All Black Sabbath albums from the 70s are sacred. Effectively it was the band that created Heavy Metal. Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple also helped to create this musical style, but Sabbath is the main band in this regard. Sabbath: extraordinary excellence in every way.
all of the stylistic things that make metal metal, come from Tony Iommi. I hear people crediting Deep Purple and Zep too, and I love those bands, but they're just not metal. There's nothing much in those bands where you go, "that's metal, metal bands do that all the time". Tritones (other than a passing blue note), galloping palm muted pedal riffs, downtuning. Take a listen to Black Sabbath's first album in 1970. There is a sequence of songs that are basically one long song with different "sections" and "tempos", etc. which exists in basically every Black Sabbath song. It starts with "Warning" then "Sleeping Village" and "A Bit of Finger" This is what got me hooked on Black Sabbath. My favorite album is Vol. 4 which is genius. Love your reviews and analysis! and thank you for that!
5:20 Tony and Geezer started tuning to C Sharp on Master of Reality to experiment (most credit it to trying to ease the strain on Tony's wounded fingers but that is apocryphal I believe), so their sound got even heavier!
You're correct on that. I can't find the interview now, but Tony has talked about this and they started tuning down around this time to help ease the strain on Ozzy's voice. He then said it didn't work, because Ozzy just started singing higher! Looking at live boots from around this tour they had been tuning down various amounts from show to show - half-step down, whole step down, and of course they eventually settled on three half-steps by the time they recorded MoP. (Then, of course, they went back to standard for Technical Ecstasy...)
This was the 'Garage-turned-party-den' theme song. Old couch, blacklight posters, cable spool table... 3 or 4 rips from the bong... I'm 15 again (for a minute). Thanks Doug.

It proceeded After Forever, my very favorite track from this recording & a direct thumb in the eye of all those who call Sabbath evil. Thanx.
I love this album, it's the reason I play in C. The tone is so powerful, the jams are so catchy. They're secretly a heavy blues, funk band. Listen to some of the breakdowns, bill Ward and Geezer bring it.
In my early 30's I had severe stomach pain, turned out to be gall stones. This was the mid 80's so it required major surgery. The surgeon showed me the stones, 3 were about 1/2" diameter along with many smaller pieces. He wondered how I stood the pain that size stone would cause, didn't tell him I was staying quite high.
For real. I never tried it until college. I remember lying between the speakers of my stereo and listening to a "Hearts of Space" CD. I felt transported and very giggly. It was fucking awesome. I "highly" recommend their CD series. Their stuff is amazing and very random, so you never know what is coming. All good.
Few bands have had the amount of influence that Sabbath has had on popular music and in addition, few bands have had members that complimented each other so well playing and composing music. The foundation of it all is, of course, the amazingly powerful yet melodic riffs of the Master, Tony Iommi.
I didn't realise that you were unfamiliar with the origins of the band. It was Tony's final day at work when he was asked to cover for an absent colleague and use a cutting machine. This was when he cut his fingertips off. He constructed false tips himself by melting down plastic bottles but because of the pain caused by pressing the guitar strings he experimented with lower tunings to reduce the string tension. Another interesting little fact you may not be aware of is that Tony was briefly a member of Jethro Tull. He didn't stay long (he can be seen playing with them in the film of "the rock n roll circus" ) but he was so impressed with Ian Anderson's work ethic, he went back to Sabbath and made the band practice rigorously and develop a more professional approach to their playing.
There's a few reactions to this song on YT. To be honest, I'd have expected more, but at least some are there. Great that Doug is doing this, even if it's at 4am my time. So great to hear you analyse this. I have the original LP and of course it was slightly more difficult and expensive to get hold of weed in 1971, plus I was only 16 then! I was taught to open my mind to music by my composer uncle and that worked just as well. Later, well that was a different story when I enjoyed a joint or two. Far too old now to indulge.

I love this album, it's the reason I play in C. The tone is so powerful, the jams are so catchy. They're secretly a heavy blues, funk band. Listen to some of the breakdowns, bill Ward and Geezer bring it.
Well that was the best Black Sabbath reaction you've done. Because of the props.
Didnt know that about the cough. Awesome. I've had this album for about 30 plus years. Amazing what you can find out on the internet, eh.
BLACK SABBATH HEAVEN AND HELL just turned 42! Give Heaven and Hell a listen! DIO DIO DIO!
For real. I never tried it until college. I remember lying between the speakers of my stereo and listening to a "Hearts of Space" CD. I felt transported and very giggly. It was fucking awesome. I "highly" recommend their CD series. Their stuff is amazing and very random, so you never know what is coming. All good.
One of my all time favourite Black Sabbath songs!
cheers, my man. God bless you and all of us!
Few bands have had the amount of influence that Sabbath has had on popular music and in addition, few bands have had members that complimented each other so well playing and composing music. The foundation of it all is, of course, the amazingly powerful yet melodic riffs of the Master, Tony Iommi.
Not going to lie; you pulling that bong out of nowhere caught me off-guard. Awesome!!
Black Sabbath are an amazing band to see in concert.
The sweet leaf will ensure I'm sound asleep at that time!
Hope you all enjoy the song, the great mans' reaction, and....whatever else ;-)
Doug my friend......im liking this 4:20 side of you .....explains the open minded brilliance in you sir
TY Doug! Loved it. For me the Penultimate "trippy" Sabbath is of course "Planet Caravan," from the iconic album Paranoid.
You said it, Doug. Heavy, no bullshit. In my day, Black Sabbath united friends with different musical tastes. So does weed.
it's nice to see you really starting to open up and relax more and enjoying ing The Rock the way that it was meant to be
Way to go Doug!!! I didn't know you were that cool! Cheers from Puerto Rico!!! For next year, do Fly High Again with Randy Rhoads!!!
Great video! One of my favorite Sabbath tunes. Really enjoyed hearing you talk about how cannabis opened you up to meditation and mindfulness.
And as I always comment on your videos, please do Reba by Phish from 10/31/94!!!
As a generations deep farmer from Indiana, raising and consuming "weed" was common in my area...at least I thought it was. I also thought everyone listened to The Godz, Black Sabbath, Black Oak Arkansas, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin and such. Blowing the smoke into the camera with a 😏 (smirk)...top notched....
Watching this being played - LIVE - oh boy!
One of my all time favourite videos.
I love how you explained the experience of Pot.
Beautiful! Thank you ⚘️
Quality music, host and content. Just love to spend the odd time here with you Doug.
You should listen to some Brand x sometime, I think you would like it.
Happy 4/20 Doug! Thank you for your work
9:20 I love this guy trying to describe being "high," lmfao!!
Happy 420 from Germany 💚 Great Episode!
Dough will end up as the craziest metal head on this planet 😁🥇🏅🥇🏅🥇♥️
Thanks Doug for the reaction and your openness
Thank you. I saw you loosen up. I love it, too much
"You alright?! I learned it by watching you!"
Next year, Passage to Bangkok. RUSH. 👍🏻😊👊🏻
I love this channel Mr. Doug. I have Zero Musical talent and consider myself Tone Def. I do love listening to Hard Rock Music though. Songs just gotta have a hook. My Playlists are Extensive on my Phone. I don't Understand Doug's analysis in an educated sense but, I get the gist of it. Thats what makes Doug special. You give me understanding.
Doug, you have to stop doing that 🤣🤣 !!! Every time you inhale, I do too ... and unfortunately, I'm not "with", if you know what I mean and don't know anyone to "be with" anymore, if you know what I mean 🤣🤣. Seriously, love the reaction. It was a hoot. Been loving this song since it came out.
Your fans don’t know Black Sabbath like they should!!
SYMPTOM OF THE UNIVERSE
LONELY IS THE WORD

WICKED WORLD

Happy Holidays, boys and girls!
