agreed, but with the exception of that robert hood record. that was a curveball. could've even figured he might go w/ a craig leon or, even more likely, a YMO record, but was quite suprised in that final choice. that fellow-dave, ...what a dude :)
The reason Animal Collective sounds so indescribable is because Avey Tare is influenced by so many obscure sounds from so many eras. What's crazy though is that you can hear a ton of Animal Collectives sound traits in the songs played in this video.
The reason I fell in love with them is because their sound is very unique and immediately recognizable, yet at the same time no two songs are ever remotely the same.
One of my all-time favorite artists. I got the chance to meet him a few months ago. Super sweet guy and you can tell he just absolutely loves what he does.
I saw them open for Icelandic band Mum at a bar in Portland around 2003, the audience haaaated them, and animal collective could tell and were pissed. That didn’t stop them from playing all out, my friend and I thought they were amazing and were pretty blown away. Anyway when he mentioned that in passing I knew exactly what he was taking about ;p
@@ThoughtDeposit Same! I saw them here in Chile when they were playing Sung Tongs (I think it was only him and Panda Bear) and they looked kinda pissed. I think people didn't like them very much and I was there losing my mind :( it was kind of a shame that they didn't play anything from other albums but ah well.
@@ThoughtDeposit he was married to the singer of mum. Its sad they never got the fan base & recognition they deserved like radiohead who i consider them to be equal caliber 😢
This is what I love everything Animal Collective. They open up your mind to music and gets you out of that tunnel vision of what we’re used to hearing around us.
Initially watched this video about a year ago. Since then, I've listened to nearly all of them (not the train recordings, sadly) and they're fantastic. In particular, I found the Jon Hassell record to be captivating--as well as his other works.
Man this means so much to me right now. Always been a huge fan of Animal Collective, and Saturday’s has been a daily listen since Avery Tate dropped it ❤️
This guy is my hero! You just know that he goes home, pours himself a glass of water, becomes mesmerised by the sound of the running tap and thinks, "This could be the start of a great song". The day AnCo or the respective singers stop making music is the day I might just end it.
I’ve seen so many of these videos over the years and, not a knock on anyone at all, it always feels like they’re buying records *for* the video. This feels different, like Portner just went record shopping for himself and met up with you afterward. I don’t know how to articulate it but it feels different from other What’s In My Bags. This guy really knows and loves music!
Does anyone else remember the Napster days when there were tracks mislabeled and stuff like Popcorn was credited to Aphex Twin and or Jean Michelle Jarre or any combinations like "Aphex twin Luke Vibert Nobukazu Takemura"? Kinda weird and not always great circumstance of sharing 'pirated' files, they didn't have to be labeled correctly!
LOL I remember downloading a lot of "Aphex Twin / Luke Vibert", "Squarepusher / Luke Vibert", "The Album Leaf / Luke Vibert", "Autechre / Luke Vibert".. I think every file with "Luke Vibert" was mislabeled hahahaha wtf
Just so you know how deep the Beach Boys influence runs in Animal Collective, a sample from Mister D's Machines (the train album he mentions) was used on the last song of Pet Sounds; Caroline, No.
Dave Portner seems like such a G. I saw him perform in San Diego earlier this year and I totally fangirled and thanked him after the show as he put his pedals away. What a cool guy. Wish I could find a friend like that to swap music with.
If you listen to and are influenced by the most obscure records on earth… including a 2 track Japanese screamer and train sounds… it might come out sounding like Brian Wilsons dreams. Awesome

Their lyrics are usually good vibey and wholesome. I like that about Animal Collective.

He has twice as many records as most people who do these segments. His choices are really eye opening...of course.
