Thank you! My 04 started idling rough the other day, and the valves were clanging too. Took it to Ford dealer, and guess what they said? "You need a new engine, and converters on both sides. $8600." Something didn't sound right to me, so I started investigating and found you. While I am no mechanic, I did find one who agrees this issue is NOT a bad engine, and I am gonna have him watch this video because this is exactly what my truck is doing. Again, thank you!!
The past two days a slowly removed and replaced the original VTS from my 2009 Ford Expedition 5.4L. The real hassle was unhooking and moving to the side all the hoses and stuff blocking a quick removal of the valve covers. Per your advice I bought two brand new FORD VTS from Amazon. WOW the Expedition has quick power just like brand new and its burning less fuel. I have a valve cover gasket that did not seat well and I have to loosen all the valve cover bolts again and realign the gasket but hay thats simple enough considering.
My f-150 with 5.4 3v stalls if I don’t ease the gas, I just replaced all of the timing components, both solenoids, phasers, chains and all that. Doesn’t make any engine noise at all. P0304 cylinder 4 misfire. That’s it. Wont barely pull itself down the road.
I have a 2008 F150 5.4 and was having the issues you mentioned. I pulled the plugs on the VCTs today and the truck runs better than ever (only had it a year though), and no hot idle, out of time stalling. Thanks for your great tips and information. I wonder how long I can run like this and if there may be damage associated if I do. Thanks again.

Took my truck to a mechanic, Anything Auto in Gallatin, TN, after spending $3518.00 and returning the truck back to him, he tells me to come and get the truck he can't fix it......I'm having these same issues in the video and more........
I wish you wouldn't have made so many of these videos, because I think I have repaired everything in my 5.4 that you have made a video on. Seriously, and if you make one and say it's a common issue, I go right to the store and get the parts to get it over with.

@@freeaudiobooks7469 I am wondering the same thing. I looked up the recall history and nothing! They MUST have known about this but did NOTHING! Aggravating to say the least.
I've had many 5.4 engines, mainly in Navigators but I always would trade them at around 60,000 or so miles. My current one has 174,000 miles and everything you described was happening to mine. Very rough idle at times, loss of power at highways speeds. You could raise the rpm in traffic to around 2,500 rpm and it was idle normally for a while. This told me it probably wasn't the phasers but rather the vct solenoids. I took your advice and unplugged both vct solenoids and went for a thirty mile drive. It was so nice to have a smooth running Navigator again. I had already ordered the vct solenoids and plan to swap them out this Sunday, I also had replaced both camshaft sensors. You are without a doubt the 5.4 king on youtube and I will be buying some merch just to support you. Thank you so much for this video!
Yes what did you find out? Are these engines really worth it they make it sound like a smooth running engine running how an engine is supposed to is some sort of miracle blessing
I cannot express enough gratitude and thankfulness for you having post your videos so that people like me and the others who own a 5.4 Triton Ford engine have some way of getting home instead of having to walk thanks a lot.
Just did this on my 2007 5.4. Worked like a charm. Had to unbolt the power steering reservoir and move it out of the way to get to the solenoid on the right side, but easy to do. Truck feels slow on acceleration as expected, but no more shake, rattle and stall.
Thank you so much! Quality and honest work is priceless and its a dying set of habits unfortunately! You should be proud of your self. I would be! God bless!
Just get one from out of the salt belt otherwise you'll be dealing with rust instead of a vct issue. Older vehicles are simpler, but you need to get under the vehicle more often.
the first gen 2v 5.4 V8's are also super reliable, arguably on par with the old OHV plants. Just snug the sparkplugs down so you dont have a blow out and they run forever.

I work in an auto repair shop. A few months ago, a customer showed up with a F 150 he had recently bought, for an oil change. He also wanted a scan for the check engine light. Long story short, the used car dealer had disconnected the two solenoids and put the connectors back on the solenoids without clicking them. To the untrained eye, it looked like they were fully in. I got no problem with a $700 repair after nearly a quarter million miles. Looking forward to another quarter million!

I just did complete timing job on it myself watching your videos. Replaced parts by Ford proginal parts and that high pressure pump that you recommend. Went for a test and the same P0012 and P0022 are still there. Same 12.26 degrees off over retarded on each bank is still there and now it stalls on idle all the time. Before was rarely happening. @FordTechMakuloco 04, 5.4 its. I had this problem ever since150k and driving still @298k. So if I change the vct solenoid will that help with the ticking or will it just continue with the diesel noise, as everyone thinks its a diesel engine?
i have a 2004 f150 5.4L, it runs but wont idle everytime i let off the gas it stalls, and when you first press the gas it sputters till it revs up, any help on what the problem may be would be greatly appreciated
Thanks alot for this video. I have an 06 w/ a 5.4 & 165k on it. Been hearing that tapping noise for awhile. It stalled out yesterday while driving w/ my kids. I pulled over, parked, turned off, waited & restarted and had no more problems. Scared the hell out of me because I lost all power steering & engine power. I found your video this morning, disconnected the components and drove it for 5 miles. No problems & even better, no check engine light either! Thanks again for helping a non-mechanic feel safe driving with his family. Have a great day.
Thank you my 06 F150 is doing the same thing after I had a complete timing kit done about six months ago. I’m going to unplug the VCT’s and see if that makes a difference. I am so tired of throwing money away at this thing I’m almost ready to sell ugh
what are your opinions on the new escapes, I rented one with an ecoboost in it ( I don't know which engine exactly but the vehicle was an SE). I know almost all eco boosts are known for the carbon issues on the intake valves ( which happens to almost all GDI engines) but anything I should watch out for on the newer escapes.
Dude you are the man worked like a charm. In Florida so no emissions here. Wonder if that means I can just leave it unplugged indefinitely or are there other drawbacks?
How many miles have you ran it unplugged? What are the mpgs now? Mine became horrible w it still plugged in unless it’s actually a vacuum leak p0174 but has all these vct/timing symptoms it seems, wondering if exhaust manifolds could cause it smoke test didn’t show much leaking at all anywhere in engine bay
Thanks for this valuable video, I have a 05 F-150 5.4L it would stall on stops, and backing up and just run rough and noisy sometimes, I had just changed the spark plugs no go!! Until I found your video, thanks a lot, I know I'm going to have to get that repair I have 225K I love my truck this gives me time hopefully to save up for the repairs, THANKS AGAIN!!
My 08 Ford Expedition is doing the same thing! Started the stalling when in reverse a few weeks ago, took it to Walmart for oil change, now it sounds like a diesel and just horrible! Looks like they didn’t change the oil filter and also looks like it’s over filled with oil! I called them but they say they didn’t overfill it and it’s not their problem! I don’t know what to do as I cannot afford a mechanic and the labor. We checked the codes and it gave a a P0305 so my husband changed the coil. We thought it was fixed until we drove it a few miles. There it was again!! That loud diesel sounding knock! He loves this suv and I’m praying that we can get some advice that’ll help and fix this issue. Thumbs up on this video and subbed 👍🏼Definitely a great channel! Oh! We have no check engine lights on and it sounds horrible!!
FordTechMakuloco was wondering i have an 2007 ford f150 with the 5.4 and i have a three inch lift and 34 inch tires i am getting about 8.3-9 mpg on a tank of gas and was wondering if this is normal fuel consumption when it comes to around town and stop and go traffic or is this a problem with the timing of motor runs very smooth though was just looking for some input thank you.
My truck did this a while back(a couple of months ago), so I took it to a Ford dealership to have they figure out what was causing it. They had it for about a week and could not reproduce the issue and there were no codes in the CPU for them to go on. It has only happened once or twice since then!
So if i have this ticking problem Is the phasers the ones bad even if i find a busted tensioner Should be the phaser the ones that really need to be replaced or could it be the other components?
My 2000 5.4l will start but stall, once i rev for a while and let it die ill start it again and with a small rev it will stay on, but this only happens when it has been sitting overnight or after work, after i get it finally going it will be star fine after quick shut offs to get gas, shop at the store etc, only at large amount of time will it not want to work. The mechanic found no codes either, the computer is brand new, recently replaced. He said i just need to drive it until it leaves me stranded, or throw money at it now.....

I was stuck Sunday night with my family leaving a restaurant and this happen to me. Thanks to your video I was able to get them home safe.
How long can you run it with these disconnected.?
I just did complete timing job on it myself watching your videos. Replaced parts by Ford proginal parts and that high pressure pump that you recommend. Went for a test and the same P0012 and P0022 are still there. Same 12.26 degrees off over retarded on each bank is still there and now it stalls on idle all the time. Before was rarely happening. Im so frustrated...
I did everything you did sir but my check engine light didn’t come on afterwords, is that concerning?
How come it doesn’t go through the dinging chime thing system checks when you turned the key on after unplugging vcts?
+FordTechMakuloco I have a 2005 Ford f150 5.4l and my barometric sensor is giving me a 30.7inKG reading(or 104kpa) its telling my truck Im at -750 feet altitude. Do you know where the sensor is? Is there anything else thay can cause this issue. Please help. Ford dealership keep telling my my truck is fine and sending me away because its not throwing any codes.

Simply brilliance! Just oozing with knowledge! I got rid of my 2004 F150 5.4Triton POS for a 2012 3.5EB. She's better, but she's still a Ford, lol. I had no idea what the purpose of the VCT was related to, and I'm glad you touched on it, Brian. Another awesome video. Semper Fi.
The 3.5 EcoBoost is trash. Nothing wrong with Ford that isn't a problem with everyone else.
U r a flippin genius!! Always great videos!! If anybody reads this, go back and watch some of his older videos on replacing heater cores and servo control motors in and behind the dash. They r absolute classics. One where he sort of hinges the whole dash out while leaving most everything connected. Can’t wait till u get your rack. The kind that lifts cars up. Loo
Your base engine problem (oil psi) is still there with the VCT solenoids disconnected.
darkknight6009 Even with good oil pressure the phasers (as in Star Wars) r toast. The oil pressure is not the problem. Clean10/30 and he’s golden. Oh. Phasers and chains too. But the Magic Man can make that happen in a day. Including coffee breaks.
God bless you man. I just did what you did on my 05 f150 and it appears to be fixed. No stalls in the past 30 minutes and doesn’t idle violently
are you still driving with them unplugged or how long did you?
@@JA-cx3wd have you tried? I'm about to tackle this soon. Was worried the same. Truck is at 300k dont wanna pay 2k for my beater to be fixed.
Hi, i have a issue with a message oil low presure and safe mode engine. To fix this issue, I followed the instructions to said in this video, I unpluged both side. I have a F150 5.4l 2008 with 170,000 kms.Thank you
@FordTechMakuloco
04, 5.4 its. I had this problem ever since150k and driving still @298k. So if I change the vct solenoid will that help with the ticking or will it just continue with the diesel noise, as everyone thinks its a diesel engine?
Thanks!
i have a 2004 f150 5.4L, it runs but wont idle everytime i let off the gas it stalls, and when you first press the gas it sputters till it revs up, any help on what the problem may be would be greatly appreciated
Did it work ?
@@jaybo516 selling it probably did
what are your opinions on the new escapes, I rented one with an ecoboost in it ( I don't know which engine exactly but the vehicle was an SE). I know almost all eco boosts are known for the carbon issues on the intake valves ( which happens to almost all GDI engines) but anything I should watch out for on the newer escapes.
I have a 2006 4.6 the started to turns off randomly at stops
I don't know, but I'm going to unplug mine in the morning and just leave it unplugged by God!
Dude you are the man worked like a charm. In Florida so no emissions here. Wonder if that means I can just leave it unplugged indefinitely or are there other drawbacks?
Great ask. Did you leave it unplugged?
@@DroopyS1990 Since that comment it has been unplugged with no issues, purrs like a kitten. (Relatively it has the exhaust manifold leak)
What about now?
Still unplugged lol. I haven't noticed anything@@sa3dgh
What about now?
When can I bring you my 04 f150 to replace the phasers chains tensioners Etc?
Please fill out the service request form so we can schedule you in- bsgautomotive.com/contact/
Thanks for doing this video. What happens if you just let them unplugged..
I have the same issue stalls and rough idles I disconnected the wires and is still doing the same thing
probably spark plug or coil pack related then
How do u fix this like what’s the cost of this kind of situation and how long can u leave unplugged??
Video idea, How about changing clutch packs in a 9.75 LS rear end?
wow wait wait i did what you said how on earth my truck runs like new with them being unplug so dose this mean i need my solenoid replace
So what's the fix? Changed coils plugs and have the vct disconnected and still sounds like a diesel and stalls
Thank you so much for the video. Worked perfectly.
so what is it that needs replaced ? Because I have this exact problem? the tensioners?
How much time I can run the truck with the VCT system unplugged
Been driving my 2004 3v this way for a long time. I’m at almost 300k miles.
2004 was a 2v 5.4 not a 3v
@@troylabreck3900 no. Mine is the 2005 body style 2004 model. It was actually made in 2003! Swear to it. It’s a 3v.
@@troylabreck3900 mines 2004 and its 3v
I'm having the same exact problem! :(
its the backing up that started triggering it for me D:
What did you find out? My mpg took a nose dive and wondering if this is the issue and if I can just unplug vct to help situation
My truck did this a while back(a couple of months ago), so I took it to a Ford dealership to have they figure out what was causing it.
They had it for about a week and could not reproduce the issue and there were no codes in the CPU for them to go on.
It has only happened once or twice since then!
So if i have this ticking problem
Is the phasers the ones bad even if i find a busted tensioner
Should be the phaser the ones that really need to be replaced or could it be the other components?
If you have the phaser noise and or the stalling at stops the tensioner is the root cause causing everything else to fail.
FordTechMakuloco
Ok thanks but id have the stall at stops too..
Hello, my 2012 ford expedition engine high shaking when I stopped from long distance and once I accelerate its go back to normal status this happened after a month from making engine overhauling.. so, can you help me what can I do to fix it .. everything in the engine replaced with genuine parts.
mohammad b did you resolve the issue?
I WATCH UR VIDEOS AND HAVE FIXED MY TRUCK NUMEROUS TIMES WITH YOUR VIDEOS!! THANKS,
I just bought a high mileage 06 that's doing that very thing thank you
Is it still working?
So ive replaced the heads along with all new timing components and phasers and vct, but my truck does the same as in the video i bought all of the special tools.. any help please
Same. We changed out the phasers, chains, alternator, remade the gaskets for the tensioners because they were blown out and I still have this issue.
Same I got an 07 I spent 2k replacing the whole timing system and it's still doing it.. mechanic told me befor I changed it that I might have to swap the engin .. previous owner ran it like this for too long with it constantly dieing n shit ended up with metal shavings in my oil pan still not exactly sure from where
@@chinofree9143 I feel so sad for you. Just get rid of it? So sad :(
Same here. Open heart surgery three times and have all timing components replaced. Still stalls at stops, sometimes has no power. Do I give up??? Shit. It does sound really good at idle.. maybe I trade it in ...
@@evenkeeler It could be the Crank Shift and the cam shaft look into that Goo. Stalling can be due to many reasons. Why don't you take it into the mechanic he tells you what it is and you take it home and fix it instead of guessing. I do that once in a while ...
very good video thank you,,
Worked on my 2000 f150 bi-fuel...
Thanks
Are the 5.0 engines showing any issues yet or did Ford fix most of the issues they had with the 5.4 3V?
Reg L 5.0 engines are much better. I wouldn't touch a 4.6 or 5.4 3 valve. Older 2 valve are fantastic and I would have no problem with the 5.0. Would even get it over the ecoboost.
I have a 04 FX4 CREW CAB ford F 150,and I've changed the fuel actuator, fuel positions senser both cam shaft senser MAF sensor and it still won't idle it's up and down stalls skips ! I have new plugs AMD coil pack on each plug AMD it still won't run without sounding and driving like crap ! Help ! SOS
I forgot I also put a new timing chains and oil pump
Will it cause them to like stop.pulling a little then kick in and go??
You fixed my shit!!!
My 05 5.4l dies at idle when I have the a.c. on. What should I look into. Thank you sir. Plz tell me
