101 Earthworks: Animal Collective: The Amazon Chapter 1

- In the first installment of the new Earthworks series, Animal Collective has reached Brazil, riding a riverboat deep into nature soaking in the sounds of the river and the people to feed the group’s music and to hunt down some of the reasons for the region’s rapid destruction. This is Earthworks, where musicians go into the wild for sonic inspiration. While in this first installment, the Animal Collective guys feel like it’s the “trip of a lifetime,” their guide points out just how the band may not yet be fully physically prepared to face the demanding climate.
Be sure to tune in to Viceland tonight (June 2nd) at 11pm ET to catch the full Earthworks: Animal Collective episode.
2:19 - Geo- "There are certain things i knew about the rainforest..."

The blue sampler they are using is called Kaleidoloop from Critter and Guitari in case anybody is wondering.
I was wondering, thank you!
MVP comment
Need to know this for an essay I'm writing, thank you to this comment from 2 years ago!
Thanks mang! I wonder if it was hard for Brian/Geologist to choose which modules to bring on this special trip (assuming he has more than what's in that case he brought).
Animal Collective will always have such a special place in my heart. They pour so much into the songs and sounds, this video just made me appreciate them that much more ❤️
"so you guys like music?" xD
watching this is bizzare its like watching those documentaries about bands or celebrities as a kid but now with the sweetest people on earth my all time favorite artists in a documentary capturing there sampling journey its weird its like a dream
I am from Brazil, and I loved this wonderful work, the sound of nature is of a mystical grandeur, I really liked the videos
omg they played campfire songs
Dude i live in Manaus had no clue this guys had been around here, that's so cool!!!
I would love to see the tribe reacting to some AC songs, very disappointed they didn't show that
AC is one of my favorite bands and i'm surprised that im only finding out about this now! was doing my weekly watch of Sung Tongs live performance and this was on the autoplay and i'm so pumped to watch this!
THIS IS THE GREATEST THING EVER
Kinda reminds me of the Beatles' trip to India. They may have not recorded any music there, but the majority of the White Albums' songs were written there, and the trip itself inspired a good chunk of the songs on that album. But what the guys are doing here is like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. How many musicians can say they got to record authentic tribal music?
Also, where was Panda Bear?
Where was Deakin?
I love this band so much
avey ur gonna get hot
Everyone in that village is so good looking
for some reason Geologist seems more handsome than usual in this video too
also I laughed out loud at the end when Avey sped up the recording
bravetherainbow typical davey bongs
Hahaa same here. he looked so happy after speeding up the recording 😂😂
I wonder what Aphex Twin would have done with those recordings and how he would have flipped it
Awesome documentary. Very cool moments as well as weird ones lol
Where's my baby Panda?
he's singing my girls
You're missing the important thing - what about DEAK
He is probably at home in Lisbon. Deakin is doing his own work right now.
This is a well edited doc
Oh good they played winters love
This series is such a damn vibe
avey wants to get spooked by a cayman
It was at that moment that Avey realizes he was 'Down There'.
Christian Woolsey xD
Rum, rum! I have found out where your sympathy comes from! Of the collective, really!
It's amazing to watch an old-fashioned industrial age creep in; as a composer from Bahia says: _ An Indian will come from the future, not because it is exotic but because it is the obvious _
In mega cities it is difficult to live collectively; most common is to live in mass. Thanks for the trip.
Lol they had to play My Girls
Yeah i mean why not just play the field recordings/nature sounds they kept talking about?
i love these men
Come to Brazil
love how they played classic AnCo stuff. wish they had nixed the Floridada and girls
So beautifull
Chief Pino is literally made of steel.
I REALLY LOVE THIS THANK YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yasss
screw what that guy said about Avey's shirt! I'd rather super hot and sweaty than get Zika!
you can wear a normal shirt
My god. Stick to music and not your misinformed propaganda.
this whole thing reaks of poorly thought out cultural appropriation
Go away
this whole thing reaks of poorly thought out cultural appropriation
How so? What did they do wrong?
they're a bunch of successful white dudes from baltimore who recorded the (presumably deeply impoverished) tatuyo tribe's music and used it as their own. i have only watched chapter one, but i'm gonna assume that the tribal musicians were not given performance/composition/publishing rights or paid royalties. would be so happy to learn that i'm wrong about that assumption.
cryfok It's hard for me to believe that the tribe wanted royalties for expressing their music to them
yeah, i'm sure they really love poverty and hardship just like all of us do.
also, i'm pretty sure that animal collective would not be super cool with you making money off of their music, even if they were just "expressing" it to you. white dudes are funny like that.
