- In this video, I'm going to show you my favorite tool for MacOS - Raycast - and how it has refined my entire workflow. I'll go over some of the amazing features that are included in the free version, like quickly opening apps, managing windows, taking notes, and even running scripts. Plus, I'll show you some of the custom script commands I've built. #Coursera, #CourseraPartner @Coursera

FYI - Rectangle is free and very concise window manager, also great to pair it with also free AltTab (which is must have for multi-display setup)
Great alternative!
Or…Raycast now handles the same/similar window management natively, which is kinda cool!
i use both of these applications and can confirm that they are a game changer for multi-screen productivity.
I just use keyboard shortcuts built into MacOS.
I will take a look at AltTab
Great video! I have been using Raycast for the last 4 months and it has changed the way I interact with my mac. The tasks I do the most are open different chrome profiles (using a mac shortcut), open other apps, search on finder, toggle my output audio devices, use the clipboard history, create quick zoom meetings, launch upcoming zoom meetings, and kill processes. I've set up a few quick links as well but didn't try the query, which I'm going to try right now.
Anyone recall Quicksilver? The workflow is 1) you search and find something 2) you search and select a relevant action to apply. For example, this is crazy handy for quickly finding a text file and opening it for editing it in an app of your choice, or copying it or whatever you want. I’ve never seen another quick access tool do it quite this way, it’s super clever.
This reminded video reminded me of Quicksilver and I was pleasantly surprised to see it’s still developed.
Yes! That used to be the first thing I would install…
I was surprised to find out how powerful Raycast is. It's mindblowing. Thank you for your helpful tips.
Apple hasn't done anything about window management like MS because MS holds the patent "Microsoft holds several patents related to window snapping, but one notable patent is US Patent No. 8301779, titled "Method and System for Arranging on-screen Windows."
that would explain a lot. but if thats the case why there are so many external applications sold through App Store implementing this functionality? Are they paying patent charges to MS? hard to believe in that..
There's nothing stopping apple from using some other method for snap there are lot of apps that implement this
I fully replaced alfred for raycast, the free tier is insane.
it shines when you add extensions, add a shortcut for a command and boom.
here some examples of I use:
a shortcut to show recently open folders in visual code and open a new one is quicker than open the terminal and writing code path
a shortcut to search tabs already in google chrome, since i have many tabs open, i can quick search for a tab and open super quick..
a shortcut to open process by ports, and kill the processes. quicker than open the terminal listing the processes and kill -9
pretty much you can make it quicker any two more clicks or a terminal command in your computer to a single shortcut in your keyboard.
Really enjoyed this video. Your other videos on Obsidian and Warp got me hooked! Thank you.
Awesome, thank you!
Nice please more of it!
very well explained. thank you sir
Thanks!
I've recently seen there's now an Obsidian extension and an Obsidian smart capture extension that I can't wait to try out!
I personally love AlfredApp for my work laptop. You should do a video on that
Thanks for making this video. I recently bought my first Mac and I'm now looking for all the cool tools I could try. I'm always a little bit (maybe too) cautious about privacy when it gets to new tools and I'm slightly concerned using Raycast, I read a little bit of their privacy policy:
"We have a legitimate interest in processing your personal data for promotional purposes (see table above). This means we do not usually need your consent to send you promotional communications."
I heard Alfred is good too. Maybe that's also a good alternative. Will try that first.
Thanks for watching! :)
Amazing video! Is there a config file to backup with all the customization?
I have been using Alfred. Like it a ton. I hate subscriptions so anytime I can dodge one I will.
Everything shown in this video is free. Only the Chat GPT integration, custom themes and Cloud Sync are paid
And ot make sense since cloud hosting and openai api are not free
This is really cool
Great app, switched spotlight with it!
Nice!
i wait for your vids man😁
I‘m about to switch to Mac from Linux and Raycast is exactly what macos needs!
Awesome!
Hey,
can I customize system preferences from this app
( you know, like opening different settings ) .
Great tool, quite life changing, can you make a video for other mac applications or cool settings? thanks, I really enjoy your videos
Thanks! I'll do some Mac videos occasionally, but it's not the main focus.
Is it a good idea to use Raycast on a MacBookPro 2015 (Core i5 2 cores 8 GB RAM), does it consume a lot of resources? I hope someone can answer this question.
Great review. I think the term missing from this description is "command palette".
Thanks :)
Awesome video! I love raycast, it's mind blowing, btw, Apple can't apply the window management like windows, cause windows has this "feature" patented or whatever you call it, so apple can't "officially" do it, that's where third party apps come in D:
Thank you 🙏
Gotta try this Raycast thing out.. its like Spotlight++
Also yeah I have that EXACT problem with having tens of homelab IAC repos rofl
Awesome! Take a look at my scripts repo on GitHub, maybe the script helps you out a bit :D
Appreciating the PAPA bracelet.
😍
Where can I get that awesome Matrix screensaver you got going there :)?
It’s just a simple „cmatrix“ in the terminal :)
love the mandalorian T-shirt😁
thanks! it's such an amazing show :D
For scripts, I’m a big fan of Hammerspoon. It’s open source and more powerful than Raycast. Like auto hotkey for macOS
+ scripted in Lua which has a simple syntax
I prefer using Alfred over Raycast because Alfred follows a one-time purchase model, which I find more suitable for a tool that doesn't directly generate income for me. Unlike Raycast, which requires a subscription, Alfred allows me to buy it once per version and be done with it.
I believe the monthly subscription plan is worth it. If time is money and Raycast helps you achieve a lot more in less time, you can say that it is indeed directly generating wealth for you. As an ex-Alfred user, consider that even the basic free version of Raycast is already better than Alfred!
Old time Alfred power user here … I am not sure raycast is fundamentally better than Alfred …. The subscription model doesn’t help my decision to switch to raycast here
Most, if not all, of the Raycast functions are completely free!
8:55 manchmal comfortable
BTW, Tiles for Mac OS X window management is great and free also...
Thanks! I'll have a look at it :)
@@christianlempa Can install with Brew also...
The app it's cool. The "bad" for me its the suscription model. It's difficult for me justify almost $100 yearly. For me it's a better deal Alfred with powerpack. Cool video!
It has freemium option. I am pretty sure it is good enough.
i’m also bummed about the subscription. But honestly it works fine for me and I don’t care too much about the customizable ui
Everything highlighted in this video (and much more that hasn't) is in the free version of Raycast
Only the raycast ai(wich is only like the chat gpt not the smart features like calculator etc) and changing the theme is paid, everything else is free
As an ex-Alfred user, I tell you that even the basic free version of Raycast is already better than Alfred!
Need this for windows…any suggestions?
Not found sth like this for windows unfortunately :(
It's not as good by comparison, but PowerToys Run has a few similar features. It's not nearly as extendable or feature rich.
So it's something like Alfred (alfredapp)?
Imagine Alfred but 1 million times better
@@rmdashrfv If that is so . I have to check it out :)
@@rmdashrfv nope, 1 million times slower and $8 p.m. for the useful stuff
👏
is there something similar for Linux? Why does rofi not have this?
Don't know what's available on Linux :/
Höre ich da deutsch? Btw sehr hilfreich
Danke dir :D
I wish you had told some cons too
Alfred still looks better though, a comparison would be great
Just sell me the software not some BS subscription!
The subscription its really optional(just for raycastAI wich is like a chatgpt and to change the theme basically ) the main raycast functionality and extensions are free
Your English is fantastic, except for the pronunciation of "parameter"🤪
Haha thanks :D
isn't this just a rip off of alfred?
Rectangle is free; makes MacOS suck a little less for Windows management. Raycast looks pointless, just a toy made to shuck to influencers for some quick cash. Hard pass for me.
