Also, if you start tretinoin with pretty good skin a.k.a, occasional pimples, some discoloration, or some blackheads. You might not see results compared to someone who has acne because the retinol is not correcting a lot! But it doesn't mean it's not working. Keep using it and you will thank yourself when you're older.

I’m using tretinoin for the anti-aging benefits and am not expecting to see any differences for roughly one year. I don’t have much to correct, but I started early to prevent wrinkles for forming. I have a super basic skincare routine which is what you need when using tretinoin

I have been doing everything word for word..I wonder if it isn't working with my skin. I guess it can't be expected for everyone to have a one size fits all approach.

From what I've heard the gel is way more potent. You will get a lot more peeling and irritation but it's going to do a lot more. I'm on .05% and I'm only using it every few days, not everyday, not even every other day. Once my skin gets used to it, I will use it more days of the week. The irritation is not forever, especially if you ease it in. I'm getting amazing results with the gel, and I really doubt the cream would do the same. Best of luck all.

That’s just where my skin is happiest. I’ve also been using azelaic acid to help my rosacea on those off nights, and I will say-for what it’s worth-it has helped me tolerate retinoids a lot better for some reason. Great tips. Its very important that you listen to your doctor, don't listen to other people who say you aren't using it enough or you aren't using a high enough strength. Everyone's skin is different! What works for one person won't work for another.
As far as the gel vs cream issue, my doctor did say the gel was a bit harsher and told me that she recommend the gel version for people with oily skin, and the cream for regular or dry skin.

ok i use bha , vitamin c also tretinoin 0.25% on my skin care routine ( not all of them together of course) my skin isn't irritated and my discoloration and dullness actually went away . The key is don't use all of them together , use good moisturizer also your spf 50 every freaking day .
I use tretinoin once a week as i started 1 month ago , bha every other day and vitamin c every other day .
I still didn't get tretinoin purge , i don't have acne, i occasionally get pimple here n there because of my shitty food habit and sleeping routine. My skin type is oily so i don't think I'll ever get rid of pimple forever . Please remember tretinoin and exfoliation isn't the same thing, tretinoin does help speed up your skin cell turnover but it doesn't exfoliate.

I've been on tretinoin since 2012. I was 28. Now I'm 38. I got it for anti aging. I was actually on it as a teen for a few months to deal with acne, but stopped using it because I had no clue it was also anti aging. Anyways, I have no wrinkles or lines. I know 38 is early still, but some women have lines in their 20's, so not uncommon. I stopped using it while pregnant 3 times. The studies are more for Accutane the oral version would be a super strict no no while pregnant! But just to be safe, I cease using it. While breastfeeding I do. The amount of it you would pass through to yout baby is so little... if at all. Not like in the womb, and again, not Accutane anyways. So yeah, I have used it for 10 years with few years as a break while pregnant. I don't go over .025 because it's too strong. The trouble is that you have to wear sunscreen and cover your skin, because ironically, it can cause MORE photoaging. So .025 is the sweet spot. I apply sunscreen, wear a hat, and thats it. I don't feel the need to wear those alien masks while on a walk with my kids like some of these girls do. lol

hey rudi as for forehead breakouts, what worked for my combo acne prone skin was using
    Am:
    cleansing with water,
benzoyl peroxide ( started with 2,5% and upped it to 5%) cream
    cerave daily moisturizing lotion
svr blur spf 50 ( svr has niacinamide which helps with acne
    pm:
    eucerin oil cleanser
    cerave foaming cleanser
    tretinoin 0.05%
    cerave daily moisturizing lotion
once a week: The ordinary AHA BHA peeling solution
the ordinary toning solution 3 times a week.
by the way cerave moisturizers tend to sting your skin, when the skin barrier is damaged so this signals to me whether to cut back on exfoliants.
for residual acne marks I'd suggest Effasun from codexial 8% then upped it to 15%.
I didn't use a vitamin C serum because my sunscreen already has antioxidants like betacaroten

I've been on the cream for months now and its literally doing nothing and the only reason I am complaining even though I know everyone is like "oh you have to wait" is because this is NOT my first time on retinoids when I took retin A for like 2 years and it worked then they switched me to the cream and I was wondering why it was taking so long.... i'm gonna have to talk to my dermatologist. also idk if its just me but I research this stuff on the internet and with vids like yours and I get so much information about purging, etc. that my dermatologist did not really emphasize for me then I go and tell them how its not working and they make me feel crazy for it. maybe I just need a new dermatologist ?? loll thanks for your video

I have been using Tretinion almost for three months now.. . But like we all know everyone skin type is different.. . And it differs.. . For me personally I started with 0.25 cream base for one week everyday and then jumped to 0.05 cream base for another three weeks and I already started to see difference and luckily I didn't get any irritation what so ever and my skin type is oily too.. . Since there was no irritation I jump to the Highest strength 0.1 gel base and it's almost going to be two weeks of using it.. . And there is some tightness on the skin but it's a part of the process.. . We just have to be patient 💯🤚.. . And I use it every single night since my skin could tolerate it well.. . And the reason I'm using this is because I have PCOS which makes my skin very much acne prone plus hormonal acne is a pain in the ass.. . But since starting Tretinion has literally changed the skin game for me.. . And guys I'm telling you Tretinion will work just give it time.. . And do what your skin can tolerate.. . Good luck to everyone in their skin care journey❤️

@Owi Owi i'm sorry, but your comment is unnecessarily rude and misleading. Just because you're a certified dietitian and nutritionist, doesn't mean your points are always valid. Using your so-called certification to put down others isn't a good thing. Not every dietitian and nutritionist agrees with you. Many of them encourage us to eat meat, eggs, etc to get our daily protein intake, does that mean those so-called nutritionists know nothing about science? This is why many people hate vegans. They are entitled, annoying and easily-offended. You keep using science to back up your claims while also ignoring science that humans are naturally omnivores. Stop attacking people about what they eat and mind your own business. Also, calling people "uneducated" doesn't make you look better than them. Your lack of manner makes you look arrogant, entitled and annoying.

People, Tretinoin is easy to use as long as you know how to use it. Tretinoin can be use to combat acne or as an anti ageing treatment.
If you are using it to fight acne use it until your pimples clear and then stop using it, if you see no improvement after a few weeks you can also choose to opt out too and go consider other treatments for your acne instead.
If you want to use tretinoin as an anti ageing treatment the traditional way is to go in slowly and increase its usage until your skin become retinised and can tolerate it without irritations. The other way to use it without living in constant misery because you can't figure out pattern to let tretinoin become fully acclimatised to your skin is to use it once a week then in a lower strength dosage, most people will be able to handle it well this way as you can still promote your old skin cells to shed quicker to reveal smoother glowing skin without doing it everyday.

If you're using tretinoin for acne, you must keep using it. The same with anti-aging. Tretinoin is a medication that you should use for the rest of your life because your positive results disappear if you stop using it. Plus it helps prevent skin cancer, so that's another reason to keep being consistent.

Hi! I've been on 0.5 tretinoin for like 10ish months (was inconsistent in the beginning) and am JUST NOW seeing positive results after months of horrific, jaw-droppingly awful purging. It sounds like we had similar breakouts--when you say fungal acne are you talking about little bumps? I had those and more: blackheads in places I never got them, deep cystic pimples, and overall crazy inflammation with 4-5 active large breakouts at any given time.
I think this medication works much slower than most people think. Adding in niacinimide every morning (I use the peach and lily glass skin serum but probably tons of other good alternatives out there) has been a huge help in calming down inflammation. I still have one or two pimples once in a while but my skin today looked like a glazed donut! I'd recommend you keep going under careful supervision of your dermatologist and ask for their opinion. Mine prescribed me an oral and topical antibiotic to take along with the retinol and I think that's been a huge help as well. I also started taking fish oil since someone make a Tiktok about that helping their acne and I think it might have helped me?? Not sure but it's good for you anyway as long as you're not allergic and it works with any other meds you may be taking!
If your dermatologist says it's okay to keep going and you want to continue your tretinoin journey, check out the r/tretinoin subreddit. There's great before and afters to keep you motivated to see it through! I believe you will eventually end up there, it just takes a really really long time and you have to trust the process and fully commit as long as your derm says it's okay and you feel good about it! I'm personally glad I pushed through but it's completely up to you. Wearing a mask in public and investing in good concealer also helped me cope with the insecurity but there were some heartbreaking moments where I could barely look at myself in the mirror. Things got better for me and I hope they do for you too! I hope this was helpful. Let me know if you'd like to see some of my before and afters or if you want to message about it! Stay strong

@@maylene1323 Thank you so much for all this info. i’m about like 3-4 months into my tretinoin journey (alternating BHAs on off nights and benzoyl peroxide in the mornings) with a niacinamide rich cleanser and moisturizer. my acne is mainly hormonal, around my jaw, and it is extremely inflamed, raised, discolored, etc. i don’t have the tiny fungal bumps problem but my skin is the oily-type so i have many blackheads around my nose and overall enlarged pores.
ur comment really helped motivate me. a lot of skin gurus claim tretinoin yields results in 8-12 weeks, and i’m about to hit that mark and yet my skin gets increasingly worse. i am patient, i know these things take time and i’ve yet to shed a tear over my skin (don’t get me wrong, my acne case is quite severe) but because i had had perfect skin my whole life leading up until like 5 months ago. but my worsening condition… i don’t mean these localized areas around my jaw anymore. it has spread to my cheeks and i even get an occasional deep zit on my forehead.
i am super consistent with my routine and have cut out makeup as much as i can. i’ve completely changed my diet to cleaner eating and am working to cut out gluten, dairy, oily foods and excessive sugar. i have major scarring and pigmentation on my face.
our situations are very similar, though i’ve been desperately avoiding strong oral medications (well, i’ve been taking the omega three fish oils like you). actually, i consulted an herbal doctor and he gave me some more natural-ish pills to help with inflammation and hormonal balance. I do think it helped a bit.
Do you have any other tips for tretinoin? id love to hear it!

    • @maylene1323
      @maylene1323 3 роки тому

@@kellylu6217 Hi Kelly and Ju Lie, I actually think I jinxed it for myself because a few days after writing this comment, I got another round of breakouts with NO change at all in my routine, travel, diet or anything :((( It's made me question retinol in the first place and got me thinking back to before I first started the medication, and I realized my skin wasn't that bad in the first place, just like you said, Kelly. It was by no means perfect but not as bad as it is now. I feel like I want my old skin back.
Like you, I also have noticed throughout my retinol journey breakouts in places I never got them - for me my jaw was clear but my forehead and cheeks were an issue, but now I have it most heavily on my jawline. I read that breakouts where you don't normally get them are a sign of your products causing you to break out, and that purging would be mostly where you usually get it. This tells me that retinol is actively breaking me out.
I feel like we're all doing everything right and being very patient but not seeing results. I'm starting to think that this medication isn't for me and I'm going to suggest to my derm tomorrow that we stop it and see what happens. I was hesitant because I do notice that my acne-free areas look really nice (like baby skin). I also feel like I put SO much time into it and I'm afraid that if I stop and restart, I'll have to purge and peel all over again. But it's been almost a year for me and I realize my good skin days are the exception when they should be the rule. That's not how medicine should work, especially when I should be LONG past the purging stage. I have two friends who feel the same and both stopped their retinol in the past few weeks, and I don't know anyone IRL who uses it and likes it.
Ultimately, I see a lot of hype about this medication with almost nobody talking about the negatives. I've even heard people say they get hate if they say retinol didn't work for them. As someone who's been in the beauty/skincare community for a long time, I think this is a trend where people will hype something up to be the best thing ever, then ultimately lose interest or even realize it's harmful (see St. Ives scrub, the ordinary red acid peel thingy, purito sunscreen, MICRONEEDLING AT HOME :0 etc). No medicine on earth works for everyone, and maybe we're the rare people retinol doesn't work for, and that's okay! I'm going to look into other options with my derm and there is ALWAYS going to be something out there we can try. We have other options, and I think there are more people out there who are experiencing the same thing as us, just not coming forward.
I'm sorry if my original comment led any of you astray or persuaded you to continue with retinol when it wasn't right for you. As I said earlier and I'll repeat now, this should all be discussed with your dermatologist first and foremost. I wrote my first comment from a genuinely happy place on a day I had amazing skin and was thoroughly convinced that I was in the clear, but now I realize that was premature and want to correct my earlier comment. If things change for me once I stop retinol, I'll come back to this thread and update you all. I'm sincerely wishing anyone who reads this the best of luck on their skincare journey!
PS: Kelly, I will say that it sounds like you're using a lot of actives, and I've heard that they might interact (certainly benzoyl peroxide and retinol, and I know you're applying them at different times, but still). Does your derm know you're using these? It might be damaging your skin barrier to have so much going on, so I'd definitely ask your derm what they think.
PPS: Are you by chance Chinese? You mentioned an herbal doctor and my Chinese mom actually set up an appointment for me with a traditional Chinese medicine doctor so if that's who you saw, hopefully that helps me too :) I'm also assuming based on your last name but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi Rudi with your experience with tretinoin, would you recommend that it is used under the advice and supervision of a dermatologist? I gained my prescription for Tretinoin 0.025 from a GP who they didn’t even look at my skin. After reviewing videos online I decided to get the 0.05 I never stuck with either of these because I was always changing skincare products and have finally been able to repair my skin barrier after more than a year. Fortunately, I have an appointment in 2 weeks with a dermatologist. Strangely enough, the Tretinoin, particularly 0.025, appears to irritate my skin less than OTC retinol products. I just don’t know what is right for me skin, and I must admit I am afraid of using Tretinoin on my skin without professional and personable medical advice as tretinoin is a potent prescription only medication and for good reason too

so when you say it took you a while to get to 3 nights frequency does that mean you didn't follow what your dermatologist's prescribed as the frequency? I'm just struggling cause like the last time I went to the dermatologist and emphasized how the purging was the worst part since its been a couple months they couldn't give me a timeline of how long the purging is and honestly they made me feel like it was crazy that I was complaining about the purging. I'm annoyed cause I'm like do they not know what they are doing?? ://

I’ve been using tret about 2 months now, and while there’s light peeling (no irritation), I find that on nights I use tret (0.05 cream) the following morning I’m am SUUUPERRR oily, more so than than my normal oily skin. Anyone else experience this? Also, beyond the extra oiliness, I haven’t really seen much of a difference elsewhere. I’m thinking of switching to 0.1 gel.

I'm also facing the same problem now. I have a very oily acne prone skin with scars and not so good texture. I'm on my fifth month now didn't faced any purging or irritation and also didn't notice any visible change in my skin but from past few days i feel like it makes my skin darker and even more oilier so i stop using it and now thinking to use serums instead of this cream.

i've been tested on gel and cream, cream is way more effective and if you really have oily skin(i am super oily skin), try upgrade to 0.05% after finishing this. The correct way to use tretinoin is at least 0.5g for your entire face and 1g to bring to your neck, it is suggested to use 1/3 of your fingers(sorry i don't know how to say in English, i am meaning a phase of your finger), follow with your sunscreen during daytime and daily exfoliation is great to enhance your tretinoin effectiveness~
