  • Welcome to Draw Tip Tuesday!
I use watercolors a lot - I like combining them with my ink line drawings (for which I use a fountain pen friendly waterproof ink: Platinum Black Carbon Ink). Watercolors combine well with colored pencils or crayons too. And it's very easy to take with you on location. It's the medium with which I color my world in my sketchbook.
I won't be recommending any brands here - I can only show you what I got attached to throughout the years; the colors that are very familiar to me and that work for me. I know how they behave when I combine them, so I don't need to think much about the mixes I make. When I would add paints from a different brand, I would need to get acquainted with those once again, and reinvent my palette.
Whatever brand of paints you use, make sure you know your colors.
If you don't know your palette well, make swatches. Take a look at the order they're in, on your palette. Does it make sense to you? Do you know the difference between your blue and your green? Sometimes that's very hard to see. Do you want them next to each other or would you rather have them further apart, so it works more intuitively?
Mix your paints and see how they behave. Try mixing more water, or less. And try it on different kinds of paper too, you might be surprised about the diversity of results.
I often get the question how to mix skin tone - and that of course is a question that doesn't have one answer, because there are as many skin tones as there are people in the world. I'll show you in today's video a few of an endless range of mixes.
The watercolors in my palette, all from the brand Daniel Smith:
    Hansa Yellow Medium
    New Gamboge (= warm yellow)
    Monte Amiata Natural Sienna
    Quinacridone Gold
    Sap Green
    Hooker’s Green
    Cerulean Blue, Chromium
    Ultramarine Blue
    Indigo
    Van Dyck Brown
    Italian Burnt Sienna
    Burnt Umber
    Permanent Red Deep
    Quinacridone Rose
    Transparent Pyrrol Orange

This is so very helpful to watch you dip into your paints and make the swatch and do some mixing. I'll be watching this video over and over.

I am not a great artist or anything but have become a bit of a pigment nerd after I started using watercolor, and I think knowing what pigment(s) are used in a certain paint is important especially if you start mixing them. I prefer single pigment paints for that reason, but some convenient mixes can be practical.

I have never dived deep into the technical aspects of pigments and such, so I just use what seems to work for me without questioning the why. I love how you found your way by knowing about pigments, and how every artist has a different way of learning, and getting to know their materials!

Really great palette! I have trouble mixing greens that don't look like mud. I'd love to see you mixing greens!

I purchased it as an empty palette in an art supply shop, it doesn't have a brand. (It's similar to the metal watercolor boxes by Schminke)

I use almost all of these colors, too, from DSmith. Watercolor is my favorite medium.
I'm looking forward to your book release! I really enjoy your art. These DTT videos are such a helpful encouragement to get on with making art.
Is your quinacridone gold the new blend or old stock? I have very little pure QG left, and wonder how the new mixes. VDB + French Ultramarine is my favorite dreamy, granulating grey mix.
    Cheers! -Anne

I have no idea about the QG, Anne! I use what I can get and have and I am not an expert at all so I didn't even know there was such a thing as new and old stock/mix.

Thanks for sharing 😊 Took Quinacridone Gold out of my palette as well recently, don’t miss it yet. I have quite a few colors exactly matching your selection - is Italian Burnt Sienna super hard to rewet for you as well? I have switched to Transparent Red Oxide as it took ages to get enough pigment out of the pan… Miss the delicate granulation of Italian Burnt Sienna but it got to a point where it almost ruined my brushes

Surprised you only have a half pan of Monte Amiate…..I find it essential for just about everything……….think I would swap half/whole with Sap/Monte Amiate
