    I just found your channel. Great you are describing how you sail, cook and sleep. I sail my Rival 32 solo and I do the same sleeping for 10-15 mins each time. I also have a large vacuum flask I fill with hot water before I get going then I have hot water for drinks even if it is rough so I don't need to boil a kettle again. I subscribed and now will catch up on your videos. Cheers. Andy Sussex, UK

    I crossed from Italy to Gran Canaria with a Gambling 34, i noticed your mast because i had the same one, with the same sail hanks made in white plastic for the main, i broke dozen of them in rough sea and low wind later on crossin to St.Lucia....Have fun, good wind.

    I can see doing 15 minutes of sleep at a time for maybe 1 night....but I don't know how people can do that for weeks at a time sailing across the Pacific - but some people do.

      Usually I sleep for about 15-20 minutes a time while in busier areas. Out in the middle of the Atlantic or Pacific I often sleep for an hour or more at a time. My radar and AIS alarms will wake me up a long time before anything gets even remotely close to me. My main reason for waking up is to make sure I am still on course because I use a wind wane steering system that requires regular monitoring.

    A quick tip is to have a loop of bungee tied around the boom to hook over the reefing hook to hold the reef in place while you go back. Sometimes the wind can blow it off otherwise.

    so few days ago i came by with this sailing boat lifestyle and thought wow, this could be a good idea for off grid living,,,but man...after some research I figured it's nothing but challenge , keeping busy, new issues all the time....basically, you have to pay for fuel much more than your car, you have to have permission to more the boat and pay high fees, you have to buy water, you have to clean toilet, you have to eat food that's either canned or dry, you hardly get any comfortable sleep,,,so for someone looking for as hassle free lifestyle as possible, just live at your parents, hahahahha...

    I was a controller (?) for a transport company once and had nightshifts (in addition to the normal work at day)... this sleep pattern, sleep 30 mins, wake up and check everythin, sleep another 30 mins etc. is something one gets used to pretty fast. extremely unhealthy tho. it took me a while to recover from it after I quit. I guess its not that stressful when you're just sailing and enjoying life but still..

    • @noelnicholls1894
      @noelnicholls1894 3 роки тому +4

      Know this is a bit late to comment but I would think simplicity. Mechanical wind vanes have a bunch of parts. An electric tillerpilot takes up way less space and when not in use can be put away quickly. He has a solar panel that will easily handle it.

    It's good to go low key on the technical stuff, but maybe you should consider investing in AIS so that you can sleep longer and better. Bad sleep is a good way to make mistakes. But you make very nice films, real reality without all the drinking and pirate crap that many others do.

    • @TheSailingFrenchman

    This is my BIGGEST question about solo sailing ever... What if you had fallen off here... 3:34 Would you almost guaranteed be dead? Your boat would keep going, you cant catch up to it by swimming, and nobody would find you. Thats my biggest fear and concern. Its got to have happened many many times. That thought scares me more than anything.
    Update: I read a good thread on this actually. And the best thing you can do is use a harness and tether. And make sure you have a cell phone in a waterproof bag in your pocket.

    • @TheSailingFrenchman
      @TheSailingFrenchman  6 років тому +2

      Yeah, this was a big questioning I had at the moment of the refit, I had to chose between a wind vane or a stern platform... and I went for the platform. On such a small boat, it really adds a "room" in the boat. And the autopilot is doing really good, even on the atlantic crossing, so I'm quite happy to have made this choice

    • @mhensen1
      @mhensen1 6 років тому

      Well AIS is an assistance to the watch, it helps. But I would never rely 100% on AIS. Many boats don't have it (small sailing boats like me, fishermans, especially in less developed countries...etc), it's not absolutely accurate or reliable.

      Il existe des détecteurs de radars, qui détectent les radars allumés dans un certain rayon. Donc ça couvre grosso modo les porte-container (24/24 7/7), quelques voiliers (uniquement lorsque près des côtes, qui allume son radars en plein océan ?) et les chalutiers (lorsqu'ils sont de pays développés seulement).
      Comme tu peux le voir ce n'est pas fiable à 100% (pas même à 50% de mon point de vue).

    What if you lower sails and sleep fir hours?

    • @TheSailingFrenchman
      @TheSailingFrenchman  6 років тому +2

      Well even if the boat isn't moving, other boats are, so you still need to keep the watch in case they don't see you. Plus if you lower the sails, the boats will be affected much more by the swell, and it would be bouncing from one lean to the other, impossible to sleep...

    You have an autopilot right?

    • @TheSailingFrenchman
      @TheSailingFrenchman  5 років тому

      yep, an electric tiller autopilot. To go singlehanded on long distances a windvane or an autopilot is mandatory

    Dude, seriously how can you do this in such a tiny boat, surely the ocean can f*ck you at any moment it choses. How would you manage a random hurricane or 30ft waves?!

    Eh beh… pieds nus… le jour où tu vas te péter un doigt de pied coincé dans un bout' ! idem pour la cuisine pied nu, c'est très désagréable la bouffe (ou un liquide) bouillante qui t'atterrit sur le pied ! et je ne te cause même pas de passer du cockpit à la cuisine via la descente avec une lame nue (un couteau) à la main ; tout ça, c'est franchement pas sécuritaire, surtout en solo ; à part ça, elles sont très bien tes vidéos, qui me rappellent mes croisières en solo sur un écume de mer il y a déja longtemps, dans des contrées plus froides ;-)

      Quand on vit 24h/24 et 7j/7 sur son bateau ce n'est pas pareil que quand on part en weekend pour décompresser du boulot ...
      Le confort viendra toujours surpasser le "sécuritaire".
      Tu peux tout autant te faire mal chez toi ...
      Il suffi de faire attention, d'analyser l'environnement qui t'entoure avant de faire quelque chose.

      Oui c'est vrai que ce n'est pas le top niveau secu, ma comme le resume très bien @ARTEMISFLO , c'est ma maison, et il y a pas mal de choses ou je transgresse un peu sur la sécurité, sinon c'est invivable (et dans pas mal de cas, le bateau est tellement gite que l'eau ne tombera pas sur mes pieds, mais directement dans les équipés de l'autre cote du bateau :D )
