I used the F.A.N.G. as a scout/surveillance vehicle, but mostly, it was an escape vehicle! That slippery Cobra Commander always had one on site to make his getaway when the Joes assaulted whatever "Secret base" he was using. Also, many a captured Joe would make his escape from Cobra's clutches, by commandeering the copter.
While true that the FANG was no match against the Dragonfly or anything else the Joes had, but what about against local law enforcement? It seems somewhat ideal for urban assault and maybe even as minor air support for ground forces, so long as our heroes don't get a chance to call for air support. Anybody else want to debate that?
I think that's what it is perfect for a few fangs could definitely put the hurt and instill fear on some noisome trouble makers not accepting the Cobra way
Like what others have been saying, I think it is an assault copter, but with a caveat. It is meant to be a small striking or troop support vehicle. Some that is ideal for dealing with 13 special op green shirts. Think of it as a bee. By itself, it'll make you crash your car or run arms flailing. But in a swarm, everyone panics and abandons all hope.
As a kid, all I wanted was 'bad guys'. They were infinitely cooler in design in my opinion. Skeletor, Storm-Troopers, and Mum-ra were my favorites! Not to mention the Decepticons.
The lighting on the back of the box reminds me of the asteroid scene in Disney’s “The Black Hole” ! I love late 70’s/ 80’s lighting. Very dated, but cool.
It really should have came with a ladder for picking up troopers from the Morays or other boats. As an attack helicopter it was just way out gunned. I've fitted mine with a homemade hook ladder that works great for just that purpose. One on each side of the runners for even weight distribution. Although if you have 10 of them you could attack a Whale or dogfight a Dragonfly. By itself is suicide.
Another blast from the past, the F.A.N.G. captured our hearts ever since it appeared in comic books and first episodes of the animated show. As much as it might look inadequate for any serious attack (although it has 4 missiles and an auto-cannon), it was designed for a stealthy quick in-and-out operations, but when needed to make a serious damage, Cobra would send F.A.N.Gs en masse to raise havoc both on the ground and in the air. Also it is a great mean of transportation when some 'tactical regrouping' of the Cobra top brass is required as well. If you disregard how the figures fit into the F.A.N.G. and how the head protrudes more than it should (it should be attributed to flawed toy design) putting the pilot in danger, in cartoon and comic the pilot sits comfortably away from the reach of the helicopter blade.
The Fang was always one of my favorites, Top tier all the way for a kid with little money. Loaded for bear, you could go for hours attacking joes left and right. Thank you for the re-visit. I am however surprised that at the end Mrs. HCC didn't show up in the Dragonfly, sense you never let her fly the reviews.
Cobra Commander was usually seen escaping Calling "Cobra RETREAT" with Destro or the Baroness flying the Fang. Great Review You didn't mention how close to pilot's head was to the rotor.
I would have said the FANG is an attack helicopter before this review because if you get squadron of FANGS together they could gang up Dragon Fly's and being a small target has its advantage. BUT, after the examples noted from this review, and remembering several times the FANG was used to escape and the end of some TV episodes- notably Destro escaped at the end of The MASS Device in a FANG, and Zartan and the Dreadnoks escaped at the end of Countdown for Zartan on a single FANG, it was the COBRA's go-to losers walk vehicle. I never owned this as a kid. My friend Troy and his older brothers had a lot of the 82-84 figures and vehicles, and this was one of them. I played with it a couple times but those missiles didn't want to stay put, and I did see it offered in the catalogs, but my eye and dollars were drawn towards the HISS tank and figure sets from past years. Admittedly, I think my 1st Cobra aircraft was the Dreadnok Swamp Fire.
I saw that head gag coming a mile away, then got disappointed near the end when I didn't think you were going to do it. Then it was even better than I expected! LOL. love the nerd humor, it's just my cup of tea!
Great review about one of my favorite Cobra vehicles. IMHO the Cobra Viper also looks awesome with the FANG. That's why I use to display my FANG with the Viper.
Great video! Thinking back to the red engine shroud and the missiles, I seem to remember the material being very grainy laterally. We had melamine cups in the Navy on subs that had a similar texture. The body and bomb was made of a harder plastic than the skids. The skids had some flex, while the missiles did not feel like either. It is the same conundrum I face when I wonder why they changed the weapons from hard plastic (sharper detail, i.e. Grunt, Stalker, V1 Snake Eyes, etc.) to the more rubber like plastic (Frostbite's starlight scope rifle). You mentioned how Cobra had no regard for troop safety. This mentality may have been adopted from the Soviet Union. I know there submarines were severely lacking on reactor shielding compared to their US counterparts. Less shielding means less weight, less weight means faster boat. It also means the crew glows in the dark during a reactor SCRAM!
Great review (sorry about the head). I used to wrap a string around the blade housing and pull it to spin the rotors as fast as I could. I also attached that ladder shaped string from mini-blinds as, well, a rolled-up ladder!
Got a remake of a video plus an alternate version from Action Force. You out did yourself this time Super Hoodie CoCo! Like the repaint of Tripwire for the Action Force SAS Hawk. Great video as always!
The F.A.N.G. copter was one of my favorite toys as a kid, though it really isn't designed to go into combat. (Despite the fact they kept sending it into combat.) But still, I really liked it as a kid.
Back in 84 o used to play with the Action Force SAS Hawk with pilot Blades . Then the other year I brought Hawk and Blades off the net. Love the reviews.
This is a vehicle I did have. It was fun and cheap. I like that they had cheap vehicles in addition to the more expensive, fancy ones. I had the HISS tank but not the armor nor the glider. I am hoping my comments on older videos is more useful than annoying but trying to show this website what videos it should be promoting to others (all the HCC videos). P.S. The poll did not show up on this play.
You can get repro roll cages for any Fangs that are missing theirs, but there is a problem. Repros tend to be very brittle, and if you examine the rotor mount, there are two studs that stick out of each side that are just above the roll cage. These are a problem as it’s impossible to insert a repro without asserting pressure, that results in the rail cage easily snapping. And believe me, I’ve gone through five for my Hawk with still no result. Though strangely I was able to put a red one in place on a Fang with no trouble. It did require I file down the tabs on the part. But about the two studs on the side of the rotor mount. There appears to be two variations of the Fang. Ones that have these and ones that don’t.
In the 80's as a kid, I never struggled putting the long missiles on. I'm guessing the plastic has hardened or changed in some way over time. Now, it takes forever to get them on and they often fall off soon after.
It's just a flesh wound. I love how in retrospect the FANG is symbolic of the growth of Cobra from insurgency to full grown international threat. Yes they started with the Fang, but that's still a huge step up from AK-47's. Plus I'm sure Cobra spent more on the HiSS project. And don't grief the FANG too much. At it's cost, it was probably never one-on-one against a Dragonfly. More likely, a swarm of 3-4 would attack each GI Joe aircraft. Both on the battlefield and the backyard.
The Fang helicopter looks like one of those rides that spin u around while in a seat that resembles a similar looking helicopter. I took a pic of one of those things on a story and said "I found the Cobra Fang" and people of the Joe community found it hilarious
One of my favorites. It may be impractical, but it was a fun toy. I actually never had any nameless Cobra troopers except for vehicle drivers, so unique characters always flew my FANG. Destro looks good in it, but I think he usually manned the HISS cannons, so Major Bludd or Cobra Commander usually flew the FANG.
Hoodie coco went and lost his head over our support! Thanks for sharing the review with us! Keep up the great work bud! I do agree the F.A.N.G. makes for a better escape vehicle when going against the Joes, but if they were just stealing supplies or attacking a strategic location that wasn't well armed, the F.A.N.G.s would probably serve well as an attack choppa! Kind of lime the baby Huey's in Black Hawk Down! #imo
The back of the boxes always showed hand made, hand painted prototypes since the toys would be manufactured at the same time as the packaging was being prepared. Typical in the toy industry at the time. The prototypes have a different sheen because of the paint, the sharp edges always show the thickness of the paint. Many interesting subtle variations. note the European versions could actually use the actual toys since they would be 1 or 2 years behind. European laws also might have prevented from illustrating a different product than the contents. Action force had clear window boxes and pretty much most European boxes re-did the back pictures to show production models ( US toys ) with slightly different stickers.
In a comic my rother and I used to purchase called 'Battle: ACTION FORCE" a story arc explains how cobra stole the blueprints for the FANG coptor off of SAS force. It was the Baroness who masterminded this heist after seducing a scientist she subsequentially assasinated
The bubble torrent of the dang is the best feature. I want it to be used in real life. A real life version of it to be used in a demonstration/target shooting gallery.
the WWII German tanks could take on 4 American tanks and come out on top. Unfortunately, for Germany, the U.S. always had 5 tanks. Same theory here. Thanks for posting.
Great video great watch after the hurricane lol. I wonder if based on the prototype pic on the back of box the fang was developed in 82? The back peg looks similar to the straight arm back pegs, probably not but it's just a theory a Gi-Joe theroy
The F.A.N.G. is heavily armed, considering its small size. It is really much too small - the pilot's head is far too close to the rotors. I would like to see it with a basic canopy, but I don't know if that could have been done at this size. This is a classic little light air attack vehicle, and much more realistic than some of the other similar small vehicles you could compare it to like the Trubble Bubble or the Skyhawk. It would represent a serious threat to any ground forces without air cover.
I think it is extremely unfair sir,to completely blame the missiles for there lack of holdonabilaty.and yes I just made that word up,or maby I didn't,I dont care.equal blame should have been placed on the landing skid tabs.further more,I I picked up a 2008 remold for cost reasons, and at least on mine the issue has not been resolved so shame on you hasbro(or whatever corporate conglomerate that may or may not own that license now)shame on you.........lol...I think you're reviews are great.keep up the good work.
I went a paid the extra for a complete fang with an intact roll bar cover and the thing broke while putting it on..i dont like to do repro parts if i dont have to but this is one case that i definitely did. The red is alittle bit darker then the original but its 10times stronger then that fragile plastic hasbro gave us
I don't know. I think a FANG could fly circles around the Dragonfly. The Fly is also a much larger target. The FANG has a pretty small target profile. I think with the right pilot, a FANG could take down a Dragonfly without a problem.
I never liked the FANG. Thought it was an ultra cheap vehicle. Cobra always got the short end of the stick when it came to vehicles, command centers, and real character development.
"The reason for this is Hasbro's concern that kids would not want to spend money on bad guys." How did they get ideas like that, or that boys wouldn't buy girl action figures and so on? It's especially strange with the popularity of Star Wars toys right there for them to see that kids wanted "bad guys" just the same.
Hell, the Joes had enough heavily-armed soldiers you didn't even NEED air support to bring down FANGs. The pilots had no real protection from incoming fire, so even nearby misses that produced shrapnel would shred any poor soul piloting it. Not to mention Joes jumping/landing on-board and tossing poor unsecured pilots overboard...
FANG coptors are like the TIE Fighters in Star Wars. Cheap, mass produced, and made with no regard for the pilot.
I can see the similarities. Does that make a HISS tank the equivalent of a Century tank (aka TIE Crawler)?
I used the F.A.N.G. as a scout/surveillance vehicle, but mostly, it was an escape vehicle! That slippery Cobra Commander always had one on site to make his getaway when the Joes assaulted whatever "Secret base" he was using. So true!!!!
in the cartoon they had a lot of crimson guards piloting the fang and I think they look best in the fang next to the cobra trooper.
Like what others have been saying, I think it is an assault copter, but with a caveat. It is meant to be a small striking or troop support vehicle. Im glad that you re-shot this one. The FANG is my favorite Cobra vehicle. I had to glue me missiles because they broke at the connection point.
Great video! Thinking back to the red engine shroud and the missiles, I seem to remember the material being very grainy laterally. We had melamine cups in the Navy on subs that had a similar texture. This was one of my first vehicles. I remember my mom buying it for me at Albertsons. Love the blue screen work.
I had two cobra fangs as a kid. great toy. God bless you for making this video!

Congrats on 6k Subs. Fun update video on the Fang.
I just laugh every time I see that ending. Let’s stand up and cheer for Hoodie Co Co!
You really did lose your head over this video HCC. I am surprised that Susan wasn't around to argue over who would fly the F.A.N.G!!

F.A.N.G was a Cobras cost effective terror machine! Lol
the WWII German tanks could take on 4 American tanks and come out on top. Unfortunately, for Germany, the U.S. always had 5 tanks. Same theory here. Thanks for posting.

I prefer my FANG with Major Bludd.
Hello from Montréal, Canada
As usual great stuff.
Any idea when you will get around to reviewing the Cobra S.T.U.N. ?
Great video
I wanted a Fang and a Cobra soldier. I liked the small helicopter and thought it made alot of sense
Personally, I love the Stinger driver in the F.A.N.G. I tend to think of Stinger driver as a generic Cobra vehicle operator.
The F.A.N.G. is heavily armed, considering its small size. It is really much too small - the pilot's head is far too close to the rotors. I would like to see it with a basic canopy, but I don't know if that could have been done at this size. The fang reminds me of the Sherman tank of ww2, Not very powerful and simple but could be produced in huge numbers.

It would make a GOOD Night Force vehicle !!!
I also had the black tank you could hide weapons underneath the torrid that's spun
The sky hawk looks more in line with a cobra vehicle
Tomahawk one of my favorite
I had the Fang but it never made it through the fire years or should I say pyro years
I drew up a tech-spec data sheet on the F.A.N.G.
Hey is there gonna be a livestream tonight
I feel that the F.A.N.G. was better suited as a ground support vehicle.
I don't know. I think a FANG could fly circles around the Dragonfly. The Fly is also a much larger target. The FANG has a pretty small target profile.
I think with the right pilot, a FANG could take down a Dragonfly without a problem.
traumatizing. you will be in my nightmares tonight.
30mm cannon and four missiles, plus bomb? That's legit armament. Small and cheap? A swarm of these things coming in low would be a lot of firepower.
Yo-Cobra Commander788
Surprised Action Force didn't get sued for Copyright infringement. Because that was easily a reproduction of the F.A.N.G.
It was licensed by Hasbro for the international markets.
I'd say the roll cage is far more problematic than the missiles.
I always called mine FANH. ; )
I never liked the FANG. Thought it was an ultra cheap vehicle. Cobra always got the short end of the stick when it came to vehicles, command centers, and real character development.
HCC788, will you be doing other re-vamped (sorry, bad pun) videos like this one?
"The reason for this is Hasbro's concern that kids would not want to spend money on bad guys."
How did they get ideas like that, or that boys wouldn't buy girl action figures and so on? It's especially strange with the popularity of Star Wars toys right there for them to see that kids wanted "bad guys" just the same.
LMAO!!! great review great ending.
I think F.A.N.G. should've stood for Fast Attack Neutralizer Ground-assault (Doesn't that sound a bit better?)
Please don't raise your arms while blades are spinning.🙌😐😮😁😂😂😂
...Or stand up in the cockpit... 🤔
Otherwise, you'll have an OFFHANDED flight lesson! *rimshot*
negator bomb means a navegator or gided bomb.
the best thing FANG mk.2 could have provided would have been a canopy! ahh, wishful thinking....
I have one mint in the box factory sealed. Selling it if anyone is interested.
Hell, the Joes had enough heavily-armed soldiers you didn't even NEED air support to bring down FANGs. Hcc you’re gonna crash your propeller keeps slowing down
Silly.. target practice for Joes
