.....bu the floating Nike in the background 😂 dope!
🤣 it compensates for my boring videos 🤣
Much appreciated video! Recently got a 5V/3A powerbank and its been fine since, but always a worry. Glad to know I'm on the right path, and to discover the block on my dummy battery is a step-up transformer!
Thanks for covering up this topic, very good explanation!
Edit: ****still works in 2024 with latest firmware**** Followed your recommendations and used the linked dummy battery with dual USB (hot swappable?).and an ANKER 13000 battery. It did not work. As you pointed out to me I needed to switch to electronic shutter. At which point it worked as expected. Thanks for this solution! And your patience with those of us who watch and receive the goods many weeks later. Lol. Appreciate your channel very much!!
Nothing wrong with your setup, it works perfectly for video, and for photo you need to change a setting.
However if you go into your camera settings and change from mechanical to electronic shutter you’ll see it works perfectly 😉
I too got shocked when I tried to take a photo, which I don’t often do with my GH5 or GH5s, but just switch to electronic shutter and it won’t power off.
Money not wasted, you’re welcome 😉
This will help a lot when I get the GH5 or GH5s thanks brother for your professional look on the situation
Anytime man! Totally worth doing it this way especially for longer videos.
Thx for this super-helpful video. Did you make the gimbal/powerbank video? Thx! Subbed!
The rig look would def be a + to checkout mate as i was wondering that myself 😅🤩
Going to be awesome I promise. Waiting for a final piece 👌
Just to answer some questions I see in the comments: you have to worry about wattage. An xt3 can zip up to 18w of power when recording 4K@60, a budget external monitor will zip 6w, an Átomos Ninja V will consume 30w when working in full power. Having considered all of this, I use 3 different power banks based on what I need: a 22w compact pb from Xiaomi for run and gun with a small setup, for photo, a 55w for átomos and camera on tripod or gimbal, and a 65w oh when need to power camera, monitor, and portable lighting.
great ,super helpful video, thanks
thanks :G great info, and very helpful...
You’re welcome Ntando 👊
Hi Rich, when click the link for the dummy battery it is a dummy battery with 2 output usb heads, I was wondering if you order some specific one like the one that you are using in the video?
Great video, can you please give me a light on wich is the right power bank for a Canon 5DSR?
Hey, thanks for the vid, did you ever get the “This battery cannot be used”? I cant get around it… and yes the dummy battery contacts are clean
That is amazing. Will the GH6 (blk22) battery work on the GH5s (blf19e) camera?
I am curious. I have an Anker power core with a 5v 6A output. Do the 6A have a negative impact since they are higher than the 4A talked about from the power bank in this example?
Pv100 ke liye bhi dummy battry aata hai kya?
when I use a dummy battery with my GH5, it doesn't allow me to perform the custom white balance, any tips on this?
How about Battery Grip - with dummy in the add on grip... (genuine Grip apparently switches seamlessly in grip battery dies.)

Thank you for the tip.
What brand is your dummy battery, sorry?
Hey I have a Panasonic gf2 and the only coupler battery's I can find are 8.4v and 2a but there is a usb cable adapter that comes with it which is 5v so would it be ok?
Hey have you tried your set up on the GH5ii at all? Thanks
I have a very important question to which I am trying to obtain an answer to. I keep hearing from time to time that powering the GH5 via D-Tap will fry the camera. What's your say on the matter?
i have sony a6000 and i buy dummy battery and power bank mi 50w 20000mah... usb a single port going from 5v3a 9v2.23a 12v1.67a 10v2.25a. can i use without converter or not?
What is the right voltage from powerbank? 1A or 2,1 A, .. its 5V sure?
Hi tried the link provide by u in description but unfortunately it's landing to listing page can u please share the link for product page for Panasonic gh5s dc coupler
Hello, Lumix DC-S5II with
DC Dummy Battery Coupler for Lumix DC-S5/S5K Cameras Compatible with DMW DCC17
can be operated with 12V input?
Any ideas where the gimbal video companion is to this video? An subscribed but couldn't find it
Will this work with a Sony hx400v bridge camera
Hi. That was so useful. I will certainly be looking at a 3A per port Anker model for my Sony A5100. I am wondering about powering an external 5.5" focus monitor the same way. Have you ever tried powering 2 devices from the same power bank? People usually say that the output drops when you try this.
Glad it helped.
Yes, I have tried a dummy NPF battery to USB and plugged it onto my Osee T7 and it works, after brightness level 7 the dummy battery makes a little high pitched noise.
Strangely enough my Feelworld Lut7s doesn't work.
@@RICH_Photography Blast! I was looking at a Feelworld FW568. Strangely, I cannot find a dummy F970 battery with a USB input. Probably needs more power. Sigh! But many thanks for the advice.
It’s very odd…take a look at the Oder T7…way ahead of the field. ua-cam.com/video/48J6YC-Z-aY/v-deo.html
When is this gimbal rig video comin?
Can I use a powerbank to power the battery from the camera or will that harm it eventually?
i can't found dummy battery for my camera. does that video is the miracle solution i'm looking for ??
Amps, voltage, etc., and still no answer to my questions about the DC to USB cable that is not included with all dummy batteries.
I use the same method for Gopro ( and without internal battery )directly connected to power bank , I dont buy internal batteries anymore. but I have the new sony zv1, and I dont know if trying this method with zv1, mypower banks has 20000 and 2,1 amp. DO u know about this with zv1 ? thanks
The Standard Sony ZV1 battery requires 3.6V and 4.5Wh
In saying that the GH5 is 7.2V and 14Wh and I think that's why a very specific power bank is needed.
It may work using your 2.1amp power bank... The GoPro is similar with ZV1 as it's only 4.4V
3 years late but so glad i found your channel mate. Recently noticed my batteries. Starting to degrade. Desperate to use camera for longer periods for options budget friendly than v mount. With zero background on electronics I’m kind of scared to connect to power bank to the camera with the dummy battery.. still trying to understand how this whole conversion works. I’m a little slow learner… Please walk me through this.
Power banks, give 5V max and 2 to 4 amps depending on the power bank. But the GH5 needs 7.2 volts? Which is where the DC coupler comes in? Which will step up the voltage from 5 to 7.2 is that it?
Assuming I got this part right, here’s my main concern. Because the products you recommended, particularly the voltage step-up device. These aren’t readily available in my place so I have to look for alternatives with similar specs. And I am worried that these alternative product might fry my camera. So is there a way to check the voltage before connecting it to the camera risking every thing? how do I know whether these connectors and converters are working as expected. As i said earlier, I have zero knowledge in Electronics which is why I am super paranoid because if it fries the camera 😢😢 I cannot undo that.
I'm new to this too, what have you found out? so you can explain to me
I Followed your video and ordered the exact same thing. Arrived today (ANKER POWER BANK) Completely dead. charged it for 5-6 hours. Tried connecting it all together to the "T" With nothing powering up. What am I doing wrong.
Great channel!
I am using dummy battery on my canon r8. I plugged dummy battery on my samsung power bank (eb -p3300xjegeu). output 5v 3 A. And i can turn on the camera BIT when trying to take photo it says charge battery ???
You sad on your video that your first usb output will be ok (I think it is the same as myn)
any white noise with this method?
Thanks for the info, didn't know these existed! Possible to get them in SA?
You’re welcome, definitely, I ordered mine off the Amazon links in my description delivered to my door.
Local suppliers in SA don’t have these at all sadly.
I order 99% of my gear off Amazon, never have any issues, delivered to my door in JHB 👌
Thank you alot ! I have the same powerbank lol
The Anker powerbanks fit perfectly into the smallrig battery holders 👌
Does 6k photo mode (specifically) or stills mode work while using power bank?
It only works if you switch the shutter to electronic and not mechanical...if I'm not mistaken.
If you don't switch it over the camera powers off as you click the shutter.
wow what's it that shoe floating behind your back ?
I have a sony a6400. I was planning to buy a dummy battery with a long cable and just connect it to a powerbank in my bag... but now i am scared of frying my camera. Can you suggest some stuff that I can get?
in the same boat
Hello thanks for the links, I will purchase this stuff. Can you tell me your experience, please. When you will upload a new video about this topic. Thanks
I've been using this system for nearly 3 years now. I absolutely love it.
will this setup work for the gh5s also? dont want to fry my camera.
It definitely will, I use it most often on my GH5s on a gimbal.
Hi I'm from Pakistan I bought dummy battery for canon sl2. Power bank max out put 5v=2.1A
It doesn't work....why? Plz tell me...
2.1A is probably the problem. Check the dummy battery requirements
I bought a coupler for my canon 77d and all the 4 power banks i have have auto off feature which turns off after 30 seconds or 1 minute, there is no power bank in the market with no auto off feature, can u suggest a solution.
Strangely enough the Anker and Aukey batteries I have never turn off.
If you keep your camera powered on do they still turn off?
@@RICH_Photography no i discovered if i continuously do something with the camera it doesnt go off, but if i leave it ideally even if powered on it goes off after a few seconds. I have to do something on the camera to keep it turned on.
the question no one is asking.. why are power grips for cameras so expensive?
Why not use a V mount battery with a USB C port?
You need a USB C dummy battery.
Also, the V mounts work great, however they are pricey and the simplicity of a power bank suits the beginner to intermediate creator.
Hey brother! Good video! I have a GH6 and I'm thinking about using a powerbank like that with a dummy battery, but my doubt is: 5v 2A will turn on my GH6 with all its functions? I read on my DMW-BLK22 battery that it's specifications are 7.2v - 16Wh - 2200mAh. Will it work If I get only 5v via dummy battery? .............................. On the other hand, I've learned that I may power my GH6 via USB-C but on this particular case I need 9v and 3A so that I can turn the camera on AND charge the battery at the same time. Could you give me any advice about that? Thanks a lot! God bless you!
did you figure out a setup?
@@isaazam9145 hey Iza! What's up! Yes, I did. You need 9v and 3A. That's what you need to power GH6 via USB-C.
@@NatanRufino Hey Natan, thanks for your reply dude :D - Are you powering by the USB C then and not the dummy battery?
@@isaazam9145 Yes, exactly. I have a power bank from China that gives me 9v3A. I was thinking about the dummy battery because of the future Panasonic update when they will offer USB-C recording possibilities, but not now I'm using the USB-C only to charge the camera while I'm recording and everything's fine.
Can I just get an outlet adapter and plug it into the wall?
Not to sure, unless Panasonic makes an official one I wouldn't be using a wall plug.
I don't even have mirrorless cam but I'm enjoying
Thank you so much for the support 🙏
Can we plug that in my computer ?
I'd say no
Or get a Canon 5D classic and get it all on one battery and have spare for another job . Because it doesnt use a screen it has buttons for all functions so only time you need your screen is when you are reviewing images
I agree that DSLRs have amazing battery life. My Nikon D800 could shoot an entire wedding on 1 battery.
But when it comes to video, unfortunately even DSLRs had terrible battery life. Also those old 5D classics weren't shooting 4K 60 10 bit in video.
@@RICH_Photography yes , for video modern cameras are better , and video will eat up the batteries , i have Canon G1X 1080P 30fps i think but it has a function to turn off the screen .
You film weddings with 6' of wire dangling out of your camera?
No, I made a little box take all the wire and put a 1/4 screw through it.
Check this post, should give you an idea of the updated rig. But previously the box was the same on the other rig. Short cable running straight to the dummy battery.

I have two GH5s that I power by USB; however, I also have a GH5 ii which I power by USB. The difference is the GH5 ii does not use a dummy battery, the internal battery is still in place. That means, if the USB battery runs flat or becomes disconnected the internal battery takes over seamlessly. I think this is a great improvement.
Be careful you might fried your camera circuits
I had used anker power bank with my GH5 on many events shoot and have no issues whatsoever. I share my experience with using a power bank, you make sure when your power bank indicator show it has one dot power left. You better replace it immediately because there is no way to know how much power actually have left on the power bank. You will loose the video file if the power bank ran out of power while the camera in recording mode. Ask how I know.
