Hi folks,
I'm afraid they'll be no cinematic this month as I'm working on a very ambitous KSP project which will use two of my monthly production slots. To save you all walking away empty handed I'll leave you with the new Mk2 Nomad. Personally I don't feel there's much point bringing out a new version of a design unless it offers substantial improvements over the older model. I happy to report that this is indeed the case.
The biggest improvement by far is in the thermal management of the design. The large aeroplane wings have a very low melting point and can easily be destroyed at high speeds unless the air pressure is extremely thin. By mounting the wings to a precooler much of this excess heat is drawn off allowing the craft to attain higher speeds (Mach 4.3) with a decent safely margin. A knock on effect of this is that the craft can cruise at extremely low pitch angles (1.0°-0.5°) all of which reduces drag and aids efficiency. There have also been some stylistic improvements and a few other ease of life tweaks.
Despite being able to cruise at over Mach 4 for hours on end the Nomad Mk2 has one of the lowest stalling speeds in the fleet (15m/s with low fuel) and is a very forgiving aircraft to fly with or without SAS.
To get the best out of the craft I recommend using an autopilot mod such as pilot assist to help set the ideal cruise profile:
Start engine and pitch up to 20° on takeoff.
Disable rudders (optional).
At 10,000m set pitch to 10°.
At 15,000m set pitch to 5°.
At 20,000m set pitch to 1°.
The craft will gain speed but lose altitude and will begin climbing again at roughly 19,300m.
As more fuel is burnt the craft will fly above 20,000m and slowly loose speed.
Once the speed drops to Mach 4.0 graducally reduce the pitch angle in 0.25° increments.
Minimum recommended cruising pitch 0.5°.
Enable Yaw control before landing and use speed brakes (abort) to scrub off excess velocity.
Notes:
A joystick or analogue control option is highly recommended.
Recommended Mod: Pilot Assist

Nothing that can fly at mach 4 should be able to glide at 25 m/s. That's absolutely preposterous, well done.
SR-71-like performance, sailplane-like energy management, and cute-n-clever parts use. "Tell me you're watching a Cupcake Landers video without telling me you're watching a Cupcake Landers video."
I don’t think I’ve ever seen those wing parts used like that! Your creativity continues to astound me!! Best of luck on the big new project!
Thanks very much!
I love the way you mounted the wings, it’s definitely something I’m gonna do with one of my future sstos
You might want to use different wings, these large ones have a habbit of melting when pushed to SSTO speeds.
I love how you not only nearly hit the ground, but had so much lift at the end , that you literally were almost hovering before touchdown. Classic cupcake for ya!
I know right! What a magnificent design. I wonder what the wing loading might be? It's obviously extremely low. (Wing Surface Area/Weight) Seriously, that's an example of a job well done.
Yoooo I’m subbed to you aswell.
what a feather-light landing! :D
I'm totally curious to try this out in FAR.
Lol UA-cam time traveller
what's FAR?
@@Erik-bt6jk an Areodynamics mod for KSP
@@ValentineC137 thx
It's not gonna work as well, but why not!
John Cage's 4'33 was a good choice
I have always loved the song and the vibrant melody just made this video so much more enjoyable!
It never occurred to me that wings with an actual airfoil don’t have an actual airfoil on KSP, so you can mount them however! Brilliant!

Super clean design and looks like it flies beautifully as well!
Wow that's a simple but impressive design, it can go high and fast, very slow and smooth, maneuverable... and it looks good! On point dude! 10/10
Cheers!
The overall shape of this one is super cool
Dat landing. So soft
Ooh. That almost-rotational symmetry. Very nice. Clever wing mountings too.
The vertical stabilizers are the only things giving the craft a terrestrial feel. Maybe hidden rudders or duckerons would look cleaner? Then again, I do like the way the verts are symmetric on the bottom.
Amazing capabilities
I simply can't believe that UA-cam's Algorithm doesn't recommend this channel's vids! AMAZING content but you, dear cupcake, are WAY too underrated
Yeah, I get that a lot.
@@CupcakesLanders that’s because it’s true
those yaw airbrakes are dope
I've got an almost exact craft loaded to steam I call the Kerberang. flies well

Great minds think alike.
@@CupcakesLanders I'm pretty sure when I was making it I had been inspired from another craft of yours that had used the front wings in a similar way
Either way I like what you’ve done with it. ✅
@@CupcakesLanders thank you, I'm more bill than jeb tho. can't fly the darn things
Okay but the old nomad could literally fly supersonic without any major stability issues WHILE having 3/4 wings destroyed due to heat. It was ridiculous, but also pretty damn awesome.
I’m afraid flying with one or more wings missing will void the warranty.
those wings kinda hot tho
This design is awesome!
Nice stall speed too! Hot!
i saw something like this before on a picture but with inverted and doubled wings
those wings are amazing fun. you can flip those rear wings into forward swept wings and it handles even better.
the float
this would be a nice uav bomber just need to add a bit more radiators so one aim 9 doesnt kill it
damn that nice
Nice!
Hi !
I tried to reproduce this plane without reverse engineering it and it flies....but I have reversed controls 😅
I don't understand why !
Do you use reaction wheels or hidden control surfaces ?
No reaction wheels, but the roll and pitch surfaces are hidden inside the craft.
@@CupcakesLanders hmmn I used reaction wheels and made the plane tilted for a "natural" take off 😁
I gonna try with surfaces ;)
I like to try to build the ships/planes I see in videos by myself but I was stuck for this one 😅
Thank you for answering me and thank you for your videos !
I discovered you recently and I like your creativity😀
Seeing your ships makes me unlocking new ways to build mines 😀
Happy to help.
Cool! But how did you scale your kramax autopilot window down?
I'm not using the same mod that you describe.
@@CupcakesLanders Huh, I might have gotten the name wrong... This mod has the same icon and interface as the one that I have been using for ages
@@stratos2 Ah, I see. Well I do have a link in the description if you did want to try Pilot Assist.
Man, whats the name of the control mod?? the one that control your pitch, i have long waited for it!! Love to travel around with my ssto, but its hard to mantain altitude with manual controls
Check the description for a link.
@@CupcakesLanders thank youuu
how can it not break apart certain amount G load??
Wait...it's all wings.
Idk if you are reading this but is it ok if I steal the design and add my own scramjet engine to it? I’m not uploading it to UA-cam or anything?
Of course you can, you're more then welcome to upload to UA-cam or wherever else you like too.
@@CupcakesLanders yo thanks
So I can’t seem to get the design to work on my end and idk why. I just slides all over the runway
Make sure advanced tweakables are enabled and try adjusting the wheel friction/landing gear springs/dampeners.
@@CupcakesLanders ok
What mod he use to zoom out to infinity?
You can do that in the stock game.
So much lift;
