Nissan E-NV200 electric van review incl running costs v diesel

  • So much pollution is caused by diesel vans so at last it’s great to see more electric vans coming to the market by various manufacturers. However the Nissan ENV200 has been with us for a while so what do I think of it? I’ve had a few over the years which I’ve bought and sold but this is one of the newer post 2018 models with larger battery.
I take a look around the van, the space, the spec, why it’s like to drive, real range and running costs.
I think they’re great, and hope to see more electric vans on the road over the coming years …
    Thanks for watching!

James Cotes of Cleevley EVs used an E-NV200 for doing mobile maintenance and repairs on EVs. He would travel hundreds of miles in a week (sometimes over 1,000 miles). The 150 mile range was more distance than he ever needed to do in one stretch. Because a lot of the EV owners he helped had home charging he was also able to keep his van charged at most destinations without having to seek public units. Of course, if he used public units they would have been Rapid chargers and even more convenient. The point is: are we really still flogging this dead range horse? A 40kw E-NV200 is more than adequate for the kind of work a van of than size would do. I used to drive a similar sized petrol van for work and I would travel less than 20 miles in a 10 hour day. It was lots of small distances not 90 mile treks. That's typical of a large number of jobs carried out by vans of all sizes.

We need to see a lot more electric commercial vehicles… finally fleet managers are seeing the light and they are changing not due to environmental reasons (most of them), but due to financial reasons, total cost of ownership of EVs…
Local “posties” have some EV vans (old Merc eVito and Vauxhalls) and they love them… 😊

Bit late to this video, but a couple of points.
1, the electric seats and steering wheel aren't there because it is an especially well equipped van, they are there because it uses less battery power to keep the occupants warm that way than using the heater. And if you are using less battery power to heat the occupants, you will go further on a charge, simples!.
2, The running costs comparison isn't very realistic because an equivalent ICE van of that size is going to be averaging at least 40mpg, not 30.

Thing is whilst I understand that for local trips this van would be and are great, Amazon uses alot of electric vans for example but really the range of such vehicles is still not great.

Another great review Rich, but being a van owner as well, I wonder how the range is affected when the van is fully loaded up etc - after all it is a workhorse & will be carting heavy stuff at back. Maybe you can stick in max load capacity & see how that affects range - that's where ice vans are still popular compared to cost of electric vans.

People ask about running costs of an EV Van so here are some real figures.
I have had an e-expert since January.
It has done 36,500 miles since January. (Average 3000 per month, lots of motorway driving about 60-65mph)
Efficiency 2.4 - 3.0 depending on temperature, wind, rain.
Usually run in Normal mode (not ECO)
Real world costs of home charging and rapid charging is £6100 for the year which equates to 16.9 pence per mile average for the year. (The rapid charging costs have doubled since the start of the year too!)
    £136 on servicing (25,000 miles)
    Still on the original tyres!
    No other costs.
Diesel equivalent (based on quoted 32.6mpg for same van at £1.80 per litre) = 25 pence per mile. (If you can squeeze the claimed 40mpg out of an equivalent van it’s 20 pence per mile or £1131.50 per annum)
Running cost savings for this year on fuel alone - 8.1 pence per mile or £2956.50 per annum. (3.1 pence per mile at claimed mpg)
Service costs comparison I have no figures.

Interesting that all electric vans have about the same range. Like you pointed out electric vans are an alternative to diesel in a lot of cases especially now cities like Bristol and Bath are charging for vans / commercials that enter the city but not old high emission diesel cars which is bonkers. Hybrid vans would be a way forward with 50 mile electric range. One thing to note is the van load will also reduce range.

Why when people do comparison videos, they rarely add the monthly cost on PCP etc. You have to take into account the diesel would cost. Me £300 a month and the EV is £500 a month. That is part of the running cost so the EV needs to make up that difference before being cheaper surely?

    • @andygardner6016

Because you have forgotten about depreciation..... The EV will depreciate slower and in my case because I bought at the right time not depreciate at all.... I have run an eNV for over 6 years that I bought as an exdemo with 25 miles on the clock and its worth today what I paid for it

I drive quite a few EVs and I have to admit I have a bit of a soft spot for the E-NV200. It is easy to drive with good visibility and the spec of the Tekna is quite impressive. As Richard pointed out these are great for local tradesmen as the volume of space and access is better than on most vans in its class. Only downsides are the hard plastics in the cab (although this applies to many cheap vans) and the disappointing range. You would have thought that the front shape would have given it a more aerodynamic profile. Whilst I can understand that the cost of developing a bespoke replacement model would have been uneconomic I don’t think the new model based on the Renault Kangoo is nearly as an attractive proposition.

Interestingly, chatting to my postman before Christmas and remarking on his change of van he said that jumping in and out of his old Vauxhall Corsa van was giving him no end of back pain so he had finally been able to get his manager to give him a higher seating position Peugeot Expert - even though it was a bit big for his delivery requirements. Goes to suggest that a higher driving position is better for those jumping in and out.
