For ones that request money, it should be. I'm pretty sure conning money from others is considered a crime. For one's that don't, unfortunately it's not a crime.

The amount of people catfishing or being a scamartist and voluntarily letting themselves get exposed full face on national television, should be comparable with the amount of people that would voluntarily tell their deep dark secrets in front of a big crowd (this actually being even less damaging to their reputation) Honestly, it would already be impressive if you'd find a few, let alone this many to fill a show with this many episodes. And isnt it suspicious that the positions, camera and microphone quality of all the catfishes are always just as professional as the other people in the show. Ever been in a zoom meeting or class? There are just too little glitchy backlight pixel forehead or doublechin angles to be even remotely realistic 🤣. But it is entertaining and it's a good educational warning still ofc. So i don't mind it being fake
