These were very memorable runs, seeing 614 in every-day dress, including the black wall tires (as someone mentioned below). The ditch lights should've been ditched for the run-bys, but I suppose that small minded "I am the law" bureaucrats ruled over aesthetics and common sense. The Comet cars are appropriate, part of EL Legacy but switching out those Pensy lead cars for some long distance Stillwells would have been a great touch if any were still available and roadworthy. The only sensation not captured by these excellent shots was the physical pounding of the rails that one could feel as the 614 passed a few feet away: an experience of a lifetime. Thank you Thomas Eckardt for posting this cool footage!

I kinda like the 614 when she was in this phase. No whitewall tires, ditch lights, original tender lettering, a toned down whistle, seems fitting to me. Sorta gives me that 611 feeling, just without as much streamlining.

not many steam locomotives I've seen with ditchlights, but as a must have for NJT, 614 looks pretty good with them

As I recall, it was an internal decision to use them for safety, not a government mandate.

K&L Trainz came out with the 614 Greenbriar Limited with ditch lights but to my disappointment they do not Flash. By the way, is that a Hancock chime whistle on 614?

Actually, some railfans consider ditch lights on a steam locomotive to be a travesty.

What happened to the old whistle on these trips?

I know on at least one of these trips they used a Norfolk & Western whistle because O. Winston Link was aboard that day. It could have been here, this sounds like an N & W J whistle to me

Myles Spear no i don't think so, I thought it was more of a union pacific challenger or big boy whistle....actually more of a up fef 3 4-8-4 whistle but I'm still studying up on locomotives ^^
