The Complicated History of Dance Gavin Dance

- Forming in 2005, Dance Gavin Dance has been around long enough to build a pretty big name for themselves. Today, I go over the very, VERY complicated history of the band and all its members.
hehe 69k views hehe
no one else watch it i want this to be my legacy
dave, have you listened to Acceptance Speech 2.0?
edit, forgot to add that I love it
i have and i LOVE IT
Actually I haven't heard of that one but it sounds like it could be really cool!. Lmk if you figure that one out
oh .. sry dude

“how does dgd stay relevant thru all these lineup changes”
*will swan literally started writing different music to fit tilian’s style he’s a genius jfc underrated*
Swan and Mess are the glue of DGD
My god I didn’t realize how long I’ve been a fan of these guys. It still feels like Tilian is their “new” singer
Yeah they really have been around for a while
Ikr
I actually became a fan of DGD a couple months ago. A friend of mine showed my boyfriend some of their songs and in turn showed me. I'm absolutely in love with Tilian's vocals, they're so smooth and just put me on a feels trip every time. The contrast between his clean, sugary sounding voice and the chaos of the guitars is too good of blend for me to ignore. Also, I'm impressed that the man can hit higher notes in full voice than I can 😂 makes singing along challenging and fun.
Yeah you described it about as well as i could! Their contrast is always super cool and one of the main reasons i love them. Jon is one of the only heavy vocalists i can consistently stand.
It still feels like Kurt was a new member lol
Dave, who told you about this? EVERYONE has been specifically asked not to tell Dave.
lmao woops the beans have been spilled
You should win an award omg lol
Fantastic joke
THIS IS THE ACTUAL MOST INTELLECTUAL COMMENT IVE READ IN MY LIFE
Zack McGlocklin damn you. Take my upvote.
I found DGD back in 2008, I was a freashman in High School. Along with Circa Survive they still stay in my heavy rotation over a decade later.
So somehow no idea how, I had 2 songs from WISIRO on my itunes library
But were listed as unknown band, unknown artist. I loved those two songs, this is crazy but I did not technically "discover" the rest of what dance gavin dance had made up until the release of acceptence speech.... That means i was listening to them in 7th grade (without knowing who they were, and again these were my favorite two songs for over like 4 or 5 years lmao it drove me insane not knowing) all the way up until like nearly freshmen year of college... And then my friend showed my Acceptence speech... I think they'd made 3 full length albums prior at that point, not including WISIRO??? Regardless, that day was incredible fkr me, because after 5 years never knowing who made my favorite songs, I finally found out and then had tons of new songs to listen to lol. 100% my favorite band now.
Oh and p.s.
I grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere surrounded by hicks and country girls. It was basically all country music all the time (which fucking sucked).
Point being, NO ONE I had ever been friends with had heard of DGD, so I ended up thinking "hmm, maybe these really are the only two songs by this mysterious band I cannot find".
🤷 idk I think it's pretty cool that I discovered them like that. I think I'd have gone insane if I NEVER found out who they were though. The music they've created, and the passion of each current member has inspired me and improved my life in too many ways to count. 👏
Same here. There's no escaping DGD.
Happy to hear we're not alone, OG DGD fans. I saw them in '07. Good times!
Same! Literally started listening to them my sophomore year in 2008 and I still consider them one of my faves. Second to deftones
Tillian brings the order
And john brings the mess
and you steal comments from other people
Guilherme Buchner and spell Jon’s name wrong
Absolutely love dance Gavin dance . Each album reminds me where I was in life when they were released. I wouldn't want to live in a time line where they had broken up. The world would have been robbed of some of the greatest music to ever be created.
Jonny Craig got replaced by Tilian in two different bands lmao
Whats the other band?
Neil Anderson Emarosa during their 2011 tour
@@carsonIewis tilian left in 2010 though
I'm pretty sure he hates Tilian but hides it
@@besttrollever2409 I doubt it. Jonny knows he fucked his own career up by getting hooked on drugs and not avoiding them at all costs. He's doing better now I have heard. Tilian isn't at fault for taking Jonny's place.
Dave - Swan Soup is a memorable song
The robot with human hair - Am I Joke to You?
I do love Swan soup BUT OVER TRWH?
VicedOfVersa honestly lmao
Heat seeking ghost of sex??
Dance Gavin Dance is one of my favorite bands and has been for over 6 years. I think every frontman has brought a unique sound to the band making it hard to pick a favorite. Although I think Kurt Travis deserves more recognition than they give him. This band is fucking magic.
Kurt definitely does deserve some more credit. He filled in at a weird transitional and managed to still put some good stuff out there.
Kurt era was my favourite
I didnt realize Deathstar was so unpopular.
Each song still competes for space on my 32g ipod
Lmao that’s commitment to the ipod right there
Yeah same the self title has always been my favorite release
Deathstar is fucking dope. Everything DGD is dope but got such a soft spot for Deathstar
it's their best album imho, i was pretty disappointed when happiness came out
Alex English is still my favorite song to this day.
Swancore is the best core 😤👌
Are there any heavy swancore bands ?
@@user-tp4gi8gt3g feel like most swancore bands that ik of arent generally really heavy but a mix of both melodic and grungy my advice would be to check out secret band if you dont know them

@@user-tp4gi8gt3g def check out eidola and royal coda
@@user-tp4gi8gt3g definitely check out Sectret Band for hard shit.
For softer stuff, check out Sianvar and Hail The Sun.
I would also recommend the similar sounding, yet not swancore bands called Circa Survive and Emarosa.
Dude I feel like they downplayed kurt he's probably got some of my favorite melodies and lyrics ever. He brought the emo to the band
I think it mostly has to do with the fact that the immediate reception of him was NOT very high only cuz people were butthurt over jonny bring kicked out
@@hetareee_ Johnny fans are.... something special.
Kurt is my favorite. I hate johnny
Kurt I think the best singer of em all..and happiness is the best album ever
@@KingAlfa7 youre right, but people are gonna get mad at you for saying something so brave
Dance Gavin Dance is the only band where I can legit find something I love on all their albums despite them being so many and them being around for so long.
It’s hard for me to think of dgd without bringing up blue dream. The change 2/3rds of the way thru is incredible. But they have so many like that. Thanks for making this video. Love your content keep it up!
Omg yeah ik i love it too. And thanks! I have another script ready i just need to find time to edit it.
It's a shame that I never hear anyone talk about Matt Mingus. Not only is he one of the few who stayed since the beginning, but he is also an amazingly underrated drummer!
Oh yeah, DGD would definitely feel a lot different if he wasn’t a part of it still. That man can lay down some sick ass beats
Tillian saved this band tbh. I prefer him over mr macbook
JC controversial past aside, I like his voice a lot.
But I totally agree that with Tilian is the best theyve ever sounded
Kurt is better
@@josephkoch2262 jc has a nice voice but his substance is the same. all he does is cry about how he fucked up his life. he's been singing the same songs for over 10 years. honestly JC needs to stop singing and either give lessons or go into music production. he left slaves and relapsed AGAIN so you can bet we're gonna hear another "guys im so sorry" song from JC in the next year
*rolls eyes*
tillian added way more than just vocals to the band. the lyrics are more existential and less self centered than JC's stuff has ever been
Can someone explain to me the Macbook joke? I saw it everywhere but still don’t know what happened @@
(Sorry for being dumb..)
@@owlsumneitor it was a very long time ago, but basically JC said he was gonna sell autographed mac books or something but he used the money for other stuff and never sent the promised mac books.
My favorite band since middle school! I grew up on this music, DBM will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m digging the new stuff with Tilian, too.
I jam DBM and happiness at least once a week. I loved Kurt in DGD.
Can’t forget the Hot Topic exclusives “People You Knew/Perfect” that dropped in 2011!
Who's out here telling dave?
I’m obsessed with Secret Band!

I’ll always be a fan of Jonny Craig’s vocals. Brings me back to the best days of my life. Back in highschool!♥️ I’ll never stop listening to the early stuff of DGD.
Thank you so much for introducing me to LP2. I can already tell this will be an album I'll listen to for months straight.

Happiness does have some of the best songs on it
Self titled and happiness are my favorite albums
I can't say I have a favorite of them each album has its own star song with a unique sound and powerful lyrics each singer and album has done remarkable work in this band unlike we'll see with any other band and I agree dude alot like birds WAS so amazing
You are not a weirdo, you just have good taste haha!
I hate how late I am with DGD, I started since Mothership 3 years ago, but going back to their old albums is just amazing. This band is incredible. They have never failed to impress me with any of their albums. I can’t wait for their next album next year.
It's never too late.
I mean I'm pretty much in the same boat. i started listening to them about 6 months or so before Mothership was released but got into them pretty quickly. And I can't wait either
As someone whos listened since before happiness, welcome! Happy to have you
2:16 I think you meant "12 hours, 630 miles"
yeah lol but at that point i didn’t wanna re-record
Haha no biggie just figured I'd point it out good sir
Honestly surprised you aren't more popular this is done much better than most videos i've seen.
This is a bit weird, but I actually discovered DGD through Fantano's review. I decided to see if they were as Fantano described them, as I do with many of his negative reviews, and although I didn't think they were as bad, they weren't my thing, as they reminded me a lot of emo and post-hardcore scene bands from the mid and late 2000s that I can't stand. However, I kept going back to that album and continued to check out more of their work, and they grew on me a lot. My favorite album by them is Acceptance Speech with my favorite song of their's period being Death of the Robot with Human Hair. They were a band that I never thought I would like in a million years, but their knack for fusing lightning-fast math rock and post-hardcore riffs with pop melodies and hooks, especially with Tillian, really won me over. The fact that it all started with a scathing review from Fantano is kind of crazy.
Yeah, I found out about them because of a Spotify recommended playlist. I got freaked out by Jon, but then really started liking it. Plus Will's riffs are enough to infect anyone with love for their music. Except for maybe Fantano. But whatever he don't matter. Just don't tell him I said that.
Yeah aside from coming across and not caring for a couple of their songs back in 2010 or so, I didn't know much about DGD until Anthony Fantano's review. I like the guy's content quite a bit and kinda jumped on the whole "lol it's shitty post hardcore in [current year]" thing. But then I came back to it a couple years later and decided, you know what, I'll bite. Let's try this weirdo band.
I love them so. much. IG is my ironically my favourite album of theirs despite getting 1'd by him.
Also love the Fooies ;)
I wanted to thank you sir.
Somewhere along the lines of me going through new music that had popped up through recommendations and such- your upload was presented to me, and I jumped in blindly, but hopeful.
You did not disappoint.
Your mixture of complex, objective, and loving description of this band led me to a pile of notes and now I own almost all of their albums.
Because of your upload.
The only song I was familiar with was "Count Bassy", thanks to you however- I now have 4 hours of music I have not taken off repeat for 3 weeks now.
So thank you.
Thank you for sharing your passion for this band and their music; you have brightened many, many hours and days for me.
bro this is literally the most eloquent shit thanks for fucking watching and getting invested man i hope you get to see them this next tour
@@hetareee_ nah man, thank you for the hard work and passion you poured and spread evenly throughout this upload. I listen to all these albums daily at work now.
lmao i don’t know what to say. i’m glad this affected you so positively and that you’re able to listen to them so frequently because of this dumb video i made. thanks for watching :)
Alvaro Alcala was their first rhythm guitarist before Sean came in, he was present for their first ep with “dashing young and bold”. He was a member of farewell unknown. The picture you used for Jason Ellis was another picture of Zach Garren. Zachy also never returned for any DBMii touring. The original secret band ep was also released in 2011- it had been remastered and re released 2014. Those are my dorky nicks at this video, probably forgetting some things. Don’t @ me.
yeah looking back now i realize i made a few mistakes with the info part. sorry about that
Ironically enough death star is my favorite all around album , but I'm a lifelong fan. Hopefully I'll get a tattoo of them by years end
Oooh yeah that's a good idea actually. I'll have to add that to my list. And Death Star isn't awfully bad, I just think it wasn't up to a lot of people's expectations.
Deathstar was fire. Hot water on wool an people you know are top 5 dgd tracks
I'm a new fan, got in around Instant Gratification, and Deathstar is my favorite album easily. Maybe I just love Kurt Travis. But the band was so different for that album, it's not a fair comparison, especially to the new stuff. The new stuff I absolutely love too, but for different reasons, and Deathstar holds a special place in my heart.
Yeah that’s definitely a good way to put it. Obviously each singer brings different style but it’s cool to see how they mesh that with the rest of the band.
I have a huge chestpeice tat of "the death of the robot" and i have 'no rAgrets'
DGD has remained as one of my favorite bands throughout the years. Glad they’re still together and making music. Thanks for taking me back to middle school haha
and somehow, it got way more complicated now that Tim died and the band seperate ways with Tilian
DGD has been a steady sound for probably at least five years. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of Secret Band until today. Thank you so much.
I love that some one other than me cares about the history of DGD.
i wonder if this video would be twice as long if it were made today
Dang bro, nice job. Hope this blows up
Im a huge DGD fan and I didnt know about SecretBand. You got a sub for telling me. Thank you good sir
Ryan Wheeler fuckin same! Been listening to DGD since about 2009 and never think I have heard of them. Off to Spotify as we speak.
Wow, this video is very well put together! It’s great! I love DGD. Kurt is my fav. I feel each singer brought something different. I just love each album for different reasons. Also I love your fondness of Covet! Yvette young is my woman crush 😭 Great video!
Yeah i’m pretty much the same, each album has its own super cool appeal. And yeah Covet is fucking awesome, it’s super nice to put in the background
Oh. It gets more complicated.
I don't care what anyone says DTBM2 was one of the best albums to date, acceptance speech is easily my #1. come for me.
this is true. acceptance speech forever goes fucking hard
This short doc literally makes me listen to old DGD album, (tbh my first dgd album was Mothership) so i never looking up for the old stuff, after watching this and notice that you mentioning memorable song in each album, i'm straight to spotify and give em listen and amazed, thank you for this vids man, i never realized DGD is whole amazing band back then
Yeah of course! Thank you for watching! I'm glad that it gave you a chance to listen to some of their older stuff and enjoy it :)
Really nice video, you are rock solid! ❤
A friend of mine recently introduced me to them.. I'm so glad he did, because they're absolutely amazing!
I highly enjoyed this. Blood wolf is amazing and I'm looking forward to their 2020 album.
Thanks man! I enjoyed it too and any new DGD project will always hold up with the hype from me
Its so fuckin good
I started listening to DGD In high school and never stopped, They have always been one of my favorite bands.
I was at the anniversary show in Sac. If I could pick one day in my life to live over and over it'd be this one!
my favorite band since i was 11... im 21 years old now. I loved this video, thanks for posting this !
wow that's commitment! I've only really been listening to them for about 4 years now but it's cool to see the impression they've left on some people.
dave yes ! dgd has had such an impact on my life! ive been with them since the beginning basically . switching lead singers, switching band members, switching sound! i love how dgd is today
Just got a bit more complicated
I started listening to them right when they came out, then didn’t listen for a decade . They got really really good
I think it's time for a part 2 or update...
This band still needs an updated history every 12 months, such a fluid group, riddled with tragedy and controversy for sure. One of my favs :)
This band got me thru highschool
I went to the reunion concert with all 3 clean vocalist on my birthday in 2016. It was my favorite concert I've ever attended.
Oh yeah I'm sure that was absolutely incredible
They definitely came up with a new sub genre: Swan Core! It seems to be the case because in recent years there have been bands invoking or influenced similar sounds that DGD is known for
This is a really well done video! My boyfriend is watching it with me. I just discovered your channel through it, can't wait to see more of your work!
That's so awesome to hear! I got a new video written that I'll hopefully start editing by the end of this week so look forward to that soon :)
I value your opinion and this was a great shot at an old band I’ve been following since I was younger than you are now BUT DEATHSTAR IS STILL a solid listen all the way through to this day. Template for a lot of sounds that were going on after the album.
dude honestly i haven't listened to it in a while and with the amount of comments ive gotten about how good it is at this point im just gonna say it was good lol
I have listened to DGD for years and had no idea secret band existed. Bless you.
Of course man! They are indeed a blessing in disguise
This explanation about to get a bit longer 😂
Bro hasn't made a video in 3 years but he really should
Just discovered this band and I’m so happy I found them
Self Tilted is my favorite album, fight me!
I remember mothership vividly. It was my freshman year and my friend showed me them about a week before it came out. That album is one of the main reasons I’m a guitarist now
I can't be the only one who feels like Kurt's voice and Direction was the best DGD era
Probably not no. Personally i’ve kinda just grown to love each era for what it is and enjoyed the new stuff they’ve been putting out
I love eacc era but Kurt gave me good Stoney vibes I love it
Definitely not! The OP is fuckin trippin!
Dude literally said only two songs on the album were any good. Wtf? He also said Kurt left the band instead of being clear he was replaced before even knowing he was no longer in the band! How do you miss that when trying to cover their history?
@@imorokr Facts . Happiness by the far the most experimental post hardcore album I heard in years . They had funk and jazz chords on their shit . No breakdowns . Great time for music
Nope, you're not the only one. I was honestly tempted to comment something like this. Kurt era was the best in my opinion. Death Star is still my most listened to album. That and Happiness are my usual go to. Honestly though (in my opinion) everything up till IG were pretty good. I can get down to everything up until that point. IG wasn't that good except like 4 songs that I actually dig. Everything after that was super generic.. But Happiness and Death Star are my favorite and what I prefer when I go to listen to DGD.
Dance Gavin dance is the band that up to this day gives me so much feels . My first tattoo was the first song that I actually listened to to by then . “ uneasy hearts weigh the most” And personally I find that Kurt produced the best songs throughout the whole of DGD ( everybody is good in their own way too ) . Really wish they would come to Asia to tour 🥰
it just keeps getting worse and worse😭tims death ad tilians allegations might just be the straw that breaks the camels back
Very well done. I loved how you told us which songs were essentially ones that you’d recommend. It makes going to each album and finding “the good songs” easier
I mean I think pretty much all of their songs are good songs, but those are definitely my favorites. Thank you though, I really appreciate it!
I love Mess and Tillian. But Happiness will always be my favorite album.
Their song Son of a Robot randomly snuck into a playlist I was listening to and it sent me down this rabbit hole.
son of robot is a very good introduction to the band, that’s great!
Amazing video dude. And yes, Yvette is simply incredible too 💗
A few errors here and there - the photo you showed as "Jason Ellis" is Zach Garren in his "scene" haircut, but fair, I believe there was just one photoshoot with Jason in it. Secret Band's first EP in fact came out way back, the "re-release" didn't change anything at all so a small fact bending here. Also, the role of Andrew Wells shouldn't be downplayed as he basically filled the spot of O'Sullivan/Garren/Benton, he's even a regular session member. Also, no mention of Pussy Vultures and Hot Topic version of DBM II with extra songs.
still praying Andrew one day joins them, the guy has the voice of an angel and makes DGD somehow sound even better than they did
i feel like at this point he basically is, he’s consistently featured instrumentally and helps with vocals live and sometimes on recorded songs too, so i’m sure that there’s a reason why they’ve decided to not make him an official member. they don’t seem to worked up about it and like you said he’s doing great with them as it is so i think it’s cool either way
Happiness and Deathstar are still my favorite! So glad I stumbled on this video!
PAIN
Yep PAIN
Yo your channel is dope as hell. Please keep making videos :)

I’m just gonna say it Kurt Travis was under appreciated... I truly believe his music was more memorable than Johnny
Nice video! It is great to have one quick summary of so much of the bands history. I do have some minor nitpicks though because I am a piece of shit:
What about Pussy Vultures? This omission is particularly glaring because you show the vinyl cover containing it and Summertime Gladness.
You mention that Tree City Sessions has "at least one" song from each prior release, but the whole point of that album was that it had exactly two songs from each prior studio album.
You pronounced Count Bassy wrong.
You also said "12 hours, 630 hours" when referring to "12 hours, 630 miles"
For me, the tillian phase was the best dgd phase.

i was in school in 2005,i enjoy they music...work at 2007..still hve their song in my nokia phone.
Really cool vid, but that wasnt jason ellis XD. I did stop listening when kurt came for deathstar but happiness brought me back.
yeah sorry i couldn't find any pictures of him lol
Been listening to the guys for the past 11 years. I drove to California for swan fest and was in Arizona during the 10 year with dayshell. Can't wait to see these guys grow even more.
FIRST OFF. John recorded vocals for Self titled. THEN departed the band. Kurt came in earlier. Also this to me is my favorite record due to a better guitar duo than the previous. So say as you want, all of kurt travis era is better than Tillian. i know ill get hate but yeah just my opinion
I started listening to DGD in highschool when I downloaded a couple random songs from WISiRO on Limewire. I immediately fell in love with them and have been a devout fan ever since.
Secret band is my favorite thing from DGD
Dope video. Been in a DGD rabbit hole for weeks now n this is a nice cherry on top for me.
you speak blasphemy against deathstar, that's essential dgd
don’t have a problem with it personally just in general it didn’t do as well as some of their other stuff
Meh. Deathstar is pretty bad. Though caviar and alex English are on it so i digress

Sit back boys and girls! We’re going on a _feel trip_ real talk though this takes me back to 2008 where I was sitting on MySpace looking up music. Came across DGD ,and I fell in love either their sound and vocals. 🤟🏻🙌🏻
Subbed cuz this video and recent appreciation of the band cuz Son of Robot, imma go and try out there old stuff.
Yeah, I would definitely recommend it! They ended up being my most-listened to artist last year because I basically just spent the entire summer listening to them.
I generally love this sound of music, but for the longest time for any band that has a sterotypical following that I don't feel like I fit in (say Panic at the Disco, Bring Me The Horizon, Sleeping with Sirens etc.) Or anything that might appear as scene or emo I couldn't get into unless someone incidentally pushed me into it or I find one song I can't not listen to. I grew up listening to everything so it's wierd for me to notice about myself. I think what made me realize and try to change this was Linkin Parks experimentation from Minutes to Midnight on. So many people hatred and criticized including myself, but I pushed myself to listen to A Thousand Suns until I loved it. Now other then Hunting Party I love all there music (with the exception of Valentine's Day.... Just the end of it...) and I've been more willing to expand into any band or music regardless of old or new sounds, the groups that listen to it, or other people's opinions. Soooo if your as much of a fan of Linkin Park as I am maybe.. you should make a video on them.
Believe it or not, I've only ever really listened to that one song by them that everyone considers super edgy, which I'm guessing you know what I mean. It's not that I'm disinterested, but they're one of those bands for me that I've always meant to listen to, but just never gotten around to. I think once I find some free time though, I probably will.
@@hetareee_I'm not sure what song your talking about, but you definitely should. Besides the fact that they're just great, they've had a huge impact on modern rock and it would be good to explore those roots of metal. They're my #1 favorite band next to Avenged Sevenfold for hard rock.
As i get more time this week i definitely will. Also, the lyrics “crawling in my skin” may help jog your memory.
This is a VERY GREAT video and comprehensive log on this band! Thank you! I really have learned to like them a lot and it’s fascinating to hear the backstory of how everything unfolded and so on! So thank you for this video! Much Respect and Much Love!
Sorry, I have to say it...
12 hours and 630 hours
Hahahaha could've just shortened it and said 642 hours😂
