Stallone has said that in an interview that he was depressed during that Oscar night because he wanted to take his mother to the ceremony but wouldn’t go unless they could bring her hairdresser (I think) and so he was sad the whole ceremony despite Rocky winning Best Picture
The thing with Diane Warren Is that her nominations are usually the film's only nomination. She needs to work with bigger productions if she wants to win
Yeah. That and it’s painfully obvious that she pretty much manufactures these nomination opportunities due to her status. I think everyone knows she wants the Oscar and when you add it all up, it’s kind of a turn off for a lot of voters.
I'm so happy you called Peter Finch's performance an all timer, I could not agree more. His win is one of the best of all time in any category at the Oscars
Yeah, don’t get me wrong. As much as Rocky holds a place in my heart, Network was more deserving of awards. Well, except for Best Actress. I think Sissy Spacek should’ve won the award for Carrie over Faye.
@@markelijio6012A great honor indeed, but after her body of work, she deserved a televised moment in real time, of wining a Best Actress Oscar…this is looonnnggg overdue!!!🤦🏽♀️⌛️🤷🏽♀️
Meryl Streep's is a perfect example of what happens when the Academy gives you your flowers, and any other award is a plus. I feel she would have been just as happy for Viola Davis.
3:32 In 1985, all three leading actresses were nominated for their roles as country women. Jessica has said that she felt that her and Sissey Spacey's films had a better message and content than Sally Fields's. So you can see that she would have been happy when Robert introduced Sissey Spacek, I think she would have been happy and convinced if Sissey had won that night. And in May 2024, she said that Geraldine Page and Kim Stanley were two actresses who influenced her acting, she learned acting from them so she easily said Geraldine Page's name when the introducer said "the greatest actress in English movies". Anyway, I think you should add the part where Jessica Lange lost the Oscar to Jessica Tandy in 1990 instead of this one. Because she freaked out for a second when Gregory Peck said "Oscar goes to Jessica...", which was funny! lol
If Brian does another “Best Oscar Announcements” , I hope that it includes back when Anne Bancroft announced the Oscar win to Sidney Poitier for Best Actor in “Lillies Of The Field”! Sidney Poitier made history by being the first black actor to win the Oscar and Anne’s warm embrace to Sidney was controversial at the time. Seeing a white women exchanging polite kisses on the cheek to a black and her showing genuine happiness for him caused an outrage during the 1960’s Civil Rights Era! Anne Bancroft did not care about the controversy and she was in the right side of history and that moment is forever captured on film!
I know it is slightly outside of the scope of these videos, but Billy Crystal’s reaction to Robin Williams winning in 1998 should be an honourable mention in any best supporting actor video.
Diane Warren. Oof. She’s been around a long time & must know some VIP’s in the music branch. That can only explain the annual nominations for such obscure films.
Another fun video and I love that you have that Meryl reaction at #1. You can tell that they love each other dearly as Meryl gave her the induction speech for her Icon Award at this year's iHeartRadio Awards ❤
River Phoenix, the year he was nominated and lost for Running on Empty to Kevin Kline for A Fish Called Wanda, you can look carefully at him that he rousingly cheered about Kline's win.
I just realized we need a Top 10 Meryl Streep Oscar losing reactions. 🤭 Btw, I just love the joy from Emma Stone when her costar Olivia won the Oscar. That's a genuine happy moment.
Glenn Close definitely should have won the Oscar for "Fatal Attraction" over Cher for "Moonstruck.". Cher was much better in "Mask" in 1985, but she wasn't even nominated for that role. They probably just gave the Oscar to Cher to make up for that, lol.
Moonstruck is an iconic American film and Cher delivered a great performance. She was great in Silkwood too. She deserved the win. It’s a beautiful performance. I know there is always frustration with some “career wins” that are not the best picture of a person’s work, and villains are notoriously hard to root for. Glen Close is a terrific risk taker, which makes her a very good actress. Does she deserve a career win? Sure. Like Amy Adams and many other actresses.
Great video. It's odd when everyone expects the loser narrative to prevail and give the Oscar to Glenn Close or Lauren Bacall when, in hindsight, they lost to better performances. Also, what the hell is Sylvester Stallone so grumpy about losing as a first time actor to Peter Finch's all-time great performance? (And not to mention De Niro in Taxi Driver!) He only went on to make an entire career about the same movie and then, AGAIN, be disappointed to be snubbed for playing the same role in Creed!
Love this. You really know your Oscars. The Sylvester Stallone is my favorite. I came across that clip years ago, and thought it was hilarious. He's clearly blown away that they gave it to Finch, and seemingly surprised that he didn't win. Kind of egotistical, if so, being that he was literally the new kid on the block. I wanted to draw attention to a loser reaction that doesn't really qualify, as it happens before the winner is announced, although the same actor does give a memorable reaction afterwards, too. To me, it's one of the funniest reactions, ever, and I've NEVER come across any mention of it, which tells me that almost no one noticed. It's for Best Supporting Actress 1992 , one of the biggest upsets, all time, to the point of ensuing "conspiracy theories", as you well should know. Before the winner is announced, Jack Palance tells that terrific joke about how this is the first time in Academy history that FIVE foreign actresses were nominated in the same category, "Four from England, and one from Brooklyn". Truly funny, though it has one problem, and if you pay attention to Judy Davis (who was, as I recall, the odds-on favorite to win), she points out the flaw. You can clearly see her say "I'm not British", and then sort of laugh and shrug it off, because, yeah, she's Australian. Then, when Marisa Tomei is announced as the winner, she also gives a very notable shocked reaction, not ungracious, like Stallone, just shocked, which is a great stand-in for everyone's surprise. Anyway, it's so great, and the irony is delicious, again, because it's such a great joke that turns out to be wholly innacurate.
Dianne Warren is not happy. Too bad. Maybe if she writes a decent song from a movie that was actually seen, then maybe sh'd have a chance. Her songs tend to be some sappy ballad that all sound alike to be played over the end credits. Her entitlement is showing big time
In 1978, what Emmy and Grammy winning composer Mike Post who wrote: "It was a weird thing - like I have no choice." Film music gives them a chance to hear something with lots of freedom and control. Starting with Oscar and Grammy winning theme song from the 1977 film, "You Light Up My Life" at Columbia - Delphi in 1978.
Poor Glenn Close has had a lot of practice being on the losing side, and she's always so gracious in defeat. It's about time the Acadeny gave her the Oscar she's deserved all these years.
I love your videos as they make me go back and revisit movies I have not thought about in a long time. That 1985 best actress category was interesting. It could be just me and I love love Sally Field but I just didn't think her performance in Places in the Heart was Oscar worthy. I can't pinpoint why just there were not any standout moments in the movie. Everyone has an opinion and that is why we watch your videos. Keep up the good work.
gosh the dianne warren one bums me out. I definitely don’t think her song should have been the one to win that year, but neither should billie’s tbh - the academy hypes her up way too much. imagine someone who wasn’t even born for your first oscar nomination winning one their first try.
It’s great when they are happy that they lost and are worked for the person who actually did win like Anne Hathaway was. When Leo was nominated (and finally won) for the revenant the entire place stood up and cheered and gave him a standing ovation becuase it was literally “FINALLY”.
I feel like a lot of the "enthused" reactions are kinda to hide a slight disappointment. I know they don't look "fake"- but it's also an easy way to still look like a respectful NOT sore loser. I feel like the super enthused reactions when people lose always look too try hard. That's just me though. LOVE your vids. My fave reactions are always Jessica Lange. She is the Queen.
There’s also that William Holden reaction when Peter Finch won. That bittersweet look of being happy that his co-Star won but was no longer alive to accept it. I don’t think he seemed upset that he lost. I think that’s a very unique reaction
Justin Henry’s losing reaction for Kramer vs Kramer is priceless. Always gets overlooked in these compilations lol. It’s so raw and real. Also, Jessica Chastains loss to Octavia Spencer is wonderful. She’s so happy for her. And Viggo Mortensen’s delayed reaction to Rami Malek is worthy. Or Shirley MacLaine’s loss to Diane Keaton. Priceless. Or Geraldine Page losing to Jane Fonda or Quinn Cummings losing to Vanessa Redgrave Vol 3? lol
I see where you’re going with that. However, the aim of these compilation isn’t to shame or ridicule. I think if it were to be called Worst Reactions I’d understand. To say it shouldn’t be included just because he was a kid is almost like saying he shouldn’t be nominated because he’s a kid. He’s competing with all the rest and treated equally. My 2 cents
Neither Sylvester Stallone or Peter Finch deserved to win in 1976. The best actor that year was William Holden for 'Network'. He's better than Finch because you get to know who the character is because his character goes through an series of emotions and the character is fully developed. Finch is a one dimensional character who does little more than rant and rave throughout the entire picture.
This was a FAR better list than the first list👍🏽 IMO, the top Oscar losing reaction of all time, was LA LA LAND losing Best Picture to MOONLIGHT. This could also be a video: “Top 10 Worst On-Air Blunders”🤔
Baby Lauren looked like she wanted to kill Juliette. But I can’t blame her like imagine winning all but one award and then lose. I don’t have that kind of maturity.
Cher is a good actress but she wasn't even in the Top 2 when we talk about greatest performances from 1987. . Glenn Close's role was much harder and more emotional. There was no even competition there. It will always be a well-known Academy mistake.
@@irina1296 I agree. Glenn Close's role in "Fatal Attraction" took a lot more acting ability than Cher's role in "Moonstruck." In my opinion, Cher's greatest roles were in "Mask" and "Silkwood.". Cher was nominated for "Silkwood", but not for "Mask," which was a mistake by the Academy to not at least nominate her for that. I'm glad Cher got an Oscar, but it shouldn't have been for "Moonstruck."
Now Why in God's Name Would She Something Like That? You know, I'm feeling sorry for her. Really I do. If there's no love in film music, nobody in the world won't be able to song at all. Rudy Iraheta asks me if I can sing and I say, "I'll tried just a little bit." And she was fair enough to understand. I did a lot of vocals on my CD player because I was a great fan of many wonderful artists such as Judy Rodman, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, Patsy Cline, Earl Thomas Conley, Alabama, Sylvia, Mandy Barnett, Highway 101, Deborah Allen, The Judds, David Frizzell, Monica Mancini, Celine Dion and more. That's one of the reasons why I have a beautiful mind, a great sense of humor and most of all, a brilliant point of view. So it's easy to see why I can practice even better to sing along without losing my temper. But it helps me relaxed a whole lot more - just like at home! That's All.
Diane Warren should start creating more memorable songs. She recycles everything, even her wardrobe lol. Srly the Music branch voting for noms should change ASAP.
I’m sorry but I don’t think someone should win a competitive Oscar simply because they are a legend and “let’s give them one already.” Lauren Bacall’s performance in The Mirror has Two Faces, was a fine performance in a meh movie that was panned by critics. It was not deserving of a nomination let alone a win.
It’s monday morning quarterbacking by the academy when they realize they had good opportunities to award the actor or actress in the past and overlooked doing so. They think they can make up for it with these “legacy” nods. Stanwyck was always robbed of a competitive oscar because she wouldn’t play ball with the studio system, and they ended up giving her an honorary one around 1981
Stallone didn't really have any reaction - he looked exactly the same before and after the announcement. Really he looked in a compete daze the whole time. Not disrespectful but out somewhere in space.
I could watch like 20 of these videos. Underrated/unexpected reaction is Glenn when Meryl won for The Iron Lady. She is shocked but looks absolutely thrilled. Though that reaction isn’t well documented because for some reason the Academy UA-cam video starts right as Meryl takes the stage. Lame.
Stallone didn’t expect to win at all, he’s said so in various interviews due to him being a complete nobody in the industry until Rocky, so with that success he had, it was unexpected, just like the multiple Academy Award nominations the film got, especially when the film won Best Editing, Best Director and especially Best Picture. It could have been he expected someone like Robert De Niro to win, so when Peter Finch was announced as the winner, he was surprised to hear Finch’s name instead. Also, Russell Crowe never punched anyone at BAFTA, he went to who was in charge of that years ceremony, trashed the place and yelled at the guy for cutting his speech off.
As a Gaga fan, I agree with the Glen Close, Gaga reaction theory! Glen apparently is close with Gaga and her family and I think many expected Glen to win
Here's the deal: don't look fake happy, don't look straight up pissed. It's fine to look disappointed and politely clap. These two thing, to me, come off as genuine. It's not fake to clap to someone who deserves. It's not fake to be disappointed. And all in all, it's charming to lose with grace. You're not all of a sudden a bad actor because you lost an award. And trust me, being deemed as a bad actor is way worse than losing a trophy.
Diane Warren reactions are a reason alone to watch the oscars. My favourite Warren reaction was when H.E.R.won. Diane's reaction was one of total contempt.

Diane Warren reaction is like: "I wish I was dead" LOL
Now Why in God's Name Would She Something
Like That?
You know, I'm feeling sorry for her. Really I do.
If there's no love in film music, nobody in the
world won't be able to song at all.
Rudy Iraheta asks me if I can sing and I say,
"I'll tried just a little bit." And she was fair
enough to understand.
I did a lot of vocals on my CD player because
I was a great fan of many wonderful artists
such as Judy Rodman, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa,
Patsy Cline, Earl Thomas Conley, Alabama,
Sylvia, Mandy Barnett, Highway 101,
Deborah Allen, The Judds, David Frizzell,
Monica Mancini, Celine Dion and more.
That's one of the reasons why I have a
beautiful mind, a great sense of humor
and most of all, a brilliant point of view.
So it's easy to see why I can practice
even better to sing along without losing
my temper. But it helps me relaxed
a whole lot more - just like at home!
That's All.
I immediately thought of Angelica Houston.
Have you ever mentioned Sally Kirklands losing reaction to Chers win that night? That reaction deserves its own Oscar.
Diane Warren should start creating more memorable songs. She recycles everything, even her wardrobe lol. Srly the Music branch voting for noms should change ASAP.
Keaton 100% should have won over Redmayne. It’s not even close.
Hard to believe Stallone and Talia Shire didn't win for Rocky 1976.
Glenn Close was robbed. She should have for fatal attraction. She played Cher. That’s why I stopped watching
Merryl Streep is amazing in every way
Stallone should've won best supporting actor. Typical politics at work
I’m sorry but I don’t think someone should win a competitive Oscar simply because they are a legend and “let’s give them one already.” Lauren Bacall’s performance in The Mirror has Two Faces, was a fine performance in a meh movie that was panned by critics.
It need a Diana warren and the exclusive oscar video for that.
She gets overlooked.
Another two that also good reactions from the losers are Ana de Armas and Andrea Riseborough in the year.
I bet everyone knew the reasons why. 😁
Go check out river phoenix losing to Kevin Kline
In the 10th time, it already proves it that someone deserves a win, but 15 times and nothing
Diane Warren reactions are a reason alone to watch the oscars. My favourite Warren reaction was when H.E.R.won. Diane's reaction was one of total contempt.
Jessica Lange deserved an Oscar for that side-eye alone.
Denzel wasnt annoyed. Man was holding back tears. He thought he xouldve won for a performance that means the world to him. He shoulda won
So… Im starting to think that the Oscars was the first reality show, before there were reality shows.
It still hurts seeing Glenn Close lose that one.😢
Meryl is always the best option, even when losing 😂❤
Sorry Sylvester, Peter finch’s performance is one of greatest of all time
I would like to know to what God Eddie Redmayne sacrifices to so that he has a career, let alone won that Oscar.
