Everyone is saying the interviewers were "rude" & "disrespectful". But I found this interview fascinating. The executives were spoken to like completely normal people. They were asked the real questions. Some hard hitting. There was no "oh you're famous & have money" filter. I enjoyed this very much.
exactly all you people who think this was harsh google jeremy paxman
Gabe Martinez An interview can be fascinating and still have rude people in them. I didn't find the interviewers rude or disrespectful but they were slightly antagonistic perhaps..
The tension in that room is beyond uncomfortable. Everyone looks like they hate each other. Great interview, even though the reporters were on the offensive.
lol, statistically speaking thats a room full of sociopaths
PeterZeeke lol. True. I can't argue with that.
ReelChaseLee Really? They all seemed to support each other, like Kevin congratulating Alan on the success of Marvel.
Lin Yang so innocent
PeterZeeke lol but they all said there's no bad blood. The interviewer asked them whether the perception of them constantly being at war and trying to one-up each other is true, and they ALL denied it. Alan said Marvel doesn't try to one-up DC, and Kevin said the same. They all agreed with each other, agreed with the business, agreed with the audience behaviour, planning ahead, film franchises, being careful, creating amazing films, knowing their strengths etc
I didn't hear one disagreement and the only awkward encounter was with the interviewer when she said Disney has the largest franchise. That definitely pissed them off or hurt their feelings, but that was it.
I appreciate the journalists asking the questions they did and holding the executives accountable when they gave their delusional answers and tried to spin everything so they looked like geniuses, instead of realizing they are seriously out of touch with movie goers and the entertainment industry in general.
No wonder most of the great storytelling and original content is on tv right now. When the studios are busy spending billions to make their 429th predictable, plot-less super hero movie.
your correct no one wants to se an other fast an furious movie. are they for real?
You all are so pessimistic about the future of the business. The film business is like water. It will mold and shape itself to whatever design it needs to be; whatever container it's trying to fill. The second Super hero movies start to drop off, they'll find something else that works. It's idiotic to think people will completely stop going to the cinema. Will less money be spent on films in the future? Yes. Will tent pole films run their course at some point? Yes, but there's always another avenue to take. It will never die off entirely.
I think comic book movies get a bad wrap. Comic book adaptations offer the same complexity as a novel adaptation with a more diverse cast. Most people would agree that The Dark Night is an excellent movie, yet pretend like it was wasn't adapted from The Dark Night Returns graphic novels. They also offer more opportunities for actors/actresses. For example, Marvel, DC and Fox have more female and minority casting than most studios.
ShelbyBaby27 Yes, but the Dark Knight is the exception and not the norm. I don't think comic book movies get a bad wrap because most of them are not exceptional in any sense other than the amount of revenue they generate.
I also disagree with the idea that they offer more opportunities for actresses. We haven't had any other female led comic book movies besides Catwoman and Elektra and they were both pretty bad. The roles for women in most of these films is just to serve as the love interest for the male hero. Black Widow is the one exception. Captain Marvel and Wonder Woman are on the horizons, but (and I say this as a huge fan) I am not encouraged by what I am hearing about the WW film so far. I can't really place too much blame on the producers because DC doesn't even know how to properly handle their own character.
fong03 X-Men alone has more females in their movies than most major blockbusters. Starting with 1998 X-Men movie, characters have been: Storm, Pepper Potts, Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Jean Grey, Kitty Pride, Black Widow, Mystique, Emma Frost, Elektra, Rachel Dawes, Gwen Stacy, Sif, Silk Spectre, etc. The comic book genre makes studios have to seek out actresses for these roles and the audience is vocal when a role is one of those damsel in distress roles.
It was funny how Kim called out Kevin on WB's lame announcement of their DC slate compared to the way Marvel presented theirs. I applaud her on her honesty, she really speaks from a film lovers perspective.
I would have to disagree.
coming from someone with the username ULTIMATESPIDEYFAN, not a biased marvel fanboy opinion or anything...
dc has as many superheroes as marvel even a few more popular ones.
roloug95 I do like DC and Marvel, spider-man's just my favorite character. Don't let my username prevent you from seeing the truth. What's the last successful DC movie you saw that wasn't batman or superman related? Don't worry I'll wait....
ULTIMATESPIDEYFAN I agree especially now.
Fucking love Kevin Tsujihara. His dedication to dc has been fantastic
+Desert bats Nice to see a recognizable user from the various movie shows. Anyways I hope THR can get the same executives this year because these are the cream of the crop and the stakes are even higher with Star Wars coming out, the DC Universe getting ready to kick off along with Marvel phase 3.
David DeVIlla Oh, I'd LOVE to see another one of these with the competition expected to be at an unimaginable level in the upcoming years. None of these people dislike each other, and its always cool to get an inside look. Do they do these every year? I've only caught this one.
Desert bats Yeah they do these every year but this was first time that the top dogs from every major studio were able to do the round table and I'm looking forward to this years because it comes straight from the source
This didn't age well🥲🥲🥲🥲
I like the more aggressive interviewing style. It indicates that that this isn't just an extended photo-op for the execs. They have a unique viewpoint, and it's best to explore that thoroughly and honestly, not with softball questions.
Also, they're executives. They're not delicate.
The interviewers kind of attacked them
calaftheeast thr usually make people comfortable so they open up;,there are so many other ways to question them it should have been in a howard stern way
***** why i said attack was the way the studio heads reacted to each question the older reporter seemed like she wouldn't be happy until they admitted to doing something wrong, it just seems like there was a better way of going at it
The Hollywood Reporter Please ask them better questions.
For example:
- When will native 4K content be provided both TV and BluRays?
- Why do they employ crappy writers when the original authors are still alive? Gone Girl proves original writers are usually the best. Marvel is so successful because the comic writers are involved in the process for example.
- What is the selection process of finding new talented writers and rewarding the successful ones?
- Why do executives only give royalties to big actors like Robert Downy or big directors, but not the writers like Stan Lee?
- How do the studios reinvest in the education of current film makers and writers? (Doctors are required to keep up to date, but not filmmakers)
- How do they reinvest in student and rising film makers and writers?
These moderators aren't smart enough to ask questions. The guy from a few years back was better.
- How did you get to be studio heads and can I have a job please?
Stan Lee is a lot richer than RDJ.
Wow Alan Horn and Kevin Tsujihara in the same table.
Needless to say there respective studios Disney and Warner Brothers will be going head to head for some time with there respective movie franchises Marvel,DC and Star Wars just to name a few.
I prefer other three usual moderators they have. attacking won't get you anywhere in roundtable convo...
Who's the other 3 ?
I came here to learn and the interviewers wouldnt stop interrupting them...
Studio heads compared to tv studio execs are more calm and less combative towards each other. It’s like they are more secure within themselves rather than trying to outdo each other because their record will speak for themselves and they appreciate the work they all do.
Am I the only one surprised by this roundtable? Other roundtables focus on how projects are picked, you one deals with rejection, etc. This feels gossipy. The interviewers sound like they're on the defensive, trying to put studios against each other. Lacks professionalism.
Kim Masters is very rude and antagonistic here.
These cunts deserved it
Tve
jed52 I think it's more the way she said it. But I don't think it was with a rude intent. It's her job to ask the tough questions, but she could have asked it more softly. There were a few times where she could have phrased it better, for example when she said Alan had the biggest franchise, that definitely hurt all of the film studio execs.
jed52 couldn't agree more. and it's not because I care if they get tough questions. she kept asking about a possible lawsuit, you really think he is going to give a candid answer in this rinky dink interview? No, so it's boring. Ask him something he can actually answer.
She's a cunt. She knows how to ask half-decent questions in a way that creates an uncomfortable atmosphere and makes her seem really rude.
Did he just say Thor is a Shakespearean literature?
The connection was made for the first one for a number of reasons: family battle with two brothers fighting for a throne... It eas mentioned by Kenneth Branagh himself, who directed the movie.
teaber Also Kenneth is well known to direct, act and write Shakespearean works.
+jacob harris Hamlet was a long ass movie, but a great one.
The interviewers were so antagonizing. Just let the studio execs speak and don't try to pit them against each other. They are trying to be civil and talk about their business and where the industry is going.
god I love Kevin Tsujihara
he made the DCEU happen and you feel a passionate, smart but also respectful man watching him
go WB, go Kevin
batboy 1989 Lmao he's the reason why Justice League failed. He wants that $$$ quickly as possible
Oof
when kevin mentioned american sniper I laughed out loud
So much business power on one table, the flow is great
Absolutely fascinating discussion, thanks for it.
love these roundtables
36:45 He says CHARACTER DRIVEN as if it were a byword. Unique story plot movies is what we need NOW! Great movie's died in the 90's. 🦋
Wow. I feel bad for these guys having to put up with these two.
The questions for the director/writer and actor roundtables are so thoughtful and intelligent, however, the questions here seemed incredibly rude and uncomfortable.
Damn, was hoping Sony would be there
That was a great point made about movie studios having to look at the box-office results globally, not just primarily on the domestic. And Disney/Marvel was absolutely trying to 1-up Warner Brothers, with their random Marvel movie slate celebration. But Tsujihara is freakin' awesome!
I really dont think they were. If anything DC caught wind of what Marvel were gonna do and tried to beat them to the punch. If you look at the slate of Marvel movies there is a narrative throughpoint to the order of the films wheres (and addmitenetly this could be because we havent seen the movies yet) DC's slate is alot more random
PeterZeeke I think that Marvel Studios definitely has everything planned out. Which isn't surprising, considering that they are the first comic book movie studio, EVER! What the hell else does Kevin Feige and the rest of those executives have to do, other than focus entirely on their Marvel Cinematic Universe?! It's taken Warner Brothers a little more time to organize their DC superhero movies. Tsujihara didn't get promoted until 2013. But before Man of Steel was released, they've been preparing. And I think that they're ready to kick some Marvel ass! Stay tuned.
I think that everything that has happened post MoS proves DC didnt have a clue on how to use their brands and if they did they abandoned it due to the success of Marvel, even now the coherence of their universe is questionable. I'm not saying it wont work out it may be great, it just doesnt look good yet, there is nothing to prove that they can do this, I hope they do tho
PeterZeeke What EXACTLY happened post MoS, that proves that Warner Brothers doesn't have a clue on how to use their brands? No opinions, give me facts. LOL
And the success of Marvel's Cinematic Universe, will only help motivate Warner Bros. to do everything they can, to make quality comic book movies. Like I don't know, making a Suicide Squad movie, a highly anticipated movie. LOL
look I dont want to get into a fanboy war, I like both dc and marvel, I'm just saying what i can see. DC released MoS to very mixed reviews and leaving everything with very little momentum, to the point the chnaged their plans, pulled the MoS sequel, came up with BvS, anounced it at comicon when they really had nothing, proved by the fact they put this movie back too. Look I am looking forward to Suicide Squad AND Aquaman, but as of this moment, DC cant claim to anything other than blind faith. I really hope it works out for them though
We need to applaud Kim Masters & Pamela McClintock for fighting for STRONG CHARACTER BASED STORIES. We're inundated with super hero movies. 🦋
I love how they call them out on their BS lol.
Jim Gianopulos is the smartest guy in the room.
RIP Brad Grey
Do the studio executives even consider critical success or audience reactions? They same to correlate 'great movies' solely with commercial success
The interviewers were so disrespectful towards these accomplished individuals. The interviewers come off as incompetent.
I too have noticed the aggressive tone towards the producers. The actors, on the other hand, were almost venerated as demigods on their Roundtable.
she think she knows her stuff but actually is just reading questions like a pleb, don't give up your day job there love
these guys are captains of industry, you pussyfoot around them and they will steamroll you
Selena Jetlee I totally respect her attitude. These individuals are ruining the business with the franchise model.
Selena Jetlee I totally respect her attitude. These individuals are ruining the business with the franchise model.
Could some one just explain to me what they mean in reference to "windows". Thanks
They are referring to the amount of time between a movie opening in theaters, and the movie being released on other platforms (physical DVD, iTunes, etc.) So they were discussing whether or not it would be beneficial to release dvd's and stuff like that sooner. Hope that makes sense. :)
AWKWARD.
dont get some comments here
very friendly and calm talk, specially given the topics
A study done by entertainment-securities attorney, John W. Cones, finds that 70 - 80 percent of the top three executives in the MPAA studio/distributors are "politically liberal, not very religious Jewish males of European heritage." Given this, why is there such little diversity in the executive ranks when many are calling for more diversity in Hollywood? Could discrimination (cronyism, nepotism and favoritism) in the executive suites be the cause of the lack of diversity at the talent, crew and conglomerate levels? Does a narrowly defined "control group" of executives only green-light movies that appeal to their interests, values, cultural perspectives and prejudices? Is this why Hollywood studios and New York networks are promoting a liberal agenda and suppressing conservatives? Is this why Hollywood is promoting European style- socialism and anti-Christian values? Is this why Hollywood is promoting the Globalist Agenda Trump is working to roll back? MAINSTREAM -- a 4-part mini series NOT "coming to a theater near you" addresses the lack of diversity in Hollywood and its repercussions on a democratic society. It's always strange to see the monsters in person.
Although I AM a superhero fan...There is a DEFINITE over kill with superhero movies just now, time for a new genre phase in Hollywood
it'll be games next. I dont think this is a good thing
I wish they'd asked Jonathan more
alan horn is almost sleeping! his eyes keep closing and are lucid! XD
i think the paramount guy is the smartest. the warner bros guy is smart but somewhat cocky. the disney guy is just chill and laid back.
of course the disney guy is chilled he's holding 3 of the aces
Oh my God these people are so competitive, constantly banding around numbers "my movie made like 1.2 Billion this summer"
46:37 explains all...
Kim Masters is horrible, very rude.
She gets to interview the execs again Who else would U want to interview them ?
Someone with manners. All kidding aside anybody else would be fine, she just attacked the execs instead of interviewing them
Agree, she seemed very rude, and overly negative.
Joshua Nathan Strong
True, Kim was pushy, aggressive to the execs like the British editor that does these roundtable interviews.
These interviewers were terrible and rude.
Damn, this was pretty heated
part of me is like "wow the interviewers were pretty terse" but the other half of me is like "but the exec's kind of deserve it for the state at which Hollywood is in"
if they didn't attack, it would have been an ass kissing marathon which it kinda started as anyway with all that 'i love your movies! - no, i love your movies! - we all love everyone's movies!!'..... please.
Hahaha she went in on warner bros. box office! damnnn #awkward
I see their main challenge is their rigid/anal perspective and approach to the art of story telling which is what movies do/are (delusional or not).
mediocre interviewers... let the people answer before your follow on questions... you have a whole hour.
imagine Jack Warner Samuel Goldwyn and Louis B. Mayer here it would never happened!!lol
Crazy how many billions of dollars is at that table
god damn alan horn must be swimming on money disney has star wars, pixar and marvel studios lol
Do all these men buy their jackets at the same store?
Film is the medium with which these executives generate revenue for their company's not the vehicle with which they can satisfy the consumers appetite for artistic immersion.
Some of the comments are so foolish and petulant it's truly unreal!!!
Marketing budgets of movie from producers and theatres have to form a synergy as how to bring audience in theatres, since both are suffering, cost of empty theatres with all those empty days and producers heart burn of having spend so much monies, and answerable to that responsibility ,there are ways.... that consultations will cost a fee, there is no harm in trying methods which doesn't cost that much.
Kevin Tsujihara was the guy who appointed Snyder. Hope you get fired soon Kevin
Actually I believe it was Christopher Nolan that groomed Snyder and lobbied for him...
Lisa M He's a greedy boss
@Lisa M
agreed
I think Aronofsky wanted to make Noha look ridiculously stupid he succeeded in that
I'm surprised these guys do this interview. These hosts are badgering and uncomfortably aggressive...
This interviewers go after Noah, and let Transformers 4, one of the worst films of the year without any sort of question? What does that say about journalism?
I sense the interviewers already had an opinion going in. They wouldn't let the studio head complete their response before chiming in. You notice they never gave the head of IFC any gripe. He's had some movies that've tanked too.
You're right. Their partiality bothers me so much. THR has the worst hosts in this roundtables.
She's so rude! She's not even low about it!
ONE woman in an executive seat?
why i feel like, i want to slap kim masters..rude AF!!!
Why does that lady think she knows more than these guys?
this is actually a silly roundtable because they don't control what we see anymore there main jobs now is distribution. people like DreamWorks New Line Cinema make the movies. Spielberg hated the studios when they ran who and what is in the movies.
man I wanna to what Kevin Feige is going to say. They should have invited him.
well it wouldn't have made sense since Marvel Studios is a Disney company and Alan Horn is already there, but I agree, I think Feige is a amazing doing what he does and would love to hear him talk, although what he has to deal with is in a smaller scale than the people sitting here
ohh its scary to hear the guy speaking about the pandering to China on Transformers becoming the norm. We really do not need that, good Lord please NO
Interstellar wasn't "too long".
These people must be so rich, holy shit. probably pulling in millions a year, easy
These guys would not be heads of whole studios if they could be goaded into revealing confidential business information with snarky questions. They basically copy each other's answers and revise them like plagiarized term papers while giving away nothing of substance and even their defensive statements are based on feigned ignorance. Masters was completely overreaching at trying to play "gotcha" with people who answer to Barry Diller, Rupert Murdoch, Perlmutter, and Brian Roberts on a regular basis.
These are not timid people who can be cowed by a trade newspaper editor.
Agreed. Still fun to watch though
The interviewer was rude af
The Film Studio Heads need to be more open to character based movies, people still like them. Reduce cussing and sexual scenes & focus on STORY, it'll pick up a broader audience of church goers. 🦋‼
all they do to the journalist question r just general answer really boring
This is the most uncomfortable roundtable I have ever seen. I'm game for reporters asking hard questions, but please, let them finish talking and look at them when they do. Kim spent half the interview looking at her notes and making faces to the other reporter, that's just impolite.
The only interview I've seen that was more contentious, was a roundtable of "documentarians". At least these business people are articulate, the documentary filmakers were not only inarticulate but also contentious with the interviewers and each other.
three words: lower ticket prices
They always attack the studio executives, it's kinda dumb but I guess that's the only press they'll have from them.
see how marvel & dc executives are so civilised even complimentary?? then why are the fucking fanboys trying to pin the two companies against each other?
+Jeffrey Mboya Well that wouldn't be any fun :)
A lot have happen since this video, brad is dead, Jim got his job at paramount, Fox is being sold to Disney n Warner bros is now a property of at&t.
and Kevin Tsujihara was being blackmailed by actress Charlotte Kirk who slept with him for movie roles. Quite alot happened
Where are the good story film and why is everything geared to youth? I'm sick of violence and super heroes.
Godawful interviewers
The interviewers are meh and most of these executives are suits. It all felt repetitive as if they are talking at a press junket.
"I think Interstellar's a masterpiece." ooh. wow. no.
Horrible interviewers!
Please never have these interviewers again until they can have some respect of works.
The interviewers definitely have their opinions on some of these guys... yikes
billions of dollars sitting on that table... capitalism, you are my innocent love ;D
P.S. that "Noah" movie was absolutely, unequivocally...HORRIBLE!!!
why there is an asian?
Nobody tends to like studio executives very much ! Directors, producers, actors and apparently even journalists. It's not a comfortable job I imagine
Bench of nerdy journalist thinkin that they know more that these people...
The second woman's voice is so annoying.
Jason Redol
same with Joe Hanson from his bragging videos on here.
Seriously makes me sick. YUCK.
these guys are talking about franchise movies, calling them great movies. The Fast and the Furious? The only reason they make these awful films is money. They are bad films.
Fast and furious was a rare case of turning "bad film series" into "good franchises", there is something to be said. Still.
These interviewers remain horrible.......
