With a schemer like Ben, you need a genuine bona fide QB to run things. Lovce this vid Billy, you got a new subscriber!
Very well done. Johnsons ability to create mismatches inside and use that to create long punishing drives that tire defenses out, is a very impressive skill.
And they went and drafted 2 guys in LaPorta and Gibbs who are great at lining up as receivers and did it frequently in college. Instead of the single mismatch with Amon-ra they were looking for last year all the time, you’re gonna have 2-3 of those mismatches available in those 2 WR sets. LaPorta is quick and fluid enough with his size to handle a DB on him and likes lining up all the way out wide, and Gibbs or st.brown on a LB is just automatic. When Jamo is back and defenses have to cover everything over the top, we should really see everything click underneath. Offensively they could really be something special this year.
Thank you for this. I'm a Detroit sports fan, and even I don't think we're talking about Dan Campbell without Ben Johnson. The rest of the NFL knows this, considering how many offers he got from other teams in the offseason.
One thing to also note: one of the biggest problems with the run game last year was broken/missed tackles. With Swift hampered with a shoulder injury, and Williams (who wasn't shy about contact) being dragged to the ground constantly, both RBs had 17 broken tackles on the year. David Montgomery had 20 on his own. Gibbs had 104 over three years in the ACC/SEC. Detroit prioritized players that can evade and break tackles to help extend runs. It's not outside of possibility that this run game is going to be exceptionally better with players that (hopefully) aren't injured as much and can help extend runs to make 2nd/3rd downs smaller.
@@evanmarquardt7249 Yeah, far from it. The Goff trade really turbo charged that team and their GM, who served as assistant GM with the Rams during their rebuild, learned everything about drafting and assembling players for a title run. A big change as well with Goff running this system with the Lions is that despite having his fair share of timely play action passes which he was used to doing with the Rams, the empty backfield sets helps keep his eyes on the coverage pre and post snap. The obvious mismatches created also key in on who Goff's big reads would be. This would also become more pivotal when both his RBs are solid pass catchers as well.
