      @@nautilusfiles I agree! Milchick's bomb ass dancing took over that scene so much that a lot of ppl did not even notice how they all held each other around Dylan after he lost his shit. It was an iconic moment in my opinion. Then when Milchick threatened Dylan and Dylan was all like "bring it on, I'd love to go talk about this.." I fucking loved his response. But the thing I find ODD AF. Why did Milchick have to even use the OT protocol to begin with over a stupid card? Why could he not have waited until the next day to ask Dylan? And why did he do it behind Cobel's back? What is the significance of that card??

    • @tylergee3043
      @tylergee3043 Рік тому +7

      @@mothermakeup7481 maybe code detectors don't work on lumon property since it probably has to be moved in and out, and they suspected he snuck out company product, and made a huge mistake using the OTP, Milchik might have gone around Cobel because managing them is his responsibility

    • @Zernium
      @Zernium Рік тому +8

      @@tylergee3043 I suspect that using the OT protocol was something that Milchick did just to cover his own ass, and he did it without Cobel's knowledge. It was a pretty stupid thing to do, but he consistently underestimates the innies' intelligence and capabilities throughout the show, and didn't realize that letting one of them know about the OT protocol would galvanize them to try using it. (Additionally, who exactly was it that was activating it back at the office? There was definitely at least one person back at the office who Milchick was talking to, more likely two, but we don't see them and there no obvious candidates for who it could be.)
      What I'm more confused about is why Dylan took the card in the first place? At first I assumed he was going to use it as evidence that O&D was plotting against MDR, but he never brings it up to the others, and he just leaves it behind a toilet for some reason.

    My own theory is that Dylan was bringing stress from work to his home and maybe taking it out on his family, so he went severed to avoid lashing out at them more. Great video btw!

  • @TravisR1982
    @TravisR1982 Рік тому +48

    My thought is that he can't leave work at work by nature, and that is why he decided to sever. He is intelligent, good at work, really driven, even obsessive...the drawback to this is that he tends to take it home with him. For someone with 3 kids and a wife, it will be very problematic. Money may be a factor. But to sever at 5 PM is a blessing for a family man.

  • @ravenlord4
    @ravenlord4 Рік тому +92

    My favorite line from the show thus far is Dylan's "F*** you, Mr. Milchick!" Only Dylan would curse someone while still deferentially using their professional title :)
    And one big observation is that they did not wipe Dylan's memory after his OTC. I guess that means that they either can't, or they can't do so with just selective memories, or that they didn't bother because they did not think of Dylan as a threat. I am curious if this will come up in season 2.
    And again, wonderful review. Dylan is indeed MVP!

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  Рік тому +10

      Hey, raven! Thanks for stopping by! Dylan has already solidified himself as an icon with that one line. Good question about the OTC aftermath. I wonder... obviously there was at least one other person required to trigger the OTC, but Cobel apparently never found out about it because Milchick and the mystery person(s) wanted to cover their @sses? Changing Dylan's severance status wasn't an option?

    • @ravenlord4
      @ravenlord4 Рік тому +4

      @@nautilusfiles Oh that's right -- I forgot that Cobel was not in the loop. Now that opens up a whole new can of worms for when the Board wants to know why MDR was even aware of OTC, let alone how to activate it, hee hee :)

    • @ma1ist
      @ma1ist Рік тому +5

      i don't think they can selectively wipe.

    A detail that nobody mentions... the delts
    Everyone remembers the scene where Dylan is dreaming out loud about his outie, and said that his "delts are ridiculous" and that he does muscle shows for sure.
    I wonder if it's intentional foreshadowing to the time that he held down two distantly placed buttons to activate the remote severance of the other 3. That position (arms held outward and upward for a long period of time) is the ultimate delt exercise, and holding out his arms like that for like 20 minutes is literally a world-class feat... and I'm sure his ridiculous delts were ON FIRE the whole time!

  • @JC-yy8iv
    @JC-yy8iv Рік тому +16

    You know, his enthusiasm for the trinkets is funny on one level, and it also caused me to really reflect deeply on how empty the innies’ lives are, to the point that they have to find meaning and motivation in such small things.
    I’ve spent time in a couple varieties of secure facility, I remember in the bleakest, most stimulation-free one I was ever in, they would make (decaf) coffee every few hours and give it to us, and in between every coffee break you’d just sit there, watching the clock, waiting for the next coffee, it was like my brain had to create some kind of anticipation and reward. Of course then you get the coffee and it’s nothing, you just start the clock over.
    But in the absence of looking forward to, say, the end of your day in any real way, or going home, the mind leaps at the chance to divide the hours, to assign structure or a point of any kind.
    Anyway my point is that including that detail right at the beginning, his obsession with those things, I felt it was a very clever way to get me thinking about the bleakness of their existence.

      Or he has more than one child at home.

    • @nothinglikeburntvag
      @nothinglikeburntvag Рік тому +4

      This is what I was wondering. Maybe it was a loss or- bear with me here- maybe Dylan's outtie shook his child. The reason I even consider that possibility (and I don't necessarily think that I'm correct) is because the MDR team loosely corresponds with the four temperaments: Mark being woe in his grief for Gemma, Helly being frolic for her idealistic faith in Lumon, Irving being dread due to the fear of what he could uncover during his investigation, which could leave Dylan with malice. Dylan doesn't seem like a malicious guy in general, but shaking a baby is certainly an act of malice and it's sadly common for overtired, overwhelmed new parents to shake their babies. If Dylan shook his baby and it ended up suffering from SBS or death, I could definitely see Dylan undergoing severance in order to escape the internal hell that would cause.
      Or I'm just a silly head. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • @ProudestMonkey222
      @ProudestMonkey222 Рік тому +5

      I think Dylan got cheated on and divorced his wife, getting his children as a single dad bc she left. When he instructs Helly to think about something she truly feels sorry for he mentions his outie “bangjng milfs…but then feeling sorry for the guy”. And as hard as the company tried to get him alone they couldn’t separate him from dad duties to retrieve the lost item. Not sure if Milchik is lying about 3 kids but that would make sense for him to take high pay at Lumon to justify the child support expenses and help sever his memories of loss like Mark did

      @matthewlennon6289 3 місяці тому +1

Introduced as the guy in the office who is all about the rewards, cynical, and seemingly rather selfish and materialistic. Yet his emergence as a hero is totally believable. He applies his determination and work ethic to the goals of the group in opposition to Lumon, once he is given a reason to do so (for his family outside, and his refiner family inside). I’m so curious to learn more about Dylan’s outie - who the heck is this guy?!

    The last theory - that he’s just trying to get away from his stressful family life - resonates most with me. I could see outtie Dylan having a similar dreamer-quality to innie Dylan. Maybe the outtie likes not knowing what he does all day, and just imagining that whatever it is is top secret and therefore kind of glamorous, or “mysterious and important”
    I don’t read more into the “we’re here because we’re not all there” than it being about them being severed, part of a person.

    One thing I wish you would have gone more into is his conspiratorial nature. Despite not believing in the Lumon cult philosophy, he firmly believes that O&D are evil and committed a violent coup. That's a pretty insane belief coming from the one who is supposed to be rational and reward driven. That belief compells him so much that he brazenly insults the O&D team and does all he can to prevent Irving from being friends with Burt, including locking Burt in a room. So although the Lumon philosophy that Irving was indoctrinated by never got to Dylan, other Lumon propagandas did get to him. It's also surprising that he alone believes in this mortal feud between MDR and O&D. Mark denies that O&D is a violent entity in the same way Dylan dismisses Irving's obsession with the Eagan lore.
    Dylan also thinks the numbers are related to getting rid of the eels in the sea because of an apocalypse. That's also pretty crazy thinking. Some of the things he believes about the outside world are so ridiculous that it's not clear to me whether he is earnest and naive or dry and sarcastic.
    I will also say that Dylan was one of my least favorite characters in the show and I don't really get why everyone loves him so much. Not to say I didn't enjoy this video, as I do all of yours.

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  Рік тому +1

      I think the whole O&D conspiracy thing was cooked up by management to keep the departments suspicious of one another. Lumon is probably afraid of them conspiring or the formation of an uprising from within. It is interesting that Dylan fully believes the propaganda while the others don't, though. Perhaps he is just not as trusting of a person as most. His initial distrust of Helly is a good example of that.

    All innies are slaves. They do the work but the outtie gets the paycheck. The innies get two tokens a day for snacks and they literally know no life except work - they get in the elevator at the end of the day, the door closes and when it opens a split second later its the next day and they are right back to work. Its like Helly trying to get out of the stairwell. I'm surprised Mark knew it was a weekend.

    My initial take on Dylan, given that he's obviously a workaholic of sorts, was that he chose to get severed so he could leave work at work and enjoy more quality time with his kids. I'm not sure, after my third watch of S1, if this interpretation still holds water, especially given the proximity to trauma theory for MDR folks.

    Zach Cherry is awesome! I loved him in You, the way he interacted with Joe Goldberg. Dylan is a true equal with the other three MDR workers, and, despite how reward-driven he appears on the surface, he truly cares about his coworkers.
    Speculating on his backstory, my guess is that Dylan lost a child. Perhaps an infant, which is why they have him hear a crying baby when he’s in the break room. He might have forgotten to check on the baby or left the baby somewhere while he was doing something to reward himself - like eating a big plate of delicious waffles. His guilt over the death of the infant was so overwhelming that he chose to be severed so he could escape the bad feelings for eight hours a day.
    He strikes me as a guy who tends to feel like an outsider, but who wants desperately to belong. He uses sarcasm to push others away even as he longs to be friends with them. (I’m pretty much exactly like him in that respect.) He’s incredibly loyal to his "family" and will do anything to protect them. He really wants to do the right thing and he also yearns to be seen as a hero - which he is at the end of the season. He’s the guy who makes it all happen.

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  Рік тому +3

      I share a similar opinion of him, and I think the lost child theory is a good one. A haunting memory of a crying child is likely related to some deeply traumatic event related to his own kid. Dylan seems like the classic workaholic bro and that could very well the attitude that caused his tragedy on the outside.

    4 mdr, 4 temper
    mark is there because of woe, to escape his sadness.
    irving is there for malice to destroy lumon from inside trying to force himself to go in test room by influencing his subconscient with paintings.
    Helena is there for frolic she goes there happily wanting the approval of her father.
    Dylan is probably going there out of dread. I assume one of his child is sick and lumon provides healthcare technology or benefit in some way.

    I’m late to the Severance game, but I’m hooked now. Something I don’t feel I’ve really seen addressed in this and other videos about Dylan and Milchick is why outie Dylan didn’t seem at all surprised that Milcheck was in his house (unless they are partners, which I find unlikely), or question why he was there.

  • @HeatherHolt
    @HeatherHolt Рік тому +2

    I wonder if things would have changed had Helly not shown up. Since Petey was already reaching out to oMark, would iMark have eventually started questioning things for some reason? Would he have ever found the map. That timing tho on Helly arriving and iMark finding the map because he changed the photo and Petey showing up around oMark at the same time.

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  Рік тому +1

      Hey, Heather! Good question. Mark seemed to have no idea Petey was having doubts or was having trouble at work, which I find strange. Dan Erickson made it seem like Helly was destined for MDR, and if Lumon had big plans to use her in their PR stunt to get legislation passed, you would think it would be time sensitive. Somebody had to cut from MDR. I don't know how that would have worked had he not went and got himself deprogrammed? Unless he was on his way out for other reasons and his reintegration was a preemptive decision to get out before they "fire" him?
      Reghabi and Cobel both mention that there is group of resistors within Lumon that are trying to bring the org down. Petey was likely one of them, but there are probably others we aren't aware of yet.

    Another excellent video! Thanks! I love these deep dive character analysis vids. I didn't take D hearing a crying baby as trauma related to his kids but that's interesting. I know Milchick told him he had 2? more kids. I was thinking maybe one was an infant. Obviously his kids were out the night of the Overtime Contingency. Curious question about that though is _How would Milchick know this?_ (Know that they would be out. Not that he has more kids).

      @@nautilusfiles "TBH, I don't know that I believe they exist" Oh wow, that's crazy! I never thought of that but with this show you really have to think of it all because they could go anywhere with this story. You think they could possibly be Severance subjects? And, this is why he wouldn't have cared if they witnessed this or not? We still have that nagging question we were talking about so many videos ago - that (why) Dylan's child wasn't afraid of Milchick. He didn't seem alarmed at all, and more importantly he "listened" to Milchick's directions to "sit and count."

    • @nautilusfiles
      @nautilusfiles  Рік тому +1

      @@TrishD33LGK yeah, exactly. That could be it. I think that whole town is full of severed and unsevered that work for Lumon and they might have whole households involved. I would not be surprised if Dylan's partner works in Lumon and might even be someone we've seen already. His kid's non reaction to Milchick is weird tho, and I still don't have an answer for that one. Best guess is he's familiar with Milchick, like we said, because of the neighbors theory. Cobel lives next to an employee, so it could be that M does too.
      As for the other kids, I wonder if Milchick told him that to get him to open the door, knowing that his kid was the reason for his mutiny in the first place. Just offer him more kids lol. He would have said anything. If those kids are real, I bet they are the ones he heard crying in the breakroom. Something happened to them, and it's related to why he chose to be severed.
