    Even tho oculus says you should still unplug it at full charge
    And in case of the quest 1, aloot of people left it charged all the time, even if it isnt close to 0

    The slower charging above 80% isn't just deliberately slowed down, it's actually a law of batteries, which the easiest way to explain is to compare it to inflating a balloon. The more full the balloon gets harder it is to inflate it more.
    The current attempting to charge the battery is only as effective as its relative power compared to the battery.

    Hi, I work in the tech repair and studying electronics in college and I deal with replacing lithium batteries in devices a lot. The battery used is lithium ion, these batteries like to be charged, best state to store for long term is 50%, but the battery likes to stay between 20% and 80% letting it die completely can be just as bad for the battery as a full charge. And temperature has an effect as well, if you live in freezing temperatures then the battery is only affected by 3% over a long period of time, above that it can move up to 18% charge lost. (This is based off scholarly articles, feel free to look up studies on lithium ion batteries if you want to verify) many lithium ion batteries in mobile devices like phones can handle 500 charge cycles (meaning the full capacity of the battery being charged as a summation of all charges, charging from 95 to 100 twenty times makes one full charge cycle) and most modern devices do not overcharge the battery due to safe guards, but the way they do this is slightly discharge the battery and then recharge it over and over once it reaches 100% on the charger, this takes away small amounts of rated charge cycles. The battery is safe, but this can cause deminished life to the battery over time faster than if unplugged. Hope this helps. If enough people ask I'll provide sources for the studies done on lithium ion batteries and charger cycles.

      The sweet spot is actually storage at 40% charge, and the temperature is not that important at this charge state, but if you store it at 100% charge at 25 celcius, it can loose 20% capacity in a year. But as said in the video, 100% charge in the quest UI does probably not mean that the battery is 100% charged (4,2V), so our batteries will most likely not loose 20% capacity per year at room temperature.
      And saying that a typical phone battery can handle 500 charge cycles is a bit too simplified. This relies heavily on how deep the charge cycles are. eg. If you cycle the battery between 85% and 25% it should endure twice as many charge cycles, than if you cycle it between 100% and 25%. - And if you keep it between 75% and 45%, it could live for 5x as many cycles(!).

    It really depends on what "kind" of battery they use in Quest 2. Some batteries need to be almost fully discharged by using them long enough before you recharge them in order to have long lifespans. Some batteries don't like to be overcharged, but some wouldn't mind. Oculus should really make some suggestion on their webpage about how to keep the battery life of Quest 2 better.

    The Oculus Quest v1 was released mid 2019 and now with the Oculus Quest 2 we are starting to see Quest games that will only run on the V2. This suggest a ~2.5 to 3 year cycle. Therefore there is little need to worry about the battery as the headset will likely be obsolete before the user sees any noteworthy battery degradation.

    Actually charging will slow down even on older devices. This is simply to avoid potentially overcharging a lithium battery, which would be very dangerous. However what a lot of devices do now is they actually use machine learning to predict the behavior of the user and automatically pausing charging at about 80% if it expects to be left on the charger for a prolonged period of time. (eg like when you’re sleeping)

    The issue with leaving it plugged in isn’t the worry of over charging, as there’s quite a few safeguards in place to prevent overcharging, but rather the issue of trickle charging. Which is the act of charging to 100%, then having it drop a % causing charging to kick back in, causing to cycle the battery causing wear.

    • @johndor7793
      @johndor7793 3 роки тому

      I dont think people know what cycling is. I know I dont and its used all the time. It has little meaning because no one explains it.

    • @Rennaii
      @Rennaii 3 роки тому

      @@johndor7793 Basically, batteries have a certain amount of cycles [full to empty] that they typically can withstand prior to no longer holding enough charge to power the device you're attempting to power. Each time you fully charge a battery, you degrade the total capacity the battery can hold by just a little bit. Fully charging a battery from 99% doesn't degrade the battery anywhere near as much as a full cycle from 0% to 100%, but it does still degrade the battery a little bit. Thus the more you trickle charge, the more the battery is harmed. It is worth noting that companies such as apple have implemented anti-trickle charging features that will only finish charging the device right before it expects you to unplug the device based on previous history. Hopefully that helps a little bit.

    I use my Quest 2 to play active game like Beat Saber, so after I am done, I plug it in to charge, go take a shower and when I come out the Yellow light has turned Green, so I unplug the charging cable. This is a good pattern of use that ensures you are not leaving battery in depleted state, nor charging it when it is already at max unnecessarily.
    I do similar with my smart phone, where I only charge it in the morning at my computer desk while working for couple of hours. Then it lasts rest of day and through the night until next day no problem. I easily go over 3 years without any battery issues making me swap phones doing things this way. The only reason I upgrade phone is when I want the significantly better camera or some other improvement that makes the upgrade worthwhile.

    The only thing I'll add is I'm curious how Quests will be in another year's time as We still haven't reached the 2 year mark for the Quest 1 yet (May 2019 was earliest models IIRC) so prolonged sustained trickle charging of the Quests battery hasn't had time to be tested fully yet (if you take most mobile phones their batteries tend to spec'd to work for at least the 2yrs contract cycles they are usually on, or a specific amount of cycles of you want to be particular, so being charged this way i.e. Leaving on charge will no doubt be the same as if we left a mobile phone like this due to the battery components being very very similar if not identical.
    Manufacturers state to remove your device from charging once full as there will always be a benefit to removing your device from charging and not leaving in a trickle state.
    I have personally seen a marked difference in battery longevity when only charging my battery to the 80% and charging again at the 15% mark (with a one a month full reconditioning drain and recharge cycle of 0%-100%) this is due to dendrites that can form in lithium-ion batteries over multiple frequent charging cycles under certain conditions.
    As you say I don't think there is any Safety issues but there will definitely be longevity issues around how long said Quests battery will last per play cycle. One old pixel 2's battery barely lasts a day now (always left on over night while sleeping and left on charge all the time) whereas the other one we have was only ever charged to the above specs (80% max and 15% min except for the once per month cycle) and this phone still has over 93% of it's original capacity IIRC the last I checked.
    This is not definitive but is what I have experienced with Lithium-Ion batteries that are from mobile devices (I use some apps and smart plugs with my Android devices to ensure the above charging is adhered to).

    There is a common misconception that power is pushed to a device, instead for a modern device it should be the device pulling power from the power brick or whatever, this means as long as the device knows when to charge or not, it is completely safe to keep it plugged in overnight, or ever for weeks.

    Any modern device with a lithium polymer battery which is basically all of them has charging circuitry in the charger that stops IT from charging when the battery is full. this has to happen because overcharging a lithium battery can cause catastrophic failure. this means that you can leave a modern device on the charger indefinitely with no ill effect.

    This is the same age old question for all rechargeable devices. The short answer is no, it will not deal any immediate damage to your device. You could leave it on for over a year and you would hardly notice any difference. Ideally you can maintain a charge level between ~25% and ~85%. That range of charge is pretty efficient for long charge life cycles.
    But realistically speaking, it is negligible degradation over a year of regular use. Also no lithium based batteries last forever. They will crap out after a few hundred charge cycles.

    I’d say practice good habits when you can. Don’t worry about it, but if you see a green light on your quest, just go ahead and unplug it. Leave it on overnight if you want, but unplug it if it’s already at a good charge before you go to bed. If that means it’s at 80% or so in he morning, just plug it in when you wake up and eat breakfast.

    As someone that didn’t buy the VR power battery bank right away I would absolutely recommend anyone that’s looking in to getting the quest 2 to get it right at the beginning. You’ll be very annoyed when your headset dies mid play session of half life alix or bone works.

  • @freedomunrestricted

    Modern lithium batteries are pretty much all the same with little exception. Been recycling and repurposing lithium batteries for a couple years.
    Ideal usage you want to keep battery charge between 20 and 80%. At the minimum for longevity you want to avoid draining the battery all the way down on a regular basis. Lithium batteries do not get a memory like the old ni-cd.

      my new s22 ultra and I suppose lots of new phones have extend battery feature you can enable which limits charging to 80%, and it also says like you mentioned don't go below 20 percent. i actually use the feature at night in case i forget to unplug it because even though these batteries don't go past the danger point, they trickle down then charge back up, over and over and I guess that uses up cycles over time shrinking battery life. personally, I think they all die significantly after 2 years.

    Well i only have the first quest but honestly i pretty much have it plugged in 24/7 lmao except on occasion when im playing a game that requires more movement or when im not near an outlet for whatever reasons i still get that 2 hour battery life it gets. Also i dont see the harm since the quest 2 has that elite battery strap you would charge the fully internal battery with. Batteries and chargers now days are built to not overcharge things so no harm is caused. The only annoying thing is i havent been getting a low battery warning since quite a good number up updates ago, having my quest randomly die on me sucks x)
