I know you probably know this, but an AC powered lamp over a lathe or mill can make the chuck or mill appear stationary at certain revs.. Pleas be careful. (it should be DC.)

Leave it, if you clean and paint it then it becomes just another ambiguous Lister D, this will cause more interest leaving as found.

next time your at an auction try and pickup a decent socket set with some spark plug sockets. an adjustable wrench on a spark plug definitely a no no.

I'm not that surprised. When I saw the plug and points, I said to myself - It'll start right up, and so it did.

If you want to know what's on the plates without cleaning, try the tracing paper and charcoal method like they do on old gravestones, just a thought but it might work .

If you don't remove the crud bits of it will off in your van every time you go down a bumpy lane, and moving it around will be a messy business. Take a photo of it in its current condition but then just give it a gentle clean. This venerable machine is not a candidate for a concours prize.

I would never leave any engine covered in crud, do not paint it but there is always to great a chance that crud will work it's way into the engine.

Leave it as it is including the brackets. plenty of restored ones around, but few left as they were when they worked for a living.

Depends what you want to do with it. If you're going to rally it, then making what looks like a heap of junk spring into life would certainly be a talking point. You could of course get another D in good order for a "before" and "after" look. Personally I'd show it "as is" to start with, and then maybe dolly it up.

Understatement of the day” she ain’t got too much compression”. More likely no one at all from the way it turned over.😁 I vote clean it up , for one thing every time you move it to a show you will get covered in grease n rust,it deserves to be cleaned and painted at least. Great job 👍

Adam leave as is.There are too many that look clean and shiny. You know yourself you have been to shows and everyone has been painted. So my choice is leave as is😀

Leave it in its work clothes. I have a Fairbanks dishpan that I refused to do any clean up on because I was able to get it freed up and running at its last settings. So another vote for work clothes! 👍🏻

Leave all the muck on it Adam! That makes it more "as found barn find", Also, it's not worth much, possibly even a bit more dirty than cleaned, so why waste time, elbow grease and degreaser cleaning it up! take the governor rod off the other engine, it'll look the part then. I'd even be tempted to leave most of the dexion on it, maybe just cut off the bit that sticks out. Find an old rusty exhaust for it.

Brilliant!! Don’t touch it. Fix the governor rod by turning a brass sleeve down on your Myford n flush the petrol tank out. Then, turn the other scrap lister D into a cutaway engine and run that from old crusty 😃.
