I was going to mention that all the reviewers said that, but didn't even think that was worth the time. They don't really sound like Joy Division to me and I think most Interpol fans agree!
Necessary to inform the listener. The comparison introduced me to Joy Division and it is spot-on. The guitar playing is much like Ricky Wilson of the B-52s as well.
I wouldn’t even call it a deep cut, all the non-singles on Bright Lights are my favorite. Leif Erickson, Stella Was a Diver, Roland, so good all the way through
SAME! I've seen them in Prag which was the opening show of the TOTBLXV tour and when they came back the second time to play Specialist (multiple people shouted the title throughout the show), I remember people hugging and nearly crying from happiness. That was such an emotional moment, I'll never forget it. They haven't played that song for 7 years before that.
I'm jealous, I have to wait until the end of November.. :( But then it's gonna be 3 shows and I'm excited. Have fun! The setlists from this tour look awesome imho. Pioneer to the Falls is amazing live and they play it a lot nowadays : )
Don't forget about Editors, 2 amazing vans that are not as well known as they should be because they're not pop stars dancing around grabbing their crotches and smacking asses, the is travesty that more people don't get to hear this music
As a boy of 18 in 2002, Turn on the bright lights was a real watershed moment in terms of a sound that would end up living with me for the rest of my life. Antics - for me, the most perfect album I've ever listened to. All in all, pound for pound, Interpol are the band of my life. Those first two albums especially will be played and listened to by me until my last days. Underrated? By the wider population? No doubt. But do I care? Not one bit. I always feel that the relationship between a true 'fan' and that of a band is very personal. I couldn't give a shit what someone else thinks of Interpol.
The most amazing band, most people don't even know about. LEAGUES above any music released in mainstream media today, it's actually unreal! Thanks for this, great job!
The true genius behind why Interpol worked so great was Carlos D. You hear of bands that never recapture their greatness after the lead singer left the band. I can't think of a band that lost its true sound and essence after the bassist left.
Honestly, the self-titled album was amazing in its own right. People tend to have a bad habit of overly comparing previous works to it. The the self-titled album was the most emotional of all of Interpol's work. The drastic shift in tone once you hit Always Malaise is insane, not to take away from the first half which is also very good. All I'm saying is that next time you listen to the album, don't think of their previous works. Just listen and *feel* the music.
I hated it so much on the beggining. But then, it grew more and more on me, and suddenly, I was in love with it. Although it's hard to rank, I find it their third best album, followed by OLTA and ElPintor
NirvanaFrk97 I completely agree. Perhaps because I’ve experienced that profound heartache that they portray in the self titled album with their lyrics and songs. My god, it gets to my soul and those songs give me chills. I have to say it’s my favorite album of theirs. I am so surprised that people don’t like it. I listen to it a few times a week.
Their album ‘Our love to admire’ creates a viceral response for me because I listened to it a lot on my little usb mp3 player as a teenager just after my mum died, I love them but I exclusively listen to them in dark times because it takes me back to that moment and reminds me that, no matter bad things seem, it’ll never be as bad as was then.
Quarantine really made me revisit Interpol, one of my favorite rock bands, and their amazing discography that I realized I still love to this day. They weren't in my all-time list but I feel now that they should be up there because I'm surprised that their stuff really holds up well, even the later releases (Marauder is fantastic imo!). I appreciate the non-Joy Div comparison. Nobody wants to admit it but I really think they sound more like A Thousand Leaves/Murray Street-era Sonic Youth than any other post-punk band they always get compared to.
NYC will forever be my favorite Interpol song and I think it’s criminally underappreciated. That song unlocks emotions within me I didn’t know I could feel and brings me to a place that I don’t want to leave. It makes me so emotional and it’s only 2 chords.
Honestly man thank you for this. Great video, the love for interpol I have is substantial and I have never found another person who listened to them. It confuses me how all of their songs have millions of plays on spotify but apparently in the 5 towns I have lived in here not one person knows of them.
Another cool band to listen to is CRX. They are lead by Nick Valensi of The Strokes. His vocals are very interesting and the album has an industrial feel. It is also produced by Josh Homme so it has some of his sound mixed in
How come this got posted in may, and I’m just watching this in September?!!! Great video, amazing work, and really loved the ending with “The New” live.
Great little doc. I was surprised about the acclaim or lack of it self titled got , especially with tracks like success, memory serves, lights , and always malaise , so haunting and so interpol . Just seen them twice in London last week, great band .
Thank you for compiling this. Been a big fan of them since the early 2000s I was in that queens concert, my heart was beating in that crowd too :) I screamed my lungs off and called for Carlos' spirit when "The New" started. I agree with the comments about the 4th album, I remember setting the night free on the day of the release to focus on a fully dedicated listen session, I couldn't finish it, the reasons you mentioned came immediately but also the lack of dynamics, I recall getting hearing fatigue all too quickly. Looking forward to Marauder, a lot :)
For anybody wondering, Tidal Wave was the song Paul began to play and it was the first track the band wrote together after Carlos left Truly underrated song, wish they played it live
I think Interpol was much better with Carlos D, but things like that happen with many bands. I met Paul in São Paulo years ago, he was pretty nice and gave me an autograph.
I think Carlos was the best bass player ever, but still my least favourite album from Interpol is Our Love To Admire BY FAR, i personally love Marauder and El Pintor way above OLTA and Antics
@@pollitorsiones I dunno why that shocks me so much. OLTA is by far my favorite album by them, weird how people can have such different views on the same band. But I love their other albums as well.
An American band that sounds British who are from New York and have an international name. The first time I heard them I thought they were British. Their influences are British bands.
Ah never knew Paul was into Hip-Hop. The bass certainly stands out in their sound (it's loud and melodic, not just a boring rhythm helper). It could be a coincidence but it reminds me of those phat bass lines from the golden era of Hip-Hop.
@@bearzdlc2172 Sadly, you are correct. It's typical artist dilemma (movie directors, musicians, writers) you spend so much passion on first project, years and years, then once famous, distributers will release anything you make and the projects speed up and usually get worse.
You asked about other bands you should do a history of. You should do the south Florida band The Holy Terrors which I’m sure you know the significance of.
That’s actually where I’m from and I definitely get the Interpol connection. If I get back to making some videos maybe I could get some local interviews together for that one.
Even though Carlos left the band you can notice they didn't change their essence. As Carlos once said "everyone has an equal say" so influence as well and that makes a band great.
That little moment after Zane Lowe asks whether they gave themselves time to rest and recuperate after the promo and touring for Antics is so telling. Our Love to Admire has a weariness and exhaustion about it that, in hindsight, seems to reflect four people who are running on fumes. That's not to say it isn't a good record - but from the off, it's the aural equivalent of having burned the midnight oil a few times too many.
I found this video just while I was searching for their new single, and I was thinking of suscribing or not...and then you said Untitled was your favorite song from TOTBL...dude, I have a tatoo with the lyrics... SUSCRIBED! :D
I love Carlos going his own way, even though its a big hole in the band. They would be a totally different band without the suits. Nice rundown, thank you.
Thanks a lot! The song at the end is Carlos D's great remix of Public Pervert. It's on the special edition of Antics. On Spotify if you want to hear it.

Meet The Band glad you didn’t. By the way great presentation. I been a fan of them since 2003
Meet The Band but they do have a strokes influence more so than joy division.
They formed a year before The Strokes, but they definitely have similarities. They're both from that same batch of great early 00's NYC bands!
Necessary to inform the listener. The comparison introduced me to Joy Division and it is spot-on. The guitar playing is much like Ricky Wilson of the B-52s as well.
"The New" part just made me smile. So nice to see that a deep cut is consistently seen as one of their best.

I am sure about it. Seen them 5 times and every time was at least great but mostly amazing.
