Blayne apparently didn’t listen to much CoB back in the day. Under Grass and Clovers riff is very reminiscent of classic green/blue/red albums. Happy neo-classical, almost pirate metal progression sounding goodness. You’re way off base dude.
No it is not. For example the song Hate Me has that quite happy sounding melody, but it's used very sparingly throughout the song and the track as a whole is structured excellently. Alexi also sounds angry as fuck with his vocals on Hate Me. You can't say the same about Under Grass and Clover. The best part of that song is the mediocre middle section.

Blayne, why do you automatically correlate being "catchy" with being "poppy"? The Under Grass and Clover riff is catchy as hell, but how is different than any other classic Sabbath riff or heavy death metal band riff? Just because it's in a higher tuning and lighter tone? Not every metal riff needs to soul-crunching. And if being "catchy" is inherently "poppy", then Eaten by Bloodbath is the poppiest metal song of all time. Ok there are some simple songs on this album that aren’t traditionally “heavy” but that doesn’t make them bad to me. Even in those songs Alexi incorporates a great amount of nuance, they are there if you want to catch them. Songs like Grass and Clover definitely threw me off on first listen because it’s incredibly upbeat but in no way would I say it’s pop. You know I actually find some of these upbeat songs refreshing and sharp, a different side of metal that isn’t all in minor key. There’s definitely a lot of technical fortitude on this album that’s pleasing. Personally I’d give this like a 4-4.5. I feel like giving this album below a 3 is just being picky.
I really like this album! Blues and classical is in there. The groove is really really good in the songs! The tried some new stuff and tried to keep the COB feeling, and it worked for me! Not being a very big COB fan, I agree with Blayne. This review went about as i expected.. but Sacred Monster's release was a super fun listen and I would highly recommend it.
Yeah I don't get the Under Grass and Clover criticism. It's just a tightly written song with a MASSIVE hook at it's core. I love it. Altogether this album is the best thing they've put out since Hate Crew Deathroll.
I like Under Glass and Clover. Bodom has always had catchy riffs/melodies. I haven't listened to the whole record yet, so I am going to reserve my final judgement until I get the chance and listen to it
Metal reviwers always over analyze... Alexi's quote is spot on. The song soon departed seems simple but after a few listens you start to appreciate things you missed before. Also, no mention of the title track?
so far plattitudes and barren words is my favorite song. based on all the videos they have released in the past week. I havent heard the entire cd. I have it on preorder by it wont be delivered till monday. been waiting a long time to get my hands on it.
The funny moment when the shoutouts are far more interesting than the actual band they're reviewing...just saying. P.S. - Blayne is killing it with recommendations lately.
CoB is (was) my favorite band, and i totally agreed with your opinion. And i will note it 2.5/5 too. "Wings Of Fire" by Brymir (it's a mix between Follow the Reaper and Wintersun) which it was out the same day is way better and I will give it a 5/5
Loong time CoB fan here. The first time I listened to this album I was in a bad mood and wasn't really listening carefully, and was absolutely disappointed. However I took a break and a few days after I had a 2 hour flight, so I just put on good headphones, put it on repeat, closed my eyes and carefully and thoughtfully listened the whole album two times. Song by song, riff by riff. And now I think, it's the best thing that happened to CoB after HCDR.
Dude. Love your presentation style more than everyone I've seen, even the Melon Man. You should start your own channel if you haven't already. Would be an insta-sub.
I used to like cob but after hate crew it all started to fall apart. Are you dead yet was half a good album and then I really struggled with them. A real. Shame as they were a great live band with a hell of a catalog up to then but I just couldn't get into them after that, sounds like this will be no different to me. Maybe pick up cheap later on.....
Same! I played Follow the Reaper and Hate Crew Deathroll literally to death, but when Are You Dead Yet came out it just ... I don't know, became bland, cheesy and just not relevant any more. Musical tastes change I know but, they really sound like a naff parody band now.
I will check the album out even I dont expect to be as magical and over the top like the first 3 (4) albums, which can never be topped in solos and riffing!
Charles Anthony I disagree. I think blooddrunk was pretty fucking great. The dark atmosphere, his vocals were great in that album. Relentless was okay, guitar tone was eh. Whole album seemed quiet. I worship Chaos was the weakest in my opinion. But they shot back with this album 🤘🏼

TLDR go listen for yourself its free to listen to on youtube before you buy it anyway XD
Under Grass and Clover is a really good song in my opinion. It's as good as lots of other melodeath, which is a really diverse subgenre. Some stuff just sounds upbeat, poppy and straightforward. Just good melodies and a tone that's meant to make you feel good. That's what Under Grass and Clover is.
This is their best album since Hatecrew.... absolutely amazing! Love the whole sound and vibe on this album. Totally wicked and sinister like the early days. My favorit song is "This Road" :)
You recommend Traveler. Traveler is CATCHY AF It also has mainstream metal written all over it as it sounds like re-worked Maiden riffs left and right. So, you do have taste outside of ultra weird heavy stuff
Something I really do appreciate about Banger is that I've never heard you all stomp on other's opinions. It's always presented as the reviewer's opinion and not solid fact, and in a way that doesn't sound as if you all are saying "It's my way or the highway". I really do respect that mentality.
Big Children of Bodom fan here, I had the pleasure of meeting Alexi several years ago. I agree with your opinions except i found 3/4 of the tracks good and others lacking the power Bodom have previously had
I’m on board with this review for the most part. It did go up and down a lot. This album was probably their best since Blooddrunk in my opinion. Alexi was actually having some fun with the guitar here for once in like forever. You can feel that. The keys were tasty. Not overdone. I enjoyed it more than Blaine I think but I think the review is pretty much on par with what you get from this album. Some really cool and reminiscent old school meeting some really bland and uninspired new school COB. It’s a solid effort, especially now that I’ve completely given up all hope of another Hatecrew lol
I keep dreaming of a beautiful metal scene where you guys review another Nevermore album! Maybe somewhere down the road! Let’s keep our fingers crossed!🤞 And down with the Arch Enemy! And down with the power of the money!
This Guy is clearly not an old skool COB fan. I thought "Under Grass and Clover" was a pretty good song! I love that opening Riff, it's very classic Bodom \m/
I thought this was a real return to form myself. It's nowhere near the level of any of the first four albums, but I really enjoyed it. Of course, as the band that got me into metal, I probably give CoB more chances than I should.
To be honest, I was incredibly terrified about the album, since the main thing which I'd used to evaluate whether or not the album was exactly "Under Glass And Clover", the fucking lead single! Thankfully, it doesn't represent the entire album. Good to know it deserves at least a 2.5/5.
I'd say this album is 4,5/5. I don't like all songs, but the majority is above average or good. And WTH!! Under Grass and Clover is the best track in the album. Yeah, it's "catchy", but who gives a fuck! It's good stuff, man. I doesn't sound like pop at all. And the people that disliked this album can't actually do better than them.
I don't want to hate on BangerTV, but something I've noticed is that most of the faces of this channel are quite narrow minded as regards metal genres...I mean, you can see they all love Death Metal...and Thrash Metal...and Black Metal...and more Death...and more Black...and more Thrash...besides Popoff who really knows his shit about all classic metal and Brad who is in charge of the Core side of metal, I feel like there is no representation for Power Metal, Symphonic Metal, Folk, or anything that comes from Europe that is not Thrash, Death, Black o CLassic metal...I mean, kind someone who knows, cares for and likes the bands and make them review those bands and leave Thrash, Death, Black, etc to the guys who really love it and really want to talk about them...It's not a good thing when a person has to review something they don't like, and it shows...just my opinion...
@@devilman444a yeah, I forgot about her, and the other guy who covers Prog, but idk, I still feel they get too little to do, I feel that this channel neglects and looks down on Power Metal, Symphonic Metal and the likes...only by watching the videos on the essencials of those genres you can tell...

The album reminded me of Blooddrunk. The first few listens really didn't rub me the right way at all. The more I give the album a full play the more I find it growing on me. Overall it's catchy, but I feel like it's pretty solid as a full album. Not so much single by single track.

Fully agree.. I've discovered some truly awesome shit thanks to Blayne's shoutouts. But I'm not a big COB fan so this week's shoutouts prob aren't for me..
Sacred Monster are amazing! give them a try
Guys, haven't y'all figured out Banger has turned in to a death/black/doom metal channel. Anything else they slam.
Tyr relased a new album today as well, March 8th 2019. They also toured with Children of Bodom 4-ish years ago.
It's a solid release. 4 out of 5
Not being a very big COB fan, I agree with Blayne.
Totally disagree with this review (which is a really bad review by itself). Great CoB album, love it.
Giordan Quesada hahahaha
I like Under Glass and Clover. Bodom has always had catchy riffs/melodies. I haven't listened to the whole record yet, so I am going to reserve my final judgement until I get the chance and listen to it
Another record that came out at the beginning of the month was 'Hel' from Tyr. Surprised that one didn't get a shout-out cause it's a solid album.
Under grass and clover was pretty good imo
The funny moment when the shoutouts are far more interesting than the actual band they're reviewing...just saying.
P.S. - Blayne is killing it with recommendations lately.
*muah*
10/10
One of the few I'll listen to completion
When there are keyboard solos in combination with the tone/sound of the keyboard and guitar effects it has a dream Theater sound to me! Love it
5/5 fantastic album
CoB is (was) my favorite band, and i totally agreed with your opinion. And i will note it 2.5/5 too.
"Wings Of Fire" by Brymir (it's a mix between Follow the Reaper and Wintersun) which it was out the same day is way better and I will give it a 5/5
Btw sorry if my english is bad
Best COB album in years.
Dude, I'm the same as you guys. Listen to Glasshouses and Kick in the Spleen on UA-cam. Guy is a prick. This album is great!
I will check the album out even I dont expect to be as magical and over the top like the first 3 (4) albums, which can never be topped in solos and riffing!
Nah.......great album, Sheeit review. Grass and clover is excellente.
Totally disagree. I Worship Chaos wasn't the best record, I agree, but I think Hexed kicks ass
John McLellan hell no. It was good. But not the best. I would say follow the reaper was an amazing album. Along with halo of blood
Subject Guitar : First four albums, amazing! Are you dead yet? Very great. Everything since then, until Hexed? Garbage.
In my opinion
Charles Anthony I disagree. I think blooddrunk was pretty fucking great. The dark atmosphere, his vocals were great in that album. Relentless was okay, guitar tone was eh. Whole album seemed quiet. I worship Chaos was the weakest in my opinion. But they shot back with this album 🤘🏼
Charles Anthony but I do agree. First albums were kick ass. We just have to accept Alexi won’t be playing what he used to due to age
@@BlackWolfMedia_ : I just hated Blooddrunk, killed my love for Bodom. Also, I don't think it's his age, guy is only in his 40's, but it is his health. Guy looks like death....
Sunkist orange for life, bro. Orange soda without caffeine is not orange soda at all.
Im a COB fan but not an extremely loyal one. They have made records that I hated and bored me to death. But starting with Halo of Blood I've enjoyed everything including Hexed. 1 out of 5 skulls to this review. This album is ATLEAST a 3.5/5 to me.
No hard feelings though. We all have our personal tastes.
Keep it Metal \m/
You gotta check out the new Equipoise album! It was the best selling metal album on Bandcamp this week.
I have listen to the full album and loved it;) COB fan many years:)
Man i hate this guy for saying this is a bad album. This album was a blessing for the old fans
Haven't listened to Hexed yet, but I enjoyed your review. Love the humor and respect your opinions. Still, I hope you're wrong because I was looking forward to this album.
Truly awesome album dawg but only I missed the old school Laiho shreddings....
5/5 easily
I only watch reviews out of intrigue and will always listen to the album myself. i respect others opinions but if i only had this review to go off however i would have missed out on 5/5 album, the album grows on me every time i listen it and it has got a very fresh feel and vibe too it.
TLDR go listen for yourself its free to listen to on youtube before you buy it anyway XD
blayne is the pewdiepie of metal reviews
Under Grass and Clover is a really good song in my opinion. It's as good as lots of other melodeath, which is a really diverse subgenre. Some stuff just sounds upbeat, poppy and straightforward. Just good melodies and a tone that's meant to make you feel good. That's what Under Grass and Clover is.
Quite harsh review. Sure, there are some weak songs there but for me it's at least a 3,5/5 album.
Go listen to any album by Mors Principium Est, same genre and same country. Then let us know if u like CoB's new album
Well I guess I'm having an unpopular opinion, but I really like it
I feel like a lot of people are actually liking the album so you aint in minority :)
Under Grass and Clover is a banger!
It’s nice to hear a heavy track written in a major key for once.
I'm Peruvian, stay away from my chocolate, MY CHOCOLATE.
C H O C O L A T E ! ! !
Damn you Blaine! Now i know that New Found Glory exist. And yeah Hit or Miss and Under glass and Clover are twins of each other
This is their best album since Hatecrew.... absolutely amazing! Love the whole sound and vibe on this album. Totally wicked and sinister like the early days. My favorit song is "This Road" :)
Huh, less music track samples but the shout-outs mentions albums to be released which is really nice.
You recommend Traveler.
Traveler is CATCHY AF
It also has mainstream metal written all over it as it sounds like re-worked Maiden riffs left and right.
So, you do have taste outside of ultra weird heavy stuff
He is obviously not a fan from the start.... critiques everything this band is known for
Something I really do appreciate about Banger is that I've never heard you all stomp on other's opinions. It's always presented as the reviewer's opinion and not solid fact, and in a way that doesn't sound as if you all are saying "It's my way or the highway". I really do respect that mentality.
I also really enjoyed the varied shout outs in this review. A little something for each different taste.
It´s a damn good record from damn good band, perioid.
This is the worst review I've seen. Easy 5/5 for me. Where this pop sugar crap you're talking about, cause I don't hear it.
Big Children of Bodom fan here, I had the pleasure of meeting Alexi several years ago. I agree with your opinions except i found 3/4 of the tracks good and others lacking the power Bodom have previously had
I think Hecate's Nightmare was really good, I love that chorus.
Let’s keep our fingers crossed!🤞
And down with the Arch Enemy!
And down with the power of the money!
Not a Bodom fan but I’m enjoying the new direction
Sacred Monster is just what I needed, fucking rips. Thank you, good sir.
Sarah covers the genres tho :)
@@Mantis.Sartinoli yeah you are not wrong about that. compares to death metal or whatever, those genres you listed gets a lot less attention for sure. for instance, whether you like them or not, Epica is huge in symphonic metal right. but their album would never get reviewed on here
@@devilman444a Exactly... Epica, Nightwish, Kamelot, and other juggernauts like Blind Guardian, Gamma Ray, Avantasia, Ayreon, Helloween, Symphony X, etc...I mean I know the golden age of those bands have passed, but they are still relevant right?
Shoutout to Equipoise and their new record
EXCUSE YOU! under grass and clover is the best track on the album!
I'll never forget 97 in the shadows plus red light in my eyes
i honestly thought i worship chaos was a masterpiece
Same here I personally thought it was a return to form for them
Tyreek Murillo couldn't agree more. I think it was a directional shift & a good one at that. 🤘🏼
Hey finally someone man...🙌
I'd like it more if the vocals were better on that album, sounds like he was struggling to pronounce stuff. I think he had to change his technique so its fair enough
Its a solid record but its kinda lopsided all the best songs are on the first half. Hexed is more consistant and has alot more of the classic CoB flare
Platitudes and Barren Words is a fucking cool song. I've listen to all COB albums, they're my favorite band. I agree with most of the comments below: this is a good album.
The album reminded me of Blooddrunk. The first few listens really didn't rub me the right way at all. The more I give the album a full play the more I find it growing on me. Overall it's catchy, but I feel like it's pretty solid as a full album. Not so much single by single track.
