  • After watching the series, a third time I've decided Mr. Milchick is deserving of a closer look. He's entirely strange and unnerving, which makes for a great villain.

      I absolutely agree; Milchick’s character is acted so perfectly in every possible aspect that I think he was snubbed *because* he blended in so perfectly that he was not considered as an actor as much as a natural part of Lumon, if that makes sense. I’ve been meaning to look up other things I’ve seen him in, or watch a different show of his, because he is so seamlessly Milchick that I have a hard time visualising that actor playing any other role.

The idea is to disorient and add to the feeling of hyperrealism, and to lull the occupants into a dreamlike state. Fwiw, the commenter is correct; the computers and most of the rest of the area in the basement is most reminiscent of the 1980s, including things like Cobel and Milchick’s hairstyles, which are kind of generic 1980s-ish hairstyles (for the 1970s, Milchick would have a bigger Afro). I rewatched the series AGAIN, and once he started dancing I began to laugh delightedly ... then I watched MDR carefully: most of them were into it, especially Helly. I suspect that Milchick's dance moves are employed to provoke delight in childlike people, such as the Innies.
      I know that people use the term "dad dancing" as a pejorative, but that's not how I think of Milchick's participation in the MDE. To me it's more that he was dancing both *for* the Innies, and to get them to dance along with him. I think that's why so many people remark on his performance: that's "come dance with me" dancing.

    There's an interesting theory on the Severance Wiki that proposes that Milchick might be some kind of clone or replicant, seeing as how he performs an insane amount of duties that no single person could ever manage.
    Like he spent an entire work day in the break room with Helly yet this didn't seem to affect his usual schedule of keeping watch on MDR. Plus, if we can assume that he is the Middle Management for other branches on the Severed floor, it might make sense that there are multiple Milchicks at any given point, which would also explain why his name doesn't appear on any list of Severed workers when even Cobel is listed as Severed

Not sure but if you look closely you’ll see compassion (of a sort) in his eyes when dealing with Ms Casey. He doesn’t like how Cobel uses her. I think Milchick knows a whole whole lot about Lumon. Milchick, on the other hand, seems far more robotic, being able to remain steady almost all the time. He doesn’t bend the rules and his moods are less extreme - plus he can switch his mood in an instant. He’s almost like a more mature Ms. Casey, having been "awake" longer. I’m wondering if there’s a difference procedure that isn’t "severing" the person’s. • @ravenlord4
    @ravenlord4 Рік тому +7

    In the end I think that Milchick will be the key to the story. As middle management he is the linchpin between Lumon and the innies. And he is not a throw-away guy. Graner was sent on that risky mission because Milchick was too valuable to be expendable. And when the board dropped the hammer om Cobel, it appears that he was totally spared. And this makes me think that the innie's only hope is to somehow, someway, turn Milchick. They slipped by him once, and for a guy like him, he'll vow that it will never happen again. And as you say he is the complete company guy, so flipping him would be easier said than done. I could see a major plotline being a slow, gradual and necessarily subtle character arc for him. And it would not surprise me if he goes out in some kind of badass and glorious heroic sacrifice and the end of a redemption arc. It just seems like all of the groundwork is being laid for more depth to him. Great video btw :)

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  Рік тому +3

      I can see this happening. IMO someone will have to be turned, and I thought it was going to be Cobel up until the finale, where she sides with Lumon/Eagan over the innies in their jailbreak attempt. There are very strong themes around the idea of worker solidarity in this show, which makes me think that there will be a team-up between the MDR, O&D and someone powerful within Lumon that will turn the tide and bring the board down in the big climax. Milchick would be perfect in that role. Characters like him, completely brainwashed, long-suffering and subservient, are often the ones that have a change of heart and side with the underdog. Totally see this as a possibility.

    So many questions about Milchick and this show overall.
    -Why are there so few people running the place? With Graner gone, and Cobel fired, it actually seems like Milchick is running the whole operation. How can that be? Where is all the management? Where are all the people who built this technology, and who maintains it?
    -Speaking of that, who is the "board"? How many people are on it? We only ever hear one voice, and this seems in keeping with the almost-no-one-works here vibe.
    -How can Cobel be severed? They went out of their way to show her (as Selvig) taking work calls at home.
    -Why is Cobel so concerned with Mark? Why / how does she live right next door to Mark? Why is she so concerned about packages delivered to his door, why does she break into his house, why does she wangle a job as Mark's sister's nanny, etc?
    -Why is Cobel so concerned about the MDR team's innies taking over their outties? She's already been fired! She was so incredibly pissed at them, yet now she's driving 100 MPH to confront Helly?
    -How is Gemma still alive if she died in a car crash? Did Lumon fake her death so they could sever her, and consequently Mark? Again it comes back to Mark...
    -If they faked Gemma's death, how did they convince her to sever? Or did they convince her? Is Gemma chipped? If so, what would happen if she went in the elevator?
    -What happens on the testing floor?

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  Рік тому +2

      Yeah, it seems like middle management is kind of thin given the apparent size of the floor. We know that someone helped Milchick run the OTC on Dylan. It is supposed to require two people to trigger it and Cobel was not one of them, so I guess we're supposed to assume there are more people running the show. Maybe we will see more of the severed floor goons in season two. There's also a pretty wild theory that there is more than one Milchick, but I'm not sold on that one. I covered a lot of big questions in other videos, except for the testing floor one. I haven't explicitly address it yet, but hint around it indirectly.

    It instantly triggered something when you said he looks "from a different time" considering how long Lumon has been around. In the beginning it was assumed the chip only split the personality. Then we found out they can deactivate a personality without activating the other like Ms Casey. And in the finale they briefly show a whole list of other commands they could implement. I believe the boards ultimate goal is a kind of techno immortality. I think the goats are a cloning experiment and the chip is to transfer consciousness from one body to the next but was found to provide a range of other functions. It could be that until the cloning is perfected "the board" can only transfer into near dead bodies, and why they took Mark's wife after the accident. Maybe Milchick is a successful transfer, and all we're seeing is the Milchick "suit" the transfer is wearing.
    Mark's sister's friends are also severed, thats how the board knew Harmony was visiting.

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  Рік тому +4

      Hey, thanks for sharing your theories! I think you are right about the Lumon's endgame here. They are somehow getting a hold of braindead people and using them to host personalities and exist solely within Lumon's facility. I think the goal is twofold. One is, as you said, achieving immortality through severance by transferring the consciousness to another body (I think that's what Papa Eagan meant when he was talking to Helly about "revolving". I think they also want to create a perfect society by altering personalities of the masses (4 temperaments etc.). The first step towards that goal is to normalize the idea of severence with the public, which is why Helly comes to bat for the Eagan's.

    • @hugh_jasso
      @hugh_jasso Рік тому +3

      @@nautilusfiles indeed, with that one line Eagan revealed a potential plot for a third season. We know there are already severed in the "outer" world shown with the senators wife and i think Mark's sisters' friends are also severed and don't know it. They have ridiculous takes about the world similar to the ridiculous takes the innies have about other departments and both groups find Ricken's absurd book so profound and motivational, and very childlike. In episode 1 they talk about a "post-food" world but the next scene Marks sister makes him a sandwich, so food exists but do they 'not eat' or 'not remember' eating? I think they could be security to monitor the outies or an outie experiment themselves. Petey's map also including houses i was thinking there could be more houses literally in the building like Eagan's or it could be the housing development for the experiment outies. But that's definitely how i think the board found out Cobel was visiting Mark's sister.

    The closet scene leads me to believe Dylan's outie knows Milchick . They may be related or roommates. 1) he told the son to count and the son counted. it didn't come across that the son was fearlful in the closet or that Michick was a stranger to him. 2) When he told Graner to "turn it off", Dylan was reverted back to his outie when he said to Milchick Are we done here? So what was Dylan's outie's reason for being in the closet with Milchick in the first place? I'm sure we'll find out more about Milchick in season 2.

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  Рік тому +5

      I think part of this is probably true. I think he knows him as "that guy from work who got me oriented for my procedure". O-Dylan would probably already be familiar with Milchick pre-severeance, as in the case with Helly. On the night of the override, it's likely that he showed up at the house, told O-Dylan he needed to talk to the innie in private, Dylan complied and waited in the closet. I don't think there would be any reason for Dylan's kid to fear Milchick because his father would have told him it's cool. If the kid had said something to Milchick that hinted at familiarity then, maybe? Being related is not outside the realm of plausible, but I don't think we're given strong enough evidence to think that.
      Milchick was very uncomfortable with Cobel's experiments involving putting Mark and Ms. Casey in the same room, just to see if severance can be broken. If he and Dylan were roomies he probably would not like the idea of working so closely with him either. Just my opinion, ofc, anything is possible at this point!

    When you mentioned that Milchik is one of (Helly, yellow dress) the only ones who ever wears short sleeves it made me think of something I neverr even thought of which is what the hell is the temperature at Lumon? No one ever complains of it being either too hot, too stuffy or too cold, which anyone who's ever worked in an office specifically and has a human body knows is unrealistic to say the least. There are absolutely no visible AC units or vents...so is there even an air duct system? How do they even regulate fresh air? They're in a glorified basement basically..there's something very strange with the bodies in this show, not just the minds, similar to the whole food situation and how people in general just seem largely unconcerned with it...
    also at this point I don't see how he can't be some sort of clone/in-organic life form..he is literally perfectly made for this specific weird and inhumanely demanding job, to the point of being seemingly irreplaceable. This would explain his build and shirt sleeves. It reminds me of Blade Runners replicants or Detroit Becomes Human's androids; he is made to look like what he's supposed to be which is strong, capable and scary.

      Of, course I could be completely wrong. All we can do is make assumptions based on what we think we see, and the clues given. We won't know for sure until we get more info. Cobel is weirdly more "likeable" because you KNOW there's A LOT there in her past that's made her the way she is and possibly blind to how messed up severance is (plus...she WAS severed, so...). Milchick seems to be doing what he does just to...earn a living? Maybe. Also, maybe that's commentary on how our culture often forces folks to take jobs they may not agree with in order for financial security and comfort (where else can you work in that town, but for Lumen or Lumen-owned businesses?). When Milchick woke Dylan up at home, I think he was going rogue, the one time we saw him do something risky. It's an emergency protocol they can use, but he didn't run it by Harmony - who outranks him, it would appear. He panicked, one of the only times he lost his cool all season. And he screwed up big time, trusting that kid not to come in and expose the truth to innie Dylan about his existence. So Dylan was able to escape consequences for attacking him because when he threatened to go to Cobel, Dylan called his bluff. I took that to mean that not only did he screw up with the kid, he didn't have authorization to use the emergency protocol. Either that or he got orders from over her head and she would've been pissed to be kept out of the loop. He must have had 2 people flipping the switches to wake up Dylan remotely - wonder who did it? We literally never saw any other supervisory or security people working there except Milchick, Cobel, and Graner. (Sidebar - still wanna know WTF was so earth-shattering about) those damn cards that necessitated taking that risk! None of what they're actually working on there makes sense but I love it 😂)

    I agree that the short sleeves(and the body hugging turtle neck in the dance episode) are there to show you that you DON'T WANNA FUCK WITH MILCHEK. He also breaks people's personal space bubbles constantly. He's supposed to be the Stick AND the bringer of the Carrot. It's actually pretty clever.

    the most interesting thing is that the Dylan incident is the only time that milchick is wearing a long sleeve shirt (i think) in the show...

    I would like to see how Milchick behaves outside of Lumon. I find him to be terrifying; that creepy smile and seriousness makes him very hard to predict.

    Everything in the office looks like in the 60s/70s - and Milchik, too - he looks like a cop from then because he *IS* one - he polices the employees - he makes sure they comply to the (company) rules, and enforces them - with force, if necessay.

    Dude, my favorite character in this series. He has... just so much presence and impact. I really like the guy and the character, he definitely brings him to life and I can see how a lotta people at my office wanna be like him without knowing he exists, but without his finesse. And they are all pain in the asses, while Milchick and the guy that plays him are... refined. As such, I don't hate him, he is a job well done and a great result of effort. I'd get a coffee with the guy for 30 mins and ask him to be Milchick and I will just... try and go along. Plz no Break room.

      He's quietly been one of the best played roles in the entire series so far. I love/hate him!
