are you using a formula field inside the vertex map? if so, what is the code?
0.5 + sin( ( subfields + d ) * f * 360 ) * 0.8
I had the same issue. It's frustrating because the tutorial doesn't show the most important part but I was able to get a similar result by creating a spherical field and breaking its gradient by applying not a formula field but a formula curve.
