On a PC the best way is to install a French Canadian keyboard: it has all the required accents / accented letters and, unlike the French French keyboard, is a QWERTY. On a Mac, just hold down the respective key and the variants of the letter will appear to choose from - just like on an iPhone.
This is one of the major problem that is disturbing me when practice writing/constructing sentences using my PC in french but through the help/advancement of technology I started to no how to get these accents marks using the key board. Thank you so much for your effort. May God bless you and all of us that ready to learn this language from Unisa Kekuda all the way in Sierra Leone. Merci beacoup I like that. au revoir.
If the PC keys didn't work for you, try it this way: Hold ALT and use the keypad on the right, not the numbers at the top. L'accent aigu - (é) ALT 0233 L'accent grave - (è) ALT 0232 L'accent circonflexe - (ê) ALT 0234 Un cédilla - (ç) ALT 0231 Also, if you open Character Map, it will give you the ALT numbers for other letters, including upper case.
I just switch the keybord settings in PC :-D You can set up multiple preferred languages and switch between them with windows logo key (hold key) and space bar (push) + if you open keybord on desktop to check out where everything lies in French style keybord, you can easily combine your writing on English keybord with occasional switches to French keybord just for the accents.
None of the previously mentioned methods work for me in Windows 10. However, you can just add a French keyboard in Settings->Language, or, make a document with the accented letters to copy/paste from.
Newer Mac operating systems on laptops and desktop machines work like smartphones - no key combinations required. Just press the key and your accent options appear for your selection.
Great clip. Thanks. I found that you can easily add most language keyboard options to both your mobile devise and mac. IOS (mac). For mac: Select apple icon, then click on system preferences. Select "international" icon on personal line. Select "Input Menu" (top to the right) Make sure to check boxes for: "Keyboard" and "Character Palette" Scroll down to select language(s) for keyboard. Before exiting, make sure box on bottom is checked 'Show input menu in menu bar' And you're done. Language(s) should now show in menu bar (flag icon) as drop down. Select your language keyboard. It is suggested that you also select "Keyboard Viewer" This will allow you to see a virtual keyboard in upper left. Pressing keys will be highlighted on viewer. No guessing or memorizing needed. And the "Shift" key will show alternate keys on viewer. I'm sure there is a youtube tutorial clip available. Happy typing.
I just downloaded a French keyboard on my PC. For my phone I just switched the language to French, and because it was originally in English I obtained both types of keyboards. But that really just changes the words it recommends and autocorrects to. If you want accented characters you just hold down the button for the letter you want an accent on.
Merci. je suis apprendre fraçias seul, et vous aides moi beaucoup if that didn't make sense , which i am guessing it did not. Thank you, i have been learning french on my own since a long time and recently found your videos, they are very helpful and easy. Thank you so much.

Thank you, this is good for my Mac. On my 2 year old smartphone, I set up the French language so that I can flip the language between English and French.
Wow, so simple and yet so hard to find with a Google search. Thanks!!! Before, I would copy the letters from French text and then change format to match my message font.
Very helpful and much easier than using 'insert symbol' ! (had to search for the ` on my US keyboard (we use them in Australia) It's under the ~.) That may help Sarahandherworld
I knew this trick and it works on Word, Wordpad, PowerPoint and generally other Microsoft products on a PC. This does not work on Notepad, web browsers, WhatsApp etc. at least on a PC. For these, I just copy paste from Word or Wordpad -but that is not an ideal solution. Please let me know if there is anything better? Does it make sense to buy an external physical keyboard that is made in France (i.e., not QWERTY) and hook it up to type in French for a more general solution. Thanks
Thanks a lot..I've been really into a lot of trouble with these accents since I 'm doing some translations recently and your video truly helped a lot!! Thumbs up!!
I started learning the French keyboard with the q instead of a and m in the wrong place till I stumbled on this video. I think it might be easier this way if you're French too.
Salut Géraldine, I use Alt and the number pad when my laptop is connected to my wireless keyboard. But when I'm on the road I don't take the keyboard with me and so have been unable to use accents. I just tried your suggestions and they didn't work. I'm using a Gateway PC. Suggestions? Merci. --Kelly
Salut Géraldine, Merci beaucoup pour votre vidéo sur les accents - ce qui est très utile pour moi, quand j'ai envoyer courrier electronique à mes amis français Merci encore Jerry
This is an excellent video, Géraldine. I've learned, thank you. BTW, could you also let us know how to type in ë, ï, œ, ÿ, which I believe are also French characters, from the PC. Thank you.
I tried your suggestion, say Control and apostrophe, then the letter e...hmm, did not work with Windows 10, but if I recall it worked with Windows 7. To write a word starting with the letter A, and to pronounce it Aa like far, the Merriam Webster dictionary says to use A with an up angle on top as Â. The American Heritage dictionary says use Ä. I have to go to Start, Windows accessories, then character map, then find the character I want. Or, learning from character map, to use the first one, I hold the Alt key, press 0194 then let go the Alt key. Alt 0196 then let go, gives me the second one. I see another way, that starts with U for unicode but it seems awfully difficult; have no idea how to use it. Ah, with Win 10, I learned from another video, this trick: I right click on the Taskbar, then choose "show touch keyboard button." Then when I left click on that keyboard icon which now will be on the taskbar, I left click on a character like a and hold; all kinds of accented characters show up and I move my mouse and choose what I want! Voila! Works great!
Super! Çà marche très bien sur mon smartphone. La seule chose qui ne marche pas sur mon PC dans c'est l'accent grave. Mais çà ne marche pas ici; cependant je peux changer mon clavier en Français. Merci mille fois!!
Thank you for the tips Géraldine, I wrote down the combinations to use in future. On PC I would either copy the letters from the special signs table in Windows (don't know the proper name for it in English though) or copy and paste from a translator or a French text, both rather annoying ways on dealing with the problem. On smartphone, I'm guilty of using a French keyboard and the dictionary which takes care for the accents (and I don't have to check the spelling of every single word). I know it's pretty lazy of me, but it allows me to comment videos in French without spending a whole lot of time on writing them (and I do know the spelling of the majority of words that I use). Bonne journée à tous!
Can someone please tell me where to find the letter "h" on the French keyboard? That's really all I want to know. My French lessons on Duolingo have come to a sudden halt for my inability to make sense of the keyboard. Thanks for this video. Once I'm more advanced, God permitting, I shall return.
These do not work on a pc unless you're in MS Word, in which case it's easy enough to find them in the "special characters" when you click "Insert" followed by "special character". Forget about using these in youtube search boxes or other instances outside of Word.

those are the ones I know.

Thank you Geraldine. It is so nice to know how to do these accents now!
For Windows with Int. US:
Accent grave (à, è, ...): ` + vowel
Accent aigu (é): ' + e
Cédille (ç): ' + c
Circonflexe (ê): ^ (shift + 6) + e
Tréma (ö, ï): " (shift + ') + o
« »: ctrl + alt + [ ou ]

Same foe me. Most disappointed with Windows 10 in a lot of ways.
Merci beaucoup Géraldine. Another piece in the French learning jigsaw puzzle now solved for me. Je suis très content.!

Super, Géraldine ! Merci. J'ai justement une doute : comment je peux mettre les guillemets en usant un clavier pc?

Bonjour, I usually use a character map for my accents and typing in different languages on a computer.
I started learning the French keyboard with the q instead of a and m in the wrong place till I stumbled on this video. I think it might be easier this way if you're French too.
Actually this is useless, because it just works in word processors, it doesn't work in browsers 😥
These don't work on my pc :( If I press Alt Gr and e,a or o I can get áéó but not the others. Hmmm
On UK keyboard, there is a back quote in the extreme corner on the number row. Press that then the vowel needed for è, à, ì, ò, ù. Hope it helps
merci beaucoup mais comment on fais pour utiliser des accent sur un clavier uk ????
How do I do the capital letters for accent grave or aigue?

Thank you Steve 27775 - using the number keyboard in the right made it work. Thanks also to Fazri Gading.
However they are all coming up as CAPITAL LETTERS. Does anyone know how to alter this? Thanks.
Are there standard ways to type without accents in french? Like germans ae,oe,ue, äöü, å aa, sz ss ß. Or ny for spanish ñ?

This is an excellent video, Géraldine. I've learned, thank you. BTW, could you also let us know how to type in ë, ï, œ, ÿ, which I believe are also French characters, from the PC. Thank you.
Don't know on PC but on Mac opt+u then the character.œ is opt+q.
Merci.
Thanks. I cannot get the second and third one to work for the letters a i o. It only puts the accents above the e.
Does not work in my Excel 2007. Ctrl + Alt gives acute accents over 'e' and 'a' but anyone know any others for Excel?
