  • The Art Channel walks through an exhibition at Tate Britain showing 60 years of art by David Hockney. From his earliest experiments in painting, Hockney develops a naturalism that explores the experience of looking at the world. This first film analyses six key paintings from the first half of his career including A Bigger Splash and Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy. Ever curious and observant, Hockney is constantly testing the possibility of art to represent and understand friends, places, objects and architecture. Because the show was so large, we've divided the film into two parts, looking closely at several key works to understand Hockney's legacy and achievement.

Many of his paintings is very appealing to me. I can sense a honest emoting through the work of his brushwork.

...just to add the Ozzy, Celia painting was made in 1971, not the sixties as you described.. I liked what you said about the comfort and unease.present. Great painting as are all those double figure portraits which are for me the high point of his career

Yes, the double portraits seemed to be one of the most successful aspects of his career. We always try to be factually accurate by researching each exhibition we film. Occasionally under the pressure of limited time, we might make a small error. In this case you are right, although we were saying how the painting embodies the spirit of the 1960s (even though it was finished at the very start of the 1970s). Thanks for the support and do please keep watching and contributing.

The same show is moving to Paris and New York. We partly make these films as a record especially for anyone who's interested but can't actually visit. Thanks for the support.

How is Hockney's signature in his works?
In Louisiana I found a beautiful work of art with the signature of David H. When I put it on Facebook, someone told me that the work belonged to David Hockney and I do not know who to contact to see the work I have

Very enjoyable but Hockney wasn't 'having fun' with the spelling in the Tea painting - he admitted in an interview: 'I am a bad speller, but to spell a three-letter word wrong!! But it's drawn in perspective and it was quite difficult to do. I took so long planning it that in my concern for flatness or abstraction I spelt it wrong.' Nikos Stangos (ed.), David Hockney by David Hockney, London 1976, p 64)

Infidelity amid graceful ease. "Cats" will roam.
