What a weird thing going on there with the fuel im seeing quite a bit of blue smoke coming out the exhaust it might be oil fouling, but then again old engines do smoke a little might be worth having the head off and lapping the valves that would be fun for mrs mancave anyhow , might possibly be valve clearances, might even be the governor rod as you aint had that off yet. I also did some research on this engine and apparently you fill the bowl with petrol and have the fuel tank full of paraffin/heating oil and when she warms up you open the fuel tank needle therefore converting it to run on heating oil/paraffin so you wernt wrong the other day it is a petrol paraffin engine. Great vid as always 👍
It’s good to see mrs man cave getting involved but the big question is did you enjoy yourself mrs man cave is it something you wants to do again see you soon 👍👏👏
Hi,just an idea. Something to do with advance and retard, as used manually on older engines, because there is adjustment on your mag. One setting to start then adjust to run. Many thanks to you both
That drip could be from the front fuel mixture wheel. Should there be a little fibre washer that buffs upto the body between the brass part and the body
Hmm... That engine is like me. Old, cantankerous and works when it feels like it. Which isn't very much or very often. Patronise it, give it a mug of Horlicks, send it to bed early and hope that it gets out on the right side in the morning... It was running so well.........
That sounds lovely I think alot of us have left the handle on in the past, at least it wasn't on the rally field or it could put up the shows insurance quotes 😂
The hole in the carb intake is probably to allow you to catch the fuel drips if the carb floods, otherwise the excess fuel would run underneath the engine. You are right to be careful with the starting handle, I once saw one fly off a Lister HR 2 gen set engine, it knocked a 9" concrete block straight out of the engine house wall. The guy starting the engine was inexperienced. When I saw the handle swinging loose I ran out the door dragging the other fellow after me. 20 seconds later the handle came out through the wall. I also met a trawlerman who started an auxiliary winch engine in the forepeak with a sticky handle while he was alone on the boat. The handle pulled out of his hand, He couldn't reach the stop lever and he coudnt get out past the swinging handle. He cowered in a corner for 12 hours until the engine ran out of fuel. He went a bit crazy that day.
What draws the fuel from the tank? Airflow through the carb? The tank obviously isn't pressurised and there's no pump so maybe the port inside the carb is restricted or the tap at the front of the engine has an air leak and draws air more than fuel? Check for air leaks around the outside of the tap body.
Holy Moses, I had visions of that handle flying off into the wide blue yonder! - I wonder if that's where we get that saying from, about flying off the handle? Especially if Charlie Farmer was getting a bit airiated with his engine, gave it an extra strong swing over and flew off the handle ....... Anyway, that's definitely running a lot better, and d'you know, that engine could just be able to run on paraffin. If it runs twenty minutes on just primer bowlful, you might get away with putting paraffin in the main tank and switching over once the petrol is about gone, and the engine is warmed up? Just a thought. Now then, you two just look after little Connie, she's been watching over this engine saga, sitting there in the border and catching all the diesel and muck and dust you throw at her - She's obviously a sturdy little cat! Annie Hoos, will you be showing the Crossley this year?
as "mrs mancave" is getting involved (I really like it) maybe a "camera-handle--idea" ... Let her hold the cam in such a way that we are seeing better what's going on???
I used the wrong handle to start a cement mixer one morning and it came off the shaft, had to have all that was left of my front teeth removed and the jaw bone re set.
Also with the handles , I've never had an engine kick back unless it has a impulse mag , I always hold the handles thumb around and pull up never has one break my thumb before with my way of starting and you can pull the handle off easy without it sticking😎
It stopped at as it ran out of fuel at 33:50 as the pickup pipe doesn't reach the bottom they have to be half full to actually suck the fuel up as no check valve
It's great to see Mrs Mancave helping you with this engine. I know this is an older video, but still great to see her in action
Hay well done 👏 she runs lovely what a fabulous result , more of this please 👍👍
I like how you get along so well on camera. It will be fun to watch as you grow together as a UA-camr couple

Well done Mrs mancave she sounds very nice the rhythm is spot on
Love the fact that you two are working together and having a laugh doing it ... jealous lol
Nice to see Mrs man cave hands on getting to know her engine.
that valve clearance is ginormous!
thats how they are on those crossley engines due to how they are set up with one rocker and one cam working both valves.
That sounds bloody beautiful
Excellent, got there at last you two. Bit of perseverance and head scratching and all's well.
Sounds sweet enough ! well done Mrs man cave ,be careful with that handle do you a mischief !!

it,s hard to get good helpers and you,v got a good one

Love the sound of them little chuggers wish i still had mine

Like I always say about my old motor bike.. if it ain't broke, keep fixing it until it is...
good job you got her started
and the engine too...

Not often you find a good keen woman with ears.
At 34:00, I see a fuel like under the Carb. You should also count the number of turns for the few control, so you'll know where to start!
as "mrs mancave" is getting involved (I really like it) maybe a "camera-handle--idea" ... Let her hold the cam in such a way that we are seeing better what's going on???
Are you going for a record of double entendres? 😂😂
Mrs Mancave's new sewing-machine motor..................
I think I heard " Lucy lefty!, righty tighty!" on the tannoy
yesi like your videos
Its the electrical when the mag gets hot it stops sparking
I used the wrong handle to start a cement mixer one morning and it came off the shaft, had to have all that was left of my front teeth removed and the jaw bone re set.
Hi go girl my name is trevor Jones I have a buzzercot 11/2hp 50 year not going and then Burt in bushfire now going like a charm
possibly ripped the new gasket on fitting it ?
Great job . Just needed a woman's touch
No gloves Mrs Mancave? ❤
is there any timing with the magneto
What’s the ethanol content in the gas over there?
Nice engine 🤠
Are you sure you’re not Welsh Mancave??? Because every time you put something back together you get a Leek(leak) 🤣😂
How come mr had gloves but mrs don’t ? There seem to be something going on, has mr man cave gotten soft hands over winter?
Mancave and wo-mancave
Just thinking - I heard you say in first video there was an advance & retard switch on the mag - would advancing it make it start easier ?
You cant overfill the bowl unless you actually psychically overfill it lol, also turn the needle a quarter out not lots of turns
Also with the handles , I've never had an engine kick back unless it has a impulse mag , I always hold the handles thumb around and pull up never has one break my thumb before with my way of starting and you can pull the handle off easy without it sticking😎

Hi, I like your engine.
I've sent you some official starting instructions via messenger.
