I love the moment both kratos and atreus say “physical or magical” as mimir says “invulnerable to all threats”.. they’re like we’ve heard of this too much XD
Wait a minute. Mimir knows this story. He was an attendant to a king of mischievous faeries as a boy. He is familiar with Greek culture and history. He’s a storyteller, and he doesn’t seem to die of old age. Is Mimir Shakespeare?
Fun fact there are references to multiple Shakespeare plays in this game. If Mimir is indeed Puck, Puck is also responsible for all of the mischief that takes place in A Midsummer Night's Dream, which for those who know, the story is loosely based on a Greek myth. I just find the idea funny of Mimir causing all sorts of havoc and mischief in Greece.
Is Mimir talking about the story of Macbeth? That’s amazing and a different reason why you don’t say Macbeth as well. Also: *AHH* Hot potato, off his drawers, Pluck will make amends
Yeah, pretty sure it's Macbeth. "I bear a charmed life, which must not yield to one of woman born." "...Tell thee, Macduff was from his mother’s womb untimely ripp’d.""
It’s definitely Macbeth The witches are from that story, the invulnerability is a reference to “no man of woman borne can kill you” (something that bites him when he fights a man who’s mother had a C Section) and the nameless quality is a reference to the play being cursed (traditionally only dubbed the “Scottish Play”
That unison answer was fckin' adorable for the trio. Reminds me so much of the Van der Linde gang members' energy every time Uncle tells one of his tales lol
In the previous game, Mimir made oblique reference to having been Puck when he was younger, calling his old gang 'goodfellows' and 'merry wanderers of the night', and talking about being in the service of a fairy king. Here, he's referencing the events of MacB---~~~*&%$--- THE SCOTTISH PLAY. I don't know where the writers got the idea for Shakespeare references of all things, but I'm enjoying it.
Shakespeare made heavy usage of Greco-Roman mythology and since the British Isles have a long history with the Vikings, it fits Thematically, prophecy is also a big theme in many Shakespeare plays (Julius Caesar, Macbeth, Richard III)
They took from my favorite part of RDR2, how they fill the boring or slow parts of the game with the most interesting bit of dialogue so even something tedious like rowing a canoe around for 30 minutes keeps you interested. Great storytelling will ALWAYS shine in any form of media.
Mimir is Puck and he later tells Kratos after getting the spear that he was friends with Nimue, the Lady of the Lake who bestows King Arthur his famous Sword Excalibur.
As for atreus's question, cause I don't really feel like mimir answered how the deceptiveness of prophecy applied to ragnarok and Groa not telling Odin the whole story If Odin were to have first heard the full prophecy, and how *only* asgard is destroyed, you know what his first thought would be? That all the other realms band together cause they all wanna piece of him and his kingdom, of the realm of asgard and its asgardians So once and if Odin were to come to this typical paranoid egotistical conclusion, he'd rather wipe out all the other realms entirely try to fend them off come ragnarok By including everyone in the destruction, he assumes its not just targeting him, and so doesn't kill off entire realms and instead tries to use them to avert or fight off ragnarok
I have a theory that the next game might take place in Celtic Mythology for two reasons. For one, Mimir is from Avalon (Britain I think) and he is still with us at the end of the game and he could make the perfect exposition if Kratos goes there as it is his homeland. Secondly there are myths concerning giants where I come from like Gogmagog so perhaps Avalon could have been a place that some Giants went to and we know that TYR visited the land at some point.
@@danspawn85 It's interesting to see mythology and Shakespeare woven together this way. I wonder if Santa Monica would combine Celtic Mythology with Myological Figures from England like King Arthur and Ronin Hood. Morgana would make an excellent antagonist.
@@WhoisPersona depends on which version. In the earliest interpretations of Arthur, not only is Morgana an ally, but not even related to Arthur. Personally, if we delved into Arthurian, I'd go for Vortigern as the villain, with a plot twist villain being Merlin.
@@colvamoon6962 Perhaps Merlin could also be revealed to be the Dagda. From I've looked up He's the head of the Celtic pantheon and is described as a bearded man but there is an illustration that portrays him as a hooded figure with horns. Perhaps the character could have two sides with Merlin coming off as a kind old man. But then the Dagda is this tall robed creature that has a face like the Horned King from the Black Cauldron.
It makes me feel like the brainwashing spell might have lingered still over the years between the games, and every now and then Mimir would just randomly say "Baldur is blessed with invulnerability to all attacks both physical and magical." while everyone's trying to sleep.
All this talk of the Thane of Glamis and the Lady of the Lake, can't help but wonder if Kratos will be paying my cheery little island in the next game. The Seelie Court could do with some straightening out, and a certain Welsh lad might need a hand throwing out those damn Saxons.
my theatre training finally is coming into use. he's chatting about Macbeth, and let me tell ya, Macbeth's wife was also no beauty in this situation. However, as time went on, Macbeth did go crazy from being king. It's now considered a curse to say the name Macbeth in a theatre and said to bring bad luck on a show if you did. So back then we called him "M"
From the story Mimir is telling here, and considering SM confirmed he is from the Celtic lands now under a new name, I'd say this is Macbeth. Strange that they even confirmed a fictional story as part of the mythological aspects in the God of War world. Now I have to wonder if the Cthulu mythos by H.P. Lovecraft and Discworld by Terry Pratchett are part of this world.
Probably won't, since those worlds are recent works and aren't as influential, Shakespeare's works, although not tied into a particular mythology, are quite old and highly influential and well known
I love the moment both kratos and atreus say “physical or magical” as mimir says “invulnerable to all threats”.. they’re like we’ve heard of this too much XD

Kratos and Atreus saying "physical or magical" is a nod to the previous game where Mimir was forced to repeat that when asked about Baldur's weakness.

Puck.

We do get confirmation in this game that Mimir is or was Puck. The fates call him that at least.
There was some kind of PlayStation promo for this game where Mimir straight up tells us he was Puck.

Mimir the Orator
Oh my God, Mimir is talking about MacBeth!
This is why Blue from OSP said "Whom hereafter shall be referred to as MacBoi because that play is haunted and I'm not looking for trouble".
I think this is describing MacBeth.
This is Macbeth alright. Or rather the Shakespeare version of it which is far from accurate.
Given that Mimir was also Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream, I really want to hear his voice actor do Puck's closing soliloquy from the play now.
I love that there's basically an entire game's worth of content combining King Arthur and Shakespeare mythology that we will never get to see.
