You basically have to take the engine down to the short block to do the chains, since the oil pump is built into the timing cover, and that can’t be removed without pulling the upper pan. I have a 2003 E350 with a 2 valve 5.4. The original engine went to 575,000 miles, only replaced coilpacks and intake and once and plugs every 100k. Replaced it with a Motorcraft reman, which is still going with 874,000 miles on the van I absolutely love Fords, using Motorcraft parts and fluids as much as I can.

My Launch scan tool has the IDS style power balance screen, it is awesome and gets used often! Just had one last week, customer only checks his oil when the oil light comes on, lol.
The spark plugs issues we on pre 99 5.4 engines. Second time a plug blew out my buddy put a 99 5.4 in it for me. Not only did that fix the plug issue, it's got 30 more horsepower and a ton of low end touque! Got a three valve truck now, and yes, had the phazers locked out before that was an issue. Got 253000 on it now and I tow a 5400lb camper with it. And yes, it will cut across 6 lanes of traffic to get to a gas pump, but towing does little to effect fuel consumption!
You just know your stuff, awesome videos, thanks man,I wished I was close enough to your shop to have my 05 5.4 3v . I'm not sure who to trust here, there are so many crooks, and the rest just don't have the knowledge that you obviously have!
He earns more if you watch the commercials and Like the videos. Best thing to do is let the opening commercial run to the end while browsing the comments, then watch the video. Takes a minute longer but UA-cam pays Brian more if people watch the videos, etc. So you can "say thanks and give back" that way and it's painless - you're gonna watch the whole video anyway.
Brian I have a question: Based on your experience, do you think shops prematurely swap out the 5.4 3 valve engine because of its negative history when all they require is a complete timing job? There are other youtubers that are quick to condemn this engine and opt for a reman. I did the timing job 5 years ago with your help and the engine runs smooth as silk.
Only time I've had an intake issue with a three valve was with an '04 with 276k miles. Brake master cylinder was dumping fluid into the booster and the customer just kept topping it off until it eventually started sucking the fluid into the intake. All it did was ruin the gaskets at the heads. New Booster and Master cylinder, resealed the intake. And two weeks later the timing set and cats gave up (clogged bank 2 converter and bank 2 stationary guide broke).
I wish I had seen this. I had MF on CYL 1 and 6. I was driving, thought it was clogged injectors, engine locked up at 93 mph. Came to a stop. Seen my timing guide was nonexistent on the driver's side. Definitely check the timing always. The 5.4 is a good engine with the right parts. I had 290xxx on my engine. Now I'm about to install a reman because I didn't realize my timing was bad. My ignorance.
Good to se their are some good technicians still left in the world everyone wants to be a tech till they can’t diagnose then they have to take it to a professional!!
I have a 2005 F150 5.4 3 valve and all original timing components WITH 334,000 miles. Just change your fully synthetic oil every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. I have a misfire every once in a great while, and this year I see my engine light go on, and the indicator light now blinks. Testing it at Auto Zone proves a misfire, but doesn't say what cylinder is at fault. Is there a testing devise that I can go to test what specific cylinder is acting up? Don't want to end up at the dealership for an expensive diagnosis. Thanks for the video. THUMBS UP!!!
I've thus far avoided owning a vehicle with variable valve timing. Since I've ALWAYS done ALL my repairs (except a TH400 rebuild back in '82 on the G/A : )... and it's getting tougher at my age... I just don't see the additional complexity and potential headaches being counterbalanced by any supposed benefits. My '02 Focus (owned 19 years), '65 Ford 250 (owned 24 years) and '74 Grand Am (owned 44 years) have always done JUST FINE without : )
I own one vehicle with it, a 2014 Mustang GT, but it only has 33,000 miles on it so hopefully I won't see any issues for a very long time. Everything else I own is from the 70's or 90's. 98 Chevy Z71 bought new, 98 K3500 owned for almost 14 years, 1992 Chevy Cavalier owned for 15 years, and my 70 Monte Carlo owned for 34 years.
You’d think that someone at the first shop would have just sprayed some carb cleaner around the intake manifold. That’s the cheapest, easiest test there is for intake leaks. 🤷🏻♂️
Not necessarily . The Dodge 5.2 Magnum no matter how much carb cleaner , brake cleaner or even propane poured around the intake will show an vacuum leak . The data told me it had a leak but tests did not . Reluctantly i changed the intake and plenum gaskets and all was fine . I'm not an idiot so before someone points out the video was about a Ford 5.4 i am just saying the mechanic in a can doesn't always work all the time .. It is obvious that the first shop much like countless shops and Techs everywhere were unable to diagnose an issue using strictly date . Way too many Techs just look at the codes and replace parts according to the code . Data will tell a good Tech more than a code or codes ever will .
@@7natcho The problem with this case wasn't that the data was indicating a leak, it was in fact saying the opposite. So, either they didn't look at the data, or they didn't know how to interpret the data. I the case of your leak, you could see the leak in the data , but couldn't pinpoint the source, so gambled and it worked out. There is a chance that the vacuum leak was somewhere else that was eliminated via the process of changing intake gaskets, like a leaking pcv hose, brake booster hose, etc.
@@D2O2 when using carb cleaner to find vacuum leaks on modern cars you have observe fuel trims while looking for the leak. Unfortunately the primary diagnostic tool used by many mechanics is a parts cannon.
Watched it through and good video. Ashame I'll never need it, 30yrs fords and chevys and 5 yrs now in a Tundra. Never own another Ford Chevy Dodge again ever.
What was the overall fix? Stated was timing job, does that mean it was those phaser gears that were replaced? I am next to positive my 05 is having this issue and so far mechanic's in Reading PA aren't as good as you
This isn’t the first vid that Brian has done showing how he diagnosed the engine problem. Hook up the scanner, read the data and go from there. It’s literally that simple. It’s the type of data that’s read is key.
I brought my truck into the dealership and specially asked for them to change the phasers here in Alaska. It sounds like a diesel truck at idle. All they did was charge me a ton of money for diagnosis and an oil change, saying everything is within specs and refused to replace the phasers. I've lost all faith in the dealership as they don't want to actually fix anything besides selling me stuff I didn't ask for and refusing to do what I came in for.
I have an 05' 5.4 3 valve...with just under 80k it was my father's truck who has dementia, and gave the truck to me....around 75k i started having to replace coil packs And plugs.....my buddy was a manager at a local garage....but not aa mechanic....he xould run the diagnostic Snap On computer......i ordered 2 cheap VVT sensors....to have it run to where it would run rough, go into limp mode? And die at every stop. The store manager at an Advance Auto i used to work for told me to only use Motorcraft sensors, that for some reason that's just how it is. My buddies diagnostic says its throwing VVT sensors on both sides. Should i take the 200.00 gamble....There's a delete? Also was told to stay away from cheap timing kits ....so JEGS makes one with the bigger mellings oil pump designed specifically for the small drain holes in the heads. Kit us around 800.00 And around 75.00 hr for labor.....this was my father's truck....I'm 46 and want to keep the truck because it's all i have left that we both enjoyed. And is a VVT sensor jib something i could do ...I changed the plugs and coil packs.... Would appreciate some feedback here in Boyd Co. Kentucky....please!!
Easy to do the VVT sensors on your 2005, you will need new VVT sensor grommets though if you decide not to pull the valve covers. Always buy Ford sensors and internal engine parts with the exception the Melling oil pump.
What causes these phasers to fail? Also, I have a 2015 Explorer..3.5l..Naturally aspirated..I believe this engine has direct injection and variable valve timing..(phasers)..83K miles..Driven conservatively with frequent full synthetic oil changes might it make 200K miles without carbon build up or timing issues? So far no problems..
Poor maintenance is a large contributor, such as lack of oil changes, or going too long in between oil changes. This particular engine looked fairly clean inside, then again it may not be original engine.
Brian, I have a serious challenge here with my 04 F150. When I turn on my headlights and drive at night, everything seems ok. But if I turn on my heater or AC, my turn signals no longer work. My radio/CD player light and time flashes on and off, and sometimes my radar detector turns on and off swiftly over and over. Everything still drives fine, it just exhibits these strange symptoms. Also my dash lights went completely dark too. But here's the worst, if I throw the truck in park or if its already in park with the heater or AC on, it won't let me shift out of park into any gear, UNLESS I fidget with the headlight switch (on and off until it lets me shift). There is a Code Alarms car alarm wired in, and I dont use it at all... I realize it could be a wiring issue, but I was really hoping it could be simply a fuse blown or severely damaged. Any ideas from your end? Some spitballing here would be greatly appreciated!!!!! This single issue is a bane in my existence!!!
You said that this truck has 168,000.0 miles on it which is pretty good for original timing components. I have a 2006 with 567,000.0 miles on it with original timing components that is still running strong with no issues. I am the original owner. Would you be interested in seeing this truck?
I got 2019 f150 3.5 ecoboost and phasers r loud. Need replacement. Tired of check engine light turning on than off the next day. Losses power and fuel economy also. I need ur magic to fix this issue for me. Tired of waiting for letter from dealership to have them do a phaser replacement
Dude I am just amazed by your expertise!! If I may, I have an 08 escape 2.3 with a noticable shake on idle. Let me clarify when under load ie. AC on and in drive. With ac off the idle is slot smoother. I'm about to clean iacv, any other input?
Its a shame, but I would almost be willing to ship my truck from florida up to illinois to your shop to get major work done. At least I would know it was done right.
Todd, we had that noise a few years ago and Brian has about 4 videos that I followed to change out the phasers, VTC's, timing components, etc. Recommend that you do the same (or have someone else do it). Use only the brand of parts that he recommends and don't try to save money with junk parts that have been known to fail.
No one in my area want to touch my 2011 5.4 3v. Have a slight tick at low rpms when in Drive or Reverse. But drives normal otherwise. Have noticed when I'm coming to a stop the engine seems to shoot up in rpms right before it come to a complete shop. All three places I've taken it too simply get in move it in the bay and all said it needs a complete timing job.
Mines has a cylinder no 3 missfire.. 204,589 miles... changed cam sensors runs better... also the old cam sensors had some metal shavings on them... 2006 ford expedition limited
Im sure he works on all types of fords and many other makes, BUT he built this channel and has a strong following due to people having a lot of issues with these motors, mainly because of misdiagnosed issues, hack mechanics or lack of maintenance from previous owners. He’s the “5.4 Superman” for many folks..
Yes he does. The 5.4 3v is his specialty. There are lots of Ford vehicles on the road today with those engines ; I see them everyday as a truck driver. He cut his Ford mechanical teeth on those engines a long time ago.
So what after you had new timing chains, phasers, oil pump, vam followers all of that replaced and you end up with a rough idle and misfire codes and the engine light will actually start flashing during idle or trying to drive the truck.
Parts changers that call themselves mechanics know nothing about troubleshooting. I've worked with people like this for many years when I was a line mechanic. I'm 76 yrs and retired. I think I would like to bring you my 2012 5.0L F-150 when it needs service if you would. I'm in Arkansas, not that far.
Have you noticed when most techs have nothing else to check because its out of their skill level, they say cracked intake but if they would have any experience, they would know that only causes a lean condition more air lean less air more fuel is rich!!!!
So yeah I got one 08' 80xxx miles. Has a knocking noise after it has been driven for a bit. Also when cold it will have a slight ruff idle and smoke white from exhaust till warm? Other than that it runs pretty good and no check engine light.
These videos are great! I have 2017 2.7L V6 Twin Turbo Eco Boost, only 42k mi. The truck has been in and out of the dealer for about 7 weeks now. Car stalls at stop, never while driving. What's my problem!
You’ve help me so much with my truck. Thank you. But now I have a issue I can’t figure out. I have a 2007 f150 lariat 5.4. Flex fuel. 109kmiles. I keep getting a blinking cylinder eight misfire. I’ve changed the plugs the coils the fuel injector fuel driver torque converter fuel filter. It starts shattering only going up Long Hills Other than that the truck runs perfect. I also have a p0461 code now. What can be my issue? Thanks

My Launch scan tool has the IDS style power balance screen, it is awesome and gets used often!
Just had one last week, customer only checks his oil when the oil light comes on, lol.
I'm totally bringing you my 2004 f150!
Ford Dealerships should make their techs subscribe to your channel.
You just know your stuff, awesome videos, thanks man,I wished I was close enough to your shop to have my 05 5.4 3v . I'm not sure who to trust here, there are so many crooks, and the rest just don't have the knowledge that you obviously have!
The best way I've found is to get experience and Do it yourself🤷♂️
My Ford 5.4 3 valve has 286,000 miles on it and still running strong thank God.
Those bolsters are intact and the leather looks to be taken care of. That truck seems minty. It looks amazing
Don’t slide in and out and watch your weight. This truck is proof a seat can survive decades and still look like new.
content so good its shocking we get it for free
He earns more if you watch the commercials and Like the videos. Best thing to do is let the opening commercial run to the end while browsing the comments, then watch the video. Takes a minute longer but UA-cam pays Brian more if people watch the videos, etc. So you can "say thanks and give back" that way and it's painless - you're gonna watch the whole video anyway.
This guy knows his fords.
Brian I have a question: Based on your experience, do you think shops prematurely swap out the 5.4 3 valve engine because of its negative history when all they require is a complete timing job? There are other youtubers that are quick to condemn this engine and opt for a reman. I did the timing job 5 years ago with your help and the engine runs smooth as silk.
yes and yes.
In God we trust, all others bring data. Nice, logical, well explained approach. Thx Brian!
Man you are a savior!!!!!!! Thanks so much so many mis leading people and you are spot on
Please do a fuel pump replacement on 2010 Ford F-150 5.4. 3v please
It would try to add fuel not sure subtract it. No reason to even spray the intake just understand what the computer is telling you.
Friggin’ computers - amirite?
Seems pretty obvious that they didn’t look at the data
It’s too bad I didn’t have one of you up here in Canada
Another insightful video, thanks for all you do for these 5.4s!
Thank you for all the info you share.
Watched it through and good video. Ashame I'll never need it, 30yrs fords and chevys and 5 yrs now in a Tundra. Never own another Ford Chevy Dodge again ever.
You should change your moniker to Dr. Ford tech. Very Dr. House of you.
Fantastic video , you should start your own tech school for fords you would do great !
you sir are a maestro.
You are a true Professional !!!
just an insanely good mechanic
What was the overall fix? Stated was timing job, does that mean it was those phaser gears that were replaced? I am next to positive my 05 is having this issue and so far mechanic's in Reading PA aren't as good as you
This isn’t the first vid that Brian has done showing how he diagnosed the engine problem. Hook up the scanner, read the data and go from there. It’s literally that simple. It’s the type of data that’s read is key.
I have a 2006 Ford Mustang 4.0 V6 and it’s showing codes saying all four o2 sensors heater circuit is bad
The most probably you problem is a fuse.. or one signal between all 02 sensors

Very interesting video as always. Thanks for posting.
Good job, 187,000 miles!
Kit us around 800.00
And around 75.00 hr for labor.....this was my father's truck....I'm 46 and want to keep the truck because it's all i have left that we both enjoyed.
Poor original design.
Poor maintenance is a large contributor, such as lack of oil changes, or going too long in between oil changes. This particular engine looked fairly clean inside, then again it may not be original engine.
Bad engineering
Hell, my '07 Triton has 252k on the original timing hardware. I do plan on replacing them sooner than later though.
You never know, you might have that 1 rare one that'll go, and go, and goooooooooooooooooooo lol

Check the cluster panel. All the I believe runs through it. It's a easy replace if you can find one. Just a thought!
You said that this truck has 168,000.0 miles on it which is pretty good for original timing components. I have a 2006 with 567,000.0 miles on it with original timing components that is still running strong with no issues. I am the original owner. Would you be interested in seeing this truck?
What if my engine doesn't have VCTs? I have a 2000 f150 XL but I am getting this kind of rough idle.
Wish you were close by, brought my 2005 FX4 to a Ford dealership and they can’t find the problem on my truck.
Thats EXACTLY how my truck sounds.
I can use My FJDS for all of this thats super cool man!!!!
Those 5.4 will keep you employed.....that's for sure.

I have a noticable clunk, when the iacv kicks in. If I put my hands on the air box. I have no other ideas except for the drive belt system?
Its a shame, but I would almost be willing to ship my truck from florida up to illinois to your shop to get major work done. At least I would know it was done right.
Customers do it all the time, I have two shipments inbound as we speak from transport companies.
What does a timing job cost, i have rattle at start up. Im assuming one of the guides has broke.190,000 miles
Phasers set to stun 🤷♂️
Mines has a cylinder no 3 missfire.. 204,589 miles... changed cam sensors runs better... also the old cam sensors had some metal shavings on them... 2006 ford expedition limited
Awesome clean motor I wish mine look like that
Man everything seems to be about this Triton 5.4 in the F150. Do you work on any other fords or what?
I have a rough running after warm up. No codes,I just installed remand engine
Also my longft are at 0, shortft is -7 b1 but normal -3 b2, I don't have vcterr on my scanner
An excellent video. Thank you!
Have you noticed when most techs have nothing else to check because its out of their skill level, they say cracked intake but if they would have any experience, they would know that only causes a lean condition more air lean less air more fuel is rich!!!!
ballpark, what does a cam phaser replacement cost on these engines? I know labor is variable.
What errors is it throwing?
What do you think about using a zinc oil additive for 543v high mileage 180,000+ engines or just using full synthetic or Ford standard oil mix???
Anything will help.
Too much zinc will screw up your catalytic converters.
Just use a high quality full synthetic oil made for high mileage engines...
So the rough idle all comes back to the timing job required done?
I really wish you were in California.
Thanks
The orange in the radiator reservoir, is that normal? Mine has the same sedimentary looking stuff in it and I thought it was stop leak
yes it comes with time.
@@FordTechMakuloco should I do a coolant flush?
Would a cracked manifold cause a vacuum leak? Couldn't one just spray some starting fluid and listen to the engine for a change in rpm.
Great work!
Maybe you could answer this. How much would you say is a reasonable price on having a complete timing job done on a 04 f150 5.4
But, what was there repair? Did you change the phasor on bank 1? Is that all?
