Luke Kelly - The Dubliner Prince, who became Ireland's king and the voice of a nation. He will live forever as he lives on through his music. He has inspired many generations and he will inspire for many more generations to come. His likes will never be seen again. Thanks KellyONeill for all your youtube posts and sharing his music with us.
Kelly's craggy face, framed by a shock of red curls and a goatee beard, was a much-loved feature of the Irish and international music scene. -Irish Echo, 1984 (found on "It's the Dubliners" site)
Now it’s 2024. He’s been gone for 39 years. I just met him and his music 3 or 4 years. I fell in love immediately. Can’t imagine how I missed his music 🎶 all the years he was active. 💚💚☘️☘️🇮🇪🇮🇪
kellyoneill - be blessed for this treasury you've been taking care for us all here:) never heard this one - it was uploaded on one of my birthdays:)) thank you!
LOVELY song...and lovely picture. When was it taken? He may have had a "craggy" face, but to me at least, Luke was a thousand times sexier than any "squeaky-clean" boygroup guy. And yes, I'd gladly take the risk of time-travel...!;)
God, kellyoneill, please tell us how we can get ahold of copies of these songs. This version of Galway Races and the version of McAlpine’s Fusiliers you posted are both GOLD. Please, please tell us how we can get copies of them! Lol I’m begging over here.

R.I.P Luke Kelly, you had one of the most beautyfull voices I've ever heard.
gives me goosebumps, absolute spiritual legend and capturing a rare moment and rare old times.
He had an amazing talent of singing long sentences without taking a breath..or it seems like he didn't breath. It's not easy to do as smoothly as he.
Rocky Road to Dublin another great example.
Luke,Ronnie and the rest of the original dubliners are simply the spirit of Ireland.
Strong and sovereining voice, Luke Kelly!!!
It's warm and wonderful. I'm addicted to it!
(re: Lukey's voice)
Suprime voice, Luke. Thank you for send me Oneill.
kellyoneill - be blessed for this treasury you've been taking care for us all here:)

The Galway Races are still mad fun in 2018.

Wow, a great version, never heard before
he's delighting God right now, singing Him his tunes...
I like how we Presbyterians get to be our own religion
😂

Kelly Rocks for these posts.
The greatest.🍀🍀👍👏
If I didn't know better,I'd say the chorus might be some, or indeed all of the Johnstones?... Christy
The best.
Awesome!!!
What a voice. The tone and diction are almost otherwordly. I've heard this version before. Is this from Luke's years in England?
Jayson Pfaff I doubt it, if it's called Galway Races.
+Jayson Pfaff No, this is a Dubliners song.
Its a far older tune than the Dubliners
It is from his years in England, in early sixties, before the Dubliners
@enyrb this... haha. he could breath so damn well.
A tour de force from an old friend sadly missed.
Does anyone know who the woman singing is?

If you thought his cover of "Galway Races" was cool, you should listen to his Rocky Road to Dublin cover:

Inna Litvak OMG thank you!
0 dislike's on this video speaks for itself
Your welcome :)
This isn't with the Dubliners? Who's supporting him?
together Comrad! Bua!
A true Dub
Luke is savage.
His older face is one he well earned.
He had the sups and the craic.....
Why feckin not?
Was this version of the song in any tape or LP?
Can't find the right lyrics
A bit of a contradiction about there being no animosity: What about pelting bottles at poor Maggie?
It wasn't based on religion
@@chasethedane9784 yes it was, Maggie was a Methodist. Nobody likes a Methodist.
Each verse sung with one breath?!
I think he was very sick and may be his hair could have falled.
The hat he's wearing looks like the hat Barney usually wears, no?
I could almost swear there's a female backing singer in there
@udabonz Haha yeah you're right!!
who said anythin about a "craggy face"?
That's hypnotising.
And as I rode out through Galway Town
To seek for recreation
On the seventeenth of August
Me mind being elevated
There were multitudes assembled
With their tickets at the station
And me eyes began to dazzle
And they're going to see the races
Bakar Breaks Down The Meaning of “Hell N Back”
To me whack fol the do fol the diddlely idle day
There were passengers from Limerick
And passengers from Nenagh
Passengers from Dublin
And sportsmen from Tipperary
There were passengers from Kerry
And all quarters of the nation
And our member Mr Hardy
For to join the Galway Blazers
To me whack fol the do fol the diddlely idle day
There were multitudes from Aran
And members from New Quay shore
The boys of Connemara
And the Clare unmarried maidens
People from Cork City
Who were loyal, true and faithful
They brought home the Fenian prisoners
From dying in foreign nations
To me whack fol the do fol the diddlely idle day
And it's there you'll see confectioners
With sugarsticks and dainties
The lozenges and oranges
The lemonade and raisins
Gingerbread and spices
To accomodate the ladies
And a big crubeen for threepence
To be suckin' while they're able
To me whack fol the do fol the diddlely idle day
And it's there you'll see the gamblers
The thimbles and the garters
And the sporting Wheel of Fortune
With the four and twenty quarters
There was others without scruple
Pelting wattles at poor Maggy
And her daddy well contented
To be gawking at his daughter
To me whack fol the do fol the diddlely idle day
And it's there you'll see the pipers
And the fiddlers competing
The nimble-footed dancers
And they trippin' on the daisies
There was others shoutin' cigars and lights
And bills for all the races
With the colours of the jockey
And the price and horses' ages
To me whack fol the do fol the diddlely idle day
And it's there you'll see the jockeys
And they mounted on so stately
The pink, the blue, the orange and green
The emblem of our nation
When the bell was rung for starting
All the horses seemed impatient
I thought they never stood on ground
Their speed was so amazing
To me whack fol the do fol the diddlely idle day
There was half a million people there
Of all denominations
The Catholic, the Protestant
The Jew and Presbyterian
There was yet no animosity
No matter what persuasion
But fáilte and hospitality
Inducing Mr Paisley
To me whack fol the do fol the diddlely idle day and
To me whack fol the do fol the diddlely idle day
I guess he just took the place of God!
@lisa51663 Um..... yeah it is
Chords please
