a prankster.
@@kagato3 Well, of course it doesn't! Time is the 4th dimension, and Mxy is from a dimension beyond that. Naturally, time isn't linear unless they want it to be (although it may be the default mode as they perceive it), just as I choose whether or not I want to stack a bunch of 2D sheets of paper into a 3D pile.
@@Compucles time is not necessarily the 4th dimension. It is a dimension but it isn't always treated as the 4th. A 5th dimensional being could still be bound by our concept of time just have access to 2 other spatial dimensions.
I have watched his DCAU appearances the most. Gilbert was such an iconic voice actor it is hard to top that version. Plus I am a fan of his tiny purple suit.

DCAU’s been so influential on how I read DC comics that Gilbert Gottfried is the voice I imagine when I read his lines, particularly in Emperor Joker, so I would say he’s definitely my favorite of all the actors and personifies Mxyzptlk the best. Plus it was great how he broke down the pronunciation of it in his premiere STAS ep and is the pronunciation I stick by.
Great video. 1 Mxy being every Mxy is honestly one of my favorite retcons. My favorite Mxzy has to be Gilbert Gottfried. Loud, rambunctious, and funny. He really embodied Mxy with 1 voice

I’m seriously thrilled to see that this theory pans out, it’s been one of the favorite concepts in fiction ever since they took this trait away from Darkseid in the New 52. Honestly it’s even funnier that, of all the beings in DC’s long history, it’s the purple leprechaun rip-off that gets to be the multiversal constant.

He keeps messing up Myxy's attempts to make him say "Namrepus," until the end when Myxy succeeds and... nothing happens. At the end, Superman says he'll go back on his own and whispers something, dissappearing. Back in HIS world. He muses that Myxy never realized that his name ISN'T "Superman," but "Kal-El," so he had to say "Lelak!"

I found funny how in World's Funniest every Superman Mxy and Bat-Mite met already knew who Mxy was but none of the Batman knew who Bat-Mite was except for the Silver Age version.

I like the idea that Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow is the definitive ending for Mxyzptlk since in that story, he references how he was a trickster for two thousand years and now he’s moving on to being pure evil, which to me makes sense only taking place after every other version of Mxy. Maybe the My Adventures with Superman version is one that’s nearing the end of the Mxy timeline as he’s starting to pivot from being a trickster to being evil
Also makes sense because Mxy straight up dies in that conic. Superman finally kills him.

Although it's an interesting idea there's a story that contradicts this, DC Comics presents 97 "Superman and the Phantom Zone Criminals: The Final Chapter", it was the last canonical earth one story featuring Mxy ("whatever happened to the man of tomorrow" takes place in earth 423, which is similar to earth one but with differences), in said story Mxy shows his evil side by destroying Bizarro World and Argo City (he even makes fun of the fact that by that time supergirl was dead by saying that he remembers superman used to have relatives in Argo). The story ends with Mxy taking the freed phantom zone criminals as prisioners (absorbing them) and torturing them, before leaving he tells to the earth one superman that this is the last time he will see him, implying Mxy knows the effects of the Crisis will cause the earth one superman to cease to exist. My personal theory is that Mxy is simply bipolar.

I mean, if I remember correctly, he would go down the supervillain path with or without YJ. They did, however, try to make him decide *not* to become a trickster, if only briefly, which ended the world, so they had to convince him of the wonders of comedy to fix their timeline. They didn’t accidentally convince him to be a supervillain, they did it on purpose, for the sake of the world.
The name issue has a simple solution: it's a translation thing. After all, it has been established that all 5th dimension beings have names that can't be represented in our world, so we get an automatic translation into something we can work with. This is the same deal as with transliteration of foreign alphabets, sometimes there are different competing systems. On that note, who is in charge of doing this translation? Is it the same being each time?

My theory is that Whatever Happened is the end of his timeline. He seems to get worse after being punished, doesn’t he? So, his worst self could be at the end of it all. After the My Adventures stuff, he’s already pretty bad. That leads into his genocide of his people. Then, he has supreme access. With supreme access, he goes on a temper tantrum. As an imp, he’s not accessing the multiverse as it is. He can access it from any point. Whatever Happened isn’t a version of a revived Earth-1 from later that the modern Mxy goes into, he’s a Mxy from the modern era that’s able to enter the Pre-Crisis Earth-1. Pre-Crisis Earth-1, being the center of the multiverse at the time, allows him to fundamentally alter the structure of the multiverse from the core. He’s Doomday Clocking this. So, he drives Superman to kill and retire. This becomes a fundamental core part of the multiverse now. He just wasn’t planning to drive Superman to kill *him* like that. Because of that, he never gets to reap the rewards. Problem with his entire plan is that he doesn’t realize it’s all a predestined action. The universes he’s been interacting with for centuries wouldn’t exist if his future, now present, self didn’t do this. They’d be different. He’s a predestination paradox of fate that only works because he’s from the fifth dimension.
Annnnd now that’s my official headcanon to make it all make sense
@@Saiyanking72 Yeah, I've been thinking about the similarities between The Killing Joke and Whatever Happened a lot lately, and there's one thing people forget about TKJ. It was never supposed to be post-Crisis canon. It sold so well that it was made into post-Crisis canon, but Batman has a framed picture of the Silver Age Batwoman and Batgirl. They never existed post-Crisis.
Which means The Killing Joke is the final Earth-1 Batman story. Which means that it is a twin of Whatever Happened, the final Earth-1 Superman story. And suddenly the villains of each come into view as each other's mirrors. Mxy explicitly calls Superman out on thinking of him as some mere clown, just some harmless thing, when he is a god by the standards of the third dimensions.
A being who wears the face of a clown but is so much worse than that torturing and slaughtering the hero's friends and destroying his legacy to break him? There's no way Moore does that twice for the World's Finest within a couple years without seeing what he's done.
But then, consider the difference in scale. And importantly: Mxy finds The Joker interesting. So interesting that later on in publishing timeline, Mxy empowered him. It was supposed to be 1% but instead Joker got 99% and it was a whole thing. But that means that out of every single villain Mxy has watched, one caught his eye more than any other. One is more entertaining than any other. The Joker.
Future Mxy didn't just seek to Doomsday Clock Superman into being inherently doomed, he did it with a stolen plan. Because, like The Joker, he's no mere clown. He is a force of nature, a being of chaos and mirth and cruelty and whimsy and _fandom_ like no other. The Joker is Batman's biggest fan, not Bat-Mite. Bat-Mite might love him, but he doesn't understand him. Mxy is Clark's Joker, he just has been in the Silver Age for much, much, much longer. When Mxy breaks, when he finally falls and goes from a mere jester of japes and giggles who does somewhat malicious acts for the lulz to a true malevolent force, what do you expect to be left? Something not dissimilar to the Clown Prince of Crime. Something that doesn't just want to hurt Clark, he wants to ontologically refute Clark's existence. Mxy becomes Toxic Fandom embodied.
As interesting as this is it kind of falls apart with his stays away for 90 days bit. He can't jump to any universe at any point, otherwise he could come back to the point right after he is forced to leave. He is somehow incapable of entering certain universes at certain points in time.

For example we all know how dog and cat years are shorter than to our human years, despite we are all on the same 365 day cycling, and take snakes and turtle, I would presume their years are longer than us humans, since they can live centuries longer.
So it could be theorized that the reason he doesn't immediately reenter after a certain 90 day whatever, might have to do with that, and also he might also get bored and just decided to go to another dimension completely forgeting about the previous (more or less) because of this, for example if you had two vinyl records playing in different parts of the house one taking an hour and another taking a minute, you're going to forget to check the hour one because you're busy checking the minutes one and making sure it keeps playing, so you only remember the hour long one, once and a while.

He seems to at least on some level make the decision to stay away from the last time he was around.

I had assumed that when Mxy prepared to enter the My Adventures universe, he looked at different anime and manga to figure out what would be the oddest look for him to use, went with Dragon Ball, then rolled with it. Because outside of a few things he's been in, he has always looked odd or crazy. So him looking the way he did in My Adventures just fits.
Mxyzptlk is quite possibly my favourite Superman villain, easily top 3, such a fun silly interesting concept of having Superman fighting a magic imp that ends up having such wild far reaching consequences, I LOVE how he works, and his characterization is always so fun to me!
Also interesting to note he's essentially Superman's Superman. A being from another planet with powers far beyond his comprehension, and unlike his traditional powerful enemies who he can still brawl with, Supes has only his wits to help him and will use his strength in tandem to trick Mxy.
I like to think the Mxyzptlk we see in every DC work is the same being but under different appearances, being the evil one that appears and dies in the "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" imaginary tale his last chronological appearance

Honestly Gilbert Gottfried is like THE voice for Mr. Mxyzptlk. The character himself perfectly captures the whole
"wise-guy who knows all and sees all and like to mess around in the narrative and can yoink himself from it anytime he wishes, or some joe-shmoe gets him to say his name backwards." type guy.
It's like how Joker is usually seen with Mark Hamil's voice, or Kevin Conroy's Batman.
Their performances really defined the characters for us and nostalgia or not. Their voices just "sound" right.
A potential timeline based on Mr Mxy’s perspective (including lore not included in this video):
-Mr Mxy finds the book of Mxyztplkology as a kid
-He uses the book to mess with a young Clark Kent
-Mr Mxy’s father had to deal with his son once, informs Superboy (Clark) that to send Mr Mxy back then Mr Mxy needs to say his name backwards (implying that the name backwards rule is made up but it’s origins come from a rule his parent(s) made Mr Mxy follow when he was younger)
-Mr Mxy grows up whilst mastering his magic abilities, even landed himself a role close to the king and fell in love with princess Ms. Gsptlsnz
-The king unfortunately dies when another imp that was jealous of how close Mr Mxy has gotten to the king tried to kill Mr Mxy
-Mr Mxy then begins interacting with the Superman more often (wouldn’t be a surprise if he messed with multiple supermen at once so that he doesn’t have to wait three months or so to mess with any superman)
-During his interactions he learns of the benefits of lying, learned of Superman’s secret identity, and has children with Ms. Gsptlsnz (if they hadn’t already have a child prior)
-Eventually the 5th dimension tribunal punishes Mr Mxy for his crimes against the 3rd dimension, during said punishment he loses and then regains his magical hat
-After that it is possible that Mr Mxy killed the tribunal, becoming the soul ruler of the 5th dimension
-Some time after finishing his punishment, Mr Mxy pivots from prankster to full villain
-His life ends when his body gets torn in two

I am no DC or Mr. Mxy expert so thank you for telling me about this story, the story could theoretically be placed around the time Mxy pivots from trickster to full on malicious villain if someone is trying to fit all Mr Mxy appearances into one timeline.
As for Bipolar Mxy, anything is possible with his lore, he could have bipolar, he could be bipolar coded, it could be possible that what we view as bipolar is neurotypical behaviour for 5th dimension beings, or some other lore explanation that explains Mxy’s bipolar behaviour.
-lives in a world where his previous race or people were wiped out by some giant force that no longer exists.
-starts off goofing around with time travel books.
-gets caught but only put restrictions on him(the backwards name thing might be general rules)
-they don't know he found a magical hat.
-after messing with the third d he realizes it actually changes his slightly.
-meets superman, but he is young and its an evil comic version.
-superman shows the ability to enter their realm

I love Gilbert’s portrayal of Myxie so much. It’s the voice I hear when I read the character. Although I do really like the MAWS version.
One conclusion I make for this character is can there actually be anything that makes it not true? Even if mxy came out himself and said nope I was just kidding it’s not the same me in every appearance, then we could just say he was lying and keep the theory going. If there’s any inconsistencies we can just say oh that’s just mxy being mxy.
He is literally immune to continuity errors of any kind. And I kinda love that

I think there was a final issue of DC Comics Presents around the same time as Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow that also suggested Mr. Mxysptlk was a "cute disguise" for a more terrible monster. And another Byrne issue implying he was also The Beyonder, the alien interferer who triggered Secret Wars II.
My headcannon is that some (but not all) of the contradictions can be explained by were seeing things in a different order than how they happened to Mxy.

To explain away how Mxy can be super evil like in MAWS and then apologetic in the Arrowverse, maybe they're him at different points in time. In MAWS, for example, Mxy's appearance in that show could be when he's still in his prime of being a chaotic god of the multiverse, despite the show itself coming out way after Supergirl finished.
The concept of multiverse singularity characters is both fun and frustrating to me. I like it in instances like Marvel’s Celestials but not when Mojo says that he’s the only one. Mojo doesn’t have the same excuse that Mxyzptlk or the Celestials do

Yeah, he does w/ his small stature & robes. Since few don't have blue skin, people draw more comparisons to Angels.

I have to agree with most of everyone else. When I hear Mytz’s voice in the comics it is ALWAYS Gillby’s voice that I hear in my head. His voice is just so perfect for him! ( although I would love to see Danny Devito’s interpretation 😂)
Honestly I really liked David Errigo Jr.'s voice for them in MAWS a lot. Gottfried's voice for him is goated obv but I love the energy Errigo's voice has.

I gotta say, you wove the Gonzo bit throughout the video masterfully. On the note of the question of the day, the only answer I could give is Gilbert. His voice perfectly incapsulates Mxy by itself. I also feel like the best route to take Mxy in live action is a Who Framed Roger Rabbit style mix of live action and animation. It just feels like the type of way he'd present himself.

Gut's sword, The skyhook from Bioshock Infinite, The scissors from Clocktower, The Wabbajack from Skyrim, Lament puzzle box from Hellraiser, Princess Monoke bow?, Nero's sword from Devil May Cry, The laser gun from Akira, The Noisy Cricket from Men in Black, Shuriken from Naruto, Cervante's Gunblade from Soul Caliber and the pepper grinder gun from American McGee's Alice.
So much crammed into a little 3 second scene.

To answer the question of the day, its obviosuly Gilbert Gottfried. I hear his voice whenever I read him in a story. The current world's finest run is about have Mxy, Bat-Mite and other imps fight a 5th dimensionsal Doomsday or something its going to be a lot of fun!
This is a fantastic video, and it’s also responsible for me realizing that I apparently pronounce Mxyzptlk the way I do specifically because of Superfriends episodes that I have no memory of watching

Gilbert without question. Hes got such a unique and distinct voice that sounds impish and playful but also can slide into the nefarious and maybe even a bit evil end of things without missing a beat. Gilbert was fantastic and brought a certain gravitas to the role and to many others he inhabited.

I just had a terrifying thought: Myxyzptlk meeting Deadpool. They’d either turn whatever poor unfortunate universe they’re in into a Looney Tunes cartoon, hate each other’s guts, or both.
*An important thing to remember about that "no killing" rule:*
The 5th dimension is beyond time, so their perception of "kill" would be very different from ours. You have to think of things happening all-at-once. A temporary death doesn't count because even as it's happening, 5th dimensional beings are already aware it'll be reversed.
I have to believe the “hat is the source of my power” is some sort of curse the lawmakers put on him. Like, if there were a timeline, after the hat rule is undone is when Mxy takes over the 5th Dimension circa Super Friends. I also have to assume for Mxy time isn’t linear, like Doctor Manhattan’s version of time.
Well the original Young Justice comic issue 3 confirmed that Mxy's timeline does not flow the same as the 3rd dimension as it has a very young version of himself that they have to convince to become a prankster.
@@kagato3 Well, of course it doesn't! Time is the 4th dimension, and Mxy is from a dimension beyond that. Naturally, time isn't linear unless they want it to be (although it may be the default mode as they perceive it), just as I choose whether or not I want to stack a bunch of 2D sheets of paper into a 3D pile.
@@Compucles time is not necessarily the 4th dimension. It is a dimension but it isn't always treated as the 4th. A 5th dimensional being could still be bound by our concept of time just have access to 2 other spatial dimensions.
Mr.Mxyzptlk,iago and digit will always be my favorite Gilbert Gottfried roles.
I have watched his DCAU appearances the most. Gilbert was such an iconic voice actor it is hard to top that version. Plus I am a fan of his tiny purple suit.

Also, them getting Gilbert back for Justice League Action was a Real Treat. They went Hard on that Show's Cast for No Reason.
DCAU’s been so influential on how I read DC comics that Gilbert Gottfried is the voice I imagine when I read his lines, particularly in Emperor Joker, so I would say he’s definitely my favorite of all the actors and personifies Mxyzptlk the best. Plus it was great how he broke down the pronunciation of it in his premiere STAS ep and is the pronunciation I stick by.

I’m seriously thrilled to see that this theory pans out, it’s been one of the favorite concepts in fiction ever since they took this trait away from Darkseid in the New 52. Honestly it’s even funnier that, of all the beings in DC’s long history, it’s the purple leprechaun rip-off that gets to be the multiversal constant.
And it makes sense Mxy loves to fuck with superman so of course Mxy wants to fuck with other superman.
Now I want to see a story in which the Riddler gets Mxy's powers by just.... Getting their hats confused. That would be an absolute blast to read
