Do you section when you style or not? Let me know if you try this and if it helps! Step by step guide is on my blog: genamarie.co/2024/04/how-to-section-curly-hair-when-styling-for-beginners/
I do section but think the way I sectioned added to the separation in an area at back of crown. Will try your suggestions for sectioning next wash to help resolve that
I am the worst at sectioning. I try to use the same sections that you do. Styling the bottom is great, but when I let down each of the following sections they always get mixed up with the hair I've already done and it's like I might as well have just left it all down in the first place😢
That's where using alligator clips comes in handy. After styling a section, I use two alligator clips to keep the styled hair in place before moving on to the next section, ensuring that the hair doesn't overlap
Wow Gena this video is so good. I didn’t realize I was sectioning my hair in a way that was causing my brush to snag the top clipped section. I thought that I should leave it looser so that I wouldn’t be crushing my curls that I had yet to style and so was sleeping that top section in as loose of a clip as I could and literally every time I would try to get close to the route to brush style. I would snack at top section and so I stopped vertically brushed dialing started, horizontally, brushed, biling from under knee, and it wasn’t giving the results that I liked because it was moving underneath my hair, but not on top of the hair and it was making all of my curls kind of joint together… it was a mess. I can’t wait until my next wash day so I can try all your tips out. Also I wanted to say that the way you explained exactly how to get a good section with the fingers *bravo! Chefs kiss!!!!!!!!! That is the most in depth it has ever been said and I really think it’s going to help a lot of people, especially mom’s like me. my daughter’s too young (6) currently but I have a playlist of how to teach her how to do her hair and this is going on it. The way you really broke down how to move your finger under the hair is something I’ve never thought about, I just do it because I have to have perfect sections that show the whole scalp and move every hair to make that perfect line. But I think I would have just said put you finger on your head and like draw a line…. Which especially for a kid who hasn’t done it before is just not enough info to get it right. So thank you! Times 2!
I've been waiting for this kind of video!!!! I have thick, high-porosity wavy hair and brush-styling is a mystery to me. I'm so tired of flat roots and waves that don't last for days. I can't wait to try these tips. Thank you so much Gena!❤
Thank you for creating this video Gena Marie. I have the hardest time styling my hair lately and this helped me so much. My hair looked almost exactly like your hair today and I was so pleased. Thank you for this video and all your informative curly hair videos. You're a great teacher.
Thank you so much for this video!!! It's perfect for me, I'm just starting the second month of my wavy hair journey and the results I get from just simple raking & applying products upside down aren't yielding the results I want so I've been wanting to try brush styling. Your channel has been a great source for me as I learn all there is to learn about my newfound wavy hair (I thought menopause was just giving me frizzy hair after a lifetime of straight hair).
@jetdsf , I would not have considered myself a "wavy" until menopause. I'm very curious about women who have experienced this and would love to see a show of hands from those that experienced getting wavy around menopause.
Thank you so much for this video!! 😍 I struggle with knowing where my hair is supposed to part when I section but I'm going to try just letting it fall and see where it ends up!
Thank you so much! I’ve been trying to experiment and figure out what works for my hair and how to do different styles. There are so many explanations that don’t actually show you how to do everything, and your videos are the first that broke it down so that I could cut out the guess work.
THANK YOU so so much for how much detail you put into your explanations, as well as the written step and their purpose! This is the most informative tutorial I’ve seen and I finally feel like I know how to start treating my 2b hair the way it’s been begging me to treat it for 35 years.
I would like to see a review of you using the new Curlsmith full body volume line.I am so excited I have been waiting for this line.I love volume. I can't wait to try this line. I love their products.
Thanks for breaking this down so thoroughly! I basically follow the same sectioning and styling process you do, but I can see now my sections when brush styling are way too big and that’s where I need to focus to get the end result I want!
So glad it helped! Yes, you dont want your section to be larger than the width of your brush, and not too small that you hair just falls out with no tension
So glad you did this. Thank you very much. You’ve helped me out a ton with all your content! I do section and brush style & am looking forward to trying the sectioning tips you shared.
My hair is chin length and fine. I think this will help define my curls better. I usually just scrunch the products in, but I can't wait to give this a try. Thank you for your great videos :)
Thank you thank you for this video I feel like you made it just for me 😁. Waiting for the brush to come into stock. Your finished results are beautiful
This is very helpful, thankyou for taking your time here and being precise on the how & why! I also have a problem area on one side and have been getting that tell-tell parting of hair in back crown from sectioning so will be using these tactics to correct 🎉❤
Heyy I have that hair brush ♡ my daughter does too. You slayed this! Easy to follow ♡ my only problem is I dont use heat at all. I need a routine for that. I shower at night. Apply my many products and I clip my hair on top of my head when I sleep.. not too comfortable but it works. My hair is perfect the next day.
You don't sleep with wet hair, do you? 😬 Only asking because I used to sleep with wet hair and was told it was really bad to do that. Guess it increases scalp infections and other issues. 🫣😖
@@nikkideee94 Gulity. I do. Partially at least. I shower a cpl hours before bed. My hair and scalp are perfectly healthy and I have been doing it for years. I swear on everything I had a curly girl routine long before it was a thing. People thought I was insane the amount of products I used to create a cast but I had no frizz. Much easier nowadays.
@@GenaMarie I do own a great blowdryer. I will check it out. I only tried once and it went horribly wrong. I was always scared of blowdryers because it would make me look like I stuck my finger in a light socket when I was little. Now its just I do not know how to properly do it and do not want any heat damage.
@HonesTeaBeauTea hey girl, no judgments here. You do what works best for YOU. There's many tips and tricks that Gena shares with us, and I am forever grateful to have found her channel. I've learned many things from her. Unfortunately, diffusing and brush styling do not work for my hair, I've tried brush styling a few different times, and I'm left with flat hair on top and by the end of the day it's frizzy and messy. Diffusing makes my hair wicked frizzy. I don't understand it, but I get better results from air drying. As they say different strokes for different folks. If what you're doing is working for you, then by all means, continue doing it. 🤍
This is I think the most helpful video you have ever made! If your hair is to short to pull back in a jaw clip, do you have any suggestions for what to do after your bottom section is done then? Thanks for the attention to detail in this video!
Thank you so much! What if you try using multiple clips along the bottom? You could just gather the hair on each side and the back separately versus stretching it all to the back? I could also maybe see the duck bill clips working in this instance
Love your videos. So frustrated regarding bounce curl brush. Have been wanting it for a very long time. Besides being sold out is more than half the cost of the brush to ship to Canada. Just don’t have that kind of money. I do have the denman and tangle teaser. I have very fine but a lot of loose curls. Not sure which is better? Hair gets pretty tangled.
do you have any videos on what to do for curls that are stretched out from wearing it tied back? the top layer of my hair is such a problem and the styling i do for the bottom layer never works for it. do the stretched curls needs more protein or more moisture?
I found I need to pre-section and clip the second and third sections on top. That way I'm not fumbling with half my hair after the back section. The Goody clips are great!
I struggle to section my hair because I have a middle part. I’ve tried various ways but nothing works 😭. They just start mixing up or the back of my hair doesn’t style well and stays frizzy
I have a lot of shorter hairs at the base of my neck too... Also, I get a lot of "D" knots.. where ONE hair strand gets a knot in it and increases the chance of tangles/breakage... My ends go super curly so it's hard to stop the little knots...I'm about a 3B
I get those a lot and single strand knots. A haircut helps a lot and using a little oil to increase slip. I need to use oil more but don’t often enough
How long does this gel styling routine take when you’re not doing a demo? Also, do you have an even curl pattern throughout your head or are there different patterns, some curlier than others? The back of my head is quite curly while the sections around my face are more wavy.
It takes me about 10-15 minutes to style and 10-15 to diffuse. My fastest routine that includes washing is about 35 minutes total. And yes I have many different curl patterns which is why sectioning helps me make them more even.
So I just purchased the Curlsmith Styling Souffle. Ive only used it once and it did not do what I wanted it to do especially for volume. So I am wandering if I should get a volumizer, curl cream or something else?? If you can advise.
i'm suffering so much with stringy hair right in the middle of the length. i'm thinking it's because, for years, i've worn my hair in a bun for days on end with no breaks. will this eventually fix itself or do i have to cut my hair and start over?
I have a similar issue from the same thing. Use a satin/silk pillow case and bonnet. I just keep practicing and finding which products work in my hair. I'm on that journey now. Just this week, lol But my hair does look better already. I practiced diffusing 1st, then I practiced sectioning, and now I'm trying products. I did purchase 2 brushes (I already had the never used diffuser lol) I'm finding that the right product is super helpful and practice not to keep your hair up. And I swear on everything, rosemary tea HELPS! Drink a cup daily or at least 3 times a week. I had 2 inches of new growth within 6 weeks. I have damaged hair, mostly from over wetting my hair. I just did that weird section of hair with the new curl brush (my hair is very wispy there), and it actually looks amazing, shiny, and bouncy. I used the curl bounce brush with the ouidad ACC gel. I hope you find your perfect combo!
Still can’t find anything the works… shortish, thin, curl-wavy hair - everything is too heavy or too light and nothing seems to work to get me pretty curls…😢
