I just received my A5 | Design Navy USA Automatic today and am very impressed. It came with two quick released straps: a very soft blue rubber strap and a distressed leather strap. Looks and feels great. Two thumbs way up.
Great Teller of time, you are right. I bought a 36 mm seiko SNZG09J1 , the minister of finance fell in love with it,I have started something now, its her 1st automatic watch and she loves it.
Thank you for reviewing this watch. I ended up purchasing this watch because of your review and it is close to LA. Also did you notice the screw down crown it will say Vaer horizontally no matter how much you play with it?
I like the watch, and like the date complication haha. But 180 for a quartz with no bells or whistles and a nice dial but nothing special is a bit steep imo.
Thanks for the comment, and understand your perspective. Our biggest feature investments are 10ATM rating (with screwdown crown), American Assembly, and the Gold Swiss MADE Ronda movements. Like many other US-based microbrands our Cost of Goods is so high (relative to larger sub-$200 brands) that we can't afford to sell our watches at wholesale. Again we're not the only brand doing this, but I think you'd find that many of the quality online microbrands (many mentioned in the comments here) are actually delivering more product value than many of the more well known "budget" watches.
I can definitely tell your serious watch enthusiast and you don’t hate on Quartz my watch affection since I’m basically a child of the tech generation like Pulsar, Seiko Texas Instruments includes wearables I just hit the subscribe button!
When I look at the field watches, date is one function it has to have along with the 24 hour dial. I want a screw down crown although many of the Hamiltons don’t have it.
I don't comment much if at all and I don't need the watch (would be nice) but thought id drop a comment and let you know I appreciate you and your content has only gotten better.
I agree about the date bar. I collect vintage Omega watches . I like the look of a clean watch without a date bar. I have @ Omega 1012 1973 automatic with a date bar. I had to repair the date bar. The other date bar is my $49.00 two tone blue 37 mm quartz Invicta. But most of the time te watch I wear has no date bar. If I want to know what day and date are I pull out My IPhone 13. My IPhone does all the tricks . It even Chimes on the hour. Did you ever see How much watch shops charges for watches that do other things but tell time. I look at my Watch to do I thing, and that is to time. Of course I like looking and admiring my 1949 Omega Trésor in 18k rose gold with a black face.
TT, great review, not a bad field watch, personally I am not against the date window but this one looks poorly positioned. I also have a 7.5" wrist so the Nato would drive me crazy. Have you checked out the Hemmel MBwatches, my personal favourite field style watches & I am thinking about picking up a Base Camp from UNDONE ATM as well.
I was deciding between this and the BOLDR Venture recently and opted for the latter because of its no-date layout and more modern case design and material. However, it does not have a screw-down crown nor is it assembled in Los Angeles so I can easily see myself replacing it with a VAER.
We get the comparison a lot and I think it's personal preference - Boldr looks more tactical/sporty and our watches our more minimal/vintage. Boldr is definitely one of the best Asian microbrands and they've really put together a great product. Biggest knock on them is that they should upgrade to a screwdown crown to make their line a bit more ocean-friendly, and upgrade to BG-W9 lume (there's a good UA-cam review by Relative Time showing a lume comparison between our watches). I'm the founder and designer of Vaer Watches so I think they're the best, but personally, I would probably pick a Bertucci or Baltic watch over Boldr... if I had to buy a B-name brand ;)

Great review! Now ( Like you said) I have to get one!! Here’s another you really need to check out. Momentum. Over the last two years they have been my go to field watch. The model is the Smokejumper. Two sizes, tough as hell, and the most bang for the buck! Thanks for all you do!

Thanks for your comment James - while we'd love to offer a sweeping quartz one day, unfortunately, there isn't an accessible supply chain at the moment. Our Swiss Made Ronda quartz' are only a few dollars less than the Seiko NH35 so the easiest upgrade to achieve the sweeping feature would be to move into an auto (which we are currently working on leveraging Miyota and ETA movements). Cheers!
Great review. The date complication seems like an afterthought to me. It’s very small and I hate how it interrupts the ‘3’, seriously they could have moved it 1mm... liked and subscribed!
I'm an advocate for a date window on a field watch, you have to imagine being away in "the field" for extended periods of time and losing all track of what day it is, I think it's helpful!

Thanks Joey, glad to hear you're enjoying the watch. Back in spring 2018, when we first released our Field Watch we used the Ronda 763 with no date, but we received so many requests for it that we decided to upgrade to the Ronda 715. Personal preference I guess, can't keep everyone happy!
@@VaerWatches I think if the date were white with a black background it may make others not so "iffy" on it. I like it the way it is though. Just put it on a leather (non Vaer) and I love that look as well! Anyone looking to buy should look at getting the leather NATO version. I didn't and regret it.
I want a date window on all my watches. Agree on strap length. Straps should be longer. They can always be trimmed rather than replaced. Manufacturer just trying to save a fraction of a cent. Least it wasn't a bracelet. They flop around to much. Don't belong on a field watch.

No longer made in Venice. No store there today. If it were still here, I would pop over this am and buy one. Top quality. I have a Berrtuci field watch that I treasure and will be buying a Vaer later this year, if not sooner.
Is it too pedantic on my part to expect the swiss to build more than just your copy of the Heritage quartz where the second hand hits the freaking mark on every second on the dial or are the swiss that far behind the Japanese who seem to be able to have second hands hit the mark on ALL their hundreds of millions of copies-- and thus need no excuses? My review after a year of owning: nice usa ASSEMBLED field watch if you don't give a s*** what the second hand is doing. Oh, and the lums are marginal!
The importance of the date function? Doesn't everybody go online, first thing, every day, even if only for a couple of minutes - with the date right there on the screen? Or check their calendar? I *never* use my watch's date function. The too-long (or short?) strap is more of a nuisance, perpetually catching on shirt and jacket cuffs.
I have a 7.5" wrist and I have to put the buckle on the bottom and tuck the excess inward. Pretty annoying, time to buy longer straps haha. Old video but I just bought a Vaer and love it.
I have one ball automatic And the rest of my watched are quartz! I'm a set it and forget it kind of guy! also Jory just use the first keeper and then you can tuck the rest!

I think the date window is a little too close to the 3 o'clock Arabic numeral. I wish it was a little further left of the number. I also wish the minute hand stretched to the minute track.
The date complication is set too close to the 3, it needs to be offset a bit to the left. This watch looks like a pharmacy sold Timex so it doesn't appeal to me.
I think a date complication can be useful in a field watch. When I go camping, it's for weeks on end and I'm avoiding my cellphone like the plague, so it'd be nice to view the date so I know when to go home after weeks of not caring about what day it is.

I have the Vaer S3 36mm version, and the date complication is black on black. I never noticed it until now. .

In the kickstarter for the auto you could get it without the date. They chose to carry the date version ongoing though.

I like date windows on just about all my watches. This would be good of it had a date wheel that was black so it matches the dial.
Weiss Watch Co. in Los Angeles and the American Field issue. Not just assembled but made in USA. Pricey but I love my blue dial Weiss.
