      You guys are really knocking it out of the park. I chose the C3 Tradition Black in the 36mm option for two reasons. First and foremost I just love a 36mm watch and secondly because it has that Explorer ref 1016 vibe and whats not to love about that. I am not a huge fan of quartz but I just love the watch that I can over look that. Hoping to see an automatic version in the C3 soon.

    I do like like the simplicity and legibility of the designs. You can find those traits in many Timex watches as well (at half the price), but the build quality is not as good as Vaer’s probably is. Thanks for reviewing this one!

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому +2

      I think their quartz watches are somewhere in between Timex's higher priced models (waterbury) and a Hamilton. So I think I said in my review that it was great for someone who loved their timex, but just wanted a step up in quality. I'm glad to see they followed that almost perfectly with an auto version.

    Latest update from VAER:
    Lume - As shared, we’ve finalized lume across the line:
    Dirty Dozen, Field Black, and Heritage Black will have C3 Superluminova on hands, dial, and logo :)
    Design White and Design Navy will have BGW9 Superluminova across hands, dial, (and logo for Design Navy)
    A few changes we’ve made to the cases from the original samples:
    Increased crown from 6x3mm to 7x3mm - this caused in increase in case thickness of 0.3mm to accommodate the larger crown.
    Increased top crystal “seat” area from 1.00 to 1.30mm depth. The production designers recommended this increase to further guarantee water resistance over time.
    Updated caseback from mineral to sapphire crystal - in making this change, designers increased “seating” area for crystal by 0.3mm to nest the crystal deeper into the case - this also increases water resistance reliability over time.
    Final Case / Watch Thicknesses.
    ETA 2895 - 9.4mm case thickness, 10.4mm total thickness with domed sapphire crystal
    ETA 2824 - 9.8mm case thickness, 10.8mm total thickness with domed sapphire crystal
    Miyota 9015 - 9.9mm case thickness, 10.9mm total thickness with domed sapphire crystal
    Pre-Order Live on Site - We’ve started selling the automatic line for “Pre-Order” on our site at 15% off of retail. If you have friends or family interested in picking up a watch, this is an opportunity to pick one up at a discount (though not as discounted as you received in the Kickstarter!)

    Very helpful review. As I mentioned in another comment I am interested in trying an automatic. I like that this one is hackable and windable. Really like that it is only 10mm thick. A bit pricey and makes it tempting to try a cheaper one like the Seiko first. But concerned that would just be a short term hasty move. Sometimes we are better off saving money going for what we really want even if we have to wait longer.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  4 роки тому +1

      That's always the trick when you get into anything. Do you save up or Jump into it...
      For entry-level I think your on the right track with some of the Seiko 5s. One suggestion would be to look around for some after Christmas sales. Leading up to Christmas I saw some of the new Seiko 5s (5kxs) on sale for around $170. They would make a pretty good all-around watch.
      ua-cam.com/video/eFvHG9nIKMs/v-deo.html
      Along the same lines, you can usually find an Orient Mako II or Ray II for around $130. It doesn't have sapphire, but otherwise pretty good. You can occasionally find the Mako USA II model for sale for $200. As well as the Kamasu which does have a sapphire. I really recommend those.
      If you are not looking for a diver another option is the Orient Bambinos. Depending on which one they are a bit dressy or casual. Those are a little less than the Mako IIs. You could also check ebay for a like-new one as well. The Bambino I have I got for about $80 on eBay.
      There is also the Vostok or Chinese Aliexpress route too. Wher you could get something for about $60-70ish. A little complicated though.
      The key thing is to look for a design you like, then you just have to try it. One thing I always try to do is check resale value on eBay as well. Just in case I don't like it I know how much I might loose if I sell it.

    • @snowpuppy77
      @snowpuppy77 4 роки тому

      @@RelativeTime Really appreciate the thoughtful advice. One thing for sure is that you have put Orient on my radar. These Japanese brands are easy to admire. The Japanese mindset results in wonderful watches, cameras, and phono cartridges among other things. Such good attention to detail and insistence on quality.
      As I keep watching will keep you posted on what I end up trying.

    I don't mind the Miyota movement--they're nothing to write home about, but I found them to be reliable work horses. The dial on this white dial version is beautiful. Only thing I'd change would be to make the hour and minute hands black (or possibly heated blue) instead of chrome. Overall, you can see that Vaer did their homework as far as the design goes--classic and retro

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому

      They seem to do a good job listening to their customers. They have been planing this for over a year just trying to get it right. For me, the best part of the miyota is how thin it is. Which if taken advantage of, can give you a nice thin watch.

  • @friscokid66
    @friscokid66 5 років тому +1

    The white dial might have looked so much better if the lume on the both font and hands had more of a yellowish tone-as of now the two doesn’t match. I also agree with the Vaer logo being a little too sparse. Other wise, this is still a good looking watch with descent movement and price.

    Unlike other companies, Vaer doesn’t imply that the watch is 100% USA-made. 👍🏿

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому +1

      "American Assembled" is the clearest I've seen it. At least without getting to wordy like Shinola now. Ginault is most likely the most confusing (although that is in question now). The hard part for american companies is that it's hard to compete with "swiss made" that isn't 100% swiss.

    It definitely looks like the inspiration was the Nomos Club, which I totally respect. Good pricing and quality, and I'm happy this kind of modern, interesting minimalism is becoming more popular. Just wish it was a 38, as 48 lug to lug is too large for me :/

    I have the quartz (1st) model. Have owned it for many months now. Love the case and it is held up well. Don’t really feel the need to get the mechanical as my Hamilton fills that niche. Vaer Was originally a strap company that has branched out into watches. I mention that because the quality of the Horween leather straps Is the best I have ever seen/owned. The two piece is actually a little thick for this watch in my opinion...but...I have swapped it to at least a half a dozen watches and again… It is the best I have ever seen/owned. I now have both a single pass and the two piece. I may buy the mechanical version just to get the Horween strap in black! Thanks for the great review, as always...Relative Time, and Just one more watch. My 1 and 1A channels!

    As a fellow Californian (Santa Barbara), I totally support Vaer. My preference would be for the ETA model. I also have no problem with their quartz models. I'm getting the white version, not as an alternative to a Hamilton, but rather as a compliment to one. I'm kind of a nutcase with this sort of thing, but I like to have a light faced and a dark faced watch in each lets say level of formality. This fits perfectly into the versatile, casual, sporty level, right alongside a black faced Hamilton Field Auto.
    I gotta say it's been pretty hard to find a watch to fill that niche, white faced watches of this kind are few and far between. And they tend to be a bit cheap and tacky, like a lot of entry level Orients and Seikos. And if they're a decent quality and they actually look good, they're usually either too big (Martenero Kerrison), or too dressy (Certina DS Podium). This Vaer is GODSENT, I just hope that they're still available by the time I finish saving up for it.

    Nice and clean, though personally not a fan of numerals on the dial. Not sure everyone will resonate with the South Cali connection. I also think the "American Assembled" will appeal to some, but certainly not all. Not sure that particular statement on the dial is associated necessarily with quality. But it looks a nice clean dialled watch and I'm sure whoever gets one won't be disappointed. Thanks for the review

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому

      The SoCal connection is very subjective. I wanted to mention it here, as I mentioned in the Heritage Dark video. Personally I'm not sure "American Assembled" means better quality as much as just an extra cool factor. Something some will care about, and others wont. For me it's also the novelty that someone would do that in LA. Cost of living there is insane, so one of the last places I would expect it. Although Nodus does the same thing.

    Nice to see a USA assembled watch. I have a Nodus Avalon which is also assembled in Los Angles. If Vaer decided to do a diver down the line I would strongly look into purchasing one. I’m not a big field watch fan.
    On a completely different note, I’m surprised Vaer is going to be able to source ETA movements. Many companies that used to use ETA have had to switch, with Selitta being the most popular option.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому +1

      They had some issue with the eta movement. I'd have to look at the email they sent out to everyone. It was specifically for the small second one. They orignaly planed on multiple dial options. Yet from when they announced it until about a month ago the price increased on the movement by 40%. So they had to pre-order them in advance so that it wouldn't keep going higher. Or something like that.
      At this point I'm perfectly fine with a Selitta or a Mioyta 9015. Especially if it comes with a better price.

    Thanks for the review. I also have a thing for syringe hands. That seconds hand is a brilliant execution. Are these syringe hands exclusive to the white face design, or is this a mix and match opportunity? I generally prefer black faces, but absolutely prefer syringe hands to sword hands.
    Re: the VAER logo. I have said it before, and will say it again... This logo is a missed opportunity. Better to go with a clean dial and put all of the information on the case back; or to execute a bold logo re-design. I suggest a stylized capital V enclosed within a circle, vaguely reminiscent of London underground logos, or something from Orwell's 1984. Less is more.
    I have been anxiously awaiting this kickstarter. I'm in. Thanks for letting me know, VAER's email distribution list appears to be non-functional.
    The thousand dollar question is: How loud and distracting is the rotor noise from this VAER automtic with Miyota movement? Please share your thoughts and impressions on this point. This is an issue commonly expressed in regard to the lesser Miyota movements. Does it apply to this higher end Miyota movement?
    Also, on the depth of the case. Did you measure this? VAER's website indicates that the height of the case is 10mm plus the height of the crystal (of course this has been a moving target for many months).

      @RelativeTime  5 років тому

      I measured the case myself. I always do, just to double check. I think the told me it was 9 and 10 with the crystal. So that lines up.
      As for rotor noise... well it's a bit subjective. I still have it so I just picked it up and closed my eyes. It's definitely louder then a Seiko NH35, but I think it's a little quieter then a Miyota 8215. It's a little hard to judge because it sounds different. It's a higher pitch then an 8215. Maybe because it's thinner? Not sure.
      A watches case also effects how much noise you hear as well. So I think a diver from Phoibos will be much quieter with their 9015 then this Vaer. As it's trying to be thin and minimal.
      Hope that helps.

      @@RelativeTime After a year with the VAER heritage mechanical; I will say that the Miyota 9015 movement is just barely audible when the rotor is in play. It is, IMO, barely noticeable. I do suspect that a bi-directional rotor would be more efficient at keeping the spring charged up. We will see in a few weeks when my first watch with an ETA 2824 movement comes in. It has the same beat rate as the Miyota 9015, but a bi-directional rotor, vs the mono-directional rotor of the Miyota... That being the VAER diver, an Arctic White.
      Please tell me that you will be reviewing the VAER diver. I look forward to your review!

    What do you think of this vs Hamilton or Seiko 5? No date would be a huge issue for me as I can never remember the date and need to know it all the time.

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому

      Sounds like they will offer a date version of each. The kick starter says it's "your choice".
      Hard to go wrong with a seiko 5, but I think here they are the lower quality watch compared to either hammy or Vaer.
      Compared to the Hamilton khaki field is a little tricky. I'd say the quality is about even, although the finishing on the Vaer case is really nice. I think it comes down more to a miyota vs an eta argument. The miyota 9015 has a louder rotar, but it's thinner. Which makes this thinner then the khaki field, almost as thin as the mechanical version. It's also hibeat where the new hammys are all standard, but they have 80hr power reserve. So just some pros and cons. Personally between a hammy khaki field and a Vaer, I'd take the Vaer.
      Yet if it was this Vaer vs the khaki king... I'd take the khaki king. Still love that design a lot. Even though it has half the water resistance and no screwdown crown. Plus I love the day and date at the top.

      I'm on there now and they have them, though they don't seem to pop up everywhere. They offer the no-numbers dial only on the USA quartz model, the C5. On the page go to Shop and select C5 Custom Built Quartz or just go to www.vaerwatches.com/collections/c5-custom-built-usa-quartz

    Looks like a great watch, and great value at the Kickstarter prices. But... it looks like the watch has a single dome crystal, and that is a deal breaker for me. The black dial has incredible legibility, so why on earth would you spoil that by making the watch more difficult to read. I really just don't get it!!

    • @RelativeTime
      @RelativeTime  5 років тому +1

      I'd have to check, but I think double domed is much more expensive. I didn't see much distortion on the crystal even with the single dome. Although I'm hoping the do the AR coating right on the final versions. This one is fine, but the black dial field models may be much more shiny.

      Sizing is always the tricky part. Eventually they might have a smaller version, but it would be a while. They are very cautious and slow about releasing new designs. They want to try and get it right the first time.
