It was really pleasure to see and hear your enthusiasm. I’m Pole and of course using Roman Szmal extensively. Here it is cheapest professional brand :) And I am proud that it is a Polish brand
I love how you explain all colors like how they make you feel. Those who have vivid imagination like I do, instantly embark on a journey experiencing everything with your soothing voice in the background narrating every moment.
Thank you so much! There are so many channels out there that talk about the chemistry and scientific makeup of these colors (which is great I might add), but for me, color is such a visceral and nearly spiritual experience 😂 I love the idea of taking everyone in a journey with me
@@Pointebrush yes, that’s what unique about you and your art. Its so different yet so beautiful. I hope some day you teach us how to paint one of your whimsical paintings.
Love, love, love Roman Szmal paints! I have an artist friend who is Polish and she got me interested in them originally so when Jackson's had a sale, I grabbed the Hortus Botanicus (Izabela Wolska-Kusmider) palette and fell in love. I then got another 14 to fill in the gaps in the tin :D and I adore them so much. I'm in the UK so the stickiness/getting them out of the packs, isn't as big a deal here thankfully but a short spell in a fridge or freezer definitely helps with removing the paper top. Alongside A. Gallo and my fave Schmincke, these are the ones I go back to time and time again.
I discovered these paints about a year ago. I had always been a die-hard Schmincke fan, but these Roman Szmal are gorgeous. The Misty Morning and Aquarius Green are two of my favorites.
I discovered Roman Szmal and Rósa Gallery (from Ukraine) a few months ago. Both amazing paints. Agree with you on Misty Morning … the surprise pops of colour as it dries.
Since discovering your channel I have come to the conclusion that you can sell me absolutely everything you use and I will bought it all. Love the reviews and your take on art, it’s so inspiring. Jenny
You should redo the misty morning and put it down physically and bully. It with a lot of water flooding in the area and then mix it around and then lift up a little bit of the colour to see the separation in pigments. It’s absolutely stunning.
@@Pointebrush I second this. I was going to make the same comment! Misty Morning is a moody beast (Much like the Shadow Violet), it shines when flooded and pushed about, rather than blended to perfection. The two tones and granulation upon drying are breathtaking.
I am so glad that you enjoyed this paint so much! I’ve been spoiled a bit b/c the Roman Szmal watercolour paint was one of the first that I tried - I am only very new to watercolour painting, the paint was available at my local art store, it wasn’t quite as expensive as a lot of the other professional grade paint, and I felt like I was helping the economy in that part of Europe (next to Ukraine) by buying it. However, reviews of the paint by people who actually know what they are talking about have not been plentiful so it was difficult for me to tell whether my impression (I think they are truly beautiful) is biased by my extreme inexperience 😊. I am very very glad that you like it so much and I can’t wait to see it appearing in some of your work (and the work of other professional artists). Loved the video!
What a wonderful brand to start with! I’m so glad to hear you’ve been enjoying it and it sounds like you have very good instincts. Trust them and don’t worry about validation of your supplies from other artists 😉 You’ve got this! Thanks for stopping by and watching!
I love my Roman Szmal pans!! Misty Morning is my favourite colour so far. If anyone is having issues getting their paints out of the packaging First - put the pans in the freezer for a few minutes so the paint doesn’t stick to the packaging. Second - the number bit of the sticky label on the FRONT of the half pans, peel that to the back & I find the label comes straight off the plastic & you can cut the little tab that was on the front & stick it to the side of the pan
I’m a huge fan of Roman Szmal watercolours and have been for a couple of years. Beautifully made and such a variety of gorgeous colours. They feature heavily, alongside Daniel Smith, in my carefully curated 70 colour set of my favourite watercolours ❤
I've been using these for a while now. They rewet easily and flow beautifully. They do use up quickly, so maybe not quite as pigmented as some of the top tier brands, but considering a full pan is cheaper than a half pan of Schmincke / Winsor & Newton / Daniel Smith that's fair enough.
I was so excited about them I barely even had the time to talk about how reasonably priced they are to boot. And yes, the potters pink is pinker but honestly, unless someone was standing there with a microscope… I just don’t care 😂😝
I was a big fan of Whites Nights before the prices went through the roof so haven’t bought any for a long time. These are so beautiful I am working on getting a huge collection. Jackson’s still has them on sale!!
Roman Szmal is one of my favorite brands. I'm super into pigments, and I love all the unique and new pigments Roman Szmal offers that no other brand does. I see more space open in that little metal palette of yours, lol. I definitely recommend you fill that thing up - you won't be disappointed, lol. Anyway, great video. Thanks for sharing. Much love ❤
Couldn't agree more! And he seems like a very interesting person too. If you haven't already, check out the interview he gave on Jackson's YT Channel. Very interesting indeed.
I purchased a ton of Roman Szmal watercolors last year and have been enamoured with them ever since. They flow beautifully, wet easily, have so much personality and mood to them that they make painting a joy. I love that there's unique pigments and mixes and that they offer so many earthy tones, instead of the same old pigments a lot of makers do. The only downside is I wish I could purchase 15ml tubes as some of my fave colors I use up quickly.
My go to paints have always been DS, BUT a few years ago I purchased several RS full pans. Well, I absolutely love RS paints, and have had no trouble using them. The Aquarius green is now a staple green for me, as it really looks natural. It holds it's own in landscapes/leaves. The prices of these pans cannot be beat. I'm not a fan of half pans ( I don'tlike smashing my brushes into half pans), so the RS full pans R perfect for me. The color selection is quite large too. I love potters pink, but only use it straight out of the tubes, because it'sso hard to re-wet, until I got my hands on the RS pan. Very easy to get full strength potters pink on my brush. Let's say, I'm a big fan of RS paints.
Yes! Yes! Yes! This is my experience of Roman Szmal as well. Its just the experience of WOW! I have to stop myself from getting more when there are sales. The Pascualino Fracasso set is a unique one and has space for 4 additional pans of your choice. I recommend it!. I was so happy for you that you were happy with them! For those that want to tip toe in there are the small five full pan boxes on Jackson's. Like Margot said; "Go out and get some!" ha
Your enthusiasm is infectious! I've just ordered a handful of half pans to try for myself. My family just don't get it when I become enraptured with watercolour and go to them to show a new amazing colour and pontificate about its qualities (ad nauseam); I fully understand your ebullience! Great video. Thanks.
🥳🎉 I love RS watercolors! Each time Jackson’s has a sale I like to add some full pans to my RS collection. I add to my collection using the same criteria you do ie unique to me colors and filling in gaps. Jackson’s were out of some of the colors so next time they have them in stock I’ll add them to my collection 😁.
@@Pointebrush my favorites tend to be the ones I just purchased 😁. So last time I acquired quinacridone burnt sienna (PO48), quinacridone maroon (PR206), and indanthrone (PB60), which was a great coincidence since these colors were perfect for a painting I had planned to do. EDIT I forgot I also purchased Przybysz’s Grey PB29, PR122, and PG26.
I fell in love with Roman Szmal the first time I ever created with them too and no other brand comes close to them in my opinion. Such a pleasure to create with!
I think that I mentioned this before but I just love how you describe paint you make them sound much more than just a color but more of a feeling 🥰- hopefully this make sense 😅
Part of problem with it sticking is the honey. The more humid your location, the more they will stick. I moved from Florida (dripping so damp) to Colorado (turn my back and an entire pool of paint is completely dried) but the sticky paints don’t stick to the paper.
I'm glad to see this. The guy who makes and sells the Stablo Easel sells these. I've considered buying a palette, so your review seals the deal - when I get money again!
They’re lovely paints and for the price too, they’re my top choice. I’ve got a dozen, including some you bought, and some like cobalt teal I’ve used so much, it’s so pretty. The greens and golds are lush too.
You’ve done exactly what I’ve just done, saw the Jackson’s sale and boom, straight on to buy loads of Roman Szmal paints. I love their massive range of single pigment colours, but there’s too many! I want all of them 😂 a top tip about the half pan packaging…I got a pair of sharp scissors and just cut through the plastic all away around the pan, and the plastic “bubble” lifted off of each paint like a hat 😊
Live your enthusiasm and how you share what you associate the colours with. It reminds me of the book "Werner's Book of Colour" from the 1800s, where the author referred to natural objects to convey the colours. I think you will like it You curated a very thought out colour selection. I have yet to purchase but your selection has given me some good ideas. Thanks so much! I enjoyed it enourmously. PS: i admire your patience with the plastic packaging. I would have stabbed it with a scalpel to rescue the paint from their plastic prison! Well done.
Interesting set of colours and one of the most watchable swatch videos out there with all those plans flying around about what to do with all these colours. Not sure about that Aquarius red though. Looks a bit too opaque for my liking and I'd be looking to substitute it out. And maybe a bit overweight in earthy red/yellows? That potters' pink though - try mixing it with each of the other colours in turn and there are some crazy granulating surprises waiting for you. 19 colours is 19 colours. 19 colours plus potty pink is 38 colours.
Margot, your video are SO FUN to watch! Thank you so much for making them. Wondering if you can review your favourite Sennelier and M Graham (honey based) paints. Could you also share your tips on how to store them?
I'm so frugal, I never buy new paint, I always stick with winsor and newton, but you are peaking my interest. I'm seriously thinking of purchasing a few of these. They really do look beautiful. "Go out and get some!!!" I probably will. 💕🖌
I had settled on a palette of White Nights watercolors, an old Russian brand from St. Petersburg, also moisturized with honey. I understand that the invasion of Ukraine is no fault of the manufacturer, but I just couldn't abide purchasing anything more from Russia. I decided to try Roman Szmal, was well pleased, and donated my White Nights stock to a watercolor class at a nearby junior college. The Roman Szmal colors are a little different, even if given the same names, but I could easily assemble a satisfactory palette similar to my White Nights palette, with even a couple of improvements. I haven't quite figured out how to use it effectively, but the caput mortuum is a very interesting color!
Beautiful color choices! They remind me of A. Gallo watercolor paints which are honey and clove based, they have the same smooth ease of use and I just love them. I'll have to give a few of these a try! Thanks for sharing 🤩
Love this video! I have a plethora of Roman Somali watercolors, and wanted another idea to make a palette. So happy for you that you found them. Thank you!
Oh là là, I liked your enthusiasm, Margot, it is contagious. I already have several, many Roman Szmal colors and none have disappointed me even the ones that are hard to rewet. They often have unique textures and personality. Your review made me get more colors (especially since there was a sale). And I like that they come in large pans, now in tubes would be great.
I think you made an unnecessary exaggeration of the packaging. Try the point of scissors to pierce the paper on the back of the blister pack...simple 😊 But I really loved your video. Mine arrived yesterday...so excited. I'm a beginner...couldn't stand to learn with cheap paint. So I really appreciated your excitement of it, great listening to you 😊
@@Pointebrush Yes! Its fascinating to hear the story behind the paint makers! The Jackson's interview with Michael Harding inspired me to dive into playing around with Alizarin Crimson, Opera Rose, and Prussian Blue and to let go of the fear of lightfast ratings. (I am just painting for myself right now) ;)
@@derwood206 Yes! I know exactly what part you're talking about. I love how perfectly sensible his response to lightfastness questions was. Unless you're hanging your painting on the coconut tree of a desert island on the equator, you'll likely be fine 😉
A beautiful selection of paints, thank you for your beautiful swatching and description, there’s a few colours there I’ve yet to try. The dragon scales was so funny, I think I need that potters pink in my life! 😂 I did stock up on them when they arrived a few years back, they are amazing value and very beautiful.
That was very enjoyable to watch. Love how you describe each color which causes one to get lost in them. Beautiful paints. Fun to watch how much they brought such joy and amazement to you. Great way for swatching. 🎨🖌️😊
Wonderful palette setup 😊 I’ve never tried that brand before - hmmm the blister packs are not my thing at all…… 😁 I wonder how they fair against Daniel Smith? 😃 Green eggs and ham!! 🤣 he ended up liking them in the end! 😆
Merci ! J'hésitais et après avoir regardé votre vidéo j'ai commandé 18 couleurs !!! La marque est en rabais chez Jackson's en ce moment 🤗😍 Bonjour du Québec 😉
@@PaulaScardamalia Both! The Aquarius Red is most definitely an entrée to be had with a good bottle of Chianti. The Cherry Quinacridone on the other hand I would love with a drizzle of dark chocolate 😝
I love your videos! Even with a studio art degree and a minor in art history, I always learn something from your contagious enthusiasm! And I would like to duplicate your RS palette with your affiliate link. Looks like there will be a restock on 14 July. Would you be willing to list the colors you chose in the comments? Thanks!
Loved how you have described each colours and your excitement. Anyone who would watch this would want to go ahead and buy these paints. I surely did and I am not even a watercolour artist in any way or form. 😂.
Oh I’m so glad you enjoyed it! And I apologize in advance to anyone who’s bank account I ruined for the bad influence but hey, at least as far as paint price is concerned, RS is actually quite reasonable 😂😜
Loved watching this video, if you had to choose your top five from the ones you tested what would they be? I have not seen you enjoy a paint review as much as this one :)
Oooh that's a loaded topic. I feel like my top 5 would depend on what you paint. Tell me more about what your painting subjects are and I can give you some recs! Ps. Thank you so much, that means a lot!
@@Gothxuk Another question. Are you set on "essentials" and are looking for particularly unique interesting colors or are these to build a foundational set with?
@@Gothxuk Ok for you, what comes to mind are Misty Morning, Autumn Green Ocean Blue, Shadow Violet, Nickel Tungsten Yellow. All very unique and appropriate for your subject matter
I love when you use images describing the colors. (Don't think you need to apologize, at least for me.) I mean when it is honest and used as arguments people that (I would say) take the time and effort (and is capable) of using descriptions like that on the fly. Is in my view, rare to experience (and I would say that it's even something we miss today. Time for enjoying things, describing it for us self and other. Looking at the world with an artist eye. Btw I'm a beginner (pluss maybe) and tried to follow your video painting a ballerina. I could not find the same type of video om drawing/painting a guy. Do you have that? (Love the ballerina style btw😃)
Not at all! It’s an excellent question. Yes it can attract bugs so if you live in a warm climate and you’re painting en plein air, this would probably not be a good choice. I would recommend it for a studio setting in that case 🌈
You could research natural essential oils that deter ants. Buy some, then put a drop or two on a piece of cotton and leave it in your palette. Better to use a metal palette since natural essential oils eat away plastic.
I discovered both Roman Szmal and Rósa Gallery (Ukrainian) paints a few months ago … in Australia. Way nicer than Winsor & Newton Cotman paints I started with which seem insipid in comparison. And these paints are far more affordable … plus being so concentrated you use very little.
Watching you open these was painful. I’m just screaming at the tv: “You’re an artist! Do you not own a craft/xacto knife?!!” 😶😂😂 I know you shouldn’t NEED another product to open your product, but if it helps ease the painful process along, I’d take an extra 30 seconds to whip that bad boy out and get those suckers open! 😂😂
Hi Margot, love your channel, only discoverd it a few months ago, so glad I did. I usually watch on my TV, so can't comment from that. Anyway, after watching this video and seeing your experience and reactions with them, I decided to buy some. Luckily at the time, Jacksons had a sale on Roman Szmal and I bought a starter set of 5 full pans and 2 other pans at a fantastic price. I only bought 1 half pan, so was prepared for the possible sticky problem in the plastic lid, but as I am in chilly Blighty, it was already set and cold :), so no problems there. The Aquarius Green in the set is so lovely, they are all lovely. I am not normally a lover of pans, prefering tubes, but I am so glad I bought these and will definately be buying more. So, thanks to your video, I have now some beautiful paints I don't think I would have otherwise bought. xx
Hi Roz! I'm so glad my video inspired you to try RS. If the video wasn't clear enough l feel very strongly about the great value and quality they deliver 😂. Thank you so much for your kind words and I wish you lots of luck (and fun) with your new paints! Stay warm in chilly Blighty! x
It’s funny you say that because I think I said that at some point in my swatching session and had to edit it out so I didn’t get in trouble with UA-cam for promoting tobacco 😂

Oh that is good to know!! Thank you for the tip!
@@Pointebrush ..😁 no probs, happy painting 👍🤗🇬🇧
Did the same thing after seeing Jackson’s. Waiting for my haul now!
Well done.
I adore, adore, adore Roman Szmal paints. Thanks for the review!
Glad you enjoyed! Thanks for watching!
I’ve been on the fence and now I feel off! Wow, beautiful colors. Can you list the colors you swatched again?
I got so tickled watching you do this. The colors you chose are wonderful.
Thank you Sherry 🌷
I agree with you. They are fantastic. They have become my faves and...I hear he is putting out paint in tubes soon too!!
That’s the word on the street! Someone better hide my wallet 😬
@@Pointebrush Right??
I almost fell off my couch laughing when you said "oh punaise" !!! 😂 It was so heartfelt ! And so French !!!
😘😘😘 📌
Margot, your video are SO FUN to watch! Thank you so much for making them. Wondering if you can review your favourite Sennelier and M Graham (honey based) paints. Could you also share your tips on how to store them?
Those Aquarius colors are gorgeous!
Aren't they? sigh....
I'm so frugal, I never buy new paint, I always stick with winsor and newton, but you are peaking my interest. I'm seriously thinking of purchasing a few of these. They really do look beautiful.
"Go out and get some!!!" I probably will. 💕🖌
Like I said… I’m a bad influence 😂 Give it a go and I hope you enjoy them as much as I did!
They are cheaper than Windsor newton and IMO twice as pretty
@@rebeccahesser8057 It pains me to say this given how long my run with Winsor and Newton has been but.... You might just be right Rebecca 🙈
I am convinced ❤
Next time I buy paints I will get these. Adore your selection of colors so I will look at this again and take notes. Thank you
I will be expecting your box of chocolates and thank you letter in the mail for having changed your life. You’re welcome 😂
Looks like another very nice brand but I really don’t get to overwhelmed by using new wc. It’s watercolor and they come to life by using them.
A Gallo is another one I’m circling like a hungry vulture 😂 Maybe for my birthday this year… everyone i speak to seems to love them
I am just getting into watercolor, what exactly is the purpose of the granulating watercolors?
Love this video! I have a plethora of Roman Somali watercolors, and wanted another idea to make a palette. So happy for you that you found them. Thank you!
Very nice! Thank you for swatching this interesting new watercolor paint. I'm definitely going to get some and try for myself!
You’re most welcome! Thank you for watching!
Oooh what did you get?? Excited for you, it’s always fun waiting for a package to come in the mail (albeit refreshing the tracking info every hour 😂)

Wonderful selection of colors, at such an afforable price! I've been slowly adding to my collection for the last year and I love them.
I love your excitement!! might have to give these a try!
can I ask what paper you're using for the swatches?
Absolutely! It’s a watercolor block by Etchr
I’ll have to try my RS my first impression was disappointment compared to my DS
These paints are beautiful !! I will definitely get some. Thanks for sharing 💕

Beautiful colors and presentation ! Thanks for the freezer tip!
What a fun video to watch! Thx for your honest opinion and your enthusiasm was a joy to experience.
Fantastic review, such fun! Gorgeous swatches!
Happy you enjoyed it!
@@Pointebrush I just ordered a set on the Jackson's sale! There's a lovely 13 minute interview with Roman on Jackson's You Tube channel. Lovely man!
I think a scalpel or something similar would have been of great help for you with the packaging!
I think so too!
I think you made an unnecessary exaggeration of the packaging. Try the point of scissors to pierce the paper on the back of the blister pack...simple 😊
But I really loved your video.
Mine arrived yesterday...so excited. I'm a beginner...couldn't stand to learn with cheap paint. So I really appreciated your excitement of it, great listening to you 😊
Note to painters…you can use an exact knife to open the little packages!
Yes! What in the world was I thinking… even a pair of scissors would have been better than using my bare hands 😂
Yeah, the second I tried these paints they became my favorite! I have no words ^^
Ditto my friend, ditto!
Would u tell What was the first yellow color? Thx
Roman Szmal has an interview on the official Jackson UA-cam channel. A very interesting man.
I watched it today. What an interesting background and training he has! I’m also very intrigued by the interviews of Michael Harding
I loved that interview! I personally am not a fan of the RS paints, but I really liked Roman Szmal himself.
I’ve seen it too! I adore my Roman Szmal pans 😊❤
I like the way you do your colour swatches
Thank you! 🎨
I find pans hard to work with, because i tend to use big paint brushes. I so wish they did tubes.
I think he’s working on tubes this year!! Fingers crossed it comes out soon!
@@Pointebrush oh thank you. I hope so because I think they look lovely. You are so passionate about your colours. Lovely to watch.
Cut through from the front of the 1/2 pans with a craft knife
That way you can keep the packaging info intact. Hope this makes sense 🤔
Great tip! And now I’ll have to order more just to give it a try… 😈

What a tragedy, 🤣🤣. I love these paints.
That was very enjoyable to watch. Love how you describe each color which causes one to get lost in them. Beautiful paints. Fun to watch how much they brought such joy and amazement to you. Great way for swatching. 🎨🖌️😊
RS are my favorite!! A. Gallo are my other go to paints.
You have good taste! A Gallo is so tempting!!
I have to get some of these!
Oh punaise! Oh la la! Entierement d'accord, Margot! Ces couleurs sont magnifiques!
J’y étais presque avec les gros mots 😂
Falled in love with them as fast as you did ❤
Wonderful palette setup 😊 I’ve never tried that brand before - hmmm the blister packs are not my thing at all…… 😁
I wonder how they fair against Daniel Smith? 😃
Green eggs and ham!! 🤣 he ended up liking them in the end! 😆
The pyrrole red is the most intense lovely red I’ve ever seen.

how fun.. I have never tried these !!
Great and very inspiring and informative as akways. By the way, may youn tell us where did you got that tin can you used as palette?…🙏🏻
Why yes, of course! I just updated my description to have the amazon link 👍
@Pointebrush completely agree. Definitely affordable. Helps to wanting to paint. They are dreamy medical and easy to use even for beginners like me.
I Live on the Isle of Anglesey, North Wales, so my subjects are beach, sea, mountains and old ruins :)
@@Gothxuk Another question. Are you set on "essentials" and are looking for particularly unique interesting colors or are these to build a foundational set with?
Exciting or moody colours to enhance my palette, that are unique to the Roman Szmal range I must try :)
@@Gothxuk Ok for you, what comes to mind are Misty Morning, Autumn Green
Ocean Blue, Shadow Violet, Nickel Tungsten Yellow.
Not available in the US yet.
I order from Jackson’s in the UK. International shipping was less than $5 😱
Beautiful... thank you!
You’re most welcome! 🥰
they do the plastic bc the paper sticks so bad on the small ones it would just be in the pan. But still I'd prefer paper vs plastic too.
Pardon me if this sounds ignorant - do honey based watercolour paints attract ants/pests?
Not at all! It’s an excellent question. Yes it can attract bugs so if you live in a warm climate and you’re painting en plein air, this would probably not be a good choice. I would recommend it for a studio setting in that case 🌈
Thank you so much for this explanation. Gorgeous selection of colours by the way :)
You could research natural essential oils that deter ants. Buy some, then put a drop or two on a piece of cotton and leave it in your palette. Better to use a metal palette since natural essential oils eat away plastic.
You are so real!!
Why thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video 🙏
Yeah, while I have specific colors I love in other brands, if I could only use one brand it would be this one.
Actually Roman Szmal is my new favorite watercolors I like them even more than daniel smith
I love the 5 colors I have.
Which ones did you get?
@@Pointebrush ocean blue, potter pink, mineral violet, shadow gray, nickel yellow titanate (sp?). Love them all.
I want allll of these. I LOVE these paints and the 5 I have are just about empty.

Hahahaha apparently not in my house 😂🙃
Welcome to the Roman Szmal band wagon. 😊

@@SketchesnScrubs It's great to see you here too. 😊 I LOVE my Roman Szmal greens. 🥰
Watching you open these was painful. I’m just screaming at the tv: “You’re an artist! Do you not own a craft/xacto knife?!!” 😶😂😂
I know you shouldn’t NEED another product to open your product, but if it helps ease the painful process along, I’d take an extra 30 seconds to whip that bad boy out and get those suckers open!
Stay warm in chilly Blighty! x
Lol. I feel like you needed a cigarette after all that! But really, Roman Szmal is the paint daddy we all need right now.
It’s funny you say that because I think I said that at some point in my swatching session and had to edit it out so I didn’t get in trouble with UA-cam for promoting tobacco 😂
Lol. Public service announcement: “Don’t smoke, kiddos. Paint with Roman Szmal instead”.
