We Finally Bought a Tractor! | Kubota L47 Tractor Loader Backhoe

- We bought a used Kubota L47 tractor with loader and backhoe! We've never used a tractor before, but we have 25+ pine tree stumps to dig out of our offgrid house site before we can build. We specifically bought the Kubota L47 tractor with front loader and backhoe to be able to dig these stumps out. We also have plans to use the tractor for a myriad of tasks for our off grid house build.
In this video we learn the basics of driving the tractor and operating the front loader and backhoe. Some of us learn faster than others, but we eventually pick it up and manage to dig up a bunch of pine stumps. The tap roots on these pine tree stumps are just massive and we are glad we went with the Kubota L47 instead of the smaller B26 model.

A few hints from someone who had dug up thousands of stumps with a backhoe. If you are clearing trees do not cut them down. Dig a trench on one side then go around to the other side and push them over with the hoe. Fill the tractor bucket mostly full, pick the back wheels off the ground with the stabilizers and then push the bucket down enough to lift the front wheels off the ground, that will brace the tractor. Put the backhoe far enough away from the tree so the boom is about one third down and the stick is about two thirds extended with the bucket fully uncurled. Then push the boom and stick away from you. If you still have some stumps to dig it is quicker to dig the trench on one side and drive around to that side and pull the stump into the trench. If it won't go then dig on each side. I use both levers at the same time when puling, curl the bucket and pull in on the stick and pull up on the boom while swinging it left and right. Backhoes are tough, you won't hurt it. I am sure your wife is doing this but please make sure you know where each child is when using heavy equipment.

I'm sorry but as a full time heavy equipment operator with many years of experience do NOT lift your wheels off the ground other then to LEVEL and STABILIZE the machine they are called STABILIZERS not Jacks for a reason.
Lifting the wheels off the ground reduced contact with the ground it also puts more stress on the stabilizer legs and loader boom increasing risk of bending or braking them or the frames of the machine. Withe wheels on the ground you can use the park brake and have more contact on the ground as I said before to help prevent you from pulling or pushing the machine around with the bucket at the same time being able to increase your digging pushing pulling and lifting force with the backhoe. It will also decrease the wear and tear of the loader and bucket pins by putting less strain on them. Lowering your overall usage costs.
Pushing trees over with a small machine like this is a terrible idea and has a very high risk of a having the tree fall where you do not want it to go or worse yet fall back or snap half way and fall on the machine. If you have chain saw experience use that to fall your trees. Not your machine. I have seen lots of trees fall on machines and hurt operators. You life isn't worth the risk. Don't take stupid risks. A backhoe can be a very useful tool it can also be a very dangerous one in the wrong hands. Stay safe.
From what I saw in your video you were going ok take your time practice being smooth with fluid like movements. The speed will come on its own you won't have to even think about it. You were doing fine with the stumps take out the roots around the 4 sides of the stump you dint have to dig a trench just looseen the ground and cut or break all the roots up coming out around the sides. if there's any bigger longer roots shooting out from the stump consider leaving one attached to the stump to use as a lever to twist the stump and break it free from the ground and pull it out easier. If the stump roots shoot straight down like what I see in this video then you did good leaving the stump a bit higher above the ground you can use that to help wiggle the stump out if need be.
Seems like most homesteading/offgrid type channels go through the same progression. You have now reached tractor level, lol. Really enjoying watching your story.
Getting a tractor has always been part of the plan; However, we are also trying to stay debt free so big purchases like a tractor have to be strategically planned out. There are just so many things it will be used for around the homestead and for the house build.

Congrats on the new toy! You’ll find that it’s gonna be the best investment you can have for your property. I had to do a lot of clearing years ago with my B21 and it just saved so much time.

I’m enjoying your channel and especially your Kubota L47 videos. I’m hoping to be able to purchase the same backhoe for our 4.42 acres of land in Cochise County Arizona. I’m a retired union heavy equipment operator and ran backhoes for 34 years. I just wanted to suggest that when you all are digging stumps out or whatever, you really need to put the front bucket down on the ground. It really helps stabilize the machine especially when you have a payload of moist dirt in a big bucket and swing fast off to the side of your machine. Without the front bucket down to the ground you can tip the machine over. Just a little safety precaution. Great job on your videos and wishing your family a wonderful and safe life.

15.8 is great. Don’t overdo it. I’m speaking from experience. I tried to keep up with my tramily and it ended up taking me off trail.
Looks like y'all made a great investment for the homestead. Grease is key for the loader and backhoe (tractor) as a whole. Hope it serves yall well for a long time. If you were doing alot of stumping id recommend a thumb and a smaller bucket or a ripper. It's amazing what you can accomplish with this setup. Enjoy
Absolutely, I had it greased up when I bought it and plan on greasing frequently. I've put about 35 hours on it so far and I could tell it needed more grease when it started making squeeking noises...but good as new after I greased it up. I would like to put a grapple thumb on the backhoe but I think that will be a project for another day. Same for the front loader. It already has the third function hydraulic lines ran but I'd need to install the quick connect fittings and buy the implements.

Thanks, It has been an absolute workhorse! Will also be installing a three point hitch and using it with an 18 inch auger bit to dig the holes for the house footers.

Absolutely, I've put in about 37 hours already on the tractor and I don't have the hassle of picking up/delivering equipment. I just turn it on and go to work lol
