I have a theory as to why Backlund won the title in 94. A few weeks earlier in Novemberof 1994, 45 year-old George Foreman regained the Heavyweight Boxing Championship of the World. Perhaps seeing the national attention that got sparked the idea to give the WWF title to 40 plus year old Bob Backlund. And Vince loved bringing boxers into the WWF for storylines, so maybe they thought they could work a deal with Foreman, that fell through quickly, so drop the title to Nash.

The reasoning behind the Montreal screwjob was simple Bret Hart wanted to get over and then go to WCW with the WWF world heavyweight title.... Anyone who thinks he was right in that situation is wrong

Nope. Shawn was being disrespectful to him, so he refused to drop to Shawn. He was fine dropping it to anyone else. Just not Shawn.
