As a Mass teacher, i know that Boston educational uniqueness comes from the colleges everywhere. The Boston school district, has their own union, are highly paid, and have student teachers. Also, the Boston Ballet, Museum of arts, all that, they go right into the schools to teach the students. In my opinion, the nonprofit agencies are coming through for these kids, whose grandparents endured hell during the bussing era. Also, the MIT museum is an absolute must, for everyone.
You’re right , when you get to know the people in Boston , they’re actually really nice , one time I was lost on my way to Fenway Park and there was this dude that took me all the way to the ballpark by subway , of course he was there too lol

I've lived in Boston for over 10 years now, and it's probably the least favorite city I've lived in. The winters are long (no one really likes winter here, everyone loves the fall), the summers are short, it's super expensive, and the people are unfriendly. A lot of people who live in Boston are not native to the area. Most of the friendly people I've encountered grew up in different states. It's challenging to make friends and many people here are status conscious and borderline rude. It's a really beautiful city though, with lots of great parks, low crime, and opportunity for jobs.
@@ScottA2345 It happens when you have a good job and a partner who doesn't want to move out of the area and family nearby. Sometimes people sacrifice living in a less than friendly city to remain close with loved ones.
My husband & I lived in Boston & worked at Mass General for 5 years - it was truly wonderful, but this was in the 1980's. We moved back to Australia & were the only two doctors where we worked who were experienced in treating gunshot victims! Would love to go back to have another look around.
I live about a half hour outside of Boston and I can tell you from experience it’s very expensive but it’s a sports town and you can enjoy yourself while you are there. Some parts are sketchy ofc but there’s a lot to do and the north end is really nice.

Went to Boston last month with my bf (from outside of Springfield lol) and I honestly was so impressed! It seems like a European city in the older parts, plus it also had sooooo much history 💕
Springfield and Lawrence are the 2 worst cities in Massachusetts. Boston has nothing on either. You're lucky you got outta the worst Springfield in America. Not the Simpsons Springfield I can guarantee that.
Yes, Boston is really nice and it’s bigger than expected. When people say everything is minutes away, that’s not really true, unless you are thinking only about Back Bay and Beacon Hill neighborhoods.
Historically, no city can beat Boston. I love being here. We are just reflecting how friendly they are. A reserved society. I was dating a gorgeous girl from North shore !!
@@williamberry4615 Well thanks. I literally live in Springfield and the way people talk about it you expect to be stabbed around the corner. Never had that problem. Every city has crime. It frequent if you consider the population but again, people see the statistics and it paint this image that if you came here you would see a shooting in front of your own eyes which is still unlikely. Never even heard a gunshot living here. I’ve lived in a couple different areas in the past decade. Indian Orchard, Metro Downtown, Liberty Heights, and Sixteen Acres. I didn’t grow up in Springfield either, so I’m not bias in that regards. I’ve lived outside of springfield most my life so far. Spent most of my childhood in Ludlow right outside Springfield but didn’t go to Springfield much. So I was skeptical of the city myself. I’ve also lived in Cape Cod for a bit. Living in Springfield isn’t a war zone. People a generally nice and friendly. I use to walk to my community college using public transport and again had no problems traveling through Forest Park and Downtown. And I was a young 18 year old white women. Not that, that should mean much but might give some people and idea about how comfortable I was to be alone. And sometimes it was dark by the time I caught the bus. Also again. Lived in the heart of downtown too and was again fine. No one bothered us. My mom would actually give some food to the homeless people if we had extra. Defiantly a lot homeless going on in the city. I won’t deny that a problem. Mostly lower class to lower middle class living here. My family also being in that lower middle class to almost lower class category depending on what your range is. I’m sure there are bad street you might not want to be on at night. But I feel every city got those. I’d say most of the violent crime is contained to people already involved in that crime. They’re are car break ins but everywhere has crime again so it not like no place is void of those. We’ve never had a car broken into and we’ve kept it in the driveway unlocked. Nothing stolen from our yard either. Again is not like the street or riddle with crime. I think Main Street has some rich history. Did some research projects on downtown. I think the main problem with springfield is just money. I would really love to see the city revived. Like I said, the city actually has a surprisingly rich history. I learned so much I didn’t know about the city like how many things come from Springfield. I feel thought a lot of the states money is centralized around Boston and I’m talking about any of the good infrastructure project. Which is why Western Mass and even Cape Cod are in decline. We have great things to offer but no attention is being brought to it. I’ve argued for the high speed rail between Boston and Springfield which would hopefully bring some of the wealth out East to the West. We have much cheaper housing over here compared to Boston. Like I think the median sales price is 230K. My families house we purchased for less than 200K and it’s a nice 3 bedroom colonial. Non of our past house were above 200K in fact. Not even the condo we had downtown which was HUGE. Cheaper actually then we we live in now. Like it was only 2 bedroom but the square footage was much bigger, closer to 2000 sqft were as our colonials only like 1000. Also someone like me who prefers public transport could stay here and easily work out in Boston. Would help both with Boston’s high prices and the economic issue out West. Springfield is just run down which just makes the city feel sad. Like there are just some really gorgeous historic building that are abandon that I would love to see brought back to life. I think it really would liven the city up. That includes downtowns gorgeous mid-rise building and there’s these beautiful Victorians neighborhoods scattered across the city. Huge Victorians actually. I think MGM was the mayor’s hopeless dream for saving the city but unless the rest of the city is shown some love and appreciation the casino isn’t going to last long and will be another abandon thing left downtown which is just a shame. So don’t go talking down Springfield based on the statistics posted on the media. It not no Boston. It no great city it just a small city. But there are people who care about the city. There are gorgeous areas and homes here. We are just plagued with a corrupt government and some really bad city planning that has limited the cities potential *cough* the placement of I-91 cutting off the city from the river, like who’s bright idea was it back in the day to put a highway right in front of the water views. -_- *cough* If we can improve the economy here, bring back some jobs, get the household income up, I think the homes here would really start to shine again. Like I could go on all day about how much I grown to love this little city for its potential to be great again. Honestly just having a quick look at the wiki page and you be surprised how much springfield was once an upcoming city and had so much going on here. That and my grandmothers memories of the city really help keep the image alive for. She remember a day when going downtown was an event to get dressed up for. Gosh if only city planners and government would have valued some of the cities older charm before demolishing is and paving over it. Bring back the cute trolly cars. 😢 I think if you came here and visited Main Street, the heart of downtown you just get the sense that the place is empty and quiet and run down but not necessarily scary like someone about to jump you.
I lived in North End and it was the best experience, at least in regards to food and ease of transportation. I seriously had the best dinner at Mamma Maria. I like it way more than New York City.
I have lived in Boston my whole life and this video does it justice. People not from Massachusetts do not understand our culture and this video shows everyone what Boston is about!
I’m from outside of Sacramento and lived in Dorchester for a year. The whole area was just completely different than from what I was used to. I felt like I was in a movie when I’d go into back bay or the north end. It’s definitely my favorite big American city. I saw a plethora of homeless on methadone mile. If the winters didn’t suck and not so expensive I’d live there permanently. Now I just own a home with my wife in the Sacramento suburbs instead lol.
Same here from Sacramento and lived in Boston during my College Years. Really loved Boston but hard to get used to the Winters especially as you get older. I also live in the Suburbs of Sacramento now, can't beat the weather.
@@meistsyans6526 Yes, Sacramento is quite affordable compared to the rest of the San Francisco Bay Area or Southern California, although Home prices have gone up a lot after the pandemic from all of the remote workers moving here from the SF Bay Area. The average price per SF in the Sacramento area is $350 while the average in Boston is now over $1,000.
Boston is a great city to visit and explore but so insanely expensive you can't live there. I loved taking the train to work and around downtown. Always clean and on time.
yes insanely expensive but so many cool areas/neighborhoods and all that history. If I could live in any city and money wasn't an object I would live in Boston for sure
There's no where "nice" to go if you don't have the money. Any actual nice city is still expensive! Burlington is really nice and you're not getting anything cheap.
I was raised in the Irish culture in Boston and its suburbs. I will sum Boston up in one word. Expensive. That's why I left as soon as I finished High School and I had to support myself.
@@rangeroverization you can buy a sprawling McMansion in most landlocked states for the price of a one bedroom condo in Boston. Hell, you can probably buy an entire town in many Southern states for the current Zillow price of the fairly modest Cambridge house my grandfather grew up in. Maybe the rest of the country is more expensive than it was a decade ago, but Boston is another world entirely, in a league only with Manhattan/Brooklyn and the Bay Area.
I love Boston. My aunt and uncle live there. It is a very walkable city. Such good transportation with the subways and buses. My aunt and uncle don’t own a car and don’t need me. if they want to go out of town they rent one. They rent one to go to New Hampshire and Vermont or Canada. So much history there. It’s definitely worth a visit. I will go again one day soon in a few years.
Great video as usual, Nick. 💓It’s definitely true that there are many things to do and it has interesting history. I worked in Boston for a while when I lived in Massachusetts.
I visited Boston coming from Portland, Oregon. Took The Boston Duck. I found the people who knew we were tourists were actually pretty nice to us. Thanks for great vacation, Boston. It's a great US City.
Nick, thanks for the shout out to my channel in this video. I love Boston and the suburbs, every day I discover many more interesting/beautiful/mesmerizing places in the area. People are really, really nice here, minus the occasional masshole but those are everywhere. Schools and education unparalleled, such a great place for raising a family, I wouldn’t want to do that anywhere else in US, honestly.
As someone who lives and grew up in Boston, let me just say don’t move here unless your rich!! Unless you want to be in your mid to late 20s with roommates because apartments are ridiculously expensive
Hell, I know people in their 40s in Boston who still have flatmates. That's basically your only option if you don't have family money and/or a job that pays close to the seven figure range.
So clean! BTW - Back Bay was built in the later half of the 1800's, so it's not really "new" except maybe in Boston terms. BTW2 - Many Bostonians love the Winter. The more cold and snow, the better! And nothing beats Autumn in New England.
When I was a younger guy, my brothers and friends would head up to Boston a couple weekends a year for bars and fun. That stopped a long time ago when things (hotels) got just way too Expensive. Great fun town though.
My girlfriend actually just bought a house in Mattapan. Her neighbors seem nice, when I move in I know I'll love it. For her, she would actually prefer the Dorchester, Roxbury Mattapan area due to how culturally rich those places are (both of us are Caribbean Americans). For some that might not be important, but for us it is, even if the place isn't perceived as "safe" by some.
I have lived in the Fenway since 1997. What was once a slightly sketchy and relatively affordable neighborhood has been overrun by developers, who have "transformed" the area into a gentrified sinkhole of ugly office and apartment towers filled with wealthy students and even wealthier "internationals" who add nothing beyond their presence. This has driven up rents to absurd levels and forced out locals.
It absolutely is, I'd reccomend staying at Nantasket Beach resort in hull. Its 45 mins from the city by car but you can hop a boat that runs all day and be in the city in 25 min. Nantasket beach is a legitimate beach with waves and clean water. Hope this helps
I grew up in JP in the 80s. It's changed a lot. I remember the Southend in the 80s as well. I used to stay away from that area since it was so dangerous with druggies. As a Hispanic, I never even thought of going to Southie or Charlestown. Guaranteed I'd get picked on or chased out of that area back then. It's changed a lot where I can safely go there now. There's a lot of gentrification all over the place in Boston. It's impossible to buy a house anywhere in Boston or near it since those sales turn into bidding wars. You find a house you like for $650k then it sells for $780k easily. Impossible. Good thing my sights are down south in Florida! On another note, I wasn't aware of that methadone mile. Man. That looks like a scene from a typical zombie movie. Great job as always Nick!
@@ADPeguero if you go to miami for vacation, check out an everglades tour! one of the best things I've ever done. it's about half an hour from south beach but I think its a must!
I’ve lived in Dorchester (Fields Corner), Fenway, Kenmore, Beacon Hill (back side of the hill where some poor people lived. Early 1980s), West Rox (wicked safe but boring) and now the West End. Got a great condo in the sky. Way way cheaper than Beacon Hill, but you have to a parking space if you want to keep a car). Over 40 years here now.
I was just in Boston with my mom walking around and it was almost comical how quickly it went from distinctively Irish to distinctively Italian and back to Irish in the downtown harbor area 😆
I'm from Alabama. Been to Boston twice for extended stays in the past many years. One of the friendliest cities I've ever visited. If you think they're unfriendly, you might be the problem. This is where god would live, if he could afford it.
There are many many hobbies and interest groups. The public transport is mainly toward and away from Boston to get from one suburban town to another you must go into Boston and back out on another line. Sometimes it is faster to walk 5 miles than take the highly indirect public transport. Also going into the city can be a oneway trip as the public transport shuts down early evening to get back to the suburbs, thus leaving you stranded.
One thing to add on, south of city lines are quincy and weymouth. They're both cheep, weymouth is relatively safe, very low crime but big drug market. And the majority of quincy is basically a suburban copy of dorchester. Suprisingly, weymouth is one of the most independent places in Mass. The good places are Marina Bay, Union Point, and sometimess the landing. The bad places are Bicknel square, quincy shore drive, Lake street, and jackson square. They both aren't very gentrified and you'll find crappy looking buildings and houses with extrodinary interiors. Quincy is more of a city vibe and weymouth is more county-ish. I've been in the area my whole life and dispite looking trashy its a great area to live. Its the kind of place where people don't care about politics and live like normal people. The homes are like 400-600k and rent is only like 1600 /m.
Thank you for the video Nick! Took me down memory lane. Although it’s been 30 years since I lived there, seems a lot has changed but remains the same. Just more of it! We (roommates) had this awesome 3 bedroom brown stone apartment in Bay Village. We thought it was expensive then $700 mo. 😀
I grew up in Chelsea, have worked in Lynn, Somerville, Boston, and Stoneham. I went to law school in Boston. I love it here. But this video is correct that people are moving west to we purchased a home in the Groton area for less than a home around the city or the 95 93 corridor in Stoneham/Woburn. Overall living and growing up here has been fantastic. It's easy to get to the beach, museums, zoos, and the aquarium. No matter where you live there are positives and negatives. But yes, the traffic is terrible!
Nick, I knew that Boston would be expensive because of the gentrification, quality of life, low crime, job opportunities, etc. but I didn't expect it to be THAT expensive...like LA Expensive. But, if you want the best, you have to pay a lot for it.
Lol nothing about any liberal crap pile city is "the best". Highest crime, highest taxes, and now due to the lockdowns and restrictions lowest on the freedom scale. You couldn't PAY me to live in Boston or LA. People are fleeing both cities if you look at the outgoing data.

Cost of living aside, Boston is my favorite big city in America. I live there for a year many moons ago. There's just something magical about Boston, maybe it's the history, or the architecture, or the North End, or the Charles River, or the Fens. I could go on: the culture, the music scene, the Commons, Charles Street, the museums, whatever. Looking forward to kicking around there again.. Yea the transit system is awesome as long as you don’t need to use from 12am to 5am. And the bars close at 2am so you’re drunk and stranded in the city because you either need to take a tunnel or bridge to get outa the city.
Thanks for profiling my adopted home town. You definitely hit the nail on the head. Please do pricy Newton & Lexington next. And finally, Worcester, were us poor folks have been forced to settle to save a couple of bucks!
I lived in Boston for several years. You are right. There is a lot to do in the city. Big Irish Catholic population, big tech scene, as well as health care, education, and finance. Generally very clean. The Cape is very accessible (and beautiful). It is a charming city, but the climate and people can be a little too cold for some.
Love reading the comments. Amazing how much my town has changed since I enlisted in Quincy over half a century ago when there was the "Combat Zone", Dorchester and Southie were dangerous enough that black people dare not even drive through and the same was true for whites in Roxbury. Glad all that has (mostly) changed. My Dad and his father were born and bred in Brighton and part of our history involved paying off Irish cops to race in the streets - yep, at one time there were horse races in the streets too - back in great grandfathers time even harness racing along the Charles. At one time I lived on Marlborough Street in the Back Bay and paid $175 a moth for a 1 bedroom with fireplace and its own parking spot but I could walk to to work on Boylston Street. Friday night was fight night in town too, something to not miss so much. But I'll tell you - when in the barracks or deployed and the guys ask each other "where you from" we are always proud to say BOSTON.
Saw a pretty normal house listed in brookline for $6m - i then watched a toyr on youtube of a $12m mansion in Colorado and the difference was jaw dropping. For double the price the mansion was truly huge and was stunning. Unbelievable how little you get in greater boston.
Hi Nick, great video! I live close to Boston, but I was looking forward to listening about Hyde Park and Roslindale which are also neighborhoods in Boston.
What to do in the Boston area if you don’t care about sports, don’t drink that much, and are not a brainiac. It’s the arts and music. Once upon a decade there were 20+ clubs with live original music everywhere with 3 bands a night. Hopefully once Covid dies down the scene will revive. The Plow and Star in Cambridge was a typical club, the Middle East in Cambridge, and the Midway on the other side of Boston. Don’t forget the beach and pack your skis for the winter for the slopes out west and north.
We Massholes may not be friendly but we can be kind, as an old friend from California said to me once “In California, if you need help people will smile at you, but won’t help you but in Massachusetts if you need help we will scowl but we will help!”
You skipped over Seaport!!!! That's my favorite up and coming area. Used to be all parking lots but now it's skyscrapers and really nice condos, bars and shopping

Grew up in a fairly affluent town on the North Shore. Just moved back to the Boston area and temporarily living in DOT (aka Dorchester). NIck - you have to call it that. That's what the local refer to it as. At first. I was afraid to move there however it's totally fine. Even though I am in DOT I am so glad to be back in the area. I traveled to all the major cities (mostly on biz) and I can honestly say it's the best.
I'm from the north shore myself. The coastal north shore. I would argue it is the nicest region in the state. The political landscape is insufferable and the cost of living is insane but I still wouldn't want live anywhere else.
I grew up in Boston pretty much all around and now live a few hours north but still visit frequently and have many friends in the area. This is pretty spot on imo. In the late 90’s-early 00’s places like Dorchester, Roxbury and Mattapan were places to avoid and, from what friends say, it sounds like things are getting better in Dorchester at least. I would love to move back and have continuously looked for options but it’s so very expensive to live there that it’s simply not possible despite working in the tech industry with a decent career. I hope that someday I will be able to move back though, there’s a certain charm that keeps pulling me back.
I just traveled to Boston from Maryland and it was at least better than New York. Obviously everyone there is liberal but its not that congested. It s actually very welcoming and nice. Traffic is kinda garbage and people don't know how to drive but yeah it's great there. I do prefer Cambridge way more though. At night time there are many shady places. Smells like cannabis everywhere but it's pretty nice. You do feel kinda sketch at night tho.

I lived in Boston back in 2005-2006 and I remember people with NY Plates getting their cars destroyed if parked near Fenway park during games.
You seem to hate minorities and gays and Asians… i can’t take your word for anything.
@@BostonAreaHomes u couldn't be more correct

Boston sucks😂😂
I’m from outside of Sacramento and lived in Dorchester for a year. The whole area was just completely different than from what I was used to. I felt like I was in a movie when I’d go into back bay or the north end. It’s definitely my favorite big American city. I saw a plethora of homeless on methadone mile. If the winters didn’t suck and not so expensive I’d live there permanently. Now I just own a home with my wife in the Sacramento suburbs instead lol.
The only thing it really has going for it is the food.
Sacramento, CA? It's cheaper than a suburb near Boston?
Same here from Sacramento and lived in Boston during my College Years. Really loved Boston but hard to get used to the Winters especially as you get older. I also live in the Suburbs of Sacramento now, can't beat the weather.
@@meistsyans6526 Yes, Sacramento is quite affordable compared to the rest of the San Francisco Bay Area or Southern California, although Home prices have gone up a lot after the pandemic from all of the remote workers moving here from the SF Bay Area. Boston bs Sacramento? No contest. Warm weather beats cold any day. And both are liberal so either way we’re screwed!

I was raised in the Irish culture in Boston and its suburbs. I will sum Boston up in one word. Expensive. That's why I left as soon as I finished High School and I had to support myself.
Where in the country isn’t it expensive?
@@rangeroverization The cost of housing here in Augusta GA is less than half that of Boston.
Cool did you like it there?
I visited Boston coming from Portland, Oregon. Took The Boston Duck. I found the people who knew we were tourists were actually pretty nice to us. Thanks for great vacation, Boston. It's a great US City.
Nick, thanks for the shout out to my channel in this video. I love Boston and the suburbs, every day I discover many more interesting/beautiful/mesmerizing places in the area. BTW - Back Bay was built in the later half of the 1800's, so it's not really "new" except maybe in Boston terms.

For some that might not be important, but for us it is, even if the place isn't perceived as "safe" by some.
right on, bro, much respect for sticking to your own kind
It depends on what you look like. White folk wont last 15 minutes on Blue Hill Ave
We live one hour north of Boston, love it. We’ll educated people, nice downtown, very family friendly.
That puts you in New Hampshire…..go to the New Hampshire vids.

It absolutely is, I'd reccomend staying at Nantasket Beach resort in hull. Its 45 mins from the city by car but you can hop a boat that runs all day and be in the city in 25 min. Nantasket beach is a legitimate beach with waves and clean water. Hope this helps

Nick, from all of the videos I’ve seen of your’s of major us cities I have to say that Boston looks like by far the nicest!

Over 40 years here now.
I've lived in Boston my whole life......and have no idea where the West End is! :)
Tom Brady & Gisele Bundchen used to live in Brookline, just to give you an idea how posh it is.
All of Boston is gentrifying. Just leave it like that. A city not for the broke.
I live in Somerville and it’s the same as Santa Clarita California, price wise.
@@Technoirz Same, I live a few minutes away from Assembly
It's gentrifying in a lot of cities now.
Not a lie in sight. This man's Boston review is on point
Agreed. And I would argue that next door Braintree is just a wealthier and better version of Quincy and Weymouth
I just love how nick can just say “You CAN’T afford it” like i know man don’t yell it in my face 😂😂😂

If you love high cost of living, traffic, people that act like aholes and more traffic...Boston is for you!
First two can be easily eliminated by not driving (saves you a ton of money too). Assholes are everywhere.
Just because you met someone that was an asshole in Boston doesn't mean everyone in Boston is an asshole. Just think...
Nick, I knew that Boston would be expensive because of the gentrification, quality of life, low crime, job opportunities, etc. but I didn't expect it to be THAT expensive...like LA Expensive. But, if you want the best, you have to pay a lot for it.
You pay a lot to live in LA but you certainly are not getting the "best"! LA is terrible.

I lived in Boston for 20 years. This is mostly accurate. You forgot to mention the great music scene there though.
I used to live in Boston. I miss Boston.

@@nycblixky8530 yeah because it depends on what you like. I like a more relaxed environment which I just don’t feel in New York
I would be highly skeptical of your source for the mass transit ranking of "best in the country" our MBTA routinely catches fire and derails. We rank 48/50 for transportation infrastructure.
I think one of the worse been living in Cali for 8months now wayyyyy better then Boston honestly . I do miss Boston not gonna lie won’t miss the cold weather for sure etc - best of luck friend .
I LITERALLY NADE A SIMILE COMMENT!!! His source definitely has only taken the t 2 times in his time in boston
The Red Line is the fucking WORST!!!
@@joeyraymond6797 I second this, the red line is super unreliable
Try dealing with the traffic a 15 minute drive can turn into an hour or more.
Thanks for sharing interesting, valuable content Nick & Sage 💚👍🇺🇲
I live in BOSTON DORCHESTER Massachusetts. And I LOVE it❤💃🏽
I just got a 100% remote job. I've been rewatching all your videos to see where I want to live lol
And where did you decide?
I was already thinking of visiting someday but watching this REALLYYY made me want to visit Beantown 😍😍
Fun fact: Most of us native Bostonians don't call it beantown. We just call it the Bean.
What the hell is beantown? No one calls it that
@@j-xl6258 Yes I’ve heard it called that. I’m not a native clearly.
@@lunisce Beantown is a nickname for Boston. Google is your friend babe 😘
Winter is only 3-4 months? Double it. Other than that, you nailed it.
It’s really only bad from November-December until March.
@@basedandredpilled88 maybe I could have dialed in my definitions of "winter" beyond the existence of snow or ice. Winter for me is the time I feel temperature forces me to turn on my heat. For me that's mid Oct through mid-May - this year through mid-June depending on the temperature.
@@debmurray2734 oh okay If that’s how it is for you makes sense, personally I only turn on the heat when it’s around 32 degrees or below.
Winter is not 3 months! 😂 haha. A weekend Northeastern is 3 months 😂 haha. Deb speaks the truth! Double you estimation.
@@MichaelSuperbacker I live there it really only snows heavy from December to February .
Nick, JP is not cheap.
Having grown up in Mass., you did a good job of summing it up.
