Freeway Interchange Stealth Camping

  • Back to the classics! I finally found a great camping spot in a freeway interchange. This has been on my camping list for a while, but I needed to find the perfect stealthy interchange. Crazy neighbor kindly dropped me and my camping gear off and then picked me up in the morning. I tried out a disposable grill and had a blast sleeping beside the roar of the traffic.

When I and an old friend did a Georgia to California unsupported bicycle tour back in the early 90s, we became masters of stealth camping. These videos are wonderful, as they take me back to those days of my youth. To this day, as I'm driving in awful freeway traffic, I find myself looking into patches of woods off the road and thinking what a great stealth camping site this one or that one would be. My next phase will be when I finally purchase a dual purpose motorcycle. Something I can dip off the highway and camouflage with a tarp or the like. I'm itching to relive those camping memories!

Here's a hint for having a stealthier fire: Dig a hole in the ground for the BBQ or even just to light a regular fire. That way, the flames can get taller before they get to where someone can see them. For that BBQ, I don't think you'd even have to go full Dakota fire pit and dig a ventilation hole on the side or anything.
I have made Dakota fire pits several times and they work really well! They basically only smoke when they're first getting started and then they burn so hot that they stop smoking. The other nice thing about them is that you don't have to put as much wood in them to keep them burning. Then, when you're done with the fire, it's easy to just put the dirt right back to cover the hole and it leaves no trace that anyone ever made a fire there. You can always tell when the fire is completely out by seeing if the soil is still hot and that way you know how much water to put on it. It's nice for the plants in the area too because ash is good nutrients for them and plus you'll be watering the plants too when you go to douse the fire. Dakota fire pits are absolutely my favorite fire pits.

Back in the 70's I spent a couple years hitchhiking cross-country, and would basically have to find a place to sleep if I couldn't get a ride. I found that these interchange forests were actually very good options, if large enough, and safer than wandering off the highway where you were most likely to be found and harassed by locals or cops. depending on where in the country you are, these mini forested areas can be pretty big and also isolated.

An actual survival situation where a car is stranded, say in the mountains. You can see trees, but everything is covered in snow. Boughs down, one of those, light that gizmo and use it for your fire's base. It's hot enough to melt snow off the wood you've put around it as a wind break and reflector. As you get wood dryish, you can add it on top of the charcoal. FYI, I keep a picnic sized charcoal grill to use as a fire bowl and several one pound lots of charcoal, vaccume packed with a paper inner bag that has some tinder in it, in the back of my rig when travelling, especially in winter.

I have a friend from England who has made two around-the-world solo, unsupported bicycle trips. He sells nearly everything he owns to finance each trip, checks out of his rental place, and sets off with no schedule, no reservations, and the goal of spending money only when necessary to fly in order to get to the next continent. Improvises the trips on-the-fly. Lives off the land. Usually gets fed for free by people he meets, and usually stealth camps (usually in places where that is prohibited)....just finds a likely spot, nips off into the woods or whatever, and pitches his tiny tent. He nearly drowned one time when it turned out he had pitched his tent over a high pressure pop-up arrigation/sprinkler head, which flooded his tent in seconds. Another time found that he was right next to a cliff that he did not see in the dark. Another time found that he had camped along the edge of an army gunnery range, in the line of fire had he not quickly cleared out after sunrise. Was accosted by Turkish military in the middle of the night, thought they might really cause him trouble, but ended up drinking with them and becoming buddies. Sneaking across borders past sleeping guards in the wee hours, since he did not have the necessary visas. Being hidden from the authorities by locals he befriended. The stories are endless. But I would rather listen to his stories than do crazy stuff like that myself.

These highway ones are totally my favourites - I'm always driving along in the car these days thinking - there's a good highway camping spot, and another, and another. I guess it's because they seem like places that no one has ever gone before. I mean who would wander around or camp in a load of trees completely inaccessible to most people? That said I remember sitting in the branches of a tree next to a motorway one time and some car went past with the passenger just resting their head back and staring out the window as the car moved along, but I saw them do a double take because they obviously clocked me, and I wondered what it must be like to be in their seat seeing some random person in a tree in a place that seems completely inaccessible.

Steve, for years I've spotted parcels of land, small groves of trees along the highways that looked like great "stealthy" camping spots.
I feel your socal anxiety about being discovered. But you have a legitimate reason for "trespassing" on land. You're a UA-cam star! Be confident that even if you are discovered, you belong there.
There should be a way to build a stealthier campfire...
So sorry to hear about your wife, man. That has to be a kick in the gut. I hope you find renewed interests and convictions. Jess will always be with you. Talk to her...or scream at the sky!

In the 1970s, I hitchhiked across the USA. Camped in Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Washinton State, Montana, and South Dakota, but the craziest time was in Iowa during a tornado. I had to go up an embankment to the underneath side of the highway. A few cars stopped, and the drivers joined me.

This video made me miss Alberta. I lived in Ontario, Canada for 22 years and moved back to Central Europe almost 2 years ago.. same amount of time I spent in Alberta when I worked in the oil patch. Hated at times but looking back I have some very fond memories of that place. When you mentioned Nisku it made me remember all the times I drove to Edmonton from Hardisty and how much I love that city. In the unlikely scenario that I return to Canada, Edmonton is where I am headed.
