I just came from your Corvette ign sw video to here. Hope you are learning stuff every day! I am, and I've been a tech for 53 years! (Now retired, but never too old to learn.)
Ford dealerships should require all of their technicians to watch your videos. Hats off to you Brian! You definitely stand out from the crowd. I definitely enjoy all the videos and information you provide. Just last night I watched your video on motorcraft coolants. My '12 Taurus needs to have the coolant changed and I couldn't understand why I couldn't find the Motorcraft orange coolant anyway except ebay which had crazy prices. I did find a technical bulletin from Ford explaining why they discontinued the orange coolant and to switch over to the yellow coolant. My initial thoughts were is it compatible with the orange coolant? Then it dawned on me to see if you made a video about the coolants. Low and behold I found your video explaining all of Ford coolants. After watching, it eased my mind and was nothing for me to worry about. I then watched your video on how you flush out a Ford's cooling system. I'm retired now and have 50+ yrs of automotive... mainly GM until I wised up and switched over to Ford...haha and have 25 yrs working on commercial aircraft. I still enjoy working on my cars for the limited knowledge I have on today's modern vehicles to a certain point. There's no need for me to invest in all the equipment and tools needed today to work on my vehicles so when I do need repairs done to the point that is way beyond my knowledge there is a Ford dealership I use that have some excellent technicians and have always been more than pleased with the work they preform. I watched your video on your new 2021 F150 and thought to myself the systems on today's vehicles are just about as complicated as systems on commercial aircraft. It's mind blowing for sure. If I lived anywhere close to you you'd without a doubt would be my go to technician. Keep the great videos coming.

Watched because my 2000 F-150 with the two valve 5.4 Triton was showing a lean condition and adding 20-25% fuel trim. The intake was warped, confirmed with the propane test, so I replaced it and also replaced the coils and plugs, EGR, PCV valve and hose, injector o-rings and vacuum lines and cleaned the mass airflow sensor while it was apart. It still gave lean codes so I smoke tested it and it passed. Took it to an independent shop that would actually listen to me and what I had done. I worked on general aviation aircraft at one time and built two street rods so the skills were there. We all agreed that it ~looked~ like a vacuum leak on the diagnostics but I told the shop owner that I really believed it was a sensor somewhere; I just didn't have the experience or resources to verify that. They checked the O2 sensors first and then found that the MAF sensor was sending bad data. Their diagnostics weren't cheap but the problem was fixed. There is no telling what a dealership might have "diagnosed" and how much it would have cost. I have no desire to own a later style Ford engine. The F-150 is just used for hauling things, 2000-3000 miles/year that won't fit in a car or SUV so it should last me another 10-20 years.
I went to three shops to get my phaser fixed, they all said it was something else that needs to be fixed. I fixed it myself after watching all your videos. It's been running great for two years now, and 20k additional miles.
Nice diagnosis. I did have a Phaser gernade. When it backfired, it blew the bottom off the intake. Didn't go any further. Owner said put a reman in it.
Proof that diagnostic skills matter. Had a suburban come in that another shop tried to repair for lean code on both banks and both sensor 1 o2 sensors. Smoked it and both runners of intake from front to back were leaking the worst I have ever seen .

I think people need to respect the craft of true mechanics vs part swappers who can only read codes. Both are needed but a true mechanic can actually uncover issues like we see in this video that take true understanding of how vehicles work to uncover.
Damn what I wouldn't give to have you near oklahoma! I love my old 2006 f150. Am dreading the day I begin to have trouble with my phasers. Thank you for all the info!
I got a 06 5.4 3v too. Intermittent ruff idle 156k miles. No codes read on obd. This may be my issue. I’m getting that scanner. And ordering oem timing kit and melling pump. Great videos
I have a 2003 E350 with a 2 valve 5.4. The original engine went to 575,000 miles, only replaced coilpacks and intake and once and plugs every 100k. Replaced it with a Motorcraft reman, which is still going with 874,000 miles on the van I absolutely love Fords, using Motorcraft parts and fluids as much as I can.
I've seen the timing chain skip on a V6 twin turbo but not the 5.4 nice job carry on my man it's nice to see someone that checks all the options first good for you thanks
Unfortunately that is a fact my friend. I’ve been at the same shop for over 10 years now and you would be amazed at how many other shops in the area just launch parts at a car and then give up and send it to our shop. And I’m by no means saying I’m a master diagnostic expert however I do know how to use logic and reason while searching for a problem and I’m certainly not just going to wing parts at a car. Our shop has quite a few used car lots that come to us as well because they buy cars from auction and then them fixed before selling them and a lot of other shops in the area see a used car lot and they won’t even bother diagnosing the car and they’ll just throw parts at their cars and it ends up costing the car lots tons of wasted money so they’ve now realized how much money they can save on wasted parts by bringing it to us and having it fixed right the first time lol.
I have an 05 F150 5.4 3v. Bought it in 2013, with only 91000 miles on it. It had a slight miss at idle. Ran great above idle. Replaced All the timing system. Put a cam phaser lockout kit on it and reprogrammed the computer to bypass the vct. Runs great other than the slight miss at idle.
When u do the timing jobs, do u do it non stop, or do u tear apart one day and put together the next? U do so many, u must have a total system. I love the channel and never miss a vid. Thank u for your hard work!!!
My Launch scan tool has the IDS style power balance screen, it is awesome and gets used often! Just had one last week, customer only checks his oil when the oil light comes on, lol.
I have a 2017 3.5l EcoBoost with the stupid cold start rattle. Obviously the phasers. Also a roughish idle. I changed the plugs, and cleaned the iAT sensors and TB. No change. I suspect the phasers are causing it. Will look at the data with the forscan after watching this video. Thanks for the video!
If it does it only on the first start of the day then it is the phasers. Super common in 3.5's. You should be able to get it done under warranty at a dealership.
He's the reason why I switched oils still motorcraft with a motorcraft filter 820 s truck still runs good no more ticking I replaced both exhaust manifolds
Seems like there would be a good market for parts and mods that simplify and make these engines more reliable by replacing the complex and problematic issues it has.
It’s not a very complex setup compared to some more modern VVT/VCT systems. There are phaser lockout kits, but that doesn’t fix the chains and guides. These 3V modulars are some of my favorite engines to do timing jobs on, since you can do it in the car. I just did head gaskets on a Toyota 2GR-FE due to coolant leaking into the front bank of cylinders, and did timing chains while I was there since the tensioners were bleeding down overnight, and the exhaust cam sprockets were starting to come apart, causing that nice cold start rattle. You basically have to take the engine down to the short block to do the chains, since the oil pump is built into the timing cover, and that can’t be removed without pulling the upper pan. All in all, the job billed 28 hours, and I needed all of it!
Great job Brian, it's good you know the 5.4 3V, the information, & data is there, but in some shops either don't have the right scan tools, don't know how to use them, they turn to throwing wrong parts at them.
Brian, these 5.4 3V are a pain! Being a aircraft mechanic I cannot see how Ford let this out of R&D or testing for production. I've owned 3 and had numerous problems especially with Phaser replacement (all 3), plugs breaking, etc...I won't own a 4th...Or a Ford for that matter, Transmission went a week ago on the F150.
Thank you i had narrowed down my issue to this already but you explained it in such simple yet detailed terms. I just need a fair quote estimate now there are shops quoting me around 14+ hours and $4,000 for this timing component replacement job. Does that sound right? The 2005 truck is only worth about 6k right now and they ALL do this around 190,000 miles!
He earns more if you watch the commercials and Like the videos. Best thing to do is let the opening commercial run to the end while browsing the comments, then watch the video. Takes a minute longer but UA-cam pays Brian more if people watch the videos, etc. So you can "say thanks and give back" that way and it's painless - you're gonna watch the whole video anyway.
SUMMARY: Some mechanics are not really very good ones...more like scatter shot parts and labor grifters...like clocks, right twice a day. Nice work FTM!
Great job. I get nervous thinking I might have to deal with one of those other mechanics that throw parts at a truck to see if they can fix it. Why are they even in business? To do brakes and shocks? Because it takes a tech like you to truly know how to fix engines. Thanks
I wish he was in NC. Several years ago I was having severe power issues with my 06 f150. After having several shops look at it and getting nowhere, I took it to the dealership. They started with the timing system and then said a complete rebuild was needed $7000. Although it ran better, I knew it still wasn't right. At that point they pretty much blew me off. Recently I had a stuck injector and the guy who had it pulled out 3 different types of spark plugs!!! There are other things that made me question the rebuild as well, but I am certain that they probably replaced the timing issues and that was it
@@w900kw2 I just hate being lied to and taken advantage of. I spent over $7000. I probably should have just been done with the 5.4 and bought a coyote motor. At the very least, I should have taken my truck to a mechanic to verify the work that the dealership told me they did. I really didn't think that a dealership would do this to a customer. Live and learn.
I have an 06 5.4 3 valve with 111,000 miles. I've replaced a cracked manifold and had an injector stick on it. If mine ever blows I have found a site that sells completely rebuilt engines for $3k. They have the high volume oil pump and all other upgrades with a 3 year 36k warranty.
You just know your stuff, awesome videos, thanks man,I wished I was close enough to your shop to have my 05 5.4 3v . I'm not sure who to trust here, there are so many crooks, and the rest just don't have the knowledge that you obviously have!
The spark plugs issues we on pre 99 5.4 engines. Second time a plug blew out my buddy put a 99 5.4 in it for me. Not only did that fix the plug issue, it's got 30 more horsepower and a ton of low end touque! Got a three valve truck now, and yes, had the phazers locked out before that was an issue. Got 253000 on it now and I tow a 5400lb camper with it. And yes, it will cut across 6 lanes of traffic to get to a gas pump, but towing does little to effect fuel consumption!
I could sure use your expertise out here in the Philadelphia suburb area. My 2010 5.4 lariat once I step on in slightly with pressure the truck starts to shake until I let off the pedal a little.
You really hate the 5.4 Triton. We clearly see this. No worries cause I’m right there with you. Can’t wait to get rid of my Expedition in the next couple of months.
Took my F150 to the dealership to replace a leaking radiator, replacement radiator started leaking three months later, I had to paid for all repairs, as they handed me the keys I told the repair manager "if this happens again I'm buying a Chevy" , I've been very happy with my Chevy Colorado for the last 10 years,
We are doing a timing job on a 2007 Lincoln Navigator at this very moment. This vehicle has 450,000 miles. Hard to believe but oil changes every 3000 miles is the key. And by the way this is the 5.4 liter 3 valve motor. I sure no one believes it but it is true.
I have a 2005 F150 5.4 3 valve and all original timing components WITH 334,000 miles. Just change your fully synthetic oil every 5,000 to 6,000 miles. I have a misfire every once in a great while, and this year I see my engine light go on, and the indicator light now blinks. Testing it at Auto Zone proves a misfire, but doesn't say what cylinder is at fault. Is there a testing devise that I can go to test what specific cylinder is acting up? Don't want to end up at the dealership for an expensive diagnosis. Thanks for the video. THUMBS UP!!!
Only time I've had an intake issue with a three valve was with an '04 with 276k miles. Brake master cylinder was dumping fluid into the booster and the customer just kept topping it off until it eventually started sucking the fluid into the intake. All it did was ruin the gaskets at the heads. New Booster and Master cylinder, resealed the intake. And two weeks later the timing set and cats gave up (clogged bank 2 converter and bank 2 stationary guide broke).
Ford dealer told me the Same thing on my 07 F150, standard 5.3 liter. The issue was that it would die now and then but would start right back up. I left without the repair and as soon as I got home it died as I entered the driveway. I raised the hood and the first thing I saw was the cap was missing for the fuel pressure test point. I pressed on the Schrader valve and there was no pressure. I turned the ignition on and still no pressure. I spent the next 3 hours lifting the bed and changing the fuel pump. Never had another problem with it.
I've thus far avoided owning a vehicle with variable valve timing. Since I've ALWAYS done ALL my repairs (except a TH400 rebuild back in '82 on the G/A : )... and it's getting tougher at my age... I just don't see the additional complexity and potential headaches being counterbalanced by any supposed benefits. My '02 Focus (owned 19 years), '65 Ford 250 (owned 24 years) and '74 Grand Am (owned 44 years) have always done JUST FINE without : )
I own one vehicle with it, a 2014 Mustang GT, but it only has 33,000 miles on it so hopefully I won't see any issues for a very long time. Everything else I own is from the 70's or 90's. 98 Chevy Z71 bought new, 98 K3500 owned for almost 14 years, 1992 Chevy Cavalier owned for 15 years, and my 70 Monte Carlo owned for 34 years.

I agree. Let me know if you find a good shop that can do this in Oklahoma. I need mine done as well.
Difference between a Tech and a Tech with a good mechanical knowledge !
Troubleshooting and finding the root cause is a list art! Thanks for your sharing knowledge!! 👍🏼👍🏼
I just want to uproot and move close to Brian so my truck will be in the best hands..
Who's with me??
Another great repair, Brian!
I'm totally bringing you my 2004 f150!
My Ford 5.4 3 valve has 286,000 miles on it and still running strong thank God.
I've seen the timing chain skip on a V6 twin turbo but not the 5.4 nice job carry on my man it's nice to see someone that checks all the options first good for you thanks
The main reason I like to do my own work because most shops are just parts changers.
So what’s the answer to get the miss to go away at idle
When u do the timing jobs, do u do it non stop, or do u tear apart one day and put together the next? U do so many, u must have a total system. I love the channel and never miss a vid. Thank u for your hard work!!!
Timing sets on the 5.4, 3.5 turbo, and 3.5 naturally aspirated engines can all be done in a day usually 7-8 hours.
I finish them in one day and Q.C. the next morning.
Always great understandable information i always catch your video we have a fleet of fords that we take care of your information always spot on
My Launch scan tool has the IDS style power balance screen, it is awesome and gets used often!
Buy a Chevy
Great job Brian, it's good you know the 5.4 3V, the information, & data is there, but in some shops either don't
have the right scan tools, don't know how to use them, they turn to throwing wrong parts at them.
You are a smart cookie . Feel bad for the guy that took it to a parts changer .
you own the 5.4 3valves. great video
Runs smooth for that amount of mileage! Great job
Awesome video sir. You are the 5.4 magician.
Man these 5.4 seem like such a good engine to learn stuff on. Can't wait to dig into mine
The answer is yes on that but the answer should be no. I bought someone that first car it's a 5.4 2v.
Great job as always Brian! You’re the best at keeping it simple and comprehensible for us knuckleheads!
Thank you i had narrowed down my issue to this already but you explained it in such simple yet detailed terms. I just need a fair quote estimate now there are shops quoting me around 14+ hours and $4,000 for this timing component replacement job. Does that sound right? The 2005 truck is only worth about 6k right now and they ALL do this around 190,000 miles!
content so good its shocking we get it for free
He earns more if you watch the commercials and Like the videos. Best thing to do is let the opening commercial run to the end while browsing the comments, then watch the video. Takes a minute longer but UA-cam pays Brian more if people watch the videos, etc. So you can "say thanks and give back" that way and it's painless - you're gonna watch the whole video anyway.
In God we trust, all others bring data. Nice, logical, well explained approach. Thx Brian!
Man you are the best! Thanks for all the videos
SUMMARY: Some mechanics are not really very good ones...more like scatter shot parts and labor grifters...like clocks, right twice a day. Nice work FTM!
This guy knows his fords.
Great job. I get nervous thinking I might have to deal with one of those other mechanics that throw parts at a truck to see if they can fix it. Why are they even in business? To do brakes and shocks? Because it takes a tech like you to truly know how to fix engines. Thanks
Awesome diag Brian as always! Thanks for posting!
There are other things that made me question the rebuild as well, but I am certain that they probably replaced the timing issues and that was it
I need him in NC aswell. Seems like some shops are clueless
@@johnpyle8027 I think that oil pump is essential for longevity.
@@johnpyle8027 was it the intake or exhaust? The exhaust manifold is common on this engine.
You just know your stuff, awesome videos, thanks man,I wished I was close enough to your shop to have my 05 5.4 3v . I'm not sure who to trust here, there are so many crooks, and the rest just don't have the knowledge that you obviously have!
The best way I've found is to get experience and Do it yourself🤷♂️
I have been following you for years now and like to thank you for all you have taught me alot. Is there a way I can communicate directly.
Nice work Brian! Great learning experience.
You really hate the 5.4 Triton. We clearly see this. No worries cause I’m right there with you. Can’t wait to get rid of my Expedition in the next couple of months.
You are a true Professional !!!
Took my F150 to the dealership to replace a leaking radiator, replacement radiator started leaking three months later, I had to paid for all repairs, as they handed me the keys I told the repair manager "if this happens again I'm buying a Chevy" , I've been very happy with my Chevy Colorado for the last 10 years,
Those bolsters are intact and the leather looks to be taken care of. That truck seems minty. It looks amazing
Don’t slide in and out and watch your weight. This truck is proof a seat can survive decades and still look like new.
Hi Brian I know it’s another great video have a blessed weekend bro…
Another insightful video, thanks for all you do for these 5.4s!
My friend you are the best keep up the good work thank you thank you thank you
Tech to tech I love your videos.
You re amazing mechanic Bro
Thank you for all the info you share.
Never had another problem with it.
just an insanely good mechanic
Good job grasshopper you did right
That engine compartment is amazing for a road trip away from 200k
Ford Dealerships should make their techs subscribe to your channel.
Always like the intro, Game of thrones-sounding!
